Can you believe what happened to this monk?
Dear students and friends,
Such disappointing news to share… a 66 year-old Thai Buddhist monk named Weera “Tony” Chulsuwan almost died due to a robbery last month. He was dragged from his home and beaten with a steel pipe and log chain by two teenagers, a 14 and 15-year-old, who police are still looking for.
Tony was beaten so badly that he passed out for 24 hours before he regained consciousness to call for help. Fortunately he is alive, received medical treatment and is now back to taking care of his rescued animals.
Do watch the video that reports about the incident… It is nice to see how well-loved this Buddhist monk is in his neighborhood… you can tell by how fondly his neighbor talks about him, and even stepped up to care for Tony’s rescued animals while he was recovering in the hospital. They themselves are puzzled as to why the teenagers picked him to rob, as he has barely enough to get by. Tony makes $350 a month, and whatever little he has, he uses it for his rescued animals.
On the day of the attack, he had already not eaten for the last few days. When he told his attackers that, they taunted him asking if he wanted money so that he could eat. How cruel.
I hope that Tony will recover soon and be well… It truly is disappointing that people can be so cruel… beating up a monk and running away not knowing if he will die due to the assault.
There has been a fund set up for Tony, do click on it if you can help: http://www.gofundme.com/4f14j0. The site updated that so far, a well drilling company in Spencer, Oklahoma has donated their services to drill a water well for Tony! This will help both him and his animals a lot.

SPENCER, Okla. — A secluded farm in Spencer seems like a quiet place to raise animals but Friday afternoon, that peace and quiet was shattered.
Police say just after noon Friday, two suspects robbed an elderly man after pulling him outside his home and beating him senseless with a pipe.
The homeowner lay unconscious on his porch for almost 24 hours. Officers say he finally woke up around 2:30 Saturday afternoon and dragged himself inside to call 911.
“He really doesn`t even have anything to steal. I`m just in shock that this happened,” says neighbor Joel Ortiz.
Joel Ortiz knows his neighbor as ‘Tony’, saying he is a devout Buddhist monk and a good friend. He was horrified when he found out what happened.
“I did peek in the ambulance as they were fixing to leave. I didn’t know it was even going on until I saw the ambulance and stuff here,” says Ortiz. “Black eyes, all his teeth knocked out, beaten badly.”
Neighbors describe Tony as someone who uses the little he has to take care of his rescue animals. Joel is doing what he can to take care of them while Tony recovering but he’s worried about the long-term care of the animals, especially the horses.
Tony could have trouble paying his medical bills – according to neighbors, he only makes $350 a month.
“As hard as his struggle is for somebody to come in and just take complete advantage of him when he doesn’t really have anything to take anyway,” says Ortiz. “And he`s the type of person if they would have asked, he would have just gave it to them. They didn’t have to beat him up like that for it.”

Reading this post , feeling sad what the two teenagers had done to the monk named Tony. The monk was beaten in the robbery and left for dead, could not imagine how the teenagers felt so cruel. Pulling him outside his home and beating him senseless ,leaving the monk with black eyes, all his teeth knocked out, and unconscious. Tony had not eaten for days when he was attacked. Tony earned little and whatever little he has, he uses it for his rescued animals .Having trouble paying his medical bills a fund was set up, a well drilling company in Spencer, Oklahoma is kind enough to help him. Even though it’s a old post I do hope he is continue with his work taking care of those rescued animals.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this post.
Heartbreaking reading this old post , such an ugly incident where two teenage boys robbed a compassionate Buddhist monk. Not only that they even beat this poor monk and leave him to die. Sad with our society nowadays where kids are brought up the wrong way. As parents its very important to bring up good kids and teach them the correct way to act, live and so on. Never harm anyone even animals . Teaching them to respect all especially it’s a monk who have been taking care of stray dogs. This monk is so caring, compassionate yet giving so much love to those animal were robbed and beaten.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
It is heartbreaking to learn about the senseless teenagers attacking a monk. More ever he is an animal rescuer. Those two teenagers ought to be caught and taught a lesson. If they are not taught well they can become unruly adults.
How can the two teenagers of all robbed a old Buddhist monk who has nothing.? Could imagine that situation, this poor old monk suffered in the hands of these naughter young teenagers. He was dragged, beaten and left to death. This compassionate monk is just a monk who lives simple to take care of those rescue animals ….horses, dogs, sheeps ,ponies and chickens. He is already short of funds to fed those animals yet he was robbed.
May this monk had a speedy recorvery to continue taking care of those animals and with donations pouring to help him.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.

Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing. Hope the monk has fully recovered from his injuries and his animals have been taking care of.
The 2 teenagers really do not know what they are getting into. Beating up an elderly, taunting him…and most importantly… he is a Buddhist monk.
I pray that the 2 teens karma when ripened will not be too harsh on them…
Always respect monks when they feed animals.. instead of themselves… their compassion and love are immeasurable….true embodiment of the Dharma…and Buddhist practitioners.
Dear Rinpoche,
it really sad, just take on.
Not everything is in our hand.
I wonder if this is all a prank by the kids. Or just kids who think because they can do it to someone, that is probably the case when they believe that their actions have no consequences. No one wants to experience to be beaten into pulp. May the monk recover the soonest and the animals have him back to look after them. And may the youths realise that the energy we create, no matter how big or small will come back to us.
Who would do this????? This is so cruel and he had no food and they beat him and taunted him. Karma will get them back and it will be painful.
So sad to hear what the 2 teenagers had done. It is news (actions) like this that instil the notion that the world is a dangerous place and people are evil by nature. The positive side of it is now Tony’s plight had “made” headlines and hopefully it will turn for the better.
I sincerely hope the monk will swiftly recover from his injuries and the animals will taken care whatever needed.
Thanks.
Such negative karma generated from robbing and seriously harming this poor 66years old monk, leaving him for dead, by two 14 and 15 year old boys will result in human suffering and also lower rebirth for them in their next life in accordance with Lord Buddha’s saying, “Even by creating small non-virtues, great suffering arises in future lives, as great destruction is caused a small drop of poison in your system”. Karma is certain and the creator of both good and bad, happiness and suffering. In our cyclic existence, negative karma should always be avoided at all cost! Nevertheless, those who are able, please help this poor old monk as appealed!!!
This is extremely disheartening. Why must people be so cruel to someone so virtuos. This shows how unfair the world is and the main reason why society slowly crumbles to fear. I hope that the teens are caught and dealt with appropriately. If not, their negative karma WILL catch up to them.
I really do not understand, why would people rob the elderlies? I not saying robbing the youngsters is a right thing to do but why would you do this to a poor helpless old man? People are so reckless nowadays…
Every time when I read about news of this nature, I had the tendency of taking side and condemn the attacker. Not that I support the actions of violence. After I watched this cartoon https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/the-story-of-buddha-in-cartoon.html and was also mentioned in Day13 of “Liberation in the palm of your hand” on how an Arhat like Maudgyalyayana life ended. It’s my perceptions that when we practice virtue no harm or bad incidence should happen to us.What I seldom remember is that in the past, I too could had performed many heinous crimes that could lead to some black karma ripening in this life….
Oh my god!!! That is so cruel!!!
How is it that all the people today are so bad!!!
Why did those kids have to be so mean?
The monks was already poor enough.
And when the kids attacked the monk , the karma they get is the same as killing the Buddha.
I pray that the monk will have a speedy recovery.
The Wheel of Sharp Weapons
45) When no matter how well-meant our actions towards others,
They always elicit a hostile response,
This is the wheel of sharp weapons returning
Full circle upon us from wrongs we have done.
Till now we have repaid loving-kindness with malice;
Hereafter let’s always accept others’ favours
Both graciously and with most humble respect.
Just can’t imagine that the 2 teenagers can be so cruel to rob and beat up this old monk named Tony who has hardly got anything except the rescued animals with him.
This monk really has a heart of gold, with that little bit of money he makes $350 a month he spent almost all for his rescued animals, i am very touched by his compassion for other living beings! May Tony will recover speedily and completely and so as helps, donations and funds will reach him soonest possible. Also thanks to Tony’s neighbor who came to help while he was in hospital.
It is just so senseless n cruel to do what the teenages had done to Tony. I shudder to think what they will be doing as they grow older if they are not caught n given proper guidance. May Tony be blessed wt swift recovery n continue benefitting others as he has with the animals he saved. May he receive more help from others to care for those rescued.
Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing.May Tony Chulsuwan quickly recover from his injuries. It is really unthinkable how anyone would like to hurt others in such a manner. When a person is kind and well mannered,it is not right to use him to vent out their frustration or ill intention towards him.We should only treat him with admiration and respect as has such qualities that is difficult to find in todays society.
We hope the animals in his shelter could get help soon,at least until dear Tony could get back to the farm ,when he recovers.
It’s almost unimaginable.. Every victim would be terrible, especially in that cruel and sadistic way they did it, but a Buddhist monk of all the people on this globe?? How ignorant do you have to be to do such a thing?? It’s horrifying when beginning to equate the width of the karmic repercussions.. *shudders* I wish this monk a speedy recovery and that at least this incident can bring attention to his economical needs!
Truly terrible, those 2 kids have no idea what they’re getting themselves into. I pray the monk will recover soon.
