Colorado Doctor Finds Way To Treat Common Vertigo
AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) – More than seven million people in the U.S. suffer from vertigo with 50,000 in the Denver area alone. The symptoms include feeling surroundings spinning when nothing is moving.
Now there’s a new do-it-yourself way to treat the most common form of vertigo. CBS4 Health Specialist Kathy Walsh met the doctor who discovered the maneuver. Dr. Carol Foster is at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Foster’s recently published research is a breakthrough in the treatment of vertigo and could be life-changing for people who are disabled at times by extreme dizzy spells.
“You’re rolling over in bed and suddenly you’re hit with this incredible spinning and you see the room going around like you’re in the inside of a washing machine,” Foster said.
Foster has experienced the most common form called positional vertigo. It happens when particles in the ear that sense gravity get dislodged and end up in spinning sensors.
“It can make people have falls, they can be unable to go to work because they’re so dizzy, they can be vomiting,” Foster said. “So it’s very, very unpleasant.”
Foster is director of the Balance Laboratory at the CU School of Medicine. One morning, in treating herself, she came up with her own spin on how to fix vertigo at home. It’s called the “Half Somersault Maneuver.” Patients put their head upside down like they are going to do a somersault. They wait for dizziness to end then raise their head to back level. They then wait again for dizziness to end and then sit back quickly.
“And that causes the particles to leave the semicircular canal,” Foster said.
A six-month study showed patients preferred the exercise over the one commonly used by doctors.
“I was surprised at how well it worked,” Foster said.
Foster has posted the breakthrough on the Internet.
“My goal in life is to basically get rid of all dizziness on the planet Earth,” she said.
She’s on her way — one half somersault at a time.
People liked the half somersault because they weren’t as dizzy and had fewer side effects. None of those patients returned to the doctor for dizziness treatments.

I had never experienced vertigo before and wouldn’t be able to relate how it feels. The closest probably when I was drunk many many years ago. I kind of agree with one of the ways where those days I was told that it will feel better after doing hand stand. I was told by doing hand stand by the way, can help us to a healthier life. Apparently it helps with the blood flow.
May medical laboratory scientist finds cure for vertigo attack in near future so that it could ease patient’s suffering. Nevertheless, i think there is no harm trying self-care or do-it-yourself way. You will never know unless you try.
It’s just inspiring to know that there are individuals who live & work hard to help people who’re suffering instead being like many other individuals who live just to gain benefits for oneself regardless of the negative consequences created with his/her actions.
I didn’t feel any vertigo before, but I heard a lot about vertigo from my friends and TV. Some of my friends have it. All the while I heard that vertigo has no cure, it’s amazing that now Dr. Carol Foster had discovered a way to reduce it. Although they are still finding a way to cure vertigo, but this method is enough to relief vertigo patient’s suffering. It definitely can benefit many vertigo patients including my friend 🙂
I am not sure if the dizziness that I feel sometimes is vertigo or not but for sure I have motion sickness. I guess I will try the technique taught in this article if the next time I feel dizzy again. Thank you Rinpoche for writing this article.
It is amusing to know sickness like vertigo have no medical cure for it. In fact with little exercise as treatment to this ailment is a lot worthwhile and encouraging. Living in this modern society, we are very prone to medicine to cure illness and exercises are far away from reaching. Hectic, heavy lifestyle may lead to chronic disease and I believe this symptom is part of developing vertigo.
Cultivating into exercises and changing our lifestyle will help heal our body physically and mentally. Therefore, is a good info for many of us who don’t really know of vertigo and remedy to overcome this ailments.
There are a number of different causes of vertigo. Vertigo can be defined based upon whether the cause is peripheral or central. Central causes of vertigo arise in the brain or spinal cord while peripheral vertigo is due to a problem within the inner ear. The inner ear can become inflamed because of illness, or small crystals or stones found normally within the inner ear can become displaced and cause irritation to the small hair cells within the semicircular canals, leading to vertigo. This is known as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
Meniere’s disease, vertigo associated with hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ear), is caused by fluid buildup within the inner ear; the cause of this fluid accumulation is unknown. Head injuries may lead to damage to the inner ear and be a cause of vertigo. Infrequently, strokes affecting certain areas of the brain, multiple sclerosis, or tumors may lead to an onset of vertigo. Some patients with a type of migraine headache called basilar artery migrainemay develop vertigo as a symptom.
Head injuries may increase the risk of developing vertigo, as can different medications, including some antiseizure medications, blood pressuremedications, antidepressants, and even aspirin. Anything that may increase your risk of stroke (high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and smoking) may also increase your risk of developing vertigo. For some people, drinking alcohol can cause vertigo.
Medications may provide some relief, but are not recommended for long-term use. The technic that recommended on this article is worth to try. Due to no medicine needed no side effects it’s great to try this work out.
Many years ago, I had a very bad vertigo attack. I suffered the dizziness for about two weeks. I couldn’t eat, couldn’t sit upright and all I did was sleep, 20 hours a day. Went to see doctor three times but it didn’t help, and the last one was a TCM doctor who knew what I was suffering the moment he did a check on me. It was really a painful experience as I didn’t know what was wrong with me and I didn’t even think of going to the hospital as I thought it will heal and go away after some time. But I was very wrong. At least now I know what it is and there is this method which may help.
From the video, it’s great that the doctor shared the method as we can also recommend it to people who suffer from it.
Vertigo is a medical condition where a person feels as if they or the objects around them are moving when they are not. I have seen cases whereby the patients often feels like a spinning or swaying movement. Thats is bad enough to cause patients with nausea, vomiting, sweating, and having difficulties walking. Vertigo is commonly caused by a problem with the way balance works in the inner ear with a build up of fluid and changing pressure in the ear. Vertigo gets better in most cases without treatment. We can now treat common vertigo with this unique method by Dr. Carol Foster . Well hopefully this home method will help more people to tackle common vertigo. A vertigo attack can last from a few seconds to hours and if it takes longer and more worse, patients need to seek medical advice .
Thank you Rinpoche sharing this post.
