Facebook’s founder now speaks Mandarin
Dear friends,
Some people just put in the effort to learn, succeed and stay ahead of the game. I find stories on people determined to make it my cup of tea. What they succeed in may not be what I want, but it’s the effort, stamina, hard work and consistency they apply to their crafts that really make me stand up and applaud.

Back in 2010, Mark Zuckerberg mentioned in an interview that he was trying to learn Mandarin, and it seemed like it was one of those things that people half-heartedly attempt to do, like “learning how to paint” or “maybe I’ll learn how to build a patio.”
But no. He committed to it. And today, he did his first public interview in fluent Mandarin — a 30-minute Q&A session with the board of Tsinghua University, which he recently joined as a member.
Learning Mandarin makes complete business sense for Zuckerberg: Facebook has been banned in China since 2009, for its “ability to spread rumors,” according to Chinese officials. In order to crack the Chinese market, and reach hundreds of millions of tech-savvy users, Zuckerberg has hired hundreds of Chinese students, established partnerships with Chinese commerce groups, and joined Tsinghua’s board, which Bloomberg describes as a “meeting ground of sorts for Western corporate higher-ups and Chinese officials.” (It also helped him win the approval of his wife’s Chinese family.)

But it’s also worth it to see the audience progress from “Oh, how cute, the foreigner learned how to say ‘hello’” to “Oh, cool, he can say a few sentences,” to “HOLY MOTHER HE CAN ACTUALLY SPEAK MANDARIN”.

It’s really amazing that Mark actually put in so much effort in learning Mandarin, as a Chinese, I must say that Mandarin is definitely not an easy languange to pick up. Even some of us have trouble speaking it. Learning Mandarin has become a huge interest in the Western countries, it’s good to see that more and more people are speaking Mandarin because it also helps to spread our cultures and traditions. I’m very sure that Mandarin will become a widely spoken language in the very near future. Mark Zuckerberg has set up a good example on showing the younger generation that if we put 102% into everything we do, we will achieve what we’ve worked hard for. I’m pretty sure that this video is going to inspire a lot of people. Thank You for sharing Rinpoche, this is definitely something new.
By so doing, the main aim is to try to capture hunreds of millions tech-savy users in the Chinese markets. Moreover, it also helps him not only to win over the trust and confidence of his wife’s Chinese family, but also the Chinese community altogether. Like Rinpoche said, “Its the effort, stamina, hardwork and consistency to make sucessful all things that counts !” Mark Zulkerberg, may you be blessed with successes all the way!
Dear Rinpoche,
It is really good to see that even an American can speak Chinese.
Some people really try their best to achieve their goal or rather what other people think the person can’t do.
This post actually hit me with surprise as it is not what I really expect as China is on the other side of the world and very few Americans can speak Chinese fluently.
In fact so rare is the chance that even though I have quite some American relative’s none of them speaks Chinese at all, which is quite unusual because my grandmother is a Chinese, and you be thinking like:what??!! Your whole family is Chinese and then just because they migrated to the United States they can’t speak Chinese??!!
Plus to make this matter sound even more incredible this person is the creator of Facebook!!!
I hope this post will encourage other people to believe that nothing is impossible. And that if you think everything is impossible look at this huge American Star that has learned Chinese.
A big cheer to Mark Zuckerberg!!!
Thank you Rinpoche for your kind sharing. With sincere determination and motivation for a good cause .He manage to achieve something others could only talk about, but without results.
His achievements at his age ,he already made himself a legend. With his commitment to reach out to those with a different medium, there will be no limit to what he could do…..
Mark Zuckerberg really showed what it meant by determination and perseverance.
Mandarin is a complex language that is different from other languages in the World and he managed to pick it up, with an amazing 30 min interview, in 5 years. Some people might give up after some failures, but he persisted.
I like the how the term::
But it’s also worth it to see the audience progress from “Oh, how cute, the foreigner learned how to say ‘hello’” to “Oh, cool, he can say a few sentences,” to “HOLY MOTHER HE CAN ACTUALLY SPEAK MANDARIN”.
was used…lol…
Thank you for an inspiring article to let everybody knows that nothing is impossible, and we can achieve if we put our hearts into it.
Through him, it proves that there is nothing impossible when we set our minds to doing something.
I believe that for Mark it was also difficult at first, but through his actions it shows all of us that anything can be done when we set out minds to accomplish something. I have always heard my friends say that it is difficult to pic up Mandarin.
He shows all the people around the world that if we put our mind and hearts to do something we can definitely do so.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this news. Fantastic to see Mark so determination it really remind us if we want we can do anything it all depends on our determination and hard work even sometimes we think is impossible but if really put in effort I think everything is possible. Very inspiring !
He is always a very inspiring young man. He is non stop learning and improving himself in anyways. We should too take him as an example.
The Mandarin Language is one of the languages of the future as the Chinese Market expands so it is no surprise that a business genius like Mark Zuckerberg would find interest in learning Mandarin Chinese. He is definite example for everyone out there as everyone can learn Chinese or at least try to.
His Mandarin is very fluent altho his accent makes it hard to dissect what he is trying to say half the time but it is still a surefire sign of effort. Although I was hoping that he would do better as he is in a relationship with a chinese lady ahah
Mark teaches everyone that nothing is impossible as long as you put enough dedication into it.
There is will, there is way…Mark have show us nothing is impossible, only whether you want to try or not. With determination, nothing cannot be done..only excuses and laziness will stop us.
Mark Zuckerberg prooves to us nothing is impossible if we put our heart in to doing it. Furthermore the loves and respect he has for Chinese Culture motivates him to learn and better himself.
Thank You Rinpoche for sharing.
Mark is an inspiration to all young people out there , with strength , determination , effort & never say die attitude IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING
