The Truth About Who Saved the 14th Dalai Lama
(by Tsem Rinpoche and Martin Chow)
Prologue
When the Tibetan leadership first implemented the ban on the practice of Dorje Shugden over 20 years ago, the main reason they gave for the prohibition was that this Protector practice endangers the life of the beloved Tibetan god-king, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. In addition, they said that Dorje Shugden jeopardises the efforts of the Tibetan people to regain their freedom from China and to return to their homeland.
These accusations, in essence, framed Dorje Shugden as the main enemy of the Tibetan people and the Buddhadharma. It falsely positioned Dorje Shugden as a malevolent being whose supposed purpose is to sabotage the success of the Tibetan cause, and hinder the spread of Dharma by supposedly harming the Dalai Lama’s life. By tarnishing, albeit incorrectly, the reputation of this enlightened Dharma Protector, it was the Tibetan leadership’s intention to enrage not only the Tibetans themselves, but global devotees of the Dalai Lama. And they were very effective in doing so; the Tibetan leadership who are based in Dharamsala, North India were able to beguile unsuspecting Tibetan Buddhists into supporting the very unholy enterprise of banning Dorje Shugden’s practice.
In fact, nothing that the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA; the Tibetan leadership) says about Dorje Shugden could be further from the truth. There is solid evidence to refute all of the CTA’s false accusations against Dorje Shugden, going back all the way to 1959 and beyond.
The 14th Dalai Lama’s Prominence and the Spread of Tibetan Buddhism
Dorje Shugden is a Dharma Protector of the Sakya and Gelug schools of Tibetan Buddhism and prior to the ban in 1996, he was worshipped by virtually all Gelug adherents. It was therefore natural for this Protector to be consulted, via an oracle, for key events ultimately leading to the Dalai Lama’s escape from Tibet in 1959.
In Tibetan Buddhism, it is standard monastic practice for a secretary to take notes of the utterances and advice of an oracle whilst he is in trance of a deity. The assistant then transliterates the oracle’s pronouncements and counsel, which is then checked and certified with the official oracular stamp. It is the same when the oracle of Dorje Shugden takes trance.
Uncovered notes from various consultations with the Panglung Oracle in the late 1950s reveal how Dorje Shugden saved the life of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. With this, Dorje Shugden’s advice effectively saved the Tibetan people’s culture, heritage and religion. This is a far cry from the Tibetan leadership’s assertions that Dorje Shugden wishes to harm the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people.
The 20th Century bore witness to a number of celebrities and public figures who commanded our attention – Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mao Zedong, Aung San Suu Kyi, Mother Teresa, Elvis Presley, Madonna, Princess Diana, Muhammad Ali, Pele, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Marilyn Monroe, and the Kennedys all stamped their marks on our minds, but no one charmed us as consistently and for such a prolonged period as His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
In the wake of the Tibetan diaspora and with the Dalai Lama as inspiration, Tibetan Buddhism gained adherents in Europe, the Americas and the rest of world. Tibetan Buddhist centres and groups sprouted everywhere and even as the Tibetan people struggled to regain their foothold in the global community, their religion which was once contained within the ice-capped mountains of the Himalayas took the world by storm, capturing the imagination of poets, thinkers, academics, spiritualists and activists alike.
Today the 14th Dalai Lama is an established institution and viewed as the single most important symbol of Buddhism. In the past 50 years, the Dalai Lama has developed a public persona akin to being the embodiment of all the best human qualities, rare and precious, in a world that is becoming increasingly degenerate and immoral.
Such is the Dalai Lama’s predominance as a Buddhist figure that most people in the world mistakenly regard him to be the Buddhist equivalent of the Catholic Pope or the absolute head of the Buddhist religion. But what is beyond mistake is that the 14th Dalai Lama became a living reminder in the collective consciousness of the world, of the Tibetan people’s plight and a powerful tribute to their struggle. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to imagine Tibetan Buddhism and the Tibetan struggle without him.
The story of the 14th Dalai Lama is an amazing one. Beginning in a small village in Taktser in the province of Amdo where the Tibetan God-King was born, the Dalai Lama burst sensationally into the public sphere when he escaped from Tibet in 1959. Accounts surrounding the Dalai Lama’s escape have become legendary and yet, until recently, very few knew enough to separate fact from fiction.
Events Leading to the Dalai Lama’s 1959 Escape
Lhamo Dhondup was only four years old when his childhood came to an abrupt end. Identified as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama, he was brought from his family home, a farmhouse in Taktser to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. There he was given a new name – Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso which means “Holy Lord, Gentle Glory, Compassionate, Defender of the Faith, Ocean of Wisdom”. His people sometimes referred to him as Yeshe Norbu (the Wish-fulfilling Gem) or Kundun but regardless of how he was named, the truth was that he was no longer an ordinary boy. He was now the 14th Dalai Lama, the human emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion.
When the Dalai Lama was 15 years old, the Chinese army stood poised on the Tibetan border. Civil war in China had seen to the rise of Mao’s Communist Party eager to assert Chinese suzerainty that had been left by the wayside during China’s internal power struggle. In October 1950, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) crossed over into Tibet and one year later, as Tibet’s sovereignty was dissolving, the Dalai Lama was hurriedly invested with full power as Tibet’s absolute ruler. The Tibetans needed a ruler and they needed him now, regardless of whether he was mature enough or sufficiently prepared to deal with complex statecraft.
As Mao’s army pushed towards Lhasa, the Dalai Lama’s government sent urgent pleas to the United Nations to intervene but no help came. Left without a choice, the Dalai Lama retreated to the Indian border to negotiate with China. In May 1951, the 17-Point Agreement was signed between China and Tibet whereupon Tibet surrendered its independence to China on terms that allowed Tibet to retain her autonomy.
The agreement between China and Tibet did not amount to peace between the two nations as the PLA increasingly sought to control various aspects of Tibetan life. Meanwhile, Tibetan resentment over the forced takeover of their homeland mounted. By 1957, it became clear that the 17-Point Agreement was not going to hold and sooner or later, the situation would break, placing the Dalai Lama’s life and the lives of the most important people around him, in danger.
And it is here that the wisdom and compassion of an ancient Tibetan Buddhist deity, Dorje Shugden, towards the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people became clear.
A Protector of the Yellow Hat Teachings
Tibetan Buddhism recognises 84,000 different methods that the Buddha used to communicate the Dharma. Within the Vajrayana tradition, it is the grandmasters who have shaped the way the Dharma is understood and absorbed. Considered to be enlightened beings themselves, these grandmasters or Mahasiddhas use their worldly lives and form to teach the Dharma based on what is most potent, given the conditions and circumstances of the time.
In the beginning of the 20th Century, the Tibetan Buddhist landscape was dominated by the Gelug school founded by Lama Tsongkhapa, which accounted for most of the Tibetan population. Within the Gelug school, the great Tagphu Pemavajra and Kyabje Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo were perfect embodiments of its founder’s teachings. From these two luminaries, the pure Gelug lineage flowed on to the next generation of lineage masters such as His Holiness Trijang Dorje Chang, His Holiness Ling Dorje Chang, His Holiness Zong Dorje Chang, His Eminence Domo Geshe Rinpoche and not to mention His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
All of these high lamas embraced Dorje Shugden as the most effective Dharma Protector of the time. They taught the practice to their thousands of students, along with the most treasured teachings of the Gelugpa school of Buddhism. In fact, the Dorje Shugden practice began in the 17th Century with the Great 5th Dalai Lama who wrote the first praise to the deity, made the very first statue of the Protector with his own hands, and established the first Protector chapel — Trode Khangsar in Lhasa, Tibet. Many incarnations later, the 11th Dalai Lama enthroned Dorje Shugden as the Protector of the ‘Yellow Hat Teachings’ (the Gelug School of Buddhism). The Great 13th Dalai Lama was also well-documented to have taken Dorje Shugden’s advice on how to stave off foreign threats to Tibet’s sovereignty, which existed even during his time.
Therefore it is no surprise that although there are a number of popular Dharma Protectors in the Gelug lineage – the powerful Pehar whom the Nechung oracle takes trance of, Palden Lhamo, Setrap and Tsangpa, to name but a few – the Protector Dorje Shugden would often be consulted on the most important issues relating to Tibet and the Dalai Lama.
Tibet Could Have Been Saved If the People Had Listened to Dorje Shugden
In the fifth volume of The Garland of Jewels: Chronicles of the Successive Emanations of Lord Lokeshvara, there is a passage that indisputably demonstrates how Dorje Shugden has been looking after the Tibetan nation for a long time. The passage reads,
“In the year of the wood dog (1932), in front of Dromo Geshe Rinpoche Ngawang Kalsang -who was a spiritual master in his own right; acknowledged as spiritual mentor by all inhabitants of outer Tibet; whose fame spreads from one direction to the other, Gyalchen Shugden, who is strictly committed to preserve Manjunath’s (Lama Tsongkhapa) legacy, entered his medium (the oracle of Domo Geshe Rinpoche’s monastery, Dunkar). He pronounced:
‘This is the time when Lower Hor rises. As remedial measure, it is vital to renovate the two stupas in the east and west of central Tibet immediately’.”
In essence, Dorje Shugden warned that because of the collective bad karma of the Tibetan nation, they were in danger of invasion from an external force. Dorje Shugden’s advice was quickly communicated to the 13th Dalai Lama who took the Protector’s warning to heart. In order to avoid this karma of the Tibetan nation from ripening, the 13th Dalai Lama renovated the Golden Mausoleum of Lama Tsongkhapa (the stupa in the East) and the Potala Palace (the stupa in the West). To finance these projects, a token tax was levied on every Tibetan and in that way, every single Tibetan came to be involved in the projects. It meant that the merits of renovating the two stupas could be attributed to every Tibetan and to the nation as a whole.
Thus, in spite of the Great 13th Dalai Lama’s general opposition to what he perceived as an over-reliance on oracles which he mistrusted, at the most crucial time and through his own attainments, he saw the wisdom in following the advice of Dorje Shugden. In this way, he averted tragedy to the nation of Tibet. This fact was confirmed by Tibetologist George D. Chryssides in his book, Exploring New Religions (pages 238 and 239).
It is only logical that if Dorje Shugden in his perfect clairvoyance could foresee a threat to Tibet during the time of the 13th Dalai Lama, the Protector would also be able to presage a threat during the reign of the 14th Dalai Lama. And this is precisely what took place in 1957, two years before the Dalai Lama was forced to flee Tibet.
In 1957, a few years after the 17-Point Agreement was signed with China and before Tibet was completely overrun by Mao’s forces, Dorje Shugden saw an opportunity to turn around Tibet’s waning fortunes. The Dalai Lama and both his senior and junior tutors were on a visit to India at the time when, through the 6th Panglung Oracle, Dorje Shugden advised:
“…if Tibet were to engage in a war with the Chinese forces at that time, then the ‘Tibet situation’ would be resolved.”
In retrospect, there was a lot of wisdom and logic in the Protector’s advice. The Dalai Lama and his tutors were safely away in India where they would be out of harm’s way had the Tibetans launched an attack on Chinese camps. That was probably the last opportunity the Dalai Lama had to travel freely out of Tibet.
As an enlightened Protector, Dorje Shugden is able to see beyond the mundane, and it may well be that an attack on the Chinese army would have demoralised the Chinese and dissuaded Mao’s forces from pushing further into the heart of the nation. However, Dorje Shugden’s advice was not heeded and the fact that the Tibetans did not launch an offensive, revealed to the Chinese army how easy it would be to take over all of Tibet.
Twice, the attack on Chinese forces as advised by Dorje Shugden was planned – the first on the 15th day of the 12th month, and the second on the 23rd day of the 12th month. However, on both occasions, excuses were made and Dorje Shugden’s advice was not followed. After the Tibetans failed a second time to launch an attack to save Tibet, the opportunity closed with the return of the Dalai Lama and his retinue to Tibet.
With the situation too risky for a third attempt, Dorje Shugden once again took trance of the Panglung Oracle to address the head of the Chushi Gangdruk (“Four Rivers Six Mountains”), the guerrilla army formed to protect the Dalai Lama and Tibet. Speaking with Andruk Gompo Tashi, Dorje Shugden said that the situation was now dire. Still, the Dharma Protector trusted by the greatest lamas of the time did not abandon the Tibetans to their own karma. Instead, Dorje Shugden began making provisions for what he could foresee would now be an eventuality.
Note:
Some people might wonder why a Buddha like Dorje Shugden would counsel violence and war instead of advocating peaceful means. It is important to understand that whilst the Protector does not favour aggression and brutality, it was already upon the Tibetan people brought about by their karma. A pre-emptive strike as advised by Dorje Shugden would have prevented the bloodshed, countless loss of lives and the destruction of many holy monasteries and sacred sites that ensued.
In the Bodhisattva Vows, we see that although harshness is to be avoided, a practitioner on the Bodhisattva path should not avoid whatever needs to be done for the greater good to be preserved. We see a similar notion in the story of the historical Buddha, who in one of his previous lives was a ship’s captain forced to take the life of a murderous bandit to save the rest of the passengers.
Dorje Shugden Made Preparations for the Dalai Lama’s Escape
In the dothey (or nyirtoe), which is a request for Dorje Shugden to manifest his enlightened activities to protect the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa, the Protector is asked to:
Be the war god in my protection; be my messenger and servant.
Be the fort of my protection; be the storekeeper of my people and possessions.
Be the day’s bodyguard; be the night’s watchman.
Be the cloak on my back; be my staff in the front.Be the bridge over water, and stairs on the rock.
Be those who see me off; be those welcoming me.
Raise me if I fall; if I forget, remind me.
Be the doctor when I fall sick; if poisoned, give me potent remedy.
This potent prayer was composed by His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, the Junior Tutor of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Similarly, the 14th Dalai Lama also composed a famous prayer to Dorje Shugden titled “Melody of the Unceasing Vajra“, wherein the power of the Protector is invoked to:
Increase Lozang the Victorious One’s Teachings
And the life span and activities of the Teachings’ upholders!
Further the happiness of beings in the Gaden [Podrang] dominion!
In short, in his prayer the Dalai Lama instructed Dorje Shugden to do whatever is necessary to spread Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings. According to the Dalai Lama’s request, Dorje Shugden should accomplish this by protecting the lives of those who are beacons of the lineage and the aspirations of the people of Tibet (‘Gaden Podrang dominion’).
Combining the verses in these two prayers, we can see that Dorje Shugden’s enlightened purpose is to protect the Gelugpa teachings, the lives of the teachings’ upholders and the hopes of the Tibetan people. And these three elements are all embodied in the 14th Dalai Lama, who had to be brought away from danger and into safety.
So, even as Tibetans continued to fail to follow the Dharma Protector’s advice, Dorje Shugden continued to prepare to save them from their own fate. In trance of the Panglung Oracle, Dorje Shugden ordered some Khampa warriors to search for a lake located south of Lhasa. It would be in the shape of Vajrayogini’s flaying knife and there, they should establish a base camp of warriors and wait for instructions. The camp came to be known as Lokha-Chaksta Drikung Thang.
Disbelieving of the future to come, the Khampa warriors were initially very slow to exert themselves. In response, Dorje Shugden took trance repeatedly to remind them to do it until he finally manifested wrath and insisted that they fulfil his instructions. Dorje Shugden then gave them a ceremonial sword that he had used in trance. Later, at the site that he chose, the Khampa warriors uncovered another sword much like that depicted in Manjushri’s iconography. Combined together, the crossed swords became the emblem of the Chushi Gangdruk. Over time, Dorje Shugden in trance sent more and more people to the Chushi Gangdruk camp until there were enough warriors to establish a full battalion.
The formation of Lokha-Chaksta Drikung Thang as instructed by Dorje Shugden was a critical juncture in the history of the Tibetan people. It made safe the eventual escape route that the Dalai Lama would take in 1959 on his way to exile in India. The formation of this guerrilla base camp also readied a battalion of warriors who would protect the Dalai Lama on this perilous journey, carrying on his shoulders the hopes of the Tibetan people.
Hence those who wrongly accuse Dorje Shugden of wishing to harm the Dalai Lama would be hard-pressed to explain why the Protector had ordered all these pre-emptive steps. Lokha-Chaksta Drikung Thang’s existence is proof of Dorje Shugden’s supreme clairvoyance and the Protector’s intention to secure the life of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as he had vowed to do so.
Dorje Shugden Rescues His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
Just as Dorje Shugden had portended, towards 1959 the situation became increasingly tense in Lhasa. For years before the Dalai Lama’s escape, Khampa guerrillas waged war against Chinese soldiers along the border and the Chinese became impatient. Soon, a plot to capture the Dalai Lama and influential officials of the Tibetan government was uncovered.
In his autobiography The Illusory Play, Trijang Dorje Chang wrote that he summoned the Panglung Oracle to his chambers and invoked Dorje Shugden to ask for the Protector’s advice. Dorje Shugden confirmed that the Chinese were ready to carry out their plans to get rid of the Dalai Lama.
This information was undoubtedly communicated to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who then ordered Trijang Rinpoche to seek further advice from Dorje Shugden. However, Trijang Rinpoche was fully aware that he was being watched and moreover, the Chinese had planted spies everywhere in Lhasa and within the Dalai Lama’s circle.
In his autobiography, Trijang Rinpoche then wrote,
“Following the intentions of the Dalai Lama, I secretly ordered Rato Chowar Rinpoche to go to the Panglung Ritroe to ask Gyalchen Dorje Shugden for his instructions.”
Trijang Rinpoche also sought the help of Sera Mey’s Abbot, Kensur Ngawang Dakpa Rinpoche, who enlisted the help of his changtso (assistant) Lobsang Yeshe. Together with Rato Chowar Rinpoche, the three monks were the conduits for Dorje Shugden to convey secret plans for the Dalai Lama’s escape to safety.
Just as Dorje Shugden had predicted, on 10th March 1959, a Chinese plot to capture the Dalai Lama, the abbots of the three great monasteries – Ganden, Sera and Drepung – and a number of influential Tibetan personages was uncovered. The plan was to invite the Dalai Lama and these officials to the Chinese army camp in Silimpok, whereupon they would be detained. However, when news broke out that the Dalai Lama’s life was in danger, thousands of Tibetans arrived from every direction and surrounded the Norbulingka (Summer Palace), where the Dalai Lama was, and prevented his departure. In this way, the plan to abduct him was foiled.

Interviews with various monks who served as the Dalai Lama’s bodyguard during his escape into exile, including Changtso Lobsang Yeshe who was instructed to seek advice from Dorje Shugden via the 6th Panglung Oracle. It was Changtso Lobsang Yeshe who attended the trance and asked Dorje Shugden if the Dalai Lama should leave or remain in Tibet, and if there was any danger to his life. Dorje Shugden told Changtso Lobsang Yeshe that His Holiness the Dalai Lama should leave immediately, and specified which route to take. It is thanks to this advice that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is alive today.
On 11th March 1959, six days before the Dalai Lama’s escape, the Panglung Oracle took trance of Dorje Shugden yet again. This time, Dorje Shugden informed Changtso Lobsang Yeshe that another Chinese plan had been set in motion to capture the Dalai Lama and that there was no time to waste. Specific instructions were given, with Dorje Shugden telling Changtso Lobsang Yeshe that the southern route was the only safe route for the Dalai Lama to take.
Because the Chinese army were on high alert for the Dalai Lama’s potential flight into exile, all exit routes and mountain passes out of Tibet were heavily guarded. Only the southern route remained relatively safe for His Holiness, because it was the site of Lokha-Chaksta Drikung Thang. This was Chushi Gangdruk’s base camp which Dorje Shugden had urged the guerrilla army to establish in that area just two years prior. Dorje Shugden had already foreseen that the Dalai Lama’s life would eventually be endangered, and had already taken steps to protect His Holiness.
In addition, Dorje Shugden told Changtso Lobsang Yeshe that he would ask the monks of Sera Mey’s Pomra Khangtsen to place their own lives in danger and escort the Dalai Lama to safety. Devoted to the Dalai Lama and to Dorje Shugden, 33 monks from Pomra Khangtsen volunteered for the sacred task.
Dorje Shugden gave each monk a handful of yellow blessed rice and assured them that they would be safe. Decades later, when the ban on Dorje Shugden was imposed, it would be the monks of Pomra Khangtsen who were hardest hit — expelled from Sera Mey Monastery with no choice but to form a new Dorje Shugden monastery, Serpom. Such was, and continues to be, their unwavering devotion to the Dharma Protector.
On 14th March 1959, three days before the Dalai Lama’s escape, Rato Chowar Rinpoche again sought an audience with Dorje Shugden. In trance of the Protector, the Panglung Oracle shot three arrows in the southern direction to again affirm that the Dalai Lama would be safe if he took the southern route out of Tibet. Dorje Shugden then bent a ceremonial sword and gave it to Rato Chowar Rinpoche, with the specific instruction that it should be carried by a Tibetan man bearing the name ‘Dorjee’ at the head of the escape party. Furthermore, before commencing their journey, Dorjee should wave the sword three times in the southern direction.
Changtso Lobsang Yeshe, who was present in the audience, witnessed all of this. Dorje Shugden also handed Changtso Lobsang Yeshe his ceremonial bracelet (pudri), to be given to the Sera Mey Abbot to ensure the safety of the Dalai Lama. The Protector also wrapped a handful of yellow blessed rice in the red silken cloth that he uses in trance, and told Changtso Lobsang Yeshe to burn the blessed rice along the way.
In parting, Dorje Shugden urgently counselled that the Dalai Lama should leave without delay and if his instructions were followed, the Protector would guarantee the safety of the Dalai Lama and his entourage.
There was little time to waste. A few days later, on the night of 17th March 1959, the Dalai Lama slipped out of Lhasa, disguised as a soldier. He left together with 37 people, including his tutors, family members, abbots, monks and ministers of Gaden Phodrang (the Tibetan government). They were guarded by monks from Sera Mey’s Pomra Khangtsen and warriors of the Chushi Gangdruk,
Two days later, on 19th March 1959, fighting broke out between the Chinese and the Tibetans. The Chinese army’s superior weaponry and training meant the poorly-equipped Tibetan revolt was ruthlessly and swiftly quashed. In a matter of days, the Dalai Lama’s palaces, the great monasteries and countless Tibetan houses were reduced to rubble. It would be another few days before the Chinese realised that the Dalai Lama had escaped. Had Dorje Shugden not advised the Dalai Lama to escape and provided the means for the passage, it is unlikely that the 14th Dalai Lama would be alive today.
The Dalai Lama travelled virtually the entire distance on a brown horse and oftentimes on foot. After crossing the Kyichu River, the escape party travelled along the Brahmaputra River for as far as it took them, and then trekked the Himalayan mountain trails. It was a difficult journey that almost killed the Dalai Lama as he endured storms, blizzards and long stretches without much rest. Along the way, the Dalai Lama and his retinue were beset by exhaustion, fever and disease.
Finally, on 31st March 1959, the Dalai Lama and his escape party crossed safely into India. It is where the Tibetan leadership and exile community have been based for the last 58 years, in 27 major settlements scattered throughout India that were granted to them on a 99-year lease by the government of Jawaharlal Nehru. In these settlements, Tibetans have had the opportunity to re-establish their monasteries, schools and way of life, to preserve as best as possible their culture, traditions and precious religion. All of this was made possible because His Holiness the Dalai Lama was able to escape, thanks to the guidance of Dorje Shugden.
Those on the same journey swear that along the way, they followed the instructions of Gyalchen Dorje Shugden to a tee, offered regular prayers and burnt the yellow rice that the Protector had given them. Countless eyewitness reports confirm that throughout the journey, a belt of clouds shielded the Dalai Lama’s escape party from Chinese surveillance airplanes. Just as the planes flew overhead looking for signs of the convoy contrasted against the pristine white snow, black clouds would form directly above the escape party to obscure them from view.
Years later, many of the Tibetans who escorted the Dalai Lama into exile would also recall that throughout the entire journey, the Dalai Lama carried a rolled-up thangka on his back. Presented to him by Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, the Dalai Lama did not part with the precious painting even for a moment. Later revealed to be a thangka of the King Protector Gyalchen Dorje Shugden, the sacred image that protected the Dalai Lama was later returned to Trijang Rinpoche, and it can now be found in Trijang Ladrang, South India.
Epilogue
It has been 58 years since His Holiness the Dalai Lama trusted Dorje Shugden with his life and made a perilous journey out of Tibet. The spread of the glorious Dharma in the past half century could not have happened without the 14th Dalai Lama. In turn, all this would not have been possible if Dorje Shugden had not secured the southern route that provided safe passage out of Tibet; if Dorje Shugden had not prepared the Chushi Gangdruk to be ready to escort the Dalai Lama to safety; if Dorje Shugden had not given very specific instructions to Changtso Lobsang Yeshe and Rato Chowar Rinpoche who facilitated the Dalai Lama’s escape.
Thus, it is both poignant and ironic that 37 years after Dorje Shugden saved His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and with him, the Tibetan Buddhist religion and the legacy of the Tibetan people, that the same Dharma Protector would be accused of wishing to harm the Dalai Lama and destroy the efforts of the Tibetan people to regain their homeland. If that were to be true, Dorje Shugden need not have helped the 13th Dalai Lama, let alone the 14th Dalai Lama, to avoid what would have been the single greatest tragedy to befall the nation and people of Tibet.
Today, on the 14th Dalai Lama’s official website and in the Dalai Lama’s autobiography, Freedom In Exile, the Dalai Lama credits the Nechung Oracle for having saved him. On the same official website, His Holiness the Dalai Lama dedicates a special section for Dorje Shugden, referring to the deity as a spirit whose practice should be banned because it harms the Buddhadharma.
The Dalai Lama’s government, today known as the Central Tibetan Administration, paints a false picture of Dorje Shugden as a vicious spirit that promotes sectarian cultism. And yet, as any visitor to a Shugden temple or monastery will attest to, the same centres also advocate the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa, which Dorje Shugden swore an oath to protect. And to this day, despite all that has been said against him by the very same people he did so much to help, Dorje Shugden continues to assist anyone who invokes his help in their Dharma practice. If something was ever going to be considered the mark of an enlightened mind that is free from ego and self-grasping, that would be it.
Below are translations of monastic notes confirming that Dorje Shugden foresaw that the Dalai Lama’s life would be in danger and that Tibet would be lost. As the notes show, Dorje Shugden had given advice that would have averted Tibet’s eventual loss but this advice was not heeded. Dorje Shugden in his clairvoyance then established the Chushi Gangdruk base camp in the south that enabled the Dalai Lama to flee to safety in 1959. The notes also show how Dorje Shugden gave precise instructions for the Dalai Lama to follow in his escape. All these notes were certified by Sera Mey Monastery, who today rejects Dorje Shugden.

With this, Dorje Shugden’s advice effectively saved the Tibetan people’s culture, heritage and religion. The Tibetan leadership said Dorje Shugden had jeopardised the efforts to regain their freedom from China. They claimed Dorjr Dhugden is an evil spirit that will harm Dalai Lama. All the accusations was not true. Dorje Shugden was made as scapegoat for their own agenda . There is solid evidence to refute all of the CTA’s false accusations against Dorje Shugden. Interesting read .
Thank you Rinpoche and Martin Chow for sharing this….the truth should be known to all.
If we believe HH the 14th Dalai Lama is the emanation of the Buddha of compassion Chenrezig, then how can Dorje Shugden which is said to be a spirit (which in actual is not) harm him. It doesn’t make sense that a Buddha can be harm by spirit. If it can then why are we taking refuge to the Buddha? For this excuse given by the Tibetan, leadership is really illogical totally put down Buddhism.
If Dorje Shugden is really an evil spirit why not just eliminate him by subduing him just like any other spirit that was subdued by the attained master. Isn’t this is better to get rid of the root cause of the issue than imposing the ban to create more suffering for the practitioners? The action taken by the Tibetan leadership is really irrational.
No leader would create suffering for their people especially in Tibetan case because Tibetan already lost their country and being refugees in India, why discriminate and separate their own people further? Isn’t that this ban just create more disharmony for their people? With this how can Tibetan be strong to fight for their right?
Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche had said very clearly Dorje Shugden is an emanation of Buddha Manjushri. Therefore, Dorje Shugden is an enlightened protector who we can rely on. Through his oracle, Dorje Shugden has helped many by giving very reliable advices.
Trijang Rinpoche was also not the only person who said the Dalai Lama was saved by Dorje Shugden. Zasep Rinpoche also gave the same account on how Dorje Shugden has saved the Dalai Lama in his biography. Dorje Shugden is definitely fulfilling his responsibility to protect Gelug teachings and to help practitioners to remove their obstacles.
Mantras are sacred verbalized words that invoke the protection and blessings of the deity to whom the mantra is ascribed. Mantras are also the manifestations of Buddhas in the form of ‘sounds’, hence the various mantras of Dorje Shugden contain the essence of the Protector.

Dear friends,
Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.
You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.
Enclosed are the prayers in English, Chinese and Tibetan.
May you be safe, protected and blessed.

Divination (‘mo’) Text by Dorje Shugden
This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.
The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

For the first time available, Dorje Shugden and his entourage of 32 asssistants of his mandala.
Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.
Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-
1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-
– Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
– Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
– Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
– Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
– Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.
2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.
3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokitesvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.
4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.
5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.
6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.
7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama
Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.
After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.
The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.
His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.
Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.
Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.
The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

“If the Dalai Lama, if His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by Dorje Shugden, then we might as well not practice Buddhism anymore. If His Holiness the Dalai Lama can have his life shortened by a so-called evil spirit, any evil spirit, then can he be Avalokiteshvara? So on one hand you say, we say, I say, everybody says, he is Avalokiteshvara; on the other hand you’re saying that he can be harmed by an evil spirit… Which one is it? Can he be harmed by an evil spirit or is he Avalokiteshvara? Do you think Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Tara all take refuge in something else to protect themselves from Dorje Shugden? How illogical is that? How illogical of people to say His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by an evil spirit, any evil spirit or “Dorje Shugden” evil spirit. How is that possible?” – Tsem Tulku Rinpoche

Antique Pelden Lhamo thangka with sacred Dorje Shugden at the bottom right. Can see Tsongkapa and Guru Rinpoche on the top also. Beautiful and holy.
What a wonderful article to understand more on the relationship between Dorje Shugden & H.H Dalai Lama. Thank you Rinpoche and Martin for such an informative article. Without this publication, I would have never know how important and how Dorje Shudgen saved the H.H Dalai Lama’s life.
Felt very sadthat for political gain, the CTA made false accusations of Dorje Shugden and the monks and lamas who practices Dorie Shugden , suffers. Pray all these discrimination ban on Dorje Shugden will be over soon.
Thank You Rinpoche and Martin for the great sharing. It makes me understand further how Dorje Shugden has helped the escape of H.H. 14th Dalai Lama in 1959 from Tibet. Dorje Shugden was untiresslessly giving advice to ensure the safety of H.H. Dalai Lama, even given up his blessed sword and ceremonial bracelet (pudri) as well as full hands of yellow rice with the red cloth to Changsto Lobsang Yeshe to ensure the safety of H.H.14th Dalai Lama. It showed that Dorje Shugden was willing to do anything to ensure the safety of H.H.14th Dalai Lama, and how much He has concern about the Holiness safety. He even excise the magic power to send a cloth to prevent the Chinese plane spot the troops.
I was amazed by how precious Dorje Shugden instruction to set up a troop 2 years before the exile to prepare the escape of Holiness from Tibet. I would like to bow down to trust my Guru and Protector Dorje Shugden and listen all their guidance to me in future.
Thank you Rinpoche and Martin for sharing this ,The history keep a good record to show how Dorje Shugden help the HH Dalai Lama to escaped tibet with the miracle. Dorje Shugden is an enlightened being is not a demon, Dorje Shugden will protect , help and will do no harm to people.?
Thanks for the good sharing. A story tell the power of the Dorje Shugden is how powerful and determine to help H.H. Dalai Lama to escape from Tibet to India. The protector foresee the issue and needed help during that time. Even though the H.H. Dalai Lama escape from Tibet. But, he reach the Dharma far more to the world also. So as the Tibetan culture can be preserved in India too.
Amazing stories about HH Dalai Lama and his escaped from Tibet to India during 1959, without the enlightened dharma protector like Dorje Shugden we can’t imagine how the whole condition will be for Tibet government in excile and the Tibetan Buddhism? I felt like to spread more about this real story to as many people as possible, all will have more trust and faith with Dorje Shugden, even practice dharma strongly. Thank you for the powerful writing and may the ban of Dorje Shugden will be lifted very soon.
A very inspiring true story that give all Dorje Shugden practicetioner very strong faith in how powerful and compassionate Dorje Shugden is. Thanks Martin for this wonderful article!Wish Rinpoche long life and keep turning the Wheel of Dharma
It’s well known that Himalaya mountain is one of the toughest mountain to conquer. If it’s not the guidance from Dorje Shutdown, how could His Holiness Dalai Lama escape from Tibet? After reading this article, my faith in Dorje Shugden has increased even more. Thanks to the writer for his hard work. Long life His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche, Long Life His Holiness Dalai Lama!
Dorje Shugden has saved 14th Dalai Lama’s life. Hope that Dalai Lama will officially announce the lift of the DS ban soonest.

Thank you Martin and Rinpoche, for this verification and affirmation that Dorje Shugden, indeed will aid the sincere practitioner. Most informative and thorough in your presentation of the facts surrounding the issue of His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama’s refutation of Dorje Shugden. It is most apparent according to eye witness accounts, written documentation and very propitiation of the Dharma Protector by His Holiness, that Dorje Shugden has been beneficial and helpful, serving to protect and preserve the teachings of Lama Je Tsongkhapa and foresee a long and healthy life for His Holiness. May we see an end to the ban which is obviously false and damaging to any and all practitioners, regardless as to what school or sect, compassion and wisdom will hopefully prevail, as I have tremendous faith in both Dorje Shugden and His Holiness to bring about the conditions conducive to unite both sides effected by the issue of the discriminatory ban that continues to be divisive. May this world know peace and see the example of truth embodied by Buddha, represented by His Holiness.
A true democracy allows everyone the freedom to exercise their human rights, including the freedom to practise any religion they want. In democratic countries, the government does not interfere with this right. Neither are democratic governments prejudiced against their citizens’ choice of religious belief. They do not force people to stop their religious practice or pass legislation criminalising people because of their religion.
The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), the Tibetan leadership who are based in Dharamsala are the exception. They are the only so-called ‘democratic’ leadership that puts a stranglehold on its people, persecuting them for their religious beliefs. They deny the rights of Dorje Shugden practitioners for simply practicing their religion as they have done for the past 400 years. Dorje Shugden practitioners are ostracised from their own community, denied medical care, education or even employment in government offices. The CTA definitely does not live up to the right to be called a democratic administration, especially when in it inflicts suppression of people’s freedom and disrespects basic human rights.

Will the CTA (Tibetan govt in exile) and their supporters in East and West say voodoo is evil and cannot be practiced too? Will they advise against Voodoo and say its a demon’s practice and people who practice are bad too? Truth be told, no one has the right to say anything about anyone’s religion. Listen to what this man says in the short snagged clip because he speaks well and with the truth.

Thank you for the sharing. The history keep a good record to show how Dorje Shugden help the HH Dalai Lama without fail. Once again it proved that those statements to say that practiced Dorje Shugden practice will shorten HH Dalai Lama ‘s life is not true.
May the ban be lifted up soon.

Thank you Rinpoche and Martin Chow on this informative write up. After reading this article it really do not make much sense why His Holiness the Dalai Lama want to put a ban on Dorje Shigden practice if is not because of Dorje Shugden His Holiness would live until today and continue to turn the wheel of Dharma and be benefited to million of sentient beings, hence is really illogical about this ban.
Very inspiring article of how powerful and accurate Dorje Shugden has showed the safe route to save the life of HH Dalai Lama .It was through trance of oracle of Dorje Shugden ‘s advice. Dalai Lama, has crossed the border into India on foot from the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, over the Himalayan mountains. What exactly happened leading to the escape should be recorded as history. If not because Dorje Shugden , Dalai Lama would not be spreading Buddhism as what he is now. Evidence from this article has proven the power of Dorje Shugden and he is not a evil spirit as claimed . Dorje Shugden is an enlightened being and will protect , help and will do no harm to all sentient beings. May the ban of Dorje Shugden will be lifted soon.
Thank you Rinpoche and Martin for this wonderful article. The truth should be disclosed.
H.H. Dalai Lama acknowledged the effort of Assam Riffles, the team who have escorted Him out of safety to India.
How about Dorje Shugden? The truth is, Dorje Shugden has saved His Holiness’s life! youtu.be/vbaOOH7ZrGI via @YouTube
The first reasons given for imposing the ban on the practice of Dorje Shugdeen were:a)the practice endangers the life of the Dalai Lama, and b)it jeopardizes the chances of Tibet gaining its independence from China. This post clearly shows us how these two reasons are null and void by virtue of the great love and devotion of Dorje Shugden and Shugden practitioners for the Dalai Lama and their sincere and determined efforts to protect the security and future of Tibet as embodied by the continued safety and well being of its spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
From this post, we learn how Dorje Shugden had first strenuously tried to save Tibet with a powerful strategy and course of action, which was conveyed through the oracle. However, these instructions were not carried out and the window of opportunity disappeared.
Undaunted, Dorje Shugden then moved to ensure the safety of the Dalai Lama, who held the future of Tibet and Tibetans in his hands. So Dorje Shugden urged the Dalai Lama to escape immediately and gave a route of escape to follow. Over and above this, Dorje Shugden formed the band of warriors to protect and defend the Dalai Lama during his escape. -the Chushi Gangdruk . This band was formed way before the Great Escape of the 14th Dalai Lama from Tibet, China to India in 1959.
All of this has documented evidence to support it. By far the most moving part of this article is where the monks, who had risked their lives to protect and help the Dalai Lama in his escape ,heard him say(with shocked disbelief registered on their faces and tears in their eyes as they recalled it) that it was Nechung who was his savior ! Later, more heartwrenching news came -they were told to give up their practice of Dorje Shugden or face being expelled from their monasteries, ostracised and discriminated against!
Ultimately, in protecting the Dalai Lama, Dorje Shugden was protecting the Dharma of Je Tsongkhapa for this degenerate age, the Dharma for which he had arisen as an uncommon Dharma Protector to protect.
Such is the power and compassion of Dorje Shugden.
Thank you Rinpoche and Martin for this most powerful article that clearly refutes all the illogical naysayers against the practice of Dorje Shugden.
There are many sources that explained clearly the role of Dorje Shugden in helping the 14th Dalai Lama to find a new home in India. Malevolent spirits will not help Chenrezig to ripen more sentient beings or help the buddha dharma to spread. The influence of Dalai Lama can be seen via the number of attendees to his teachings, the number of books he has published and so forth.
Tibetan Buddhism would have a very different presentation and a more subdued stance if the Dalai Lama was not part of such a landcscape.
Thank you Rinpoche and Martin for sharing the truth about who saved the 14th Dalai Lama.
From the article, we can see that Dorje Shugden has done so much for Dalai Lama and the Tibetan. Dorje Shugden has given advices to save the fate of the Tibetan but Dorje Shugden advices were not followed. And when all the advices were not carry out accordingly, Dorje Shugden has alternative plan and prepare for Dalai Lama’s escape to India. If Dorje Shugden is an evil spirit and want to end the life of Dalai Lama, why want to do so much so help the Dalai Lama escape? Without the help of Dorje Shugden, Dalai Lama could have been captured by the Chinese.
It is very important for more people to know the truth and do not follow the ban. May the ban be lifted for all to practice their religion freely.
Thank you Rinpoche and Martin for presenting one of the world’s most significant society exodus in modern times in a very factual and evidence laced narration.
It is completely baffling as to how HHDL can be harmed through practicing Dorje Shugden who is clearly and proven beyond doubt a fully enlightened Buddha can harm His Holiness’ life. Millions, if not billions mantras (holy and powerful words of the Buddhas) have been chanted and HHDL recently mentioned that he’s in great health (over age 80). Very amazing and contradictory.
Entering the 22nd year of the illogical ban on Dorje Shugden practice, we see zero benefit of the ban. However, on the contrary, the ban has created rifts (perhaps some are beyond repair) amongst many communities that if the ban is not lifted, the rifts will be so permanent and “sealed in stone” that the karma created will drift a lot of people deeper into samsara.
One of the two primary and early accusations by the Tibetan leadership, siding and buttressing His Holiness’ pronouncements regarding Dorje Shugden and its practitioners, was that this Protector practice endangers the life of their beloved Tibetan god-king, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.
But alas here we have more than 20 years later, a statement just made by His Holiness stating that he is in “perfect health”.

So factually and millions and millions of Dorje Shugden mantras later, only one of them, either the Tibetan leadership or His Holiness can be right.
Who is it to be?
Thank you Martin for sharing the inspiring article that shows the enlightened skill and great wisdom of Dorje Shugden when Dorje Shugden strategized and gave the accurate escape route through the trance of oracle, in order to save the life of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and to protect the entire Tibetan tradition, culture and most importantly, the precious Tibetan Buddhism, which its root can be traced all the way back to Buddha Shakyamuni.
After the Tibetans had failed to follow the instructions given by Dorje Shugden for two times, which required the Tibetans to launch attacks on Chinese forces as being planned during that time, Dorje Shugden had never given up and further gave the accurate direction for His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to escape from the invasion of Chinese army in 1959. Owing to the enlightened qualities of Dorje Shugden, the escape route heading to the southern direction was being planned ahead precisely by accumulating more and more people at Chushi Gangdruk camp until a full battalion was formed with the sufficient warriors so that the southern route would be safe during the entire escape plan. This recorded history with true facts can be served as important reminder for all the practitioners that Dorje Shugden is a highly enlightened and skillful Dharma Protector who can help all of us to clear the obstacles and practice the Buddhadharma smoothly with the peace of mind.
As Dorje Shugden has helped to save His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama’s life, high ranking Tibetan officials and many high Lamas during the Chinese army invasion in 1959, it is truly unfair for Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) to proclaim to the Tibetans and the global devotees of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama that Dorje Shugden is a spirit with the accusation of by practicing Dorje Shugden, it can endanger the life of Dalai Lama and cause the Tibetans for not able to regain their freedom from China. The great compassion and love for Tibet and Tibetans shown by Dorje Shugden through His clairvoyance and enlightened miraculous skills, are contradicting to the accusations made by CTA.
The history and purpose of Dorje Shugden arisen as an enlightened Dharma Protector is to safeguard the Lama Tsongkhapa’s precious teaching on Nagarjuna’s Middle View as well as protect Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings during the current degenerate age. Dorje Shugden is the emanation of Manjushri Buddha who grants wisdom and protection to the practitioners so that the obstacles can be cleared and at the same time and conducive conditions can be provided to the practitioners in order to learn and practice the Buddhadharma smoothly.
May the ban of Dorje Shugden will be lifted soonest possible for the growth of Buddhadharma and end the sufferings endured by many Shugden’s practitioners.
Humbly with folded hands,
kin hoe
This excerpt of the Swiss Television documentary presented in 1988 is a painful reminder of the hypocrisy and the sad reality of the oppression, discrimination, and ostracisation of Dorje Shugden practitioners. For 20 years, Dorje Shugden practitioners have endured this and no one supported their fight as the Tibetan leadership in exile continues to undermine their effort by denying the existence of this ban, and silencing their voice by peer pressure, flooding the media and fooling the general public with accusations that Shugden practitioners are political tools supported by the Chinese government to create discord within the Tibetan community. Please listen to their plea and please share this video far and wide to end this injustice.

History itself teaches us valuable lessons be it as a whole or individual. Had the advice given by Dorje Shugden being excuted earlier, the history will change but then what can it be? We can only learn from day to day and to those who holds position in the government should do their best, at least for the benefit of the people as whole.
For me, I was touched by the monks who spoke of the escape and especially the monk who was tearful in the video. They have been accused for harming H.H. The Dalai Lama, even after risking their own to save His Holiness’s life. Later on, one only can imagine what they have gone through for being scrutinised and placed under the watchful eyes of their own people for practising Dorje Shugden and for telling the truth. For this, I felt immense sadness as what ‘s in samsara other than sufferings itself. Like Rinpoche has said, there’s nothing glory in samsara, not even having fame, position , money and etc.
I hope many will realise the truth after reading this article.
Thank you Martin for the article. It is fascinating how Tibetans infuse spirituality into their government affairs by consulting the oracle in trance for important matters such as HH the Dalai Lama and the country. However, I also realised how selective they are when following advice given by Dorje Shugden via the proctector. They choose to focus on their fears and limited wisdom than follow Dorje Shugden’s advice to strike agains the Chinese army in order to protect Tibet.
Unfortunately for Tibetans, they lost their country as a result. I believe this is also a result of the collective negative karma of Tibetans. Although there are so much historical facts and people who are still alive who escaped with HH the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan leaders have the audacity to lie that Nechung helped them escape Tibet.
When more people read about these historical accounts, they will begin to question the govt’s hidden political agenda and lose faith and confidence in them.
Thanks Martin for drawing out the crucial points of the events that led up to the escape of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the safety of the beacons of the lineage and the aspirations of the people of Tibet.
Knowing that Tibetans could have been saved by Dorje Shugden but because of their very relaxed attitude, the warnings from the protector were not heeded and instructions not followed. Tibetans should by right be very ashamed of this tragedy instead of blaming Dorje Shugden. It just goes to show sorry to say, how lazy and corrupt minded the Tibetans are and how it must be their negative karma ripening that prevented them from receiving good advice from the protector. It also makes me furious because so much help was given to these people and that not only did they take the protector’s advice to save their country for granted, now they twist it around to blame and condemn Dorje Shugden.
This is the kind of attitude we are dealing with, and it gives very little hope that they will ever change. This is what’s going to create more negative karma whereby they will eventually lose even their identity because of so much disunity created by the Tibetan leadership. I think it is time for the people to stand and speak up and expose the corrupt. The Tibetan leadership should apologise to Dorje Shugden and all practitioners for years of persecution, suffering, pain, losses the Central Tibetan Administration has caused them. Very sad and very ungrateful.
Dorje Shugden continues to assist anyone who invokes his help in their Dharma practice. Therefore not surprise that Dorje Shugden saved the HH Dalai Lama. And the evidence provided in this article strongly supported this. The HH Dalai Lama has spread Buddhism widely to the world and because of him Dorje Shugden become popular. This is good because Dorje Shugden is our time of protector, powerful and fast to help us in our Dharma practice. I believe that the HH Dalai Lama and Dorje Shugden are in the same mindstream., both are working together for Dharma to grow in the Dharma degenerate time. Thank you Martin for sharing this article in order for the world to know the truth.
This is the great article show enlighten protector like Dorje Shugden does exist in this modern age. It better people have faith and trust all the way and never have doubt whatever happen. It took century for tibetan to realise how compassion Dorje Shugden ready are. Whatever he get abondan or accusing as evil spirit. Dorje Shugden still helping to save tibet and tibetan. It move me a lot how kind Dorje Shugden are and gain faith to do his practice.
This write up of what happened prior to 1959 and during the escape of the 14th Dalai Lama shows the enlightened nature of Dorje Shugden. Even though he advised ways to prevent the loss of the country, the advise was not followed and even later Dorje Shugden had to use wrathful ways to safeguard the escape of the Dalai Lama in the future. This shows the clairvoyance of Dorje Shugden and that he will never do anything harmful as he is a Buddha in nature.
Yet, now Tibetan Buddhism has spread all over the world and we are very fortunate to learn about the powerful practices. Everyone can request Dorje Shugden for help, the main part is to request from the heart and if our request is beneficial to us, we will receive help, not necessary according to our plan but for sure for our greater benefit. Here is a prayer which everyone is allowed to do: A short prayer to Dorje Shugden https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/a-short-prayer-to-dorje-shugden.html
May we always be close to Dorje Shugden.
To be very honest, at that point of time, choosing to leave Tibet to run across to another country does take a lot of courage, mostly, people will choose a place to hide in their homeland, by hoping the war will end soon and they can return home, but leaving the country means they have to start everything all over again in a foreign land. Hence for Dalai Lama to follow the prophecy of Dorje Shugden, beside having courage, it also take great faith in order to follow the instruction.
From this, we can clearly sees that how accurate Dorje Shugden’s prophecy is that resulted in the Buddhist world today, if it’s not because of Dalai Lama’s spreading of Dharma, Buddhism will not be what it is today, so widely spread. And if it is not because of Dalai Lama, Dorje Shugden will not be a popular today.
That’s why I always believe that Dalai Lama and Dorje Shugden are in the same mindstream, they are working together to make Dharma grow stronger and bigger in the world, but due to the degenerate age, they have to use the unconventional way to promote the Dharma.
Terrified experience during the escape. The journey was harsh yet safe. Those who left with HHDL settled down in India due to the kindness of the president of India. From India many high lamas stretched their wings and started teachings in the west. Hence spread the Vajrayana Buddhism to the west today.
If Tibetan is grateful to HHDL who being the hero for all Tibetan, escaped from China, protecting his people, preserving the Dharma, saving thousands of Tibetans lives etc, then HHDL and the Tibetan should also be grateful to Dorje Shugden, due to all the effort and help during the time of escaping from Tibet. HHDL and all the high lamas and tulkus won’t be able to make it to India. Dorje Shugden has been a great protector to the Tibetans for the last many hundred years. He is there for the benefit of Tibet and HHDL. Hence today’s Dorje Shugden ban just to show the world that how ungrateful Tibetan is to Dorje Shugden. How can you practice compassion but abandoning someone who’d helped you unconditionally.
Dorje Shugden is truly a Buddha. He is so compassionate that although the Tibetan didn’t follow all his instruction, he still arrange the Chushi Gangdruk to protect The Dalai Lama so that he was not harmed along the way to Dharamsala. Yet, today CTA accuses Dorje Shugden is a spirit.
It is ours and the Tibetan Buddhism faith also, if that time The Dalai Lama didn’t flee to India, Tibetan Buddhism wouldn’t be spread to every corner of the world, as Tibetan Buddhism used to be a close practice. And partially because of that also, now Dorje Shugden is widely spread in China. more and more people are benefited by practicing Dorje Shugden. ??
I wonder if it was faith by the advisors and staff of HH 14th Dalai Lama in Dorje Shugden’s prophecy or it was out of sheer desperation that they follow the instructions. I think it was the latter because if it was out of faith then they would have seriously done what Dorje Shugden asked them to do prior to 1959.
These are not just stories told at camp fires or by story tellers, these narrations are backed with written accounts and evidences.
Tibetan Buddhism is alive and growing today thanks to the prophecy and protection of Dorje Shugden and the tireless dharma work of HHDL across the globe. If Tibet had remained as it was and HHDL had not left Tibet, Tibetan Buddhism might not have been so popular as it is now in many countries around the world. This is the main work of Dorje Shugden, to protect the dharma teachings of Je Tsongkhapa. And in doing so, saved the life of HHDL.
Interesting article to read. The story has been simplified and in detailed, on how and who helps the Dalai Lama escape from Tibet to India.
I like the part when Dalai Lama on his journey escape to India, miracle events such as cloud appeared to shield eyesight from China surveillance airplanes. This proof the power and abilities of the Dharma protector Dorje Shugden that help and make their journey safe and obstacles free. The Dalai Lama was so blessed and protected to have DS thangka on his back throughout the journey.
Therefore, without the protection of Dorje Shugden that aid the escape, until today His Holiness will not be able spread Dharma worldwide. Thank you Martin and Rinpoche for sharing this article.
This article gave a clear picture of how compassionate Dorje Shugden is to continuously help His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetans. With Dorje Shugden clairvoyance, numerous advices had been given but due to some of the Tibetan that not trusted Dorje Shugden it has not been follow and resulted the lost of Tibet but at very least at the very desperate moment they still followed and managed to escape for India. This should be a great lesson and to prove that Dorje Shugden is a trust worthy enlightened protector. Many people have been blurred or misguided by the Tibetan leadership to discriminate Dorje Shugden as spirits without checking the background and the history.
The truth can never be untruth and thanks to Martin for this article to give the evidence of how Dorje Shugden has been the one that always there for His Holiness and the Tibetans.
I especially love this post! It shows many evidences of how Dorje Shugden is a Buddha who is so compassionate and clairvoyant. The pitiful part is when Dorje Shugden gave so many advice and yet they choose to ignore it. The bright side is how even though Tibet is lost, HHDL and Tibetan Buddhism spread across the world and many people benefit from it.
With so many witnesses and proof, HHDL and the CTA should really stop ‘defaming’ Dorje Shugden. Twenty years of wrong accusations even though His pure intentions was to protect the Tibetans, the Dharma and the pure Gelug lineage. Even till today, His intentions are still pure and beneficial (https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/the-farm-of-your-mind.html).
There were no trust on Dorje Shugden basically and that is the downfall of Tibet basically. We can talk about the collective bad karmas but the monks didn’t follow fully to the instructions given by Dorje Shugden MANY times. I felt there was no trust from the monks to Dorje Shugden that led to they became desperate to finally heed the advice given for fearing of losing the Dalai Lama. God knows what would they have prevented had they listened to the Protector whom Trijang Rinpoche advised!
Nevertheless, Buddhism spreaded far and wide to other continents and even jokers like me are connected with Buddhism, talking about the effects of Tibet being over taken by China. I am not saying the violences are good but Tibetan Buddhism wouldn’t have reached to me and other people especially in the West had China not invaded Tibet and monks left Tibet to India.
Very enlightening indeed. A Thrilling experience
From this article, I have learned that H.H Dalai Lama have been helped by Dorje Shugden to escape to India heavily and skillfully.
The escape was planned 2 years before the Chinese Troop invaded Tibet! First with the established of Lokha-Chaksta Drikung Thang, a base camp name Chushi Gangdruk based south of Lhasa by Khampa warriors and eventually other warriors is form. This camp have secure the south of Lhasa route , if not Dalai Lama have no way to escape as the whole Tibet route is heavily guarded by the Chinese.
In addition, Dorje Shugden told Changtso Lobsang Yeshe that he would ask the monks of Sera Mey’s Pomra Khangtsen to place their own lives in danger and escort the Dalai Lama to safety. In here, I think the reasons that Dorje Shugden selected these monks from Sera Mey, because they are the hard-core devotees to Dorje Shugden. Thus, we read in the following where these monks follow exactly what have Dorje Shugden asked to do and they do it daily. And later on when the ban of Dorje Shugden was imposed, they do not abandon Dorje Shugden but established another temple- Serpom to pray to Dorje Shugden. From here, I learned to trust in Dorje Shugden fully, no matter what happened, Dorje Shugden will guide us to pass our obstacles. And when we trust in Dorje Shugden fully, it is easier for us to help in dharma because Dorje Shugden will also trust us that we could perform our job well.
“On the night of 17th March 1959, the Dalai Lama slipped out of Lhasa, disguised as a soldier guarded by 33 monks from Sera Mey’s Pomra Khangtsen and warriors of the Chushi Gangdruk left together with 37 people to India. The Dalai Lama travelled virtually the entire distance on a brown horse and oftentimes on foot. After crossing the Kyichu River, the escape party travelled along the Brahmaputra River for as far as it took them, and then trekked the Himalayan mountain trails”. Imagine 37 people and travel on horses; without protection from Dorje Shugden it is very easy to trace these group of peoples. The big troop and the colors of the horses is contrast to the snowy environment, and at the same time the Chinese took plane to fly over the area trying to locate them but failed. Logically saying, how can this be? Thus, without protection from Dorje Shugden, this troop can’t be success. In today’s world, to cross over Himalayan mountain is still a challenge, don’t mentioned the troop left Tibet in hurried and without much advance equipment as today. How could they survive in such a harsh environment!
It is very convenient to blame self-failure to a Buddha so that there is no responsible taken. I think in this world, the only leaders openly blame the political failure onto a Buddha. If Dorje Shugden wanted to harm the Tibetans and Dalai Lama, Dorje Shugden will not help so much involve in depth to help Dalai Lama and Tibetan cross to India. It is so illogical!
In addition, Dorje Shugden is propitiate by many highly attain masters for decades how could Dorje Shugden cause harm to any lama, and, not to forget Dorje Shugden himself is also a Lama.
When history is recalled, it is by far very much into the past. Of such recollection it may well be difficult to counter any falsification of facts. However in the instance of Tibet and China, it was only happened 58 years ago and there are living individuals that can attest and prove the truth.
For as long as 20 years, the Tibetan leaders in exile (CTA) had been giving false historical accounts of Protector Dorje Shugden, as to how Dorje Shugden harms the Dalai Lama and the cause for the loss of Tibet to China.
Having collected evidence as contained in this article, it is my hope that the practice of altering history to suit political agenda of CTA be eradicated and the truth of the true happenings with the escape to safety of the Dalai Lama is known to all.
With deepest appreciation to H.E the 25th Tsem Rinpoche and Martin Chow for telling the truth and exposing the false accusations against Dorje Shugden.
When anyone in the West speaks about Tibet, naturally “Shangri-La” comes to mind. Often, China has been accused harshly in invading Tibet ruthlessly without basis but from this article, it clearly states that actually the Tibetan government has signed over Tibet during the 17th point agreement with China in 1951. This was the point that struck me the most when we were discussing on this article earlier.
If only the Tibetans listened to Dorje Shugden and strengthen their army, the country would not have been so easily invaded by the Chinese. This makes a lot of sense. Even though China has a bigger pool of army and resources BUT Tibet terrain was not an easy environment to adapt to for the Chinese with the bitter cold weather and high altitude, they would have been defeated just based on this. Just like how Napolean was defeated in Moscow who lost close to 300k soldiers as the French were not use to the cold bitter winter of Russia.
At this juncture, I do hope the Tibetans especially more the government officials repent and realised their long history of mistakes…the tide can still turn if they change their methods for the bigger picture in preserving the dharma
This is indeed an interesting article about who saved the Dalai Lama. It was Trijang Rinpoche and also Dorje Shugden who saved the 14th Dalai Lama when he left Tibet to India. Dorje Shugden took trance and gave advice on what to do and which route to take so that Dalai Lama will be save from harm. So, it is illogical for Dalai Lama to put a ban on Dorje Shugden.
Thank you Martin for this wonderful article. Now we have proof that it was Dorje Shugden who saved the 14th Dalai Lama. Dorje Shugden is an enlightened being and His purpose is to protect Dharma and Dharma practitioners. If He wanted to harm His Holiness, He could have done it at that time, He could have given wrong instructions to His Holiness and caused His Holiness to die, but He didn’t. Therefore, there is no reason Dorje Shugden wants to harm His Holiness.
Many evidences have been given to prove Dorje Shugden has been wrongly accused for the crimes He did not commit. CTA must remove the ban on Dorje Shugden, the ban has caused more damages to the Tibetan community in exile than benefits. The only person who benefitted from the ban is CTA, they successfully distract people’s attention away from their failure to give the best to their people and failure in getting their country back.
Dear Martin,
This is a great write up which has a lot of epic, plot, truth, evidence and proof of Dorje Shugden giving advice via oracle trying to save Tibet and H.H 14th Dalai Lama to leave Tibet. It is sad that Nechung takes the credit for being the saviour of H.H 14th Dalai Lama instead of Dorje Shugden. Few other great Dalai Lama and H.H 14th Dalai Lama himself also wrote prayer to Dorje Shugden and also carried a beautiful Dorje Shugden Thangka for protection on horseback during his escape from Tibet. Hope H.H 14th Dalai Lama would admit this one day and be grateful to Dorje Shugden for saving his life. Thank you very much Rinpoche and Martin for highlighting this truthful event.? . Hope to read more great materials from you again Martin. Do keep up with your all time great works??
