The earthquake was centered 69 miles (111 km) north of the Thai town of Chiang Rai.
One lady has died so far, when a brick wall collapsed on her…
I hope we can get information as time goes on what is happening. Again our prayers go out to the earthquake hit area…

6.8-magnitude quake strikes NE Myanmar; 1 dead
YANGON, Myanmar – A powerful earthquake struck northeastern Myanmar on Thursday night, killing one woman and shaking buildings as far away as Bangkok. No tsunami was generated.
The quake hit in an area where Myanmar, Thailand and Laos meet, about 70 miles (110 kilometers) from Chiang Rai. The northern Thai city sustained minor damage, according to Thai television.
A woman in an area north of Chiang Rai, just two miles (four kilometers) from the border, died when a brick wall collapsed on her, according to police Capt. Weerapon Samranjai.
“It was like somebody was running on the roof. Everybody was in a panic. They came out of their houses and wondered what happened,” said Maj. Gen. Mongkol Sampawapon, a police chief from another district near Chiang Rai.
There were no immediate reports of damage from the Myanmar side, a remote area where communications, even in the best of times, are difficult. The country’s military-controlled government also tightly controls information.
The 6.8-magnitude quake was just six miles (10 kilometers) deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. At that strength and depth, it said 600,000 people could feel shaking anywhere from strong to violent. It added that since buildings in the area are considered vulnerable, moderate to very heavy damage could be expected.
Buildings swayed in Bangkok, about 480 miles (770 kilometers) south of the epicenter.
Max Jones, an Australian resident of the Thai capital, was in his 27th-floor apartment when his building started shaking so hard he had to grab the walls to keep from falling.
“It was bloody scary, I can tell you,” he said. Jones said he could see people running in the streets.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake was located too far inland to create a destructive wave.

A very powerful 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck north-eastern Myanmar back in 2011. Wow so powerful that the tremors of which were felt in parts of the northeast, as far as in Thailand. The quake struck near Myanmar’s borders with Thailand and Laos. However, no tsunami was reported. At that strength and depth, it said thousands of people could feel shaking anywhere from strong to violent. It was felt hundreds of miles away in the Thai capital Bangkok and Vietnamese capital Hanoi as well. Buildings swayed in Bangkok, so could imagine what had happened in Myanmar, As reported one dead so far. Due to the government policies very little information were shared to the outside world. Any way an earthquake is indeed scary.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
Earthquake is a terrifying phenomenon of Earth. It shows the frailty of humans against nature. It is a tremendous occurrence that certainly shocks everyone, badly damaged dozens of ancient temples in the old city of Bagan.
I think, Myanmar was very lucky to save more life than lost of remarkable buildings and landmarks of the city.
Thank you for the sharing the earthquake hit Myanmar.

Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for this post on the Myanmar earthquake. I understand that to date about 70 or more people have reportedly been killed in this earthquake. A lot of old buildings, including old temples have been destroyed.
While we fold our hands in prayer for the victims of the quake, this disaster, coming in the wake of the greater disaster of the Japan earthquake and tsunami, and occurring in an area with little known history of earthquakes, makes us more aware that causes and conditions are now coming together rapidly for collective negative karma to manifest more and more.
It makes us feel the urgency of Dharma work and practice, and of using our precious optimum human rebirth meaningfully and well.
Looks like our World runs short of shocking phenomena to exite its population. First, on 12 March,2011, not too long ago, A-deadly 8.9 magnitude earthquake devastated Kesennuma city of Japan, which triggered off terrible Tsunamis, sweeping the shores of northern Japan, leaving tens of thousands dead. Other tsunamis also hit Hawaii, with warnings blanketing Pacific areas as far south America, Canada, and US west coastal regions, according to broadcasting news. Less than 2 weeks later, on 25 Mar.2011, another earthquake, measuring 6.8 magnitude strikes Myanmar, with total number of causalities still unknown. Only consulation, was that the quake was located too far inland to create a destructive wave, according to Pacific Tsunami warning centre. Perhaps, Yangon, Myanmar is truly a pure Buddhist Nation to be able to escape its onslaught, or is it because our World has’nt paid off enough of the effects of its unvirtuous causes yet! OM MANI PADMI HUM.
Lucky not many were killed during this earthquake. OM MAHA YAKCHA TSA SOHA. May those who are injured be saved by Lord Setrap Chen. I noticed that there has been a lot of earthquakes happening recently. I keep track of them via a website. The link is : http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/. At the time of writing, two more earthquakes happened in the past hour.
I hope that less earthquakes will happen.
OM MANI PADME HUNG.
