Protection from Black Magic and Spirits

Brief and simple practices for Buddhists to engage in to dispel black magic, spirits and unnatural disturbances.
Homage to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and all my great Gurus who have kindly guided me for years.
I’ve been visiting this wonderful country of Malaysia for over eight years now (this was taught in 2000). I’ve had the great pleasure of meeting many wonderful Malaysians of all walks of life. I’ve given countless Dharma talks to many people I’ve encountered who are very sincerely interested in the Buddhadharma in this country. I’ve come across people who are stuck with many superficial ideas and stuck on the outer methods of Buddhism. The inner Buddhistic transformations of becoming a better person is lost on the outer method of what we can and cannot do.
As Buddhists we have the responsibility to learn Buddhism and apply meditation to what we have learned to recondition the mind. When the mind is reconditioned positively then the outer actions will automatically follow. The outer is a reflection of the inner. In conjunction with learning and meditation, one must also engage in the practice of collecting merits and purification of negative karma.
Some people may think that doing actions to collect merit for oneself is selfish. That is wrong view because it is true that one is collecting merits, but it is with a Mahayana or Bodhicitta attitude. If one collects merits with a Bodhicitta motivation then the collection of merits propels us toward Buddhahood and our achieving that Buddhahood allows us to bring sentient being skillfully to Enlightenment. Only a fully Enlightened being has the perfect skill, method and wisdom to benefit others completely.
So we are collecting the merits not for ourselves but for others. When someone makes the statement that collecting merits is a selfish act, it shows that the person does not have correct understanding. Merit is the key factor for bringing us to full Enlightenment. Those who realize that will enthusiastically engage in the collection of merits for the sake of others. In fact, the more suffering one sees that others have to endure, the more one wishes to gain merits in order to find a way to release others.
So learning the Dharma, then meditating on it to gain understanding to transform ourselves and the collection of merits go hand in hand. Receiving many initiations from highly realized Rinpoches will not fulfill its purpose. Attending many Dharma talks and having intellectual understanding of Dharma is like a sick person not taking his medication but just praising the effectiveness of the medication to others while the disease ravages his body.
Taking refuge and initiations but not familiarizing and holding on to the precepts is likened to receiving a warm coat and not wearing it while standing in the cold shivering. Taking refuge in a Guru but always seeing his “bad” points will always result in one meeting with negative people and feeling their negative advice is correct therefore following it diligently! Which will result in making oneself farther and farther from the Dharma. Being far from the Dharma is not a physical distance. One can be in the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, but if one’s thoughts are of hatred, revenge and grudges, then one is very far from the Dharma.
Despising the Guru has many negative repercussions. Having a large centre with many followers and a full donation box is not the measure of success. It is not a sign that the Dharma is flourishing in your centre. The Dharma centre must be overflowing with students whose minds are transforming and becoming better people everyday. In fact, if the actions of students in the centres are not Dharmic but the centre is still flourishing, it is a very bad omen. So we need to check-in with ourselves and say “What is my motivation?” When we check our motivation and it is not good, apply the antidote our teachers have taught us. Please do not look for outer Dharma but inner. Dharma is the inner realization we have gained through diligent application.
One of the questions that I am frequently asked and problems that I frequently come across in this region of the world is how to remove black magic, the prevention of it and spirits? Magic has pervaded the world long before the major religions of Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, etc. made their entrance into the world. It is something conceived and practiced for thousands and thousands of years even before written language. It is usually used to quickly fulfill someone’s wish that cannot be fulfilled by normal means.
Magic comes in many different forms. It may be elements such as wind, air earth, fire or a combination. It may be using spirits of the deceased to do our bidding. It can be words and sounds formulated into certain vibrations to effect a physical change in others. It can be using the earth’s meridians, the astrological constellations and natural energies. It can also be using natural guardians, spirits and beings that inhabit the mountains, forests or even a large tree in a certain area.
Whether it’s black or white magic depends on our motivation for doing it. But if we intend to use a spirit to harm another and the spirit does so, then we can definitely conclude the spirit is negative. If it has the potential to harm others, it definitely has the potential to harm us and probably will. So it is best not to do those types of practices.
Lord Buddha never taught any magic or methods to harm others. So, if you come across a so called a monk or a Buddhist casting magic on others, chances are it is not a real monk or Buddhist. Buddhist scriptures have no methods to harm others. Everything Lord Buddha taught was strictly to benefit. If we practice magic to fulfill our temporal wishes, it will definitely have backlashes and repercussions. So we may fulfill our immediate problems but it will only invite more problems later.
Some signs that someone has been charmed are:
- Disorientation
- Sudden change in personality
- Unnatural behaviour
- Unexplained accidents
- Not acting to the benefit of loved ones but following an outsider for no reason
- Having a intense attraction toward someone they just met but not knowing why (love charm)
These are some of the signs. Other signs include spirits following us and materializing, a feeling like someone is watching us, or a certain area in the house feels uncomfortable. This can be the result if someone sent something to us, we have offended a spirit in a certain location, a local regional deity of a locale is displeased with us, or we have practiced a spirit and it is now exacting its pay.
In Buddhism, we have countless methods to counter this. Each school of Buddhism has valid methods to counter this. But I will mention a few here that will be easy, simple for the layman and very effective for people without a guide to use that is safe.
If one has offended a local deity, one may buy offerings of flowers, joss sticks, fruits, candles and small cakes and go to the location. At the location make offerings and apologize for whatever offense one has done. Perhaps uprooting a tree that was the abode of that spirit or digging in the land of that deity without proper offerings beforehand. Most Chinese will have a small offering altar on their balconies, porch or yard outside. One can make offerings there also. We do not take refuge in these deities or pray to them. It is simply giving them something as if we are giving gifts toward a friend we have offended. The attitude must be like so otherwise it contradicts our refuge precepts.
Then in cases of actual spirits disturbing us or black magic sent to us there are four helpful methods among the many that any layperson may do without monks.
For light cases, one may take refuge in the Three Jewels. One must not only take refuge from the mouth but one must take from the heart. Taking from the heart meaning to let go of all fears and trust the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. One’s refuge precepts must be strong and unbroken. If one has broken one’s precepts of refuge, then we can confess and regret sincerely. Holding the precepts is very powerful protection against negative spirits.
By taking refuge (having complete faith) in the Three Jewels and holding one’s precepts, we can chant the refuge mantra in Sanskrit:
NAMO GURU BEH
NAMO BUDDHA YA
NAMO DHARMA YA
NAMO SANGHA YA
One should chant this mantra at least one rosary a day, accumulating 100,000 slowly. But most importantly one must have pure relationship (samaya) with our refuge Guru or it will not be very effective. The bad relationship we have with our teachers will create such a powerful negative karma that it destroys the very basis of refuge so how can reciting refuge mantra be beneficial? All Dharma practices and accomplishments will degenerate due to broken samaya with our Guru and future Dharma practices will bear no fruit till we apologize sincerely to our Guru.
For stronger cases, one may recite the refuge mantra combined with the recitation of the holy Heart Sutra. The Heart Sutra is the teaching on reality taught by Avalokitesvara as requested by the Superior Arhat Shariputra. When Avalokitesvara finished the discourse, it was praised by Buddha Shakyamuni Himself as valid on Vulture’s Peak. Since it is a Dharma teaching on the wrong perception of existence which causes samsara, it will be very powerful protection against negative samsaric beings.
So one can recite one rosary of the refuge mantra, followed by the recitation of the Holy Heart Sutra, then one rosary of the Heart Sutra mantra:
TAYATHA OM GATEY GATEY PARAGATEY PARASAMGATEY BODHI SOHA
One should also make seven bowls of water offerings to one’s Yidam or Lord Buddha everyday to generate merits. If you can make more than seven, it is even better. The Heart Sutra can be recited in any language.
For very strong cases of black magic or spirit disturbances then one can engage in the practice of Singdongma. Firstly we take refuge by reciting the refuge mantra 21 times. Afterwards we either do the mantra of Je Tsongkhapa or Guru Rinpoche 21 times, strongly believing the Tsongkhapa/Guru Rinpoche is one with our Gurus. Since Tsongkhapa and Guru Rinpoche have manifested in a Guru’s form, it will be easier to identify them with our personal gurus. If we do not have a guru we can still recite their mantras having firm faith in them as living Buddhas.
Tsongkhapa’s mantra is:
OM AH GURU BENZA DHARA SUMATI KIRTI SIDDHI HUNG HUNG
Guru Rinpoche’s mantra is:
OM AH HUNG BENZA GURU PEMA SIDDHI HUNG
Then we proceed to do a short prayer to the fierce Goddess Singdongma who is a fierce manifestation of Green Tara arisen to dispel magic, spirits and obstacles. The prayer and mantra are as follows:
Glorious adamantine Goddess,
Wrathful female with lion’s face,
Whose fire of Gnosis emanates light-rays,
Lion-faced Goddess – to You I bow.Mantra:
AH KHA SAMA-RANZA SHANDA-RASA MARAYA PHET
(Recite 21x,108x or more per day)Lion-faced Dakini!
Because of the force and power of the recitation of Your Mantra,
Let enemies who torment us teachers, pupils and attendants,
hindering spirits who harm us, obstructive conditions, and in short,
every enduring inauspiciousness, be turned back!Host of blazing wrathful females!
Smash into dust-motes the body and speech
Of all the nature of hindering foes,
And release their consciousness in Dharma-Dhatu!Through recitation of Your mantra,
Let me quell all injury,
Achieve my aims just as I wish,
And spread the Doctrine in teaching and practice!
Above is the short prayer to one’s Gurus followed by Lama Singdongma’s prayer and mantra to invoke protection from black magic. Sindongma’s mantra should be recited 100,000 times or until the problems stop. The above methods can be done anytime and anywhere. There is no specific place or time one has to engage in it. Most important in the above practices is the motivation not to harm or damage others otherwise the practices will not be as effective.
If problems still exist then one should consult a qualified master for further rituals and protections that can be worn.
I have written brief and simple practices for Buddhists to engage in to dispel black magic, spirits and unnatural disturbances. If we follow the above diligently, it will definitely be effective. Black magic, charms, and spirits can only harm us if we have the karma to be harmed. The result always resembles the cause, so we must be very aware to have the correct attitude toward our Spiritual Guides, hold our precepts, do our daily commitment sadhanas, and transform our minds by studying and contemplating on the Dharma. This will be the true basis for protection against outer negative spirits and the inner negative spirit of self-centeredness.

Hello iam a victim from black magic. I can not practice I get so much pain in my head. Please what can I do ?
I understand from your post, that His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche has passed on. I am desperately hoping for some guidance. My spirit has been under attack for about 10 years now. I was living in midtown Toronto in an apartment when this had all started. It was the neighbor who was living down the hall. I moved out of my apartment a few months after it started and then moved back home with my Mother. I believe that this person started attacking her spirit as well. She passed away about two years ago while undergoing open heart surgery. I definitely believe this contributed to her death. It felt like this person who was orchestrating these attacks had let go and moved on. I started doing Kriya breathing practices to help dealing with my grief. Unfortunately this almost instantaneously had him attach himself to me once again. Its been so difficult. From what I have learned from my experience through the years, he is attracted to good energy. I believe he gets his energy from me. The attacks are also sexual in nature. It has become so bad in the past year. I believe he is attacking my 5 year old niece in the same way. I am at the lowest point I have ever been at in my life. I am holding on by a string. I am praying for guidance and doing OM medication to help balance my emotions, and it helps, but then I seem to fall apart after another attack happens. I am praying for some guidance and direction from you.
Hi is so fortunate I see this article. my house , had been tormented by evil spirits that was sent by my neighbor upstairs , heard from other neighbor they use some toyol or blackmagic to bite us in night and I believe almost every day my neighbor upstairs sent those evil spirits in to our house and he won’t let off. I am sorry to let you know that His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche passed into clear light in 2019. However, Rinpoche did train up some of the Kechara Pastors to be able to advise people in such cases.
From what you have described in your message, it is advisable for you to engage in the practice of Dukkar, known as Sitatapatra in Sanskrit. Her practice can help provide very strong protection and over time will help stop the effects of black magic completely. The practice of Sengdongma will be helpful, but Dukkar’s practice will be more appropriate for your situation.
You can print her picture, available here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/one-minute-story/dukkar-a-powerful-deity-that-dispels-evil-spirits and set up a simple altar with light and incense offerings. If you have the means you should set up a full altar and make offerings on a daily basis. Coupled with her actual practice, the altar itself becomes a very potent source of protection for your home.
After making offerings, you should recite her mantra 108 times daily. If you can, you should recite more mantras. Her sacred mantras is: OM SITA TA PA TREY HUM PHET.
The key to success in Dukkar’s practice is consistency. You should recite the mantra daily without fail, and make offerings to the best of your ability. Over time, the effects of this black magic will subside as you start building a strong connection with Dukkar, who is a fully enlightened Buddha.

I have better understanding about merits after reading this explanation. Gaining merits is not for ourselves but to help us to achieve enlightenment. Because when we are enlightened, we actually benefits people around us. While we are having more wisdom, there will be less suffer among the world, people even experiences more Bodhicitta from each other. So we are collecting the merits not for ourselves but for others.
However, along the journey of collecting merits, we cannot miss the purification of negative karma too. The reason is one can only be harmed by black magic, charms, and spirits if they have the karma. Therefore we need to have good motivation when employing magics. Whether it is black or white magic, the motivation not to harm others but to benefits is a must.
A very good reminder from Rinpoche, “must be very aware TO HAVE THE CORRECT ATTITUDE toward our Spiritual Guides, hold our precepts, do our daily commitment sadhanas, and transform our minds by studying and contemplating on the Dharma. This will be the true basis for protection against outer negative spirits and the inner negative spirit of self-centeredness.”
i actually tried ouija board ,with my friends, we came into contact with a very powerful spirit, my friend couldnt remove his hand from the coin, n i got a finger mark in my hand:(. i warned my friends not to do again, any help pls..

hello all of you there! hello HH Tsem tulku: i did not see you much no more on my page so i take a look. I do remeber a nun kagyu did a mahakala for me when times were wrong a few years ago. I got the enitiation afterwards. Is your mail here complementary to mahakala and will it make the effect stronger? I see someone tried to make my life going wrong with talking and finding things out(even with gsm). Evolution of material objects is not so good…. that is what is wrong with humans, if you give them something they use it wrong side.

Thank you I have been harrassed by black magic and voodoo and possession for nearly four and half years. The spirits talk through me to get me angry and invite voodoo. And my head gets voodooed all night so I cant sleep. I would welcome any blessing guidance advice– I really appreciate advice on this website and will give it a go — am reciting mantras everyday but they are not getting me more sleep– I have to make a phone call every night to someone to remove the voodoo and this is exhausting us both. Please help! This message is important. Please read it as the content of this message is about a life and death situation connected to spiritual beings who harrass and torment my dearest friend and the most precious being in the universe that i know.
Her name is Oudry and i’m writing to you because of two reasons.
One is because you recommended Dorje shugden practice and it worked:
He came to my aid and opened both my mind and my heart. My friend is the reason why i’m interested in tibetan buddhism and the powerful and wise lamas around the world.
But we live in a nation of spiritual poverty. The only thing we have is our search for enligthenment and that journey is the second reason. We have searched for a cure to our ailments and tried to learn from the universe through Psychedelics. It has both helped us, hindered us, harmed us and invited something terrible into my friend.
We came across Ayahuasca some years ago. I recommended it to her, we drank it both.
It helped me on my journey, but it has ruined her life. Not the effects or the trip.
But it activated her being, so now she hears spirits talking all the time to her.
They even calibrate her thoughts, feelings. They give and take away emotion.
They call themselfs the gods of destiny and they say that they both hurt and help people because that is their way. And they tell her that they have invaded her inner world because they want me as a shaman or something along those lines.
I have used etnogenes for a long time. Especially magic mushrooms. Even Iboga and San pedro. And have an extreme negative and positive experience from the use. They have both ruined my life and helped me rebuild my life. Think magical results that should not be possible in a western viewpoint or scientific. They are dragginng us apart. We are moving in together but now we need to find an alternative because the spirits talk all the time to her. She can’t live a healthy and she can’t have privacy. Imagine that a host of spirits commented and tinkered with every aspects of your life and your being. You can’t have nothing for yourself because they snatch it and throw something ruined back.
I don’t know what to do anymore i want to help her but i just don’t know. I have heard that there is somekind of initiation an experienced monk or lama can do in order to close this spiritual connection with the spirits. I just want my friend to have her emotions thougths and being to her self. I don’t want her to be an experiment ina host of evil and benevolent spirits games they play on us humans. We live in Sweden. I know one can donate to Kopan monestary for different pujas. And they have helped for a time, but the spirits always comes back And we are trying to get into contact with someone who has the spiritual connection to close this mental and spiritual gateway so she can have her life back. We didn’t really know what we were doing at the time. Can you recommend a lama that is willing to help if we invite him in europe that can come to our aid. Please i’m begging you. please help. This has been going on for over a year. Her relationship with her boyfriend is ruined and they have broken up because of it and he is a shell of who he was. They would probably have married and had children if not for this and then there is the matter of her family. And she just wants to push people away. Its like being behind a glassframe and beyond people are having fun. are we destined to suffer this to the end of our lives or can someone with spiritual abilities please guide me to someone who can help. I have tried to contact others but they don’t reply.

I will keep doing the prayers and mantras. I have also contacted Kopan monestary. They have replied and will do a puja for her, but i think we will donate for the rigth puja until. The spirits let go of her. They are south american in origin. And they wanted to give her something beautiful in the beginning but failed. That is why they don’t want to let go of her. We are going to be doing the dorje shugden mantras when we move in together in 2 weeks. That will help. But i think the pujas is the way. I’m just glad there exist people like you out there in the world. I’m so happy that you replied and that you care. I will wait for your next reply.

It is really beautiful to know that someone cares enough to post information like this for free for those who are suffering from being afflicted with these types of “viruses.” Abstaining from alcohol, drugs, intercourse, heavy meals, meat (especially beef and dairy products) has helped tremendously and learning about why they are to be abstained from helped. Incorporating the belief of why into the core and understanding the depth and suffering of others helped. Lucid dreaming techniques and opening up to loving others purely and loving humanity because love can shine and be found even in the darkest depths.
Hi. Im shalini. I would like to share my conditiona nd receive help, i think i have been cursed or so. From july this year i kept visting shamans which could treat me but all ended up failing. They give dofferent information regarding the thing which has now possessed me however all of them mentioned these in common, that the thing which possesses me is a jinn, vey huge one, has been with me for a very long time. What it does to me is touching eerywhere even the croutch, i once had blue black marks on my skin, i fell occasionally, i have this urinay inconsistency that has been there for a very long time, lack of sleep, wet dreams which feels very real, abnormal addiction to masturbation, disturbed sleep, loss of memory, unable to pray, disturbance during meditation, pain on vaeious parts of body especially on my neck, upper back Lumbar 3 and 4, arms, shooting pain at fingersand feet, painful period, irregular period, recently had this condition where i felt strong pulses and vibrations around my crotch, vagina. I had problems with colleagues and frie ds the like, usually a loner and had left my job and could find a suitable job as well. My dad is the one helping me once we got to know that the big jinn has possessed me, and my father to has experiencedsome of the symptoms simila to mine, unexplained pain, frequent headach, falling down, forgetting things.

Hello…I have heard that it’s NOT safe for anyone to chant Lion-faced Dakini mantra without “transmission”. Someone on Youtube said it’s dangerous and will bring bad karma if somone chants it without transmission. Is that true?
Not so…yess the energy of simahavaktra is uncontrollable but with pure motivation and bodhicitta by chanting her mantra for benefitting others and one selves then will be no offense or sins…
Goddess Singdongma is a fierce manifestation of Green Tara and her practice helps us to dispel magic, spirits and obstacles. When someone has strong case of black magic or spirit disturbances, he/she can engage in this practice as per guru’s advice. This practice will be more effective when we have great guru devotion, hold our precepts, do our daily sadhana, learn and practice dharma diligently that helps us in mind transformation.

I’m so sorry to hear about your situation. Please read the article thoroughly to understand more. I’m quoting excerpts here for your easy reference.
FOR LIGHT CASES
one may take refuge in the Three Jewels. One must not only take refuge from the mouth but one must take from the heart. Taking from the heart meaning to let go of all fears and trust the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. One’s refuge precepts must be strong and unbroken. If one has broken one’s precepts of refuge, then we can confess and regret sincerely. Holding the precepts is very powerful protection against negative spirits.
By taking refuge (having complete faith) in the Three Jewels and holding one’s precepts, we can chant the refuge mantra in Sanskrit:
NAMO GURU BEH
NAMO BUDDHA YA
NAMO DHARMA YA
NAMO SANGHA YA
One should chant this mantra at least one rosary a day, accumulating 100,000 slowly. But most importantly one must have pure relationship (samaya) with our refuge Guru or it will not be very effective. The bad relationship we have with our teachers will create such a powerful negative karma that it destroys the very basis of refuge so how can reciting refuge mantra be beneficial? All Dharma practices and accomplishments will degenerate due to broken samaya with our Guru and future Dharma practices will bear no fruit till we apologize sincerely to our Guru.
FOR STRONGER CASES
One may recite the refuge mantra combined with the recitation of the holy Heart Sutra. The Heart Sutra is the teaching on reality taught by Avalokitesvara as requested by the Superior Arhat Shariputra. When Avalokitesvara finished the discourse, it was praised by Buddha Shakyamuni Himself as valid on Vulture’s Peak. Since it is a Dharma teaching on the wrong perception of existence which causes samsara, it will be very powerful protection against negative samsaric beings.
So one can recite ONE ROSARY OF REFUGE MANTRA, followed by the recitation of the HEART SUTRA, then ONE ROSARY OF HEART SUTRA MANTRA:
THE HEART SUTRA
Homage to the Perfection of Wisdom, the Blessed Mother.
Thus I have heard. At one time the Blessed One was dwelling in Rajagriha on Massed Vultures Mountain together with a great assembly of monks and Bodhisattvas. At that time, the Blessed One was absorbed in the concentration of the countless aspects of phenomena, called Profound Illumination.
At that time also the Superior Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva, the Great Being, was looking perfectly at the practice of the profound perfection of wisdom, looking perfectly at the emptiness of inherent existence also of the five aggregates.
Then, through the power of Buddha, the Venerable Shariputra said to the Superior Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva, the Great Being, “How should a son of the lineage train who wishes to engage in the practice of the profound Perfection of Wisdom?”
Thus he spoke, and the Superior Avalokiteshvara, Great Being, replied to Venerable Shariputra as follows: “Shariputra, whatever son or daughter of the lineage wishes to engage in the practice of the profound Perfection of Wisdom should look perfectly like this: subsequently looking perfectly and correctly at the emptiness of inherent existence also of the five aggregates.”
“Form is empty; emptiness is form. Emptiness is not other than form; form also is not other than emptiness. Likewise, feeling, discrimination, compositional factors and consciousness are empty.”
“Shariputra, like this all phenomena are merely empty, having no characteristics. They are not produced and do not cease. They have no defilement and no separation from defilement. They have no decrease and no increase.”
“Therefore, Shariputra, in emptiness there is no form, no feeling, no discrimination, no compositional factors, no consciousness. There is no eye, no ear, no nose, no tongue, no body, no mind; no form, no sound, no smell, no taste, no tactile object, no phenomenon. There is no eye element and so forth up to no mind element and also up to no element of mental consciousness. There is no ignorance and no exhaustion of ignorance, and so forth up to no ageing and death and no exhaustion of ageing and death. Likewise, there is no suffering, origin, cessation or path; no exalted wisdom, no attainment and also no non-attainment.”
“Therefore, the mantra of the perfection of wisdom, the mantra of great knowledge, the unsurpassed mantra, the equal-to-the-unequalled mantra, the mantra that thoroughly pacifies all suffering, since it is not false, should be known as the truth. The mantra of the Perfection of Wisdom is proclaimed: “TAYATHA OM GATEY GATEY PARAGATEY PARASAMGATEY BODHI SOHA”
“Shariputra, a Bodhisattva, a Great Being, should train in the profound perfection of wisdom like this.”
Then the Blessed One arose from that concentration and said to the Superior Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva, the Great Being, that he had spoken well: “Good, good, O son of the lineage. It is like that. Since it is like that, just as you have revealed, in that way the profound perfection of wisdom should be practiced, and the Tathagatas will also rejoice.”
When the Blessed One had said this, the Venerable Shariputra, the Superior Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva, the Great Being, and that entire assembly of disciples as well as the worldly beings – gods, humans, demi-gods and spirits – were delighted and highly praised what had been spoken by the Blessed One.
HEART SUTRA MANTRA
– TAYATHA OM GATEY GATEY PARAGATEY PARASAMGATEY BODHI SOHA
FOR VERY STRONG CASES OF BLACK MAGIC OR SPIRIT DISTURBANCES
For very strong cases of black magic or spirit disturbances then one can engage in the practice of Singdongma.
Instructions:
1. Firstly we take refuge by reciting the refuge mantra 21 times.
2. Afterwards we do the mantra of Je Tsongkhapa 21 times, strongly believing the Tsongkhapa is one with our Gurus. Since Tsongkhapa have manifested in a Guru’s form, it will be easier to identify them with our personal gurus. If we do not have a guru we can still recite their mantras having firm faith in them as living Buddhas.
3. Then we proceed to do a short prayer to the fierce Goddess Singdongma who is a fierce manifestation of Green Tara arisen to dispel magic, spirits and obstacles. Sindongma’s mantra should be recited 100,000 times or until the problems stop. The above methods can be done anytime and anywhere. There is no specific place or time one has to engage in it. Most important in the above practices is the motivation not to harm or damage others otherwise the practices will not
be as effective. If problems still exist then one should consult a qualified master for further rituals and protections that can be worn.

Thank you for sharing this. My live-in partner for 2 1/2 year is most probably a victim of black magic. What makes makes me so sad is that I am now pregnant of our child. We were happy, but so suddenly he totally changed, and will leave the relationship for another girl who he doesn´t even know personally before. He normally is a very good person and focused in everything he does, faithful and thoughtful towards me. But now he is having all the signs of being under a spell of black magic. He is disoriented,a total change of personality within a very short time, demonstrating strong disgust & dislike to me just after one week, and we didn´t even quarrel or such. He normally is a happy and positive person, but now he is unhappy, discontented, irritated of everything and move disorientedly like a living dead person. And what is so painful of all, is he used to trust me with everything before, but out from nowhere after only a week time, all his trust is gone, and he acts as if I have betrayed him or as if somebody or some force is telling him that I cannot be trusted anymore. And all this time I did nothing but be good and supportive to everything he does. If it has only been me, I could still think about of just giving up and just let everything go, but for the sake of our child who will be born soon, I thought I´ll give it a real hard try. I am now following all instructions and saying each mantra including the Sengdongma, as what he is undergoing looks really severe. Specially for the sake of our child I am carrying now, I really trust Sengdongma´s power will win as I really believe that the power of goodness is strongest of all powers. May buddha bless all of us here!
PS… by the way, his change has absolutely nothing to do with our coming child, because he was happy about it, so this is really from some other unexplainable force …. may buddha bless us!
I thought I´d write a short testimony to help others. The mantra showed some results for me after 3 days of mantras. I still kept on reciting to get the final result. I´ll write another testimony when it does. Even very religious and prayerful persons have been known to be possessed. Thanks Pastor Adeline share this link to me & thanks Rinpoche for sharing such a great post. I’m sure this will benefit those who suffer spiritual possession. I have many friends who experience this & I couldn’t help at all. Since one year I have no idea whether I have been under the spell of black magic or some spirit haunting on its own. I feel some spirit is after me, where ever I go (any place) it disturbs me by making some sounds at the back of my head only whenever I lie down during night or day i.e. before I fall asleep. I also feel something like rat moving on my legs, hands and somebody waking me but when I open my eyes I could see no body. I also feel sometimes something moving near the center of my left ear. Hi. I’m David and for the last 5 years at least, I have been plagued by something I find hard to name and impossible to talk about. I dated a thai lady boy for 2 years and it was a rough time. I always felt there was something happening with her and her friends. Things would happen to me, like random people starring at me or talking to each other but so I could hear them and they would be talking about things in my life. I also have experienced several occasions when strangers are talking to me in situations like interviews and have been manipulated into saying things to me that suggests they know secret things about me that they just wouldn’t know. More worryingly they seem to be able to do this with anyone, including my friends and family. They constantly make people say things that are either designed to make me feel uncomfortable or that I am thinking at that time. With live television, they can make people respond to questions or statements myself and my friends make while watching it, a lot of the time when what we are talking about is nothing to do with what we are watching. My flat mate has become aware if this one having spent so much time with me watching live sports. I remember one occasion sending a text to my then girlfriend, asking for forgiveness for any lies I had ever told. I was standing outside a train station and within 5 seconds of sending the text, a lady came up to me and said thank you, smiled and walked off. This kind of thing has happened on several if not dozens of occasions over the last 5 years and while icolated, could be coincidence, but when added together at such a high rate, has led me to ask, when does coincidence become reality. Even with all I have lived through, the one thing that drives me on to know it is real, is an incident at her house where I was alone in bed and thinking thoughts, from her flat mates room next door, I could here them talking about things I had in my head and discussing what I was thinking and what every thought I had meant. To test that this was happening, I started singing a song in my head. One of them asked what I was saying and then another said I was singing a muse sing and that they were a good band. My next thought was, they’re a great band mate, to which they then realised I could hear them. I then briefly spoke through my thoughts to them, there was a reaction and then it stopped. Later my ex came into the room and claimed 2 people were having an argument next door, the same 2 voices I heard talking about my thoughts. This lasted about 10 minutes and was not some mixed up understanding between what I thought and what she claimed to be. I don’t know if they revelled this part to me so I would always know it to be true what was happening and therefore make me even more crazy, or bah, or if I just got lucky to catch them out. I suspect the first is more likely.
I really don’t know how to deal with this as it is not something I can talk about without sounding crazy and as crazy as my head tells me it all is, my countless experience tells me it’s true and it is ruining my life.
I don’t know if you or anyone can help me but I really don’t know where else to ask for help

I wish very much your fears and problems dissipate. Please do the practice of Sindongma as stated here and complete Her sacred mantra 108,000 asap. You do not need to let others know your doing this practice and keep it in your heart. Print out Sindongma’s picture and keep it near you.
Do this first and see how you feel upon completion.

Just a few questions that I have been practice the lion face dakini mantra for about 7 months and I felt so great about it. 1) in my workplace , there are few people have this so called ” kumamtong” something like a baby ghost with them, being a very energy sensitive person, I can “feel” the presence of the kumamtong spirit and feel nausea from time to time. 2) a co- worker / friend of mine seems to have all the bad luck around her & I tried everything to help her but it seems she doesn’t want to be happy yet getting very depressed and when I was around her, I feel the dark energy around me which makes me have pain on my solar plexus chakra…I wonder if this particular mantra would help me specifically as well as heal all the ppl and situation involved? Or should I do other mantra as well? Please advise and thank you.

Thanks for Rinpoche’s teaching. I was touched when Rinpoche mention Buddhism is for benefits other ,it didn’t teach us how to harm others. It was very lost and scare if we really encounter black magic or spirit. We can share the teaching for those in need but most importantly you must recite and apologise sincerely if really do wrong.

Lord Buddha has never taught any magic, black or white irrespective, or in any form or method to harm others. If we practise any such magic to fulfil our temperory wishes or aims, it will definitely have repercussion, or back lashes. Buddhism therefore, never have such method or form, to be used to harm others, as said by our Lama. But, in Buddhism, each school of buddhism has valid methods to counter such offensive practices or threats, depending on how such a phenomenum has arised or been caused. Black magic, charms and spirits can only harm us if we have the karma to be harmed, as “Result always resembles the cause”, as reiterated by our Guru. So we must be very aware to have the correct attitude towards our spiritual guide, hold our precepts well, do our daily sadhana commitments and transform our minds by studying and contemplating well on the Dharma – a true basis for protection against negative phenomenum. Om mani padme hung.
There is so much information and thought in this teaching, it will bring people much good and protection against Black Magic and Spirits. Thank you for sharing this teaching with us Rinpoche, i hope there will be more of teaching like this.

Many thanks for this Lama La, I had someone staying in my house, who seemed ok at first but then was showing signs of suffering from black magic. I was doing Tsongkapa mantras and they became increasingly frightened of the chanting and left without warning. I feel sad for them, but do not know where they are living now. If I continue with this chanting with them in mind, will it still help them?

Normally, when you begin this practice, more bad things would happen due to spirits being attracted or agitated by the practice and also your negative karma would have to burn out before the good karma comes into action.
Dear Rinpoche, thank you for bringing this post up again,as I had been approached by a young lady, after a Setrap puja, who said she was being deeply troubled by spirits. I had advised her to do the Setrap practice daily with mantra recitation and serkym offering.
She recently reported that she was still troubled by the spirits,one of whom was saying “No” to Setrap, as though she(the female spirit) did not want to leave her.I told her to be persevering and to continue the practice of Setrap, as it is likely that initially the spirits would ‘revolt’.
I see now that she needs a powerful practice like Singdongma.I have studied this post carefully and will advise her on how to do the Singdongma practice .

I am a very dedicated practitioner, but find that the more my understanding, realisations and devotion grows, the worse the circumstances in my life become…..endless, stressful difficulties. Am I very fortunate or very unfortunate? Seems ridiculous to ask, but I genuinely am suffering badly, and this thwarts my development of great compassion and the will and strength to reach out and help others.

Dear Rinchen Tsering, your question is very good. You have to be an ‘expert’ to know the difference of where the disturbances are coming from karma, bad luck or spirits. But in the end it’s all a result of karma, if we have dry skin because of weather, not enough water or environment, we just apply moisturizer. So where the dry skin comes from doesn’t matter, what matter is the moisturizer can solve the dry skin problem. Similarily, if you do dharma practice and Singdongma, it will heal all the problems no matter where they come from. That is important. Do you practice and I give you my good wishes and prayers. Spirits can go, through someones back, into the person and speak. Like yesterday in my neighbour and saying” don’t put your nose in someone else his business, you do nothing else”. Hearing that i was not feeling well. How can we protect our back? Neighbour: phones a lot, and i don’t understand he says, becomes angry, and he may not come in in my apt and i rarely go into his. I have heard that some people did the prayers and felt happier or even more relieved after doing so.
I also remember that Rinpoche told my uncle previously to do Singdongma practices as my baby cousins were being having some disturbances. I understood from my uncle that after he did these prayers, my cousins were not experiencing these disturbances anymore. Allowing my cousins, uncle and aunt to have a better rest at night.
It would be great to have an audio teaching on how to pronounce the mantra if it is possible. Thank you!

This is a very beneficial post, as it states out some basic information about practices against black magic and also the step-by-step guide.
I guess I would have to say that I hope there is no one day that I need to do this practice for myself. But now knowing this has given me the knowledge as to what can be done if any of my the person that I know (or even myself) has got into issues where he/she needs the protection of Goddess Singdongma.

Dear Rinpoche, this teaching is so timely. Just the other day, my mother in law was just telling me that she saw a black shadow near the door of her bedroom. This is not the first time as she has complain that she always hear funny noise disturbing her when she sleeps and she seems to think there are spirit(s) following her for many years now. She is now almost 80 years old and not english literate. Will the prayers be just as effective if we do the prayers on her behalf? Her level of faith for the 3 Jewels is also very limited. We hope we can do the prayers to help her and the spirit(s) that has been following her. Thank you Rinpoche.
If you feel something is following you, feel something is in your house, being watched at times yet you see nothing, then it could be an invisible entity connected to you. Whether the entity is harmful or not is dependent on many factors. I get asked this many times. In fact hundreds of times. So if you feel, sense, or see this, you can do this practice I will recommend. If you do this practice consistently and long term, thse entities will go away/and you will be protected. ..If you continuously do this practice, collect merits and do the practice you’ll be protected for sure. You can bless your house, people, animals and environment with this practice and it’s sacred mantra. You’ll see a difference long term. In the beginning while you do this practice, the ‘disturbances’ can get ‘stronger’ & increase for a while because they don’t want to go. They will go & your space will become calm again if you persist. I hope this helps some of you. If we can reincarnate, leave our body, then there is a mind that sometimes get trapped. We can help these beings move on. If you are not having disturbances, then don’t invite these beings or go and be a ‘ghostbuster’ as they can follow you back home and really disturb you. Don’t engage in black spells, ouija boards, card divinations or any divinations, etc. I get asked alot, thought to share something here.
Do the mantra for your mother. Make offerings to Three Jewels. Put a Dukkar Chakra over the inside door of your mother’s bedroom and also hang a picture of the Deity you will recite the mantra of in her bedroom over her bed where her head is. It can be Singdongma or Dukkar.
Do this first. If the problems persist, let Beng Kooi know. I will let you know what else to do further. TR

When Rinpoche posted this link on Rinpoche’s Facebook Fanpage, a few people commented saying that there is no such thing as black magic.
I have always found that very odd – just because you don’t know about or experience something, does not mean it does not exist. For example, if I ask you to remember what you did when you were five, you cannot remember. Just because you don’t know about it, does not mean it did not happen. Likewise with black magic – just because it has not happened to you, does not mean it does not exist.
If black magic did not exist, the practices to counter it would not exist and the lamas who practise Singdongma etc would’ve stopped a long time ago!
Rinpoche has given us here a powerful Dharma teaching that not only shows us how to help people who have problems of black magic and spirit harm. In this teaching, Rinpoche shows us that the deeper level of protection comes from a mind that is fortified by the strong practice of Guru devotion, holding our refuge precepts well and transforming our minds.
Rinpoche has also emphasized how important it is to accumulate merits and purify our negative karma continuously. Above all, he reminds us here that we need to collect a tremendous amount of merits with Bodhicitta motivation, as only this will propel us towards Buddhahood. Only when we have attained Buddhahood can we be able to skillfully bring all sentient beings to Enlightenment. The fact that some of us in Malaysia are very lucky to be able to be close to Dharma because of the existence and the hard work of Rinpoche and Kecharians, especially for some of us which who does not understand Mandarin. As a Malaysian we are being brought up with a very little knowledge about religion, to me praying was just for some specific occasion or simply following our elder instructions just as they have been following instructions from their elders too , these go on for generations…in my family. Religion has became a custom. So it was really an eye opener when I have the chance to know Buddhism, it is not as simple as occasionally offering joss sticks and making wishes to benefit oneself. The teachings of Rinpoche completely changed my perspective on how I used to look at religion especially, Buddhism. Buddhism not just only for protection but with a good teacher you are able to learn much more based on logical explanation and transformation of one’s mind to do good things for others. There are so much to learn everyday in Buddhism.
Thank you Rinpoche. I didn’t know before this, that there are so many different forms of magic. But as many forms as there are, I recall Rinpoche mentioning that black magic and spells cannot harm us if we do not have the karma to be affected by them. Therefore fundamentally regardless of whether we have disturbances or not, it is good to keep doing Dharma work to constantly negate our bad karma. I am especially surprised that even the basic taking of refuge have the power to dispel basic disturbances. Indeed the Three Jewels is that potent that the mere believe and submission to them make a big difference.
For those who indulge in such dark arts, I wonder if they realize the karmic repercussions of their actions when they commission black magic to be cast on another person or they themselves do it. What a way to bind oneself to powers and beings they do not understand or can control.

Thank you rinpoche for bringing this post up again. This is one of the more popular practices around for repelling negative forces because we live in Asia where there’s still a thriving belief and practice of dabbling with spirits and black magic.
I have not experience anything that requires Sengdongma’s practice yet but I have encounters with certain types of spirits that paralyzes me in my sleep. For my case, Rinpoche had recommended White Umbrella though. I do know that Rinpoche had given Sengdongma statue, prayer and practice to Paul many years ago because he sees very scary and possibly malevolent spirits that disturb him. He has not told me much, probably because he is scared and don’t want to reveal details fearing it will call upon them.
Definitely a powerful practice to have and keep even if you are not encountering any disturbances because you will never know who might need it. I get a lot of questions as to why Tibetan Buddhism have such ferocious deities and they themselves look like monsters. I remember Rinpoche once explained in a funny but very logical way that..well if you got ferocious “hantus” or ghosts coming to disturb you or is attacking you, do you think a peaceful aspect of the Buddha like Kuan Yin is gonna scared them? Hence these Buddhas manifest in an even more frightening ferocious form then the evil spirits attacking you to help subdue them.
Now we must remember the Buddhas no matter how ferocious are Buddhas and they are pure compassion in nature, they do not hurt or harm the spirit per se but rather counter the spirits’ ego and bind them, they then surrender and become part of the entourage and in the end assist the Dharma Protectors to do Dharma and hence they also collect some merits to get out of their horrible state of being in the lower realms. Just like the history of how Sengdongma subdued a demon called Garab Wangchuk whose daughter was a lion-faced demoness called Tramen Sengdongma.

Black magic is being practiced widely in this part of the world and also in certain parts of Africa , South America . Spirits , on the other hand, are everywhere.
I know of several cases where people had black magic placed on them, and how they and their families had suffered. I know of one particular lady who had very severe black magic sent to her, and she went everywhere for help , but she eventually died suddenly of a ‘ massive heart attack’ that even her doctors were very shocked. Her family wanted an autopsy done to find out the true cause of her death, and the final autopsy came back with nothing conclusive – and definitely not a heart attack.
This case happened years ago, before i met Rinpoche. Now on reflection, i feel that this lady did not have the karma to know Rinpoche then, if she had, she would be saved. I also think that there is the karmic link between the person sending the black magic and the recipient of the black magic.
It also makes me wonder how negative the karma would be for the one who sends the black magic that had caused such deep pain and suffering to the recipient and her family.
This is not the first time I read this article and I still learn something new from it.
I like the analogy saying listening to Dharma teachings without applying them as a sick person praising how great is the doctor or medicine but he/she never take the medicine or advice. Taking refuge and initiations but never holding to them same as keep ourselves cold without wearing the warm coat we have…It’s kind of stupid and we keep doing the stupid things…out of ignorance

In Malaysia, it’s very easy to hear someone has been disturbed by black magic. Not many of these people know how to handle it or where to look for help. The black magic will be following them for very long time. If we do not dispel it correctly and fast enough, it could be very dangerous.
Glad that Kechara now have a group of Rinpoche’s students who had learned up so many type of pujas for many types of problems – Singdongma is such a short and sweet yet extremely powerful prayers.
So many people are afflicted by spirits and black magic have gotten hold of this and I also have given to many of the people I have spoken to over email when they have encountered problems of such nature. Please share with as many people possible as this is an authentic information about from Gaden and Rinpoche of how to overcome problems of such a nature.

I hope I can use this method to stop the people who practise black magic to obtain worldly things. I’ve been suffering many many years because these people whom are close never stop using the black way. The worst is that these people claimed that they are very pure Buddhist. Every day I do chant these words ‘Buddha teaches us the right moderate path not stealing in any means whether physically or spiritually.’ This time, I hope with the mantra it will really liberate us away from these people.
If only if my karma does not allow me to meet with them again I would be very grateful.

In parts of the Asian sub-continent, black magic and exorcism is a trade that still thrives. People in towns and villages acknowledges that black magic and charms are common.
Some members of the Asian community rely on religious charms and usually local holy men can be inundated with requests from people with social and personal issues.
It is important that we know how to protect ourselves and Rinpoche has kindly shared a way to “diagnose”, solutions and practice that we can do ourselves. Do share it with your friends and loved ones, may they be protected always by the three jewels.
A proper way for us to advise people under black magic.
However, we do not know when our negative karma would be ripen, therefore “prevention than cure” is important. Means we still need to take refuge , holding vows, pure guru samaya, collecting merit with Buddhicitta motivation, transform ourselves to better person by practicing the Dharma we learn.

Before she got the practice, she was like a mini zombie and was quite sickly. She had also told me about being disturbed, even if she was doing very gentle practices and prayers.
The last time I spoke to her (just a few days ago), she’s already recited over 30,000 mantras and is looking really excellent. Her health is back, her face is bright and glowing (and not like the walking dead, like last time!) and she looks healthy, less tired and much stronger, inside out. (Jia you jia you!)
Rinpoche has since advised her to continue doing the practice every day of her life, even after she has completed the 100,000 mantras. I’m really glad she has this help – she looks better than I’ve ever seen her. The practice will also be able to help her family and sisters who she’s very close to 🙂
Rinpoche also told us recently that Singdongma has an entourage that is 60-million strong. Her practice is extremely powerful for protection and we must always think that she really does come when we invoke her – because she does. She is a deity in her own right – not just an entourage of Vajrayogini, but a fully enlightened being herself. So it is totally safe to take full refuge in her.

Over the years, I have heard many stories about black magic, I do not know whether they are real, but most of the time, when people are disturbed by black magics, they tend to seek help from local bomoh or chinese Mao-shan Taoist.
A recent case I heard is that the person (shifu) who helped to dispel black magic used human blood to feed another spirit (Hokkien: “Kwee Kia” which means spirit of dead fetus) so that this “Kwee Kia” can help him chase away the spirit who created problem. To me, this is something totally unacceptable. How can one using someone’s spirit to help him dispel black magic?
For whatever reason, I do not think this is a compassionate action even though it seems like the shifu was trying to help out of good intention.
Now with this Goddess Singdongma practice, hopefully one day I can offer my help to those who needs it.
I read this teaching in No More Cave many years ago when Kechara House is located in current Kechara Media and Publications. Uncle Lai ( David Lai’s father) is the one who show me Kechara House when i first visit. This is so power not just the prayer is the explanation about the situation and how should we view and “deal” with it.
Take refuge, have faith in 3 jewels and have compassion toward the being. Rinpoche said we should not recite Mantra to punish or fight with the spirit/ black magic, in fact, using this practice for protection and generate compassion towards them, if we do it well, we bless these beings through this practice.

Considered to be the secret form of Vajrayogini, Lion-faced Dakini also has a relationship to Troma and the practice of chöd. She is appropriate for clearing obstacles of the most pervasive and malignant kind, and cutting through the “three poisons” of mind. This ancient practice has been important in Tibetan Buddhism since the time of Guru Rinpoche. PeGyal Lingpa recieved this revelation directly from Padmasambhava, appearing in a red-black form, instead of the more common dark blue manifestation. This indicates that this is the inner form of the yidam, allied to the Pema family. Sengdongma is particularly focused on pacifying the destructive inlufence of the Mamos, the forces of distrubed “yin” or feminine demonic energies. The wanton destruction of the environment and degredation of human culture greatly stirs up and enrages these elemental force. They retaliate with disease, epidemics, weather disturbances and calamaties on a major scale. This practice is one of the great antidotes for this critical time of the “five degenerations.”
As wrathful dakini, she is also one of the Phramenma, a group of female deities from the Bardo Thödol, or ‘Tibetan Book of the Dead’.
History
At the time of Buddha Amitabha, many aeons even before Shakyamuni Buddha, there was a demon called Garab Wangchuk whose daughter was a lion-faced demoness called Tramen Sengdongma. She delighted in taking the lives of countless beings, and by harming practitioners she increased the negative forces in the world and undermined the Amitabha Buddha’s doctrine. All the buddhas gathered together and concluded that to tame her they would need to manifest an identical-looking being. The enlightened beings’ collective wisdom arose in the form of a wisdom being – the Lion-faced Dakini, empowered by all the buddhas of the ten directions with their power and compassion to tame the demoness. The Dakini became far more powerful than the demoness, who then began to lose her strength. While the Dakini was in a deep samadhi of taming the maras, countless dakinis emanated from her and subdued all the demons. Tramen Sengdongma, now pacified, took an oath to serve the dharma and became a protector. Iconography Simhamukha is iconographically represented as a wrathful deity who is usually depicted as a dark blue, or maroon, coloured lion-faced female and is associated with the direction East.
As Simhavaktra, an alternate form of Simhamukha, she is also an attendant of the Dharmapala Palden Lhamo, in which case she is depicted as carrying both a kapala, or skullcap, and a kartika, or ritual knife. Snarling and roaring with a gaping large mouth on a white lion face, Simhamukha stands fierce and menacing with two hands, dark blue in color, with protruding fangs, curled tongue, two large round eyes and dark green flowing hair. The right hand holds aloft a curved flaying knife with a gold vajra handle. The left clutches to the heart a white skullcup filled with blood. Adorned with a crown of five skulls, bone necklace and gold ornaments she wears a green silk scarf and a barely discernable tiger skin skirt. In a dancing posture with the left leg extended and the right drawn up she stands atop a red corpse seat, sun disc and a pink lotus surrounded by a circle of flame and smoke. With a body black in colour, the face is that of a white lion, with three round yellow eyes, blazing fiercely with a gaping mouth, a yellow beard, eyebrows and hair flowing upward. The right hand holds upraised a curved knife to the sky, left a skullcup of blood to the heart, carrying a khatvanga staff tipped with a trident in the bend of the elbow supported against the shoulder. Adorned with a tiara of five skulls, red scarf, elephant skin, bone ornaments, a long snake and fifty freshly severed heads as a necklace, she wears a tiger skin skirt. Standing on the left leg with the right drawn up, trampling on a double triangle symbol, corpse, sun and multi-coloured lotus seat, Simhamukha in a mood of great fierceness dwells in the middle of a blazing fire of pristine awareness.
In the Sarma (new) Schools the dakini Simhamukha is a tutelary deity arising out of the Cakrasamvara cycle of Tantras and belongs to the anuttarayoga ‘wisdom’ classification. The Sarma tradition Simhamukha is unrelated to the deity of the same name and appearance in the Nyingma ‘Terma’ (treasure) traditions. In that tradition, of the many forms of Padmasambhava, she is regarded as the secret form of Guru Rinpoche. In the sadhana for Vajra Dakini Simhamukha, written by Jamgon Kongtrul, the goddess is described as follows: “The color of her body is a dark azure, like the dark color of the gathering storm clouds. And she is exceedingly wrathful. She has a single face and two arms. Her lion’s face is white in color and turns slightly to the right. The expression on her face is fierce and wrathful. From her three red eyes come flashes of lightning and her lion’s roar is like thunder. The hair of her head is long and black and made of iron. From this mass of hair that is billowing about everywhere (as if in a storm) is projected miniature phurpas like live sparks. With her right hand she flourished a five-pronged vajra in the sky and with her left hand she holds before her heart a kapala skull-cup filled with blood. She has a khatvanga staff cradled in the crook of her left arm. She girds her loins with a skirt made of a tiger skin and, as a mantle, she wears the hide of an elephant and a flayed human skin. In all respects, she is garbed in the eight-fold attire of the cremation ground. She adorns herself with a long garland of dried and freshly severed human heads, as well as with necklaces of human bone. She is adorned with various kinds of fearful apparitions and at her navel is the sun and moon. Her two legs are extended and drawn up in the dance position of ardhaparyanka, while she stands amidst the blazing masses of the flames of wisdom. At her forehead is the white syllable OM, at her throat is the red syllable AH, and at her throat is the blue syllable HUM. Then from the syllable HUM in her heart center there emanate rays of light, and from the great violently burning cremation ground in the land of Uddiyana, which is in the western direction, is invoked the Jnana Dakini Simhamukha, who is surrounded by retinues of hundreds of thousands of dreadful Matrika goddesses, together with the ocean-like hosts of guardian spirits who are her attendants.”
Practice In the time of the 100-year lifespans, Buddha Shakyamuni appeared in the world and turned the wheel of dharma in many places such as Varanasi, Bodhgaya, Vulture’s Peak, and the charnel ground of Lanka, teaching on many levels including Vajrayana. He said that at that time it was as if the sun were in the center of the sky, and there was no darkness anywhere, but when the sun went down then the darkness of ignorance would arise. But the Lord Buddha continued that there would be a method to dispel this ignorance, and so Vajrapani requested that Lord Buddha teach this method. Shakyamuni Buddha rested in the samadhi of taming the maras, and then taught the whole cycle of the Lion-faced Dakini. He taught in many different ways, and these transmissions were concealed by Vajrapani as treasures after he received them. Apart from its mantra recitation, Sengdongma practice contains the element of “dokpa” or reversal of negativity.
Accompanied by the clapping of hands (bringing earth and heaven together), negative conditions, sickness and misfortunes of all kind are turned away and averted, so that they never manifest or disturb the tantric practitioner’s health, wellness or spiritual progress.
I knew of a lady who when she went to bed at night, she would feel unseen hands touch her body and disturb her sleep. This happened many times. She sought help from many places without relief. When she saw me, I gave her Singdongma. She invited a statue home, set up a shrine for Her and did Singdongma’s mantra/prayer daily. The unseen hands stopped disturbing her & this was ten years ago. She does her prayer daily to Singongma till now.

In the case of spiritual possesion, from the people who had experienced them, the describtion given is that the characteristic behaviour of the possessed person actually changes. They seemed no longer themselves. They may become very aggressive, rough or violent at times, eat and drink exessively and may sometimes become animalistic, ranting and snorting at times. It seems everypart of their human body become heavy and stiff, whereby the possessed person has no control over it. At the end of the possessed show, the possessed person would feel completely drained out, without knowing what has happened. Thank you once again Rinpoche, for your ever deep concern in bringing out such effective remedies for your students, friends and all beings.

I always do not believe the effectiveness of black magic towards myself particularly, not because I have special power to protect myself but confidently I know the Guru and 3 Jewels always protect me from any bad energy. Of course I do not purposely offend other people’s practices. I strongly disagree to use any black magic to get whatever we want which most likely is motivated by bad intention.
The things they may get by using black magic are 100% impermanence, so why want to generate huge negative karma for something which could not last long? Very strange!!!

I remember Rinpoche advising me to chant the Heart Sutra and the Guru mantra when I had lots of spirit disturbances. Ever since I started chanting daily till now, the disturbances have stopped. It’s very effective. Thank you Rinpoche for posting this to the public. Many people will benefit from this knowledge!
I’ve known of a handful of such spirit disturbance cases and how Rinpoche has helped by advising them to do certain prayers, retreats and also have blessed items with them and in their homes.
Rinpoche has kindly taken the time out to help so many more whom I do not know of personally. These prayers which Rinpoche gives come from a long lineage where thousands and thousands of people have practiced and benefitted from.
Singdongma’s blessings are just the same for everyone but from our side, we must follow the advice as given to the best of our ability.
What a powerful analogy Rinpoche gave on what we need to do if we want to take full advantage of what we have already received : “Taking refuge and initiations but not familiarizing and holding on to the precepts is likened to receiving a warm coat and not wearing it while standing in the cold shivering.
“Black magic, charms and spirits can only harm us if we have the karma to be harmed.
The result always resemble the cause.
No spirits can harm us if we diligently hold our precepts, do our daily sadhana commitments, transform our minds through study and contemplating the Dharma, have awareness and proper attitude towards our spiritual guides.”

I have come across many cases of people exhibiting weird behaviour and unexplained personality changes which match the 6 signs mentioned here.It is very useful info indeed as often we are not sure if someone’s illness is psychotic in nature or under charm / magic. i recalled many years ago , a friend requested for help to stop disturbances in his house. Pastor chia and a few of us went and we recited the Refuge prayers and Heart sutra and mantra.It was very effective as my friend did not mention about further disturbances in his house after that.
As buddhists, as Rinpoche had said, if we maintain our samaya and sincerely follow our Refuge commitments & vows we already have the best protection against the harm of humans and non humans.
It is s common nowadays to hear of people being disturbed by negative forces. Some people do not know where or who to turn to for help.
Now with Rinpoche’s teaching, we can share the method to dispel.

Great teachings for protections…
Yesterday I was telling Mei Fong and May Ong (KH staff) on this practice as I have the booklet written by Rinpoche, published by KMP in 2004.
It was given to me by kind James Loong, he said since I meet many people in KH I can make photocopies of it to pass to whoever needs it. Just the other day I was talking to a member who told me of her problems being disturbed in her sleeps. So, I advised her to try this practice as well as to put the Dukkar picture as explained in Rinpoche’s earlier blog post. If her problems is still persist, I will advise her to contact Puja House to sponsor pujas n to seek for divination if it is very serious.

You can also direct people to this blog post of Rinpoche’s which gives a holistic solution to our spirit and other problems, which is the Dharma. Merely reciting the mantras and prayers without the main Dharma practice is not as effective. I think that many people seek an instant cure for their spiritual problems, but not tackling the cause itself. That is why it is so important for people to learn Dharma so they can cut the root causes of their afflictions.
As Rinpoche says at the end, “we must be very aware to have the correct attitude toward our Spiritual Guides, hold our precepts, do our daily commitment sadhanas, and transform our minds by studying and contemplating on the Dharma. This will be the true basis for protection against outer negative spirits and the inner negative spirit of self-centeredness.”

The practice of Singdongma is most useful for a person who is disturbed by unseen entities. Please be aware that not every headache and chills up the spine is caused by some spirits. We must be very discerning and aware. How? I believe that by taking refuge and understand that taking refuge requires for us to examine our mind, action and behaviour, a deeper awareness of reality starts to develop. And learning the Dharma also gives rise to wisdom and the comprehension of the absolute truth. Finally and the most important aspect is Guru devotion for the Guru knows more than we do and when we listen, we are surely guided out of our own stupidity, arrogance and ignorance. Therefore, I believe with this mindset, the practice of Singdongma will operate from a radically different perspective. 🙂 _/\_
Internal realization is of utmost important in today”s world. We have been so obsessed with material well beings that we have distanced ourselves spiritually. With material attachments comes selfishness and ignorance. In order to achieve these material goals, it is with no surprises that most or many mortal beings will do whatever necessary to achieve these worldly attachments, eg, harming others intentionally or unintentionally.
If we as mortal beings could just slow down for a moment, let go of our attachments, reflect on our current situation, this world would be a much safer and positive world to live in.
Thank you, Rinpoche, for teaching us these methods. By holding to our Refuge vows sincerely, one can find inner peace. And most importantly, one must go all the way with what Rinpoche has taught us. It all begin with us transforming our mind, reflect, practice, reflect, practice with sincerity and integrity.

I remember once Rinpoche prescribed Singdongma practice to a close student of his. This lady had spirit disturbances that she was attack by them every night. Some of the spirits are so strong that they actually drag her out of the bed. Rinpoche put her on the Singdongma practice and it stop after awhile later.
The MOST IMPORTANT thing about this is that when a practice is given to a person who has been disturbed, the spirits will try to attack more once the person start a certain practice. It will get worst at the beginning but that is because the spirits are afraid cause it is powerful and has effect. They will do anything to stop you from practicing or saying the mantra. DO NOT STOP and continue. It will quiten down after awhile.

Hi, my daughter is struggling with what I think is many strong elemental spirits and also maybe some bad wishes manifesting as problems for her. She is a musical performer/singer/songwriter and she is trying to get to LA to record another CD but each time she is about to book her flight she has gotten very sick >usually including laryngytus. She is getting worse and so I was very touched when Rinpoche said to do Singhamuka practice. She is a Dharma practitioner and she writes and sings Dharma Praises and mantras. I have read in Lam Rim that there are many many spirits who can harm people who practice Dharma. Yoko said to thank you for your loving care Rinpoche. So right now she is struggling with a cold that keeps returning plus this night terrors. I apologize if this is too much detail. She just said to me : “please say to Rinoche that I feel like I want to bring Dharma to the world through my music but each time I try I get big obstacles”.
Shall I do anything else to help the situation?
