7 Signs Your Dog Is In Pain And Trying To Hide It
Dear friends around the world,
It is very important to take good care of our pets because keeping a pet is equivalent to taking care of a child. Once we have decided to take care of them, it is our responsibility to make sure they are healthy and treated well.
For modern-day people, due to their working schedules, most of their pets are left alone at home. Therefore, when they are sick, it’s very hard for the pet owners to realise. No matter how busy we are, we must always take good care of our pets because they are living beings, they too feel love, loneliness, pain and so on.
I hope more pet owners who come across this article will start putting more attention onto their pets. May all the animals be well-taken care of and may they not need to suffer anymore.

7 Signs Your Dog Is In Pain And Trying To Hide It
International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management has deemed September Animal Pain Awareness Month. With the campaign slogan, “Their Pain Is Our Pain” vets are hoping to spread awareness about how our pets let us know they are in pain. When it comes to dogs, pain can be hard to detect. For dog’s wolf ancestors, showing signs of weakness made a wolf vulnerable, and being vulnerable was dangerous. Therefore, it’s in a dog’s nature to not purposefully reveal when they are feeling hurt, sick, or injured. Which is why it’s important for dog owners to be on the look out, and recognize the signs that signifies their dog is in pain.

Thank you Rinpoche, for this important knowledge what to look for signs that our doggie in pain. By knowing what to do and look out for, it will certainly help owners to detect the situation. When we spend time with them we could understand them better when they are in pain. Since they are not able to tell us we have the responsibility to take care of them. Pain can be difficult to detect in older dogs. Doggie in pain tend to be more vocal, it’s not always easy to spot immediately. They will only express in a number of ways such as whining, whimpering, growling, and so forth. It is important for dog owners to recognize subtle signs of pain in their dog. Hence reading this post have help me to observe my doggie better.
Pets improves their owners health from dogs to cats, horses to fish, pets come in all shapes and sizes. A number of people have many pets, others have only a few, while some choose to not have any. Having pets and taking care of them can sometimes be a tremendous amount of work, but the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. When pets are properly taken care of they provide unconditional love and support to their owners. Living with pets improves their owners health and happiness too. Owners also have important role to know those signs their pet in pain/ill where they can immediately take action.
I have 2 dogs at home, and each time if they just lying down to welcome you home, you know they are not feeling well or might be unhappy. Animal can’t speak but if you care enough, you will notice their different from as usual and you need to take some action to comfort therm.
I hope people with animal friends around them can put more efforts for the well-being of their friends.
As they are a small part of us, but you’re the whole world for them.
Honestly, the dogs in my hometown are rescued. Some of the signs above does matches especially when we first rescued the dog back home, the dog went to a corner to hide and was very timid. The dog was even scared to come out to have food although she was hungry and if she was not feeling too well she wouldn’t even want to move around. I guess that if anyone wants a pet, they really have to put in all the effort, love and care for the animal. Otherwise, better don’t think of having a pet or else the pet will suffer in the end.
Animals are just like humans, be them dogs, cats, or even bigger animals like lions, bears, even elephants. They have feelings, they can fall sick too like human. Their behavior may be different from human, due to their born nature and the particular genes in their species, but from head to toe, they are made of every blood, flesh, vessels and nerve. Whatever we human can feel, they feel it too. But, they can’t talk. Just like human, when our body fall sick or some body part mulfunction, our body will show sign. So, being animals who can’t talk, we need to learn all these signs from their body, so that we can take very good care of animals. This article is very good, it provide informations that we didn’t know about dogs. Whether we keep a dog at home or not, it’s good to know all these.
It’s so sad when you are in pain and you can’t do anything nor speak up as an animal. They suffer silently and I dare not even imagine the discomfort they have to go through eve try waking minute. Even as human, I find it hard to tolerate pain especially when I am having a migraine. We have a dog and it pains us when we see him being unusually quiet and inactive. We know for sure he is not well and trying to rest and recuperate. Whatever it is, we must pay close attention and make sure they get the proper medical attention. We cannot take for granted as their life is as precious as ours.
It’s really difficult for us as humans to understand animal sufferings because they don’t speak our language and another point, was we don’t pay attention to their needs. Animals are just like us that needed love, care, attention and educated, like a child. Some people may think taking care of an animal is time consuming but in my opinion, to take care and educate it is a very good practice of nurturing patience, perseverance, compassion and even change a person perception.
Just like humans, animals do have anxiety, fear, depression aside from physical signs that they are not well. Most times, those ‘owners’ of ‘pets’ rarely notice the symptoms until at a later stage when the sickness is at an advanced stage. I think people who have animals as their friend, companion, family are more observant because they spend more time with the animals. Hence the animals may be medically treated at an earlier time than other animals whose owners say they are busy with everything else in life except finding time for their pets.
I have 3 dogs in my house and yes I can tell when they are not feeling well. Notably is when they don’t have appetite. It’s ironic when they take their best way possible to express their problem to us humans knowing fully well we don’t understand their language.
Dog can’t tell us how they feel in our language but they can express in their own way if we willing to learn and understand. When we have them as our pets, it’s important to understand them. They will give us sign on what and how they feel. Dog will also learn and understand our feeling and what we trying to express. Sometime our interaction exclusive with only both of us will understand. It doesn’t matter as long as we care for them. Dog can be very loyal and they only afraid when we betray them because once we dump them they have no one to turn to and not easy for them to trust others when they being hurt. It’s important when we take them with us and care for them. It’s a commitment as we are dealing with living being that depend and count on us. I believe we don’t want to be abandon and so to them.
Dogs make the most lovable, loving and loyal of pets. WE should take care of them as we would our own child. Pets, like all living beings, feel love, loneliness and pain .If we have adopted a pet, we should take good care of them and take full responsibility for their health and well-being.
It is not in a dog’s nature to purposely reveal that they are not feeling well, or are hurt or injured. Hence, we should keep a sharp look out for the following tell-tale signs.
Keep a look out for when your pet limps or hobbles or favours one leg over the other; when he looks unusually lethargic or sapped of energy; when he suddenly loses his appetite for food;when his eyes are bloodshot, or dilated ; when he suddenly becomes snappy or defensive; when he pants a lot or his breath is shallow; or when he hunches over, is fidgety or suddenly becomes rigid.
In short, be mindful all the time how your dog is behaving and walking and breathing. Examine him carefully if you have a hunch something is wrong.
Keep the pet happy and let him keep you happy too!
This is a very useful list now that we have a new family member in the form of a furry canine. We have to be watchful and sensitive towards our pet’s behavior because it cannot tell us when it is in pain or feeling uncomfortable. Thank you, Rinpoche for this article.
Thank you very much to Rinpoche, for giving us more tools and methods to check if our dogs and possibly pets are in distress. It is difficult to realise dogs are sick or in pain as they are not able to tell us verbally. So it is our responsibility to be aware and care enough to look out for them.
Thank you very much to Rinpoche, for giving us more tools and methods to check if our dogs and possibly pets are in distress. We all need to know for certain that our pets are not in pain.
This is great sharing. My dogs has gone through some of the symptoms described and I can say that their demeanor changed the moment the problem is taken care of.
If we spend enough time with our dogs, we get to know their habits and normal behavior. So, we are in a better position to notice any change in them.
They also like the attention and love we give them when we spend time with them. That’s why we have them as pets – we want their company and unconditional love too.
So, bottom line is to spend time with and to get to know our dogs.
Thank you Rinpoche for this post.
It is definitely very useful to be aware of these signs and its significance especially since our furry friends are not able to communicate their pain to us plainly. By knowing what to generally look out for, it will certainly allow us to detect the situation early and attend to it accordingly.
It is difficult to realise dogs are sick or in pain as they are not able to tell us verbally. So it is our responsibility to be aware and care enough to look out for them. Thank you Rinpoche for this really helpful article on the 7 signs to look for. After reading, I have noticed that my dog had actually squinted her eyes a couple of times previously. Will definitely keep a closer eye on her if I see her eyes squinting again.
Rinpoche’s care and compassion always extends beyond humankind to animals and others.
Thank you Rinpoche.
People who are thinking of owning pets should read the ins and outs about owning them beforehand. It is important of having a fundamental knowledge of the needs of the animals that they are about to bring home, be it a dog, a fish or a bird. It is the owner’s responsibility to get to know them earlier and be ready to commit themselves on the tasks and work that will come with owning them. Do not bring them home and regret later.
Thank you Rinpoche for the article it helps me to observe mumus and take care them better.. This is very important to remember that they can’t always cry out to us when in need. Dogs aren’t humans so they don’t can’t talk. The best thing we can do to keep them comfortable is to learn. Dogs display their pain in certain actions and behaviors that may seem subtle to us. Not everyone is a canine behavioral expert but these 7 symptoms will help us determine whether or not your loved one is in pain. we must learn to take away their pain always nobody like pain..
Dear Rinpoche
Thank you for sharing this interesting article.
Its very helpful for me as recently i help to look after my daughter;s pet dog (a poodle and shih tzu) mixed.Ever since i have been looking after the pet dog i begin to love her as if she is part of our family.
At least i could look up if she is in pain or not well.
Thanks again for sharing so more dog owner will gain more awareness for their pets.
Dogs are one of the most loyal and lovable companions anyone could ever have, sometimes even way better than human companions. Dogs can’t talk and communicate with us, therefore it is very important to always keep a lookout of their condition so when the necessary actions can be taken when we detected there’s something wrong with our dogs.
I have always been a dog lover ever since young, I used to live with my grandmother and uncle, we had a shih tzu and a schaunzer. Later they were given away because my uncle could no longer take care of them. Ever since then I have always wanted to adopt a dog but it was never allowed by my parents. I didn’t know much then, but I’ve come to realise that keeping a dog or any pet is not just a matter of hobby or whatsoever, the ‘hobby’ comes with great amount of responsibility.
After my hamster died about 3-4 years ago, I have realised that keeping a pet is no playing matter, they are sentient beings too. I was upset when he died but I was even more upset with myself that I did not take good care of him.
Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for such informative article.
It is definitely a good to know for all dog owners. The same can almost be translated for other pets.
Thank you.
Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for posting this article… For all pets owner must be responsible ..
Pets can’t speak.. we need more time to observe and more care with them..
Then we will know what’s happening on them…
If have time have meal with them together… we will know know more..
Be a responsible pet lover…. give more time accompany them…
All the best…
This is a very helpful article for me and I will can use it in the present and future for all my dog companions and pets. This is also very interesting for me because there are so many indicators of dogs showing discomfort that it could change their vibe almost. I find this really cool because they can speak to show it but they will anyways.
It is like humans actually, if we are in pain and not wanting to directly show it, we will fall under certain traits. We will have a attitude change and we will act differently. We are all living animals and we are not that different anyways as you can see.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article, I found it very interesting and useful. Also I found it thought-provoking.
It is really important for dog owners to be aware of these signs as dogs are just like us and can feel pain. Can we bear any pain? No, that is the same for any other animals alike, they are living beings and thus have a mind which is able to feel pain, love, hate ETC ETC….
Remember, always take care of your pets as you would a child as humans and animals are equal.
Seeing these indications, reminding me dogs is just like baby, who cannot talk to communicate their pain or feeling; so we adult and pet owner has to be alert and observant while taking care of them. Thanks Rinpoche for sharing, it’s helpful 🙂
Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for posting this article, it is really helpful and informative that can benefit both the owner and their pet.
The owner- so that they can better care for their friend.
And the pet- so that they can be better understood and cared for. 🙂
I hope that many dog owners will see this and gain more awareness for their pets, so that their lives will become more compassionate and mindful. Thank you for posting this article to create the possibilities for these sentient beings. 🙂
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the above tips above.
It is really useful for dog owners to know about these signs because though the signs shown by the dogs may seem like nothing is wrong, it could be much more worse than it looks.
We are usually busy with our daily lives, with work and tc that we sometimes are too busy to notice these small signs, this article is very informative in spreading awareness to dog owners who may not know of this.
Understanding these signs that our dog might be in pain is relateble to humans, when we are sick we lose our appetite, we feel weak and etc.
It is said that, “All living beings are spiritual in essence. They are conscious with their feelings and alive in their hearts like every human being does, especially for the pet-owners, when they find their pets are sicked, injured, harmed or in great pain.” Thank you deeply Rinpoche, for your kind thought and compassion to awaken all pet-owners with this valuable and considerate article to lessen the sufferings and pains of all their pets, including the owners, before any unexpected bad happenings should arise, as I believe, “any pets’pain should also be the owners’pain too!”
Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for sharing this great informative article that will come in very useful for pet owners.
Is a inspiring article for those dog owners.Nowadays , people are busy with their daily life(family, work, children), the dogs or puppy might be ignored or abandon. Most of them treat the dogs as a “house security guard” so there is no fair treatment same as human beings.Actually , I am the one in this category but after I joined Kechara, I changed my attitude towards animals especially dogs and birds.
I feel sympathy on stray dogs and will try to give foods to them. I hope Rinpoche’s article will inspire more pets or dog owner more awareness on their pets or dog daily life, please treat same as your family members.
Thanks Rinpoche for sharing .
With folded hands,
Jason
