Just a few days ago, His Holiness the Dalai Lama made a stunning announcement that has shocked many people. On 25th April 2018, the Dalai Lama said that he knows from “reliable sources” that the 11th Panchen Lama candidate he recognised, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, is alive and well. He also said that the 11th Panchen Lama who was recognised by China, Gyaincain Norbu, is being educated by a good teacher AND that it is possible for two incarnations of a being to exist at the same time.

What is interesting about this is that for 22 years, the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) in Dharamsala have maintained that the Chinese-recognised Panchen Lama is fake. In all capacities, they have always criticised him and put him and any news about him down. Now the Dalai Lama has made a 180 degree U-turn on this and is saying that both his candidate AND China’s could be real.

I have always believed that multiple emanations are possible, especially for someone of the Panchen Lama’s attainments. However my beliefs have been criticised because they were perceived as support for the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama. Online, I have been called “Chinese dog”, “traitor” and other vulgarities just because of my beliefs.

But my beliefs are not arbitrary and without basis. There are some practices, within the Yamantaka tradition for example, where astral travel is possible. A practitioner can eject their mind from their body, occupy the body of another being, go some place else then return to their original body at a later time, provided their original body has not been tampered with. This was useful for meditators staying in remote places — they could eject their mind from their bodies, occupy that of a passing bird (for example), go somewhere far away to receive teachings then return to their original body later.

So if astral travel in this way is possible for an “ordinary” practitioner with no special rank or title, surely it must be possible for a lama of the Panchen Lama’s attainments to have more than one manifestation existing at the same time but in different places? To say that it is not possible, is to limit the power of the enlightened mind to just one body. I am reminded of the 10th Panchen Lama who was in a teaching once and he started laughing for no apparent reason. There was no joke being made and so no reason for him to be so amused. When his students questioned him, he said, “Oh, one of my emanations is somewhere else and doing something funny.

In 2011, H.H. Gaden Trisur Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche, the 101st throneholder of the Gelugpa lineage, met with the Chinese-based Panchen Lama in Tibet.

In 2011, H.H. Gaden Tripa Lungrik Namgyal Rinpoche, the 101st throneholder of the Gelugpa lineage, met with the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama in Tibet. He already knew back then this Panchen Lama is someone worthy of homage and respect. After all Gaden Tripa is the supreme head of the Gelugpa school of Buddhism.

Now the Dalai Lama has stated that he also believes multiple incarnations of one mind is possible, and His Holiness has also endorsed the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama’s education (even praising it). One cannot help but wonder if the Dalai Lama will also be called the same names that I was because he endorsed the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama? Or are my views now okay because the Dalai Lama also believes in the same thing? I am not asking for anyone to call the Dalai Lama any names. I am just asking everyone to look at the hypocrisy and double standards of Tibetan society, that it is wrong for anyone to hold a belief that runs contrary to the Dalai Lama’s, even if that belief may be logical, and that person will be deserving of all kinds of abuse and violence. But once the Dalai Lama believes the same thing, suddenly that belief is okay.

That alone should tell you volumes about how Tibetan society behaves. Something is good when the Dalai Lama approves of it, otherwise it remains very bad. Is that what a democracy is, that something is acceptable as long as it meets the approval of a singular person?

For me, I am not interested in politics. I am only interested in preserving the Buddhist teachings and practices, and so what is ultimately important is whether the person is a good monk or not, and not what title or rank they have. So have they received the practice themselves in the proper, traditional manner and do they hold their vows and commitments? If both these questions can be answered with “yes”, then whether someone is the Panchen Lama or not, they are still qualified to give teachings and transmit practices. There are many lamas who are not of the Panchen Lama’s rank. They are just ordinary lamas and geshes but are still perfectly capable and qualified to transmit teachings and confer practices. So what if the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama is the real Panchen Lama or not? If he has the proper training and he holds his vows, then he is qualified to give teachings and practices like Kalachakra. It’s really that simple for me.

In July 2016, the 11th Panchen Lama bestowed the Kalachakra initiation at his New Palace near Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in Shigatse

But the Dalai Lama’s incredible announcement does have many implications for the Tibetans and their leadership which is the CTA. It will be very interesting to see what they do after this and how they will react. Will the attacks against those who support both Panchen Lamas stop? Will the Dalai Lama make even more announcements about the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama? After all, the Dalai Lama is really changing his mind on the Panchen Lama selected by Chinese now. If His Holiness the Dalai Lama can reverse his views to accepting the Chinese Panchen Lama as a genuine emanation of the Panchen Lama which is what he seems to be doing now, he can change his mind on other issues such as the Dorje Shugden ban also for the positive. Will he even go so far as to say something positive about Dorje Shugden practitioners, who are another group of people that the CTA says is supported by China? Let’s see, only time will tell what His Holiness’ next move is. Many things can happen for the better. Whatever it is, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is starting to support the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama as an authentic emanation. His statements are clear in the video.

Going back to the beginning

hhdlonpanchenlama001

In 1989, His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama passed away. The search for his holy reincarnation began shortly after, and on 14th May 1995, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, then aged six, was recognised by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet. Three days later, the boy and his family went missing and for the last 22 years, their whereabouts have remained unknown.

Six months later, in November 1995, the Chinese leadership identified their own candidate, Gyaincain Norbu, who was subsequently enthroned as the 11th Panchen Lama Jetsun Lobsang Jampa Lhundrub Chokyi Gyalpo Pelsangpo. The recognition came after the Chinese government consulted high lamas in Tibet who used traditional methods to confirm and recognise the boy as the 11th Panchen Lama, along with the Chinese government’s independent methods.

The Chinese backed Panchen Lama

As one might expect, the Chinese candidate was not well-received by the Tibetan community. The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), or the Tibetan exiled leadership based in Dharamsala, North India, accused the Chinese government of being a secular leadership interfering in religious matters, and of possessing ulterior motives to identify their own Panchen Lama. In response, the CTA launched huge publicity campaigns and in the last two decades, their “Missing Panchen Lama” campaign has grown to become one of the most prominent campaigns of the Free Tibet movement.

This campaign has been used by Tibetan supporters to vilify China as a kidnapper, painting the Tibetans as victimised underdogs deserving of moral and financial support against the so-called child-abusing monster that is China. To this day, Tibetan supporters continue to hold candlelight vigils for Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, gathering signatures and petitions to try and pressure the United Nations and human rights organisations to investigate the case. A large poster of the missing boy even hangs in Majnu Ka Tilla, the main Tibetan settlement in Delhi, India, serving as a daily reminder that the case still very much affects Tibetans.

His Holiness the 11th Panchen Lama's tutor, Venerable Kachen Jamyang Gyatso. There must be something very special about this Kachen-la if China selected him to become the tutor of the second highest lama in Tibet (only the Dalai Lama is higher). China would not select any ordinary monk or lama to be the tutor of the Panchen Lama.

His Holiness the 11th Panchen Lama’s tutor, Venerable Kachen Jamyang Gyatso. There must be something very special about this Kachen-la if China selected him to become the tutor of the second highest lama in Tibet (only the Dalai Lama is higher). China would not select any ordinary monk or lama to be the tutor of the Panchen Lama. Kachen-la is well known to be a scholar of the highest order as well as a great lineage holder. Respected among the tens of thousands of monks and scholars, he has passed his knowledge, initiations and commentaries to H.H. the 11th Panchen Lama. Panchen Lama is known to be very learned like his teacher.

Recent developments however, threaten the narrative that the CTA has maintained for so long. The CTA has long held that the Dalai Lama’s candidate, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, is one of the world’s longest serving political prisoners. They say that the Chinese-backed candidate is a pretender to the throne and has no business teaching or advising anyone as the Panchen Lama. Yet, it appears that His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself no longer agrees with everything that the CTA has promoted for 22 years. It will also be interesting to see what the Independence activists (rangzen) and their foreign supporters around the world have to say to this new statement by the Dalai Lama regarding the China-recognised Panchen Rinpoche which is a 360 degree turn. They have used the Panchen Lama to make China look bad for decades. Without the Dalai Lama backing their statements about the Panchen Lama, their statements seem to lose power. Not only is the Dalai Lama now supporting the China-recognised Panchen Lama, but Dalai Lama is saying the one he recognised is safe and sound. If the activists around the world continue to say the China-backed Panchen Lama is a fake, they are contradicting His Holiness the Dalai Lama. That would not be good. Also the Dalai Lama is saying from reliable sources the Panchen Lama he himself recognised is safe, getting an education, alive and well.

On April 25, 2018 (the day of the 29th birthday celebrations for the missing boy), when the Dalai Lama arrived at Gaggal Airport in Dharamsala, he announced in an interview that Gedhun Choekyi Nyima is alive and well. Stunningly, His Holiness also endorsed the Chinese-backed candidate, adding that the “official Panchen Lama” is receiving a good education from a qualified teacher. The Dalai Lama then went on to provide evidence for the possibility of two genuine Panchen Lama candidates; that is, the Dalai Lama openly stated that the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama might be real.

It is an admission that no one would have ever expected from the Dalai Lama, given the CTA’s campaigns for the last two decades. Could it indicate that the CTA’s feelings towards the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama are finally thawing, and why would that even matter?

The importance of the Panchen Lama

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the previous 10th Panchen Lama.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and the previous 10th Panchen Lama.

In the general spiritual and political hierarchy of Tibet, the role of the Panchen Lama is the second highest in the land; in Tibet, there is none equal to him in rank, other than the Dalai Lama. In fact, in the Dalai Lama’s absence, when the country is between Dalai Lama incarnations, the Panchen Lama is the de facto ruler of the country spiritually, along with a regent for secular matters. On official visits, for example when the 14th Dalai Lama visited China in 1955, the Panchen Lama is often involved in these trips, accompanying the Dalai Lama as an equal and representing Tibet as a senior statesman.

The Dalai Lamas and Panchen Lamas have always had a close relationship. They are so close that when the Panchen Lama dies, it is the Dalai Lama’s responsibility to identify, recognise and enthrone the next Panchen Lama. Similarly, it is the Panchen Lama’s responsibility to identify, recognise and enthrone the next Dalai Lama.

Hence the issue of the Panchen Lama has been a particularly sensitive one for those who pursue Tibetan independence or autonomy, and are fearful of what will happen in the post-14th Dalai Lama period. Even though the CTA calls themselves a democracy, it is no secret that all decisions must ultimately meet with the Dalai Lama’s approval. Without a Dalai Lama to lead the CTA, what will their ship and its passengers do without a captain? World leaders entertain and financially support the Tibetans because of the respect they have for the Dalai Lama – how will the so-called Tibetan cause be affected without a Dalai Lama, when its success is so closely identified with the image and reputation of the Dalai Lama?

Hence, for the CTA, having a Panchen Lama squarely under their control becomes a question of life and death; they will need the Panchen Lama to identify the 15th Dalai Lama so that Tibetans are not left without a leader after the 14th Dalai Lama’s passing. A Panchen Lama under Chinese control, while the Dharamsala-backed Panchen Lama is missing means the identification of a Dharamsala-approved 15th Dalai Lama is going to be fraught with difficulties and confusion. It will not happen very easily but the Dalai Lama does not seem to be worried about this, given his recent statements.

Did the Dalai Lama scupper the CTA’s plans?

hhdlonpanchenlama003

In fact, given his recent statements, the Dalai Lama’s position on the 11th Panchen Lama no longer matches the CTA’s and it seems he is now willing to accept the possibility of a 15th Dalai Lama recognised by the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama. After all, the Dalai Lama’s remarks directly contradict what the Tibetan government, as well as the 1000-plus Tibet support groups around the world have asserted for over two decades.

Since 1995, the CTA have always maintained that Beijing has the missing Panchen Lama under house arrest or had him killed. On the one hand, the CTA and Tibet support groups have spent 22 years claiming that the Chinese government killed the boy; on the other hand, the Dalai Lama is now saying that he is alive and well, and receiving a normal education. The Dalai Lama is, in essence, saying that there is no reason to worry about the boy. The Dalai Lama is determined to make China happy and make peace with China as he very much wishes to return to a Tibet within China.

Simultaneously, the Dalai Lama also made remarks regarding the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama which have been viewed as an indirect endorsement of his credentials and recognition. The Dalai Lama praised his education, saying that he has been receiving teachings from a good, qualified teacher. It implies that the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama is a good lama, or will become a good teacher himself in the future; that is, whatever the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama has to say or teach is valid, since he received it from a qualified source.

These remarks constitute a huge reversal in the Dalai Lama’s 22-year stance on the Panchen Lama but what has been most worrying for the Tibetan leadership is the Dalai Lama’s provision of evidence that there can be more than two emanations of a lama existing at the same time. This opens the possibility that the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama could be the real deal, and it is something that no Tibetan has ever entertained the possibility of before – that Beijing, in fact, could have the real Panchen Lama under their control.

The tale of two Panchen Lamas

Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, then aged six, was recognised by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet.

Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, then aged six, was recognised by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet.

In his short interview, the Dalai Lama voluntarily stated that some lamas have two emanations and he referenced Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, a lama who lived 100 years ago. When he died, Khyentse Wangpo famously reincarnated as five individuals: Dzongsar Khyentse, the 1st Palpung (Bheru) Khyentse, Dzogchen Khyentse, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and (Kathog) Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro.

Upon his passing, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro went on to reincarnate as three individuals: Khyentse Yeshe, Jigme Khyentse and Dzongsar Khyentse.

The Dalai Lama cited the Khyentse incarnations as proof that it is possible for a lama to take rebirth as more than one being. Even Hollywood has previously chronicled this phenomenon – in the movie Little Buddha by Bernardo Bertolucci, the title character Lama Dorje takes rebirth as three young children, who are the manifestations of his body, speech and mind. Interestingly, one of the Khyentse incarnations (Dzongsar Khyentse) was an advisor on Little Buddha to ensure the movie remained philosophically and historically accurate.

So is it possible to have more than one 11th Panchen Lama? The Dalai Lama was keen to provide evidence that it is possible even though, as you will notice from the video, there were no related questions that would prompt this information. In fact, this is not the first time there have been two Panchen Lamas. Even in the case of the previous 10th Panchen Lama, it is very well-known that two boys were identified as candidates to occupy the Panchen Lama throne. In the end, both were recognised as reincarnations of the 9th Panchen Lama but only one, the mind emanation, ascended to the throne. The other was recognised as Panchen Otrul, or “emanation of Panchen”.

Hence, according to the Dalai Lama’s interview, there may be two 11th Panchen Lama incarnations i.e. the one he identified and who disappeared, and the one that received official Chinese backing. But if it is possible for two Panchen Lama incarnations to exist simultaneously, then why did the Dalai Lama let everyone believe for 22 years that there is only one Panchen Lama, and that he was kidnapped? The Dalai Lama cited Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo’s example to apply to the current situation of having two authentic incarnations of Panchen Rinpoche, otherwise why even bring up the subject of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo within a question regarding the Panchen Lama? He is gently starting to shrewdly guide the world into accepting that there are two authentic incarnations of the Panchen Lama although only one will officially occupy the ‘seat’ of Panchen. He has to do this because for decades he was ‘silent’ on this matter and allowed his people to say the Chinese Panchen Lama is fake. Now he has to reverse this.

Maybe the Dalai Lama made a mistake?

hhdlonpanchenlama005

Knowing that lamas of such attainments do not do things arbitrarily, questions have been asked as to why the 10th Panchen Lama would take rebirth in two emanations and why the Dalai Lama would allow one of them to be ‘kidnapped’. There are two possibilities:

SCENARIO #1:

The Dalai Lama made an uncalculated mistake, and his premature identification of the 11th Panchen Lama led to a young boy’s disappearance. That is, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima is the real Panchen Lama and the Dalai Lama’s decision endangered the future of the Tibetans because it pushed the Panchen Lama into Chinese hands.

SCENARIO #2:

The Dalai Lama made a calculated decision and intentionally identified a lesser incarnation of the Panchen Lama, to compel the Chinese government to intervene and identify their own candidate, who is the actual mind or principal emanation. That is, the Chinese have had the real Panchen Lama all along and the Dalai Lama’s decision allowed the mind emanation to ascend to the throne and ensured that the Chinese government threw the full weight of their support behind him. The Dalai Lama acted for the greater good of sentient beings everywhere; his decision would allow the Panchen Lama’s mind emanation to manifest his full abilities, thanks to Chinese backing.

In the light of the Dalai Lama’s most recent comments, it seems clear that the Dalai Lama’s actions were motivated by the second scenario. After all, Tibetans and Tibetan Buddhists commonly regard the Dalai Lama as the emanation of Chenrezig, the omniscient Buddha of Compassion. It would be hard to believe that Chenrezig’s clairvoyance failed and he made a mistake in prematurely identifying the Panchen Lama. Therefore Scenario #2 seems much more likely, and more aligned with everything else that we know about the Dalai Lama — that he did this on purpose.

In allowing the Tibetans to protest for 22 years, the Dalai Lama was able to provoke the Chinese leadership for two decades into continuously supporting their candidate, who is actually the real mind emanation of the Panchen Lama. As a result, while the Tibetans and their supporters were protesting for Gedhun Choekyi Nyima to be freed, the real Panchen Lama gained the platform and resources necessary to turn the Wheel of Dharma on a much greater scale.

That is to say, the entire two Panchen Lama debacle is actually a play between two enlightened lamas who can look beyond labels of border, geography and politics, and are working together to do what is best for sentient beings as a whole, regardless of whether they are Tibetan, Chinese, etc. Hence, the Dalai Lama’s endorsement of the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama may be the latest act in this saga, designed to open the door for the world to have faith in him.

However, there may be other more prosaic reasons surrounding the Dalai Lama’s comments and his acceptance of the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama: he just wants to go back home to Tibet.

Returning to Tibet

hhdlonpanchenlama006

In recent months, the Dalai Lama has been making an increasing number of overtures towards the Chinese leadership. His Holiness has become increasingly vocal about his wish to return to Tibet, even sending his emissary Samdhong Rinpoche on a secret mission to negotiate terms with the Chinese.

Accepting the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama means denying a major part of the Free Tibet campaigns for the last 22 years; it means the Dalai Lama is removing what has been a thorn in the side of the Chinese government, and softening his stance towards the Chinese to try and open the possibility for him to return home to Tibet.

Hence his endorsement of the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama is just the latest in a list of concessions he has made and the Tibetans should probably expect more. But what does it mean for the Tibetans and their leadership?

  1. To have a Chinese-backed Panchen Lama means that the identification of the next Dalai Lama would fall under the control of the Chinese government. Tibetans in exile would never follow a Chinese-backed 15th Dalai Lama, leaving them essentially leaderless once the 14th Dalai Lama is gone. It would throw the Tibetan community in exile into turmoil.
  2. With his comments, the Dalai Lama is in effect giving up Tibet’s future. His endorsement of the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama means there will no longer be any opportunity for a Dharamsala-backed Dalai Lama recognised by a Dharamsala-backed Panchen Lama. Without an exiled 15th Dalai Lama, it cements the possibility that there will no longer be a fight for independence or autonomy spearheaded by such a candidate.

There is every reason for Tibet support groups to be disheartened and discouraged. Essentially, they wasted their time and resources for the last 22 years campaigning for a missing boy who is not necessarily who they have been led to believe. If he is just an ordinary child, they made a big fuss for nothing; if he is a lesser emanation, it was intentional that he was ‘given up’ by the Dalai Lama for the real Panchen Lama to ascend to the throne. So what exactly were they campaigning for all these years?

And there is every reason for the Tibetan community to worry. His Holiness is probably mindful of the fact he is already 83 years old and the world’s view of Tibetans is slowly changing. They are no longer universally supported like they once were; beset with self-created scandals and with the CTA’s reputation in tatters, financial support and foreign aid is increasingly harder to come by.

The global economic downturn has also had an impact; to protect their economic health and further their own financial interests, nations are opting to forge bilateral relations with China to benefit from lucrative trade deals. Thus, where befriending the CTA was previously viewed as advantageous, it is no longer financially viable to support the supposedly downtrodden Tibetans and antagonise the Chinese leaders and their people, who are well on their way to becoming the next economic and political superpower.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping meeting on April 27, 2018 in Wuhan, China.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping meeting on April 27, 2018 in Wuhan, China.

The Dalai Lama, an astute statesman, sees all of this – at his very doorstep, the Tibetans’ greatest benefactor, India, is inching towards China. Once the Sino-Indian relationship becomes solid, the Indians will no longer have any use for the Tibetans as a political card against the Chinese, and the CTA will be left powerless and subject to the whims of Indian policy change. So it must be that before the Tibetans become completely irrelevant to everyone, the Dalai Lama is now making his own strategic play to befriend China before both China and India does not have any use for him anymore. This explosive statement comes just days before an informal closed-door meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where the Tibet issue is expected to be discussed amongst other pressing topics. Before his words no longer carry any weight, while there is still value for China to watch him acquiescing to their demands, the Dalai Lama is making a final play for a return to Tibet on his own terms.

Unity is a distant dream

hhdlpanchenlama007

The Dalai Lama’s comments have been welcomed by many quarters. It signals that the Dalai Lama is softening his stance on the issues of the last 20 years, something which excites many marginalised Tibetan groups. The Dorje Shugden high lamas and along with hundreds of thousands of Tibetans have accepted the Panchen Lama recognised by China as he is well educated in Buddhism, said to be very gentle, kind and a veritable scholar of Buddhism able to give initiation and teachings into one of the most complex teachings of Buddhism recently which is the Kalacakra tantra attended by tens of thousands in Tibet.

In the last 20 years, the Dalai Lama has taken a very hardline stance towards the issue of the Chinese Panchen Lama – that is, he does not accept the Chinese Panchen Lama and the real Panchen Lama is the candidate that he recognised. Anyone who supports the Chinese Panchen Lama is accused of being anti-Tibetan, a Chinese-paid spy and a traitor to the Tibetan community. Anyone ‘supporting’ the Chinese Panchen is attacked on social media. That has to change now. To attack the Chinese-recognised Panchen Rinpoche and supporters is to attack the Dalai Lama’s ‘endorsement’ of him now.

The other major issue which the Dalai Lama has been very firm about is that of Dorje Shugden – that is, Dorje Shugden practitioners are disobeying his instructions to give up the practice, and they need to be segregated from the rest of the Tibetan community.

Ironically, those who maintain their Shugden practice have been accused of showing respect to and support for the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama. In this way, they are labeled double traitors – not only do they disobey the Dalai Lama, but they support the Chinese government’s choice.

Now that the Dalai Lama himself endorses the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama, it is the first “aspect” of Dorje Shugden practitioners that he is accepting. Does this mean it is only a matter of time before he changes his overall stance towards Shugden practitioners, and they are accepted back into mainstream society as it should be within a democracy? After all, the issue of accepting the Chinese Panchen Lama is much more significant since it concerns Tibet’s second highest lama, one of their political leaders and therefore the potential of any Tibetan freedom or autonomy. In light of the Dalai Lama’s about-face regarding the Chinese Panchen Lama, a softening of his stance towards Dorje Shugden practitioners also seems possible. The majority of Dorje Shugden practitioners continue to respect His Holiness the Dalai Lama and wish him well and hope for his reversal on the Dorje Shugden issue as they have suffered much due to the ban.

This would be welcomed not only by Shugden practitioners alone, but by all Tibetans who have grown weary of the in-fighting that continues to plague their community. Whether it is rangzen (independence) versus umaylam (meaningful autonomy), Lobsang Sangay versus Penpa Tsering, U-Tsangpas versus Khampas, this Karmapa versus that Karmapa, or Dorje Shugden versus non-Dorje Shugden, there are just so many issues dividing the Tibetan community that harmony, let alone independence, feels like a distant dream.

Bringing Dorje Shugden practitioners back into the fold will surely be the quickest and fastest division to resolve, leaving the community with one less divisive issue to contend with. Whether or not they are in Tibet, in India or the West, come what may, they will at least be more united. Surely that is going to be the best way for the Tibetans to have a brighter, more harmonious future. Please remember that the Dalai Lama wishes for the same thing, that Tibetans inside and outside of Tibet will have harmony. Not only is the Dalai Lama now implying that everyone should comply with China’s wishes but in this way, the Dalai Lama’s statement that the Chinese-recognised Panchen Lama is “the official Panchen Lama” is the most earth-shattering statement that His Holiness the Dalai Lama has made. Yes, His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the video said clearly that the Chinese-recognised Panchen Lama is the official one.

Dalai Lama has said of the possibility of him not reincarnating anymore.
For me, it is enough to have buddhism preserved by monks and nuns whose lineage are clear and are well-educated to do what they have to.
Incarnations of high lamas are like cherries on top of a cake. The cake is any qualified monk/nun. Good to have cherries, but actually the cake itself suffices.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is in Dharamsala, which is broken into two parts. Upper Dharamsala is where the Dalai Lama’s palace is located with his audience room and main prayer hall. It is also the location of the Dialectics School, Gaden Shartse’s guesthouse, restaurants, tourist hotels and main tourist areas.

A short ride down takes you to the lower part of Dharamsala where the Tibetan government is located. It is the location of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Nechung monastery, the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, the Tibetan arts centre…it’s all in one area. And the reason why it’s split into upper and lower Dharamsala is because the area is mountainous.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives was established by the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government to preserve all the ancient texts – both secular and spiritual – of Tibet and in the process, translate them into various languages like English. This book, Overview of Buddhist Tantra, by Panchen Sonam Drakpa was one of the books translated into English. What’s very interesting is that the book very clearly says that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, one of the five main disciples of Lama Tsongkhapa. It also says that after that, he was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen.

So the book is basically saying that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, Panchen Sonam Drakpa and Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen – the three Drakpas – are of the same mindstream.

Now that’s very peculiar because if Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen’s previous life is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, the renowned composer of 45 volumes of Dharma texts, the abbot of three monasteries AND the 15th Gaden Tripa, the holder of Lama Tsongkhapa’s throne…if that’s the case, how can Panchen Sonam Drakpa take rebirth as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen and become an evil spirit and have a negative mind?

Prior to Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, he was Panchen Sonam Drakpa and before that, he was Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa. How can a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa reincarnate as the erudite master Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and then die and reincarnate as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen…and then Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, due to a bad and negative prayer, become the evil spirit Dorje Shugden? How is that possible? Logically, it’s not.

What’s incredible is that all of this was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives under the Dalai Lama’s guidance. They contradict themselves because on one hand, the Tibetan leaders say Dorje Shugden is an evil spirit. On the other hand they’re printing a book saying that Panchen Sonam Drakpa, whose later incarnation became Dorje Shugden, is of this illustrious mindstream.

So how can the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, which is under the auspices of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government, print the translation of a book composed by the previous incarnation of a so-called evil spirit? How can they then say in the book that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, and his next life was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen?

Prior to the Dorje Shugden ban and controversy, everyone in Tibet knew that Dorje Shugden is Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and that Panchen Sonam Drakpa is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen. The three Drakpas, they are one mindstream emanating again and again to benefit other beings.

And as we all know, Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen became Dorje Shugden so it totally doesn’t make sense to call him an evil spirit, then highlight all of his previous lives as erudite masters, and publish all of this information under their own library. So you can see the contradictions. You can read all of this for yourself in Overview of Buddhist Tantra, which was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives.

    OVERVIEW OF BUDDHIST TANTRA

GENERAL PRESENTATION OF THE CLASSES OF TANTRA,
CAPTIVATING THE MINDS OF THE FORTUNATE ONES

rgyud sde spyi’i rnam par bzhag pa
skal bzang gi yid ‘phrog ces bya ba bzhugs so

    BY
    PANCHEN SONAM DRAGPA
    (Pan-chen bSod-nams grags-pa, 1478-1554)

    O Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel! (Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal!)
In the vast expanse of Your bodhi-mind,
The mind that the Buddhas have lauded for as many as
    one hundred times,
You have developed “merit” shining like the sun.
Through Your skill in learning, debate and writing,
As illuminating as one hundred thousand sun rays,
You have developed in You a complete knowledge of
    the entire sutras and tantras,
Resembling a garden of flowers in full bloom.
    The power of Your speech is like the sun;
The fame of your name has reached the three realms of
    this world.
O Sonam Dragpa, the teacher of teachers!
I bow down at your feet.

In the vast garden of Your great teachings,
The intelligent young people gather for
The ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission,’
Just as they are attracted to
The one hundred thousand types of nectar
Dripping from a flower of one hundred petals.
May I be able to experience
The taste of the secret tantra!

Panchen Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the holder of sutra and Vajrayana teachings, was a master whose outstanding learning and spiritual accomplishments are well known by all the learned ones in Tibet. His first incarnation came in the form of one of the five prestigious disciples of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) and became known as Vinaya Holder (Dulzin) Dragpa Gyaltsen (Gragspa rgyal-mtshan). Then came Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the author of the present text. The next was Nagri Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsen (mNga’-ris sPrul-sku Grags-pa rgyal-mtshan). In this way, a line of his incarnations, each with the Dragpa (gragspa) surname, followed successively.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was born in the 14th century in Tsetang (rTsed-thang) in the Lhoka (Lho-kha) region of Central Tibet. He entered the great seat of learning, Sera Thekchenling (Se-ra theg-chen-gling) monastic university, where he became the personal disciple of spiritual master Donyo Dangden (Dhon-yod dang-ldan) and His Holiness the Second Dalai Lama Gedun Gyatso (dGe-‘dun rgya-mtsho). Under them, he studied the entire teachings of sutra, tantra and their commentaries, and became known for his outstanding learning. He also received from them the empowerments, reading transmissions, guides and instructions of the entire body of spiritual training. On becoming the fully blessed one, the Dalai Lama appointed him the abbot of the Loseling (Blo-gsalgling) college, one of the four colleges of Drepung (‘Bras-dpung)- the most prestigious monastic university in Tibet before 1959, with over 10,000 monks on its register. He continued to be the abbot of this college for the next six years; and after him the tenure for each of his successors in this position was fixed for a period of six years, a rule that is followed even today.

He was then appointed the head of the Gelugpa (dGe-lugs-pa) order, the throne holder of Gaden (dGa’-ldan), thus becoming the 15th regent of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-khapa), the second Buddha. In his eulogy to him, Khedrub Gelek Pelsang (mKhas-grub dGe-legs dpal- bzang) says:

O Lama, the second successor of the Unsubduable One,
The regent of the Lord of Dharma,
    You are the one who made the virtuous qualities thrive;
You are the one who ascended to the golden throne uplifted
    by the fearless lions.
    May Your success thrive forever!

He continued to be the throne holder for the next seven years, during which time he promoted the spread of Lord Tsongkhapa’s (Tsong-kha-pa) precious teachings, the Gelug (dGe-lugs) tradition, across the land in all directions. He also paid special attention to the practice of monastic rules and the learning and meditation of Buddhism in the monasteries such as Sera (Se-ra), Drepung (‘Bras-spungs), Kyomolung (sKyo-mo-lung), Phagmo Chode (Phag-mo chos-sde), Nyeding (Nye-sdings), Ödna (’Od-sna) and Chöde Rinchen (Chos-sde rin-chen) etc. and improved them to a great extent. He taught the Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso (bSod-nams rGya-mtsho) as the latter’s spiritual master. It was from him that the Dalai Lama received the name Sonam (bSod-nams).

His contributions in the literary field are enormous; and, indeed, they are the most valuable of all his contributions. Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) has rightly said:

    Of all one’s deeds,
The ‘deeds of speech’ are the most valuable.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was a person with an extraordinary talent for teaching, debate and writing. In his colophon to Bu mey chi don zab don sel wey dron mey (dBu ma’i spyi don zab don gsal ba’i sgron me), he wrote:

In the field of teaching, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would outdo them in this field, Arya Asanga and his
    brother transmigrated into another realm.

In the field of debate, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would find out the areas they had contradicted and
that I would examine them and put forth my arguments,
the logician Dignaga (Digh-naga) and Dharmakirti tactfully
    bypassed me.

In the field of writing, I am [next to none!] [In my eyes,]
Arya-sura was just good at spreading the works, which
are like ‘disputes~ between an insect and a field.’

I am the learned man. Peerless in the field of teaching,
    debate and writing!

For some this passage might sound utterly nonsensical, but the most learned master of our age, the talented teacher, logician and writer, the late tutor to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Yongdzin Trijang Dorjechang (Yongs-‘dzin Khri-byang rDorje-‘Chang), said: “Now, some people of our time, who consider themselves learned scholars, think that this is utter nonsense; but they are wrong.”

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) wrote over 45 volumes of books dealing with many different subjects, such as the commentaries on the sutras and tantras, the saddhana manuals of the tutelary deities, history, religious history and so forth. Among these, one that is very important for all who wish to learn and meditate on the path-of the practical aspect of Buddhism in general and that of Vajrayana in particular is the Leg shey gyu de chi nam par shagpa kelsang gi yi trod (Legs bshad rgyud sde spyi’i rnam par bzhag pa skal bzang gi yid ‘phrod). In this book, he has explained precisely how the four tantras differ from one another. He has also fully described the stages of the two spontaneous path practices of the Vajrayana tradition, dealing with the ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission’, thus interpreting without mistake the intention of Adhi-Buddha Vajradhara.

May the reprint of this text, which the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is publishing herewith, bring peace and happiness in this world!

All enlightened beings are worthy of homage and worship. They are the best beings to take refuge in and we should offer them our prayers as we can put our full confidence in them. Of all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, I personally find that Manjushri is extremely important. This is because what keeps us in samsara (cyclic rebirth) is our total ignorance and misunderstanding of the reality of existence. What is necessary to penetrate this deep ignorance that keeps us bound in a perpetual state of reincarnation is wisdom. We need many types of wisdom which can be acquired by relying on Manjushri as our yidam (meditational deity). By focusing on his meditation, practice, mantra and path we can gain wisdom in order to have the tool to penetrate the reality of existence. Therefore, Manjushri is an extremely important Buddha for us to focus on and take refuge in.

H.H. the 10th Panchen Lama (Main figure)

(Top to bottom): Amitabha, Lama Tsongkhapa, H.H. the 10th Panchen Lama, Tsangpa Karpo and Dorje Shugden.

The Panchen Lama line of incarnations are believed to be emanations of Amitabha, the Buddha of Boundless Light. Amitabha is relied on strongly within Pure Land Buddhism that is popularly practised in East Asia. He embodies the awakened aggregate of discernment and that means he purifies desire within the mindstream of practitioners. He currently resides in Sukhavati, the Western Pure Land, where practitioners aspire to take rebirth in order to continue their spiritual practice.

Panchen Lama is not just a name but a title bestowed by the Great Fifth Dalai Lama upon his illustrious teacher, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen and it literally means ‘Great Scholar’ in recognition of his teacher’s scholarly prowess. Since then, the Panchen Lamas have been regarded as the second highest incarnation lineage after the Dalai Lamas in Tibet. Although this incarnation lineage stems all the way back to India, it is traditionally traced back to Kedrub Gelek Pelsang, one of the two main heart disciples of Lama Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug tradition. Furthermore, the Great Fifth Dalai Lama bestowed the monastery of Tashi Lhunpo in Shigatse to be the monastic seat of the Panchen Lamas. Therefore, Tashi Lhunpo which was originally established by the First Dalai Lama Gendrub Drub has since become the monastic seat of the later incarnations of the Panchen Lama.

In 1938, the 10th Panchen Lama was born in what is today’s Qinghai province. He was enthroned and given the name Choekyi Gyaltsen at Kumbum Monastery in 1949. In 1954, the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama travelled to Beijing in order to attend the first session of the first National People’s Congress, meeting Mao Zedong and other Chinese leaders. When the Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959, the Panchen Lama remained in Tibet and supported the Chinese government in order to be the spiritual head of his people that remained in Tibet. Following a tour of Tibet, in 1962 the Panchen Lama wrote a document entitled the 70,000 Character Petition denouncing the abusive policies of the Chinese in Tibet. In 1964, he was publicly humiliated and dismissed from all posts and imprisoned. In 1978, he returned his monastic vows and married Li Jie, a soldier and medical student. In 1983, Li Jie gave birth to a daughter who was named Yabshi Pan Rinzinwangmo. She is highly revered as she is the only known offspring of the either Panchen Lama or Dalai Lama incarnation lineages. The Panchen Lama entered clear light from a heart attack in Shigatse at the age of 51 in 1989.

One of the main protectors of the Panchen Lama line of incarnations is Tsangpa Karpo, the peaceful aspect of Setrap Chen. Setrap along with his various manifestations is a Dharma Protector that arose in ancient times in India and was brought to Tibet by Lotsawa Loden Sherab. Dorje Shugden was also closely associated with the Panchen Lamas by virtue of his previous life as Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen, the heart disciple of His Holiness the 4th Panchen Lama. There is a large chapel dedicated to Dorje Shugden in Tashi Lhunpo Monastery which still stands today. It was consecrated by Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche at the request of His Holiness the 9th Panchen Lama. Within the collected works of the 10th Panchen Lama, there is an extensive liturgy propitiating Dorje Shugden. Therefore, his writings bear testament to the fact that the Panchen Lama worshiped and considered Dorje Shugden to be beneficial and his practice efficacious.

H.H. the 4th Panchen Lama (Main figure)

(Top to bottom): Manjushri, H.H. the 4th Panchen Lama, H.H. the 5th Dalai Lama, Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen, Dorje Shugden and Four-Faced Mahakala.

Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen who later became known as the 4th Panchen Lama was born in a village called Drukgya in the Lhan valley, in Tsang, in 1570. He searched for and enthroned Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso as the 5th Dalai Lama and Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen as the 4th Zimkhang Gongma (the incarnation of Panchen Sonam Drakpa). These two lamas became the heart disciples of Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen.

Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen managed to keep suppression by the Tsang king at bay by healing the king from disease and subsequently, he was allowed to recognise the Fifth Dalai Lama. Later, he forged an alliance with the invading Mongols after they had defeated the Tsang king and thus, he was able to enthrone the Dalai Lama as the temporal leader of Tibet at Drepung Monastery. In turn, the Dalai Lama unified Tibet and established his government of the Gaden Podrang. He offered his monastic seat of Tashi Lhunpo to his guru, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen and also bestowed upon him the title Panchen Lama. Thereafter, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen was known as the Panchen Lama and Tashi Lhunpo became the monastic seat of the Panchen Lama incarnation lineage. On the spiritual side, he wrote prolifically and one of his most famous works was the Lama Chopa, also known as the Guru Puja. It was originally transmitted through an oral tradition and stemmed from the sacred teachings and transmissions that Manjushri gave to Lama Tsongkhapa.

Four-Faced Mahakala is a protective emanation of Manjushri, the patron Bodhisattva of Wisdom and is a protector of the Cakrasamvara Tantra. This is one of the main tantric systems widely practised within the Gelug order and therefore, this protector is widely propitiated by many high lamas of our tradition as well.

Upon his passing Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen arose in the form of Dorje Shugden, who became a protector of the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa and has been widely propitiated as such ever since.

I love these pictures. These are beautiful pictures of H.E. Dilgo Kyentse Rinpoche going to meet His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche and getting blessings from Panchen Rinpoche. You can see how humble Dilgo Kyentse Rinpoche is. He is always bowed in the presence of Panchen Rinpoche. Dilgo Kyentse Rinpoche is a great lama himself yet has not ego to get blessings from another very high lama. Beautiful to see this.

Listening to the chanting of sacred words, melodies, mantras, sutras and prayers has a very powerful healing effect on our outer and inner environments. It clears the chakras, spiritual toxins, the paths where our ‘chi’ travels within our bodies for health as well as for clearing the mind. It is soothing and relaxing but at the same time invigorates us with positive energy. The sacred sounds invite positive beings to inhabit our environment, expels negative beings and brings the sound of growth to the land, animals, water and plants. Sacred chants bless all living beings on our land as well as inanimate objects. Do download and play while in traffic to relax, when you are about to sleep, during meditation, during stress or just anytime. Great to play for animals and children. Share with friends the blessing of a full Dorje Shugden puja performed at Kechara Forest Retreat by our puja department for the benefit of others. Tsem Rinpoche

I am glad to hear His Holiness 14 Dalai Lama (HHDL) is taking a step by step to mend the relationship with China by :
a)sending his emissary Samdhong Rinpoche on a secret mission to negotiate terms with the Chinese.
    b) recognized the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama is real and is the official one.

As what His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche commented in the article that, this is likely to be HHDL wishes to return to Tibet and have a good term with China for future Tibet.

Well, to have a good relationship with China, HHDL will need to unite the Tibetan by practicing religious freedom.

  12. Stella Cheang on May 9, 2018 at 7:29 pm

It seems like His Holiness is in a habit of changing his mind, especially on important issues that relate to religion and tradition. For example, His Holiness changes his mind on the 11th Panchen Lama, Gyaincain Norbu. His Holiness identified and recognised another boy, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, as the 11th Panchen Lama in 1995. For the last 20 years plus, His Holiness and his leadership team believed that Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was kidnapped and murdered by the Chinese. Now, His Holiness says that this boy (now grown up) is alive and well. And His Holiness recognises Gyaincain Norbu as the reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama, making him the qualified Panchen Lama. Similarly, His Holiness changed his mind on an important religious topic, which is the practice of Dorje Shugden. His Holiness created praise prayers to Dorje Shugden but changed his mind and initiated a ban on this practice in 1996. While flicker-minded on important religious matters cast a bad and suspicious light on the religion and the practitioners, but there is also crazy wisdom practiced by highly attained beings who could be juxtapositioning issues to bless the people. May we have the wisdom to understand His Holiness. Thank you for this sharing.

The Dalai Lama not only acknowledges his candidate is still alive, he also endorsed Chinese-backed Panchen Lama as official one. Such wonderful news! It is clear that he wants to make peace with China. Dalai Lama’s supporters and followers should respect his wishes and give in full support.

The Chinese-backed Panchen Lama is known to be Dorje Shugden practitioner. Could this means Dalai Lama would make statement soon to clear Dorje Shugden controversy?

The Dalai Lama’s compassion and skillfulness brings so much hope and peace to everyone. His statement for sure has cleared many doubts, conflicts and controversies. We are looking forward the Dalai Lama put an end to the Dorje Shugden ban. May the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama long life and continue to turn the wheel of dharma _/\_

This is very good news! I agree with Rinpoche that HH the Dalai Lama premeditated this matter regarding HH the Panchen Lama. It is timely to support China as India is definitely mending their relationship with China for the general good of both economies. If the Tibetans in exile do not get on the band wagon and mend ties with China, they will lose their special privileges from India very soon. China has become too big and powerful not to be friends with.

If HH the Dalai Lama can contradict himself by recognizing the Chinese backed Panchen Lama, I don’t see why HH the Dalai Lama won’t back track on his ban on Dorje Shugden in the very near future. If HH really wants to return to Tibet, China will not tolerate his religious ban on Dorje Shugden. So HH will definitely have to make some comments on this matter very soon and also remove the page on his website regarding this ban if HH wants to return to Tibet.

China would want to see HH being a monk who is all accepting and supportive of the Chinese government’s promotion of peace and harmony. Any sort of dissension will not be tolerated by the Chinese government.

Could this be a sign of more good news to come?

I believe that this could be the first olive branch from His Holiness Dalai Lama to China to pave way for him to return to Tibet. Whether Tibet will regain its sovereignty remains a question mark but it would be wise for the Tibetan government-in-exile to mend the fences with China as China is now a superpower and they have a lot more to gain being a friend of China than a foe.

I am glad that the Panchen Lama recognised by HHDL is alive and well, and given what His Holiness said in the video, the Buddhist world should rejoice that we have the Panchen Lama returning as 2 very beneficial beings.

With this recent development, I believe that it is also symbolic of His Holiness accepting the Dorje Shugden practice as Panchen Lamas have traditionally relied on Dorje Shugden and continued this Protector practice to this day.

I sincerely thank Rinpoche and his wonderful team for sharing this good news. May His Holiness Dalai Lama and both Panchen Lamas have long and stable lives to continue turning the Wheel of Dharma.

Reincarnation occurs according to dharma in Three ways
    Ku (mind)
    SUNG (speech)
    And Thug (body)

    • Tashi on May 2, 2018 at 8:37 pm

      Tandin,

Reincarnation occurs according to Dharma in five primary ways:

      Ku (body)
      Sung (speech)
      Thuk (mind)
      Yonten (qualities)
      Trinley (activities)

And the reincarnation (emanations) of highly realized beings are not subject to just the above five methods, but it can be countless. No limits. Enlightened mind has no limits.

Dharma is really amazing ! We can mix ultimate, relative, pedagogical truths and skillful ways (tab lam). Rinpoche, you are very clever and use all these kinds of truth to create the pix… For exemple with the astral travel and powa in the body of other… Hahahaha You are a great magician.
Like this, you can creat realities.
    One example :
« They could eject their mind from their bodies, occupy that of a passing bird (for example), go somewhere far away to receive teachings then return to their original body later. »
Right, because everything his ALREADY our mind (ultimate truth), so : we are what we are seeing because every appearance is already our subtle body, our real body. Look at a bird and your are this appearance-bird. Because your are already « this one » (« wich » you are seeing).
Because everything is our mind, we can see what we want « in a body » : tulku system is the perfect exemple ! Even tulkus don’t remember there previous lifes, we are conviced-sure that they are the new reincarnations of the previous ones. Very nice and very helpful ! Definitely !
Also, we can create billions of emanations. Because everything is our emanation. So what about :
« “Oh, one of my emanations is somewhere else and doing something funny.” » ?

Maybe the next step will be the recognition of the 3 (or for 4) Karmapa… to pacify doubt,
quarrels and embrittlement of the temporal lineages. It could be very helpful.
I don’t know about the background of the problem with Sudden.
    Thank you rinpoche.

It is a great news that Dalai Lama recognised China backed Panchen Lama. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article and explaining the reasons for why certain decision and actions were done by Dalai Lama. We normally view the situation on the surface without understanding the origins and background of it. It make sense that Dalai Lama do not recognise the Panchen Lama at first in order for him to get the education and protection from China.

I hope with the recent change of Dalai Lama, he will also resolve the Dorje Shugden issue soon and bring down the authoritative power of CTA.

  19. graceleong on Apr 30, 2018 at 6:47 pm

His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama might be thawing the relations between Tibet and China by making the above comments of
    1) the Panchen Lama recognised by him, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima is safe and well; and
    2) the China recognised Panchen Lama, Gyaincain Norbu, is studying under a good teacher, which in other other words makes him a good student of the Dharma
    3) and that it’s possible to have multiple manifestation of the previous reincarnation.

This will halt the campaign “Missing Panchen Lama” started by the CTA, which was on for more then 2 decades, which painted China very negatively. Lots of funds were also collected by the CTA in the last 2 decades under this campaign …. it will certainly help to see more accountability and transparency on how these funds were being used ……

Overall it’s a very positive development and I am sure the Dharma world welcomes the idea of more Wisdom beings that will learn and teach Dharma to benefit many. With folded hands. Thank you Rinpoche.

Time has changed, its indeed a GREAT NEWS from HH Dalai Lama, the recognition of China-backed Panchen Lama . Every body looking forward to more wonderful news and with this recognition of China-backed Panchen Lama we can reassured the relationship between China and Tibet has improved then. So Panchen Lama is still alive and is doing well and will cleared any doubts of what has happen to Panchen Lama all these years since his disappearance years ago. It’s a good move, the next logical move hopefully HH Dalai Lama as wished to be back in Tibet and followed by lifting the ban on Dorje Shugden which is long overdue. May HH Dalai Lama live long and solved the Dorje Shugden controversy which can bring peace , harmony and unity to all around the world.
Thank you Rinpoche and the writer’s team for this wonderful sharing.

First of all, I am really happy that the Dalai Lama spoke about the China Panchen Lama. Indirectly, it was his way at this moment I feel in recognising this Panchen Lama which China has endorsed. Or why even bring him up at all.

I wonder what will happen if this China Panchen Lama endorsed the new Dalai Lama? After all, it is from the horse’s mouth that this Panchen Lama is authentic by mentioning that high lama can have various emanation. And it is no secret that Panchen Lama is a great practitioner of Dorje Shugden. And the lama’s he often are seen with are great practitioners of Dorje Shugden also.

I rejoice on this news as I feel, the Tibetans are making their way to make peace with China with this announcements for the sake of their people and preserving the Tibetan culture.

I do hope this is a start of more good news!

A great many thanks to Rinpoche for sharing the latest development news of His Holiness, The Dalai Lama’s turned-around stance in the acceptance of the Panchen Lama as the real incarnate. We happily rejoice for such great and happy news which we feel will greatly stabilize and strengthen the relationship between China and Tibet! Its so very kind and of great wisdom of the Dalai Lama to use this China-backed Panchen Lama event as a good teaching-event to teach and enlighten dharma practitioner-students, followers and interested religious followers of such unique religious happenings in Tibetan Buddhism. As mentioned, this China-backed Panchen Lama has a very good teaching implying it will result in a very good learned student! All religious Buddhist practitioners world-wide will be so happy with this stunning announcement by His Holiness, The Dalai Lama, which is expected to settle many doubts, issues, disharmony and problems. Of course, China definitely will be delighted with this announcement, so would the whole religious World. May there be peace, prosperity, and happiness for Tibet and China. Long live His Holiness, The Dalai Lama, His holiness Panchen Lama and our beloved guru, Tsem Tulku Rinpoche too. Om Mani Padme Hum.

  23. Sofi on Apr 30, 2018 at 2:54 am

It is indeed an interesting change coming from the Dalai Lama in accepting the Panchen Lama as a real incarnate as well. It does seemed that the Dalai Lama is protecting Panchen Lama as during that time anything the Dalai Lama says China would react opposite. So in rejecting this Panchen Lama, the condition was created for China to protect and offer the best for the Panchen Lama. Now that the conditions have changed with China being the top global economy, without the insecurities, the Panchen Lama has a safe environment to practice and teach in. The Dalai Lama no longer needs to protect but to allow the recognition of Panchen Lama be known and accepted by the exiles too. Wish I could see the red faces of those who had so strongly objected to this Panchen Lama. However with this, I think the Dalai Lama will need to return to Tibet, to make peace in order for his future incarnation to be recognised by the Panchen Lama. The future 15th Dalai Lama to be recognised by the Panchen Lama could very well be a Chinese born Dalai Lama. Those in exile need to note this and if they do not accept the Panchen Lama as authentic, then they will be without their Dalai Lama as both Panchen Lamas are in China.

With the Dalai Lama’s turn around stance on the Panchen Lama, if HH is really protecting the Panchen Lama in his formative years, then one could see the greatness of the Dalai Lama’s mind and his astute strategies that plays out into the future. A sign of an enlightenment mind? As such, would it be that the Dalai Lama had also created the conditions for Dorje Shugden’s beneficial practice to spread throughout all corners of the world? After all, Tibetan Buddhism had spread so rapidly and who better to be the more effective protector than Dorje Shugden who is the emanation of wisdom Buddha Manjusri and so karmically close to us. May the Dalai Lama recant on the Dorje Shugden ban swiftly as by uniting his people, a greater force could work towards achieving his wishes sooner.

Thank you Rinpoche for this latest development that can only be taken as a rejoice towards more favourable conditions for the harmony of practitioners. Will look forward to seeing the more news of the Dalai Lama’s return to Tibet and the conditions of his return.

I rejoice so much for these good news. It is a big relief to know that the Panchen Lama chosen by the Dalai Lama is safe as stated by H.H. the Dalai Lama. Also, to know that the Panchen Lama backed by China is an emanation of the Panchen Lama is, according to the Dalai Lama, such good news. Now, as stated so clearly by the Dalai Lama, the confusion can end and we rejoice in both Panchen Lamas. Also, when I look at the pictures the Panchen Lama backed by China has much similarities with the previous Panchen Lama. It is proof that enlightened beings can manifest according to their choice and our needs to benefit all sentient beings.

I believe that this will end the baseless accusations on social media against those who speak up for peace and harmony within the Tibetan Community. Many spoke up without knowing the Buddhist background and abilities of enlightened beings. May this also bring an end to the Dorje Shugden conflict, which has been going on now for many years and brought much pain to many.

Thank you for these great news!

Thank you Rinpoche and Blog Team for this article.

It is certainly a game changer when His Holiness Dalai Lama said these shocking statements.

    1. The Panchen Lama that he recognised is alive, living a normal life and currently studying under 1 good teacher
    2. There is a possibility of multiple emanations of a Lama and His Holiness gave the example of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo who emanated into 5 emanations one century ago

From my understanding, what His Holiness in inferring is that the last Panchen Lama might have multiple emanations which means that both the current Panchen Lamas might be real. His Holiness also told us that the Panchen Lama that he recognises and disappeared since the recognition is still alive. He is having a good education from a good teacher and a normal life. This is a stunning news.

This statement from His Holiness will put a total end to rumours of His Holiness’s Panchen Lama being killed or kidnapped by China. The fight over the 2 Panchen Lamas will end as well because now His Holiness is inferring that both Panchen Lamas are real. All those fights over who is the real Panchen Lama seems to be silly and unnecessary now.

Breaking news! Well all the people who was saying China-backed Panchen Lama is fake sure look ridiculous now. They attacked all the Tibetans and supporters who respected the China-backed Panchen Lama calling them all types of dirty and foul names in person and on social media. Calling them China stooges and China paid vulgar names for believing in the China-backed Panchen Lama. Now who looks so ridiculous? Now the Dalai Lama says the China-backed Panchen Lama is good and has a good teacher. If he has a good teacher it means he is turning into a good teacher himself. So he is qualified to teach. The end. Dalai Lama says the China-backed Panchen Lama is an emanation of the previous Panchen Lama because high lamas can incarnate back as several lamas at the same time. So the Panchen Lama recognized by the Dalai Lama and the China-backed Panchen Lama are both good and both are incarnations of the previous Panchen Lama. How the tables have turned. Now all the people who criticized China-backed Panchen Lama can keep quiet and remember how ridiculous they look now. Listen to what the Dalai Lama says now as of April 2018 about the China-backed Panchen Rinpoche- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hsyWE-fhZU

The Panchen Lama recognized by Dalai Lama is alive and well also according to Dalai Lama himself.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the wonderful news to all of us. The acknowledgement and recognition of China-backed Panchen Lama with positive comments given by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is a big step to strengthen the relationship between Tibet and China positively. When all the conflicts within Tibetan Buddhists are being resolved peacefully, may the Buddhadharma continues to grow wider and spread further to benefit more sentient beings. Our world with many living beings need more enlightened spiritual guides to cultivate peace and promote the teaching of kindness, equanimity and all the positive moral values heading towards the realization of world peace. May Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and both His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche live long with stable health. May His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama able to return back to Tibet soonest possible and reunite with all the Tibetans.

  30. Cindy H on Apr 29, 2018 at 2:30 am

    Finally, a positive resolution to one of the highly charged issues between China and the Tibetans (with a vested interest from the world at large). With such clear clarifications from H.H the 14th Dalai Lama (HHDL) that;

    (i) HHDL’s choice of the Panchen Lama is still very much alive (not killed off) and carrying normal education;
    (ii) multiple incarnations of one mind is possible, common and not unheard of in Tibetan Buddhism (with clear example of the 5 emanations of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo);
    (iii) Gyaincain Norbu, the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama in Tibet has received good Buddhist education and even teachings from a good teacher, implying that, “the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama is a good lama, or will become a good teacher himself in the future; that is, whatever the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama has to say or teach is valid, since he received it from a qualified source”;

it will definitely put a stop to all negative actions from both sides stemming from this issue – particularly the cessation of criticisms against either Panchen Lamas; the stopping of the persecutions from either side when it comes to believers or supporters of either one of the Panchen Lama; and the ending of this issue as a cause of divisiveness within the Sangha and Tibetan communities. It is truly something to rejoice for as not only will it end the heavy negative karma generated through those actions but it also creates the cause for future harmony and stability within the Tibetan communities.

Considering the clairvoyant powers of HHDL, who is none other than Chenrezig, logically, scenario 2 is more plausible. After all, beyond just making friends with China, the ramification of HHDL acknowledging the authenticity of Gyaincain Norbu, the Chinese-backed Panchen Lama is huge given that under Tibetan tradition, the Panchen Lama, second only in ranking to the Dalai Lama, plays a vital role in finding the next incarnation of the Dalai Lama. Hence, it is logically not something HHDL takes lightly and would be dealt with care and due diligence.

Hopefully, such encouragingly positive change is a precursor to the end of the Dorje Shugden illogical ban. Thank you Rinpoche and the blog team for this wonderful sharing.

  31. Sock Wan on Apr 29, 2018 at 1:52 am

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us this news. It sounds really crazy, at first His Holiness says the Panchen Lama recognised by the Chinese government is not the real McCoy, now he is indirectly saying the Chinese recognised Panchen Lama is not fake by citing the example of a lama who emanated into 5 different individual after he passed away.

I guess CTA has not really seen the implication of what Dalai Lama has said on the Panchen Lama issue. They were just happy to know that the Dalai Lama recognised Panchen Lama is still alive and is doing well. They probably think it is a good news because their Panchen Lama is still alive and will be able to recognise the reincarnation of Dalai Lama after this one enters into clear light. So who really is the person who ‘imprisoned’ the Dalai Lama recognised Panchen Lama? The Chinese government or maybe the CTA?? Maybe CTA is kidnapping their own Panchen Lama so they have another thing to condemn China, to gain sympathy, to make it into a cause for them to make money?

Either way, it is a good news to DS practitioners. If Dalai Lama can change his stance on the Panchen Lama, he can one day change his stance on Dorje Shugden too. Sooner or later, CTA will lose its credibility. No one will believe what they say because their statements are also baseless and without logic! Tibetan should open their eyes bigger and see how they are used for someone else’s bank account.

  32. Pastor Lim Han Nee on Apr 28, 2018 at 11:26 pm

What a wonderful about-turn by H. H. the Dalai Lama to recognize the China-backed 11th Panchen Lama!

Whatever it may be, with the Dalai Lama’s recent announcements, the present situation is that the 11th China-backed Panchen is now also recognized by the Dalai Lama. Hence there will be no confusion and the Tibetan Leadership cannot use the issue of a false Panchen Lama anymore for whatever ends. The Dalai Lama also praised his education, saying that he has been receiving teachings from a good, qualified teacher. This means whatever he teaches comes from an authentic source. At the same time, the Dharamsala-approved Panchen Lama is safe and well and is receiving a normal education. The Dalai Lama is not worried about his situation.

To me , it looks like the Dalai Lama had planned and staged the whole “play” to effect the appointment (by China)of the mind emanation as the 11th Panchen Lama.

Accepting and endorsing the China-backed Panchen Lama signifies that the next logical move the Dalai Lama is likely to make (and may this be the case) is to remove the ban on Dorje Shugden to bring greater stability and unity to the Tibetan community, so divided by the conflict over the Dorje Shugden controversy. This move will be in line with China’s new policy of officially recognizing Dorje Shugden for peace and stability and prohibiting any creation of conflict over the Shugden issue.

May all be well for the Dalai Lama to fullfil his dream to return home to Tibet soon .

  33. Joy Kam on Apr 28, 2018 at 9:52 pm

Finally, all those who have been worried, protesting and demanding to know where is the Panchen Lama can now be at peace! Yes, it is true what His Holiness said that highly attained Lamas can emanate into many different beings simultaneously. Hence, His Holiness has indicated that the China-backed Panchen Lama and the one He recognised could both be of the same mind, though one will be the main one to sit on the throne. This is not uncommon as the previous Panchen Lama also had two emanations. On top of that His Holiness also mentioned there could be many more, who knows?! Well, this clears a lot of things up about the mystery behind the China-backed Panchen Lama.

For His Holiness to suddenly say this, at this very pivotal time, is indeed very skilfull of His Holiness and I truly hope this will help build some kind of friendship with China, so that His Holiness’s wishes will come true, which is for Him to return to Tibet, China. He has been recently repeating His wish to return and that it was good for Tibet to remain with China, recognising it’s growth and development.

All who keep criticising and protesting against China should really stop if they respect, care and love His Holiness and really wishes him well. May His Holiness live long and from this one good news, may there be more such as the Dorje Shugden issue which can bring peace and unity to all Tibetans and Buddhist around the world. That would be so wonderful! Thank you Rinpoche for this brilliant news! ???

What a major turnaround in events, such a scenario was unthinkable as late as last year. Still with all the collaboration and meeting between India and China, it is indeed a very good move for the Dalai Lama to tell it as it is. Hope this move by the Dalai Lama by extending an olive branch will be well taken by the Dalai Lama, and may the Dalai Lama get his wish to return back to Tibet.

I agree very much with this article, Tibetans needs to be much more united, and not divided over so many issues for such a small population of people. May the Panchen lamas continue their great work to benefit sentient beings.

  35. Jacinta Goh on Apr 28, 2018 at 9:44 pm

    Dear Rinpoche,

By this statement, I can see the greater possibility of H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama returning back to Tibet, to His seat in Potala Palace and the possible harmony between Tibet and China. Just like the recent breakthrough news of the unification between South Korea and North Korea after decades long of Korean War. By naming the China-backed Panchen Lama as the official one, not only China will be happy but it gives hope to those Tibetan refugees a chance to go back to their homeland and be reunited with their long lost family members and friend. Why the Tibetan have to be refugees when in fact they have their homeland back in Tibet? And which seems possible now since H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama has been lenient in His speech lately( with facts and logic). Besides this, in future, there will be less conflict in the recognition of future candidate of H.H. DalaiLama too. To me, it’s a win-win situation for both, never mind religion and reincarnation. After all, Buddha’s and Bodhisattvas will always look for ways to benefit more sentient beings.

Thank you Tinpoche for sharing this news.

It is so kind of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to recognize the China-backed Panchen Lama as an emanation of the previous Panchen Lama. This is such a stunning and remarkable statement and change of events! Dalai Lama also mentions that the China-backed Panchen Lama has a very good teacher implying it will result in a very good learned student. China-backed Panchen Lama is very learned.

This recognition by His Holiness the Dalai Lama of the China-backed Panchen Lama will settle many doubts, issues, disharmony and problems. It is very kind of Dalai Lama to do this. A few years back Dorje Shugden oracle already told me personally the China-backed Panchen Lama is a real Panchen Rinpoche and there should be no doubts. Now it has come out true with the confirmation of Dalai Lama. I rejoice in having both Panchen Rinpoches. One will occupy Panchen Rinpoche’s seat (throne) as stated by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the other one will work to benefit others.

The Panchen Rinpoche Gendun Chokyi Nyima recognized by the Dalai Lama is alive and well according to Dalai Lama himself which is wonderful news. Dalai Lama said very reliable sources informed him of this. Now the many activists around the world who have campaigned for Panchen Lama Gedun Chokyi Nyima for news of him can relax and not worry about the Panchen Rinpoche Gendun Chokyi Nyima any more. He is alive and well.

China will be happy with this stunning announcement of Panchen Rinpoche by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and let’s hope China allows Dalai Lama to visit Tibet/China. Dalai Lama has mentioned many times recently he wishes to visit. Dalai Lama also wishes to not only visit but return to Tibet and live there with the Chinese and his people.

I have said many times that the Tibetan leadership must make friends with China in order to accomplish the peace and prosperity of all Tibetans. Now it is finally happening. As India gets to be friendlier with China, it is important His Holiness the Dalai Lama makes great efforts to befriend China. Tibetans around the world must support His Holiness’s wishes by not berating China and also extending a friendly hand to China. We must make friends with China during the lifetime of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in order to fulfill his wishes.

Long live His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Long live His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche (both). May there be peace and prosperity for Tibet and China and the world.

Since those days in school , I have heard of these Bermuda Triangle. Will get exicted hearing interesting stories of the mysteries of these area. The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil’s Triangle, is a region between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico in the North Atlantic Ocean. Over the past several centuries, more than 50 ships and 20 planes have disappeared in the area. Recording to some researchers that a parallel universe exists in the Bermuda Triangle region, causing a time or space warp that sucks the objects around it into a parallel universe. Interesting. The Bermuda Triangle, known for its mysterious disappearances. In recent years there have been several incidents in the Bermuda Triangle that have captured media attention. Interesting, ships and airplanes that seemed to have disappeared without a trace which has earned it the name ‘Devil’s Triangle. Since then nothing extraordinary has happened in the last 60 years. Some had mentioned that there are large deep ocean craters on the sea floor of the Bermuda Triangle. Could it be possible no one knows but there’s also others theory as well. Scientists still cannot solved these mysteries disappearance, were there the existing of aliens or something else.
Thank you Rinpoche and Cindy Hew for this great sharing.

Visiting Dorje Shugden’s grotto in Kechara Forest Retreat is a must see place . A beautiful hugh statue of Dorje Shugden was installed ,Rinpoche also placed hundreds of Holy mantra stones, around Dorje Shugden grotto, for everyone to do circumambulation around Dorje Shugden. So as visitors could able to do candles offerings as well. We Malaysians are so fortunate to learn about Dorje Shugden if not beacause of Tsem Rinpoche. Dorje Shugden has tremendous power to help us helps us in whatever way we need in our resources and in our spiritual journey. He is an emanation of an enlightened being and that he manifested in a worldly form. As an emanation of Manjushri, Dorje Shugden has the ability to open our minds to universal wisdom. There’s so many benefits when we rely on Dorje Shugden sincerely. A wish-fulfilling Shrine that will help everyone regardless of race and religion.
    Thank you Rinpoche .

Interesting blog .Chinese folklore features a rich variety of ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural creatures. According to traditional beliefs a ghost is the spirit form of a person who has died. Ghosts are typically malevolent and will cause harm to the living if provoked. Many Chinese folk beliefs about ghosts have been adopted into the mythologies. But centuries of physics research have found nothing like this exists, which is why physicists say ghosts can’t exist. And so far, there is no proof that any part of a person can continue on after death. Ghosts or spirits do exist in this world. There’s several myths still widely circulated even there’s a decrease in rituals and rites. Chinese communities all over the world use a variety of methods to protect themselves from ghosts, or whatever. Spirits and ghost are everywhere even day time its only we can’t see. As long as they are not disturbed ,its alright. Doing prayers and dedicated to them is the best choice. In Buddhism when we takes refuge in the Buddha, practises the Dharma and supports the Sangha, we are protected from many different types of spirit. Tibetan Buddhism is one of the most powerful to counter all forms of ghostly and spirit disturbances.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting blog.

It was H E Kyabje Gangchen Rinpoche that first recognised our Guru Kyabje Tsem Rinpoche as a tulku back in 1987. Lama Gangchen Tulku Rinpoche was an important Tibetan Italian lama of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. He was the last generation of lamas from the ‘old Tibet’. At a young age he was recognised as the reincarnation of the lama healer Kachen Sapen. He was a direct disciple of the greatest lamas of the Gelugpa school of the twentieth century, such as Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche, who taught him Tibetan medicine, healing methods and astrology. He worked tirelessly as a spiritual teacher and healer. He travelled tremendously throughout India, Nepal, Sikkim, Europe and finally settled in Italy. Lama Gangchen has travelled extensively ,providing healing and gave teachings worldwide. He has also led many pilgrimages to some of the most important holy places of different religious and spiritual denominations in the world. He founded numerous centres all over the world. Kyabje Gangchen Rinpoche has worked tirelessly for many decades to promote world peace and had received many awards and recognitions for his work. Lama Gangchen will remain in the hearts of all those who met him as a teacher of great love and profound wisdom.
Years back our Guru Kyabje Tsem Rinpoche did sent students to Kyabje Gangchen Rinpoche ’s centre in Albagnano, Italy with many offerings and updating projects of Kechara as well.

nteresting read of how a common nomad boy became an Oracle Lama. Reading the biography of a selfless Dorje Shugden Oracle Lama again had me understand more. Venerable Choyang Kuten Lama became a renowned oracle, who had contributed greatly in Tibet’s history. Choyang Kuten Lama was a respected oracle for a manifestation of enlightened Dharma Protectors Dorje Shugden, and was told he would be very beneficial to beings in the future. During the Chinese invasion he remained in Tibet although the situation was tense, helping countless people escape safely to India. As the situation worsened in Tibet in 1959 Kuten Lama escaped life not only as an oracle, but also contributing in various ways. Giving the Tibetan community lengthy advice and even Dharma teachings. He also served his countrymen in difficult times in Tibet and in refugee camps in India regardless of the tradition or school of Tibetan Buddhism. He raised funds for monks’ quarters in many monasteries including Gaden, Drepung as well as other Nyingma and Sakya monasteries.

Awesome life’s story and legacy of Ondor Gegeen Zanabazar the first Jebtsundamba Khutuktu of the Gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism in Mongolia and his profound impact on Mongolian Buddhism. Zanabazar a man of all trades was a prodigious sculptor, painter, architect, poet, costume designer, scholar and linguist .He was a descendant of Chingis Khan, born into a prominent Oirot Mongol family. Considered to be a living reincarnation of one of the important earlier Buddhist leaders in Mongolia. Zanabazar showed signs of advanced intelligence, linguistic abilities, and religious devotion from an early age. He is much revered for his contributions to Buddhist learning and for his reforms of Mongolian Buddhism. He was best known for his intricate and elegant Buddhist sculptures. Viewed as one of Mongolia’s most prominent historical figures, celebrated for propagating Tibetan Buddhism throughout Mongolia to this day.

Due to the Dorje Shugden controversy many practitioners are still oppressed due to their choice of religion. Yet there are complaisant, and obliging people too who barely understand the situation, poorly informed of the issue and behave in a way they knew what’s going on regarding the ban on Dorje Shugden. There are many good bits of wisdom and worthy words in this article. Well-intentioned people make mistakes, lots of them. Mistakes must be expected and being held accountable for. Oppression will still exist no matter how compassionate sharing with others. If we are willing to risk making mistakes we can still do something. We must constantly try to find out ways to use our privilege to push forward the voice of the oppressed. Do not allow ourselves to be immobilized by lack of knowledge.
Thank you Rinpoche and Sarah for this sharing.

Inspiring read of Scott Neeson a most influential person in the movie industry, walked away from Hollywood to start a charity. Left everything he had built, been famous, wealthy and living a life of luxury for the sake of those children living in the slump in Cambodia. He decided to leave Hollywood behind and moved to Cambodia and founded Cambodian Children’s Fund . It was on a trip to Phnom Penh, Scott saw hundreds of children and their families living and working on the Steung Meanchey garbage dump, one of the most toxic environments. It was a moment that changed his life, helping thousands of vulnerable children and their families escape a world of forced labour, child trafficking and desperate poverty into safety and independence. From being a self-serving person, to an extremely giving person truly inspiring. Scott has been living in Phnom Penh where his journey still captivates, inspires and bewilders people from all over the world.
Thank you Rinpoche for this inspiring post

Vairochana Shugden, pacifying form of Dorje Shugden is revered by many for his ability to purify one’s negative karma, pacify natural disasters and calamities. And is especially efficacious for overcoming illness and disease as well. Shize or Vairochana Shugden is the emanation of Dorje Shugden who embodies the enlightened activity of pacification. Shize’s practice is very effective in helping us to receive prophecies or develop clairvoyance. Shize’s practice is excellent for calming ourselves down and increasing our merits. His practice results in our minds becoming much happier and being alleviated from depressions. Wow we can also rely on Shize’s practice to overcome serious illnesses. It can also be engaged where the area, there are a lot of natural disasters. On the whole its practice has many benefits. When we do the practice correctly, with good motivation, Shize will bless and guide us.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great teachings on Shize who is a direct emanation of Dorje Shugden who is none other than the enlightened Manjushri.

Interesting article. I never thought meditation can help oneself quit smoking without consumption of medication or drugs. According to an article in The Buddhist Review, not smoking is a result of developing calm and reducing clinging through authentic Dharma practice. Mindfulness-based interventions can help people learn to pay attention to and work with negative feelings, cravings, and other symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. By focusing on our breathing the mind becomes calm and single-pointed. Many are aware of the health risks and addictive properties of nicotine that are harmful. Buddhism is very effective to inspire transformation in people. Good read of how a Yale psychiatrist bringing together neuroscience and Buddhist practices to help people overcome their addictions. Thank you Dr. Judson for the great research work.

Trode-khangsar a 400 year old Dorje Shugden Temple in Lhasa, had me having great memories. Having a privileged to visit it in May 2019,with my Dharma brothers and sisters. It such a Holy Temple with great stories behind it . Located in Lhasa, that is over 300 years old which is dedicated to the controversial protector deity Dorje Shugden. The Temple is a Gelugpa monastery of Tibetan Buddhism, built in the 17th century by the Fifth Dalai Lama. The Great 5th Dalai Lama composed a praise to Dorje Shugden and created a statue to honour and recognize him as a Dharma protector as apology. Trode Khangsar itself is now registered as a national heritage memorial. That’s awesome as more and more people will get to know about this Holy temple. Merely by looking at those fading murals and Holy statutes is a blessing for all who came to visit this Trode-khangsar. A place worth visiting.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
