His Holiness the Dalai Lama again says it’s possible to have two Panchen Lamas

The 11th Panchen Lama Gyaincain Norbu

His Holiness the 11th Panchen Lama Gyaincain Norbu

(By Tsem Rinpoche)

Dear learned friends,

I wanted to share with you some interesting information that was recently brought to my attention. On December 28, 2018, during the 30th anniversary of His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama’s passing into clear light, His Holiness the Dalai Lama issued a video message to commemorate the occasion. In his video however, His Holiness made some statements that appear to support the legitimacy of His Holiness the 11th Panchen Lama Gyaincain Norbu that I find to be very interesting.

As you may recall, in April 2018, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was travelling and when he arrived back in Kangra Airport near Dharamsala, some reporters interviewed His Holiness. At that time, His Holiness referred to the China-enthroned Panchen Lama as the “official Panchen Lama” and spoke about an important Sakya lama by the name of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, saying that he had manifested five incarnations of Body, Speech, Mind, Quality and Activity. His Holiness was basically implying that if Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo can have five reincarnations, then it is possible for someone like the 10th Panchen Lama to have two i.e. one which His Holiness has recognised, and one which China has recognised. I have previously shared my views on this April interview here.

Now this time, in December 2018, His Holiness has once again repeated the same information during his video message on the 10th Panchen Lama’s 30th death anniversary. What His Holiness said about lamas with high attainments such as the Panchen Lama taking multiple reincarnations is logical. Enlightened beings are not restricted and they cannot be reduced to a specific form, shape or number simply because the nature of enlightenment itself transcends all these human constructs and perceptions.

The other Panchen Lama candidate (Gedhun Chokyi Nyima) who was recognised by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

The other Panchen Lama candidate (Gedhun Chokyi Nyima) who was recognised by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

What I find surprising and also encouraging about this December 2018 statement is that basically, His Holiness is showing he did NOT make a mistake in April 2018 when he first referred to the China-enthroned Panchen Lama as ‘official’ and when he described how it is possible for a lama to have more than one incarnation. It was not a slip of the tongue, His Holiness did not speak in error and His Holiness was fully cognizant and meant what he said – that is, according to the scriptures, it is very possible for there to be two Panchen Lamas. Now this is a big, big turnaround in His Holiness’s position because for over 20 years, up until very recently, His Holiness and the Tibetan exile government have insisted that Gedhun Chokyi Nyima (the boy they recognised) is the real Panchen Lama, and the Chinese government’s enthronement of the 11th Panchen Lama Gyaincain Norbu is invalid.

And the significance of this is huge because when the Dalai Lama refers to the China-enthroned Panchen Lama as ‘official’, suddenly the Chinese Panchen Lama is no longer just a fake lama appointed by the Chinese government. In other words, the Dalai Lama was giving his endorsement of the 11th Panchen Lama Gyaincain Norbu.

The two candidates for the position of the 11th Panchen Lama. (Left:) Gedhun Chokyi Nyima, who was recognised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama; (Right:) Gyaincain Norbu, who was recognised by China. Now, the Dalai Lama seems to be saying both are legitimate incarnations of His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama.

Now, the Dalai Lama seems to be saying both are legitimate incarnations of His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama.

Some people at the time claimed that the Dalai Lama was misunderstood or his comments at Kangra Airport were taken out of context but what can they say now that His Holiness has spoken about this for the second time? Their initial disbelief is understandable considering the fact His Holiness has previously said that his recognition of Gedhun Chokyi Nyima as the real 11th Panchen Lama “could not be changed”. So His Holiness’s sudden turnaround was understandably shocking to many. But in repeating his view in December 2018 that multiple reincarnations are not unusual, especially on an occasion that is specific to the Panchen Lama, His Holiness is reiterating to the world that the legitimacy of the Chinese-enthroned Panchen Lama cannot be disregarded. This is, in effect, another affirmation and endorsement of the 11th Panchen Lama Gyaincain Norbu.

Inconsistent or skilful means?

2PanchenLamas003

From an ordinary view, His Holiness’s sudden change of tune makes him appear inconsistent but that is only when viewed from an ordinary perspective which His Holiness does not act from. It is not possible for His Holiness to act from an ordinary, conventional view because he is Chenrezig. They are one and the same, and I have never deviated from my belief that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is one with the Buddha Chenrezig and there is no separation between His Holiness and the Buddha of Compassion.

So, enlightened beings are capable of performing acts that, when viewed from a conventional perspective, will seem confusing and damaging. But that is not to say that their actions are truly ordinary in nature and it is not until later when we see the beneficial results that we realise those actions were in fact great Mahasiddha activities. Take, for example, the highly attained master Ra Lotsawa who manifested this supposed contradiction. The great Ra Lotsawa propagated the Yamantaka tantra, which is today hailed as a very potent and effective practice to gain high realisations and enlightenment. However, in the process of promoting the practice back then, Ra Lotsawa engaged in countless conflicts and even had to subdue a number of opponents in psychic battles, because they might have potentially succeeded in stopping the spread of this beneficial practice. If they were successful, then not only would many people suffer from not receiving the Yamantaka practice, but those who were successful in stopping it would have accumulated immense negative karma.

Ra Lotsawa

For this, Ra Lotsawa endured harsh criticisms and condemnations because many people assumed he was spreading the practice of a demon, and his actions appeared to be against the Dharma. But after the tremendous benefit of the Yamantaka ritual became clear, people saw that in the scheme of enlightened activities, we cannot presume to know the motivation that lies behind the action. It is also for this reason that I always tell my students never to criticise His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the ban on Dorje Shugden and never to disrespect him. Because we do not have the same attainments, we cannot judge His Holiness’ reasons for his actions and it is extremely heavy negative karma when you disparage an attained being, just like those people who criticised Ra Lotsawa would have accumulated a lot of negative karma.

But like that, many people have also criticised His Holiness for openly announcing Gedhun Chokyi Nyima as the reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama. A few days after the announcement, the boy disappeared and has not been seen since and some people were not happy after that. They asked why His Holiness did not keep the boy’s identity a secret to keep him safe. In this, there are perhaps two possibilities:

(Right:) His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama Choekyi Gyaltsen, who was recognised as the mind (main) incarnation of His Holiness the 9th Panchen Lama; (Left:) Venerable Panchen Otrul Rinpoche, who was recognised as the emanation of His Holiness the 9th Panchen Lama.

(Left:) His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama Choekyi Gyaltsen, who was recognised as the Mind (main) incarnation of His Holiness the 9th Panchen Lama; (Right:) Venerable Panchen Otrul Rinpoche, who was recognised as the emanation of His Holiness the 9th Panchen Lama.

  1. There were two incarnations of the 11th Panchen Lama but one had to step aside to allow the Mind incarnation to ascend to the throne. By tradition, the Mind incarnation is the main incarnation and the one who should be enthroned. Having multiple incarnations is not unheard of and it even happened with the 10th Panchen Lama. When they were searching for the 9th Panchen Lama’s reincarnation, they found two boys. Eventually, the Mind incarnation was recognised as the 10th Panchen Lama and the other boy was enthroned as Panchen Otrul, or “emanation of Panchen”.
  2. By recognising the reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama, it drove the Chinese government to offer their support for the real Mind incarnation, Gyaincain Norbu. Then over the years, the more the Dalai Lama and his government refuted the legitimacy of Gyaincain Norbu, the more the Chinese government invested in nurturing, educating and promoting him as the legitimate 11th Panchen Lama.

His Holiness in April 2018 at Kangra Airport near Dharamsala, when he first explained the basis for how there can be two 11th Panchen Lamas. Click on image to enlarge.

So what appears like a mistake on His Holiness’s part may very well have been an extremely skilful way for His Holiness to get the Chinese government to take an interest in the real candidate, the one that Dalai Lama knew from the start was the correct Panchen Lama, the very same candidate that His Holiness now openly declares to be the official Panchen Lama. As the Dalai Lama himself has confirmed, there can be up to five reincarnations of a high lama and so by identifying (for example) the Activity incarnation, His Holiness created the causes for the Chinese government to champion and support the main Mind incarnation.

On the other hand, if the Dalai Lama had openly identified the Mind incarnation i.e. Gyaincain Norbu as the rightful candidate, the Chinese government may not have promoted him and in fact, the opposite result could have taken place. Therefore, by manifesting a ‘mistake’, the Dalai Lama created an amazingly beneficial result. By promoting the 11th Panchen Lama, the Chinese Communist Party in fact revived the Panchen Lama institution and as the result, Tibetan Buddhism was regenerated in the world’s most populous country.

Was the Dorje Shugden ban a mistake?

2PanchenLamas005

You may also ask, if His Holiness is Chenrezig then why did he make such a grave error such as banning Dorje Shugden? To answer that, it is important to look at how much the Dorje Shugden practice has grown and how much the Chinese government has promoted this ancient practice since the Dalai Lama manifested the ‘mistake’ of banning it. The more the supporters of the Dalai Lama pushed for the extinction of the Dorje Shugden practice inside the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR), the more the Chinese authorities preserved, protected and even promoted it. So the same explanation of the Dalai Lama’s Mahasiddha behaviour applies both in the Panchen Lama controversy and the Dorje Shugden conflict; both have been benefitted and grown tremendously since His Holiness implemented what appeared like wrongful actions.

If we think beyond our own mundane preferences, perceptions and narrow views, we will be able to see the wisdom in the controversies created by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. So we must be realistic and logical, and not emotional and also set aside what we perceive is right or wrong, good or bad, harmful or beneficial and look at the ultimate result. His actions may not have been pleasant in the ordinary sense but ultimately, they resulted in the spread of the Buddha’s teachings. Tibet is not the Shangri-la that the Western media likes to portray and show to everyone. It has been plagued by internal conflicts, intense rivalries, regionalism, politicking and in-fighting for centuries. But China has been on the rise and today, it is a world superpower that will get even stronger over time. So which one is more capable of preserving Buddhism and creating institutions and a culture to spread it far and wide? You think. Clearly it is China. China is the world’s most populous nation with 1.54 billion people that accounts for 18.5% of the world’s population. China yields tremendous influence today and His Holiness the Dalai Lama did what was necessary to pass the custody of Tibetan Buddhism over to the most competent entity to spread it, the powerful Chinese government with all of their might, resources and influence.

Further implications

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama.

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama.

Ironically, His Holiness’s acknowledgement of the Chinese-recognised Panchen Lama supports the Chinese government’s claims to be valid authority to recognise and enthrone high incarnate lamas. Logically speaking, this will include the 15th Dalai Lama and who has the right to name the next Dalai Lama has been hotly contested by the Chinese government and the CTA.

The Tibetans argue that recognising high lamas remains exclusively the duty and privilege of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan authorities. But when His Holiness the Dalai Lama agreed with the Chinese and endorsed their 17th Karmapa candidate Ogyen Trinley, in doing so His Holiness inferred that the Chinese government are capable of identifying the right tulkus and providing the necessary infrastructure and training for the development of high incarnate lamas. And now the Dalai Lama reiterates the same thing with the 11th Panchen Lama Gyaincain Norbu.

Again, on first glance, this appears counterproductive to the Tibetan cause but we should see beyond our own projections and look at His Holiness’s supreme compassion and wisdom. The Tibetan struggle has entered its 60th year, with no hope of reunification or a return in sight. Seeing how present global dynamics makes it nearly impossible for Tibet to come back under the CTA’s control, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is now doing the next best thing for his people, which is to bring an end to conflict and usher in a period of peace and cohabitation. One way of doing this is by recognising the Panchen Lama Gyaincain Norbu and stop protesting against him, which is something the Chinese leadership have insisted on for many years. This will help to bridge the gap between the Tibetan and Chinese leaderships. In that way, the Tibetans will be able to live peaceful lives, preserve their culture and religious tradition, and have a future to look forward to and no longer be engulfed in the Sino-Tibetan conflict. 60 years in limbo is a very long time and sorry to say but there is no way Tibetans can compete with China. Spiritually, perhaps because we have very pure and attained practitioners, but not economically or militarily which is what the world at large is interested in.

2PanchenLamas007

So realistically, it makes sense for Tibetans and the CTA to befriend the Chinese authorities and to stop antagonising them, and to work with them for a resolution. Personally, I am not interested in politics and this blog post is not meant to be read as a preference for one side or another, or any kind of political argument. All I am interested in is for the Dharma to spread, whether it is in China or outside. But the longer the Tibetan movement persists, the longer the Chinese government will be cautious towards the Tibetans and Tibetan Buddhism. They will continue to see anything Tibetan as potential instruments of separatism and that will not be very beneficial for the Dharma to spread and grow. Some people might see the Dalai Lama’s support of the Chinese-recognised Panchen Lama as an act of betrayal but if the Dalai Lama is Chenrezig, which I fully believe that he is, then he will see beyond prejudice, borders, political ideologies and labels. In Buddhism, we learn about the impermanence of all phenomena so labels like ‘countries’ and ‘borders’ and ‘politics’ have no bearing on a Bodhisattva’s mind.

Instead of some people viewing His Holiness’s act as a betrayal, they should actually admire how His Holiness displays an incredible mind that is not controlled by egoistic tendencies. Instead of being stuck on one view and refusing to budge, His Holiness does not hesitate to make pragmatic shifts according to prevailing times and the governing karma and make decisions based on what is best for the people and the Buddha’s teachings. I respect this very, very much amongst His Holiness’s myriad other perfect qualities.

An extraordinary spiritual figure

2PanchenLamas008

What is interesting is how the Dalai Lama referred to the great 10th Panchen Lama as an “extraordinary spiritual figure” and said that if he had “…lived longer, I [the Dalai Lama] am certain that it would have been truly beneficial.” This is to say that the Dalai Lama recognises that everything the 10th Panchen Lama did was to further the Buddhadharma and to benefit the Tibetan people. This is not surprising since the Panchen Lamas are believed to be incarnations of the Buddha Amitabha and viewed as the Dalai Lama’s spiritual equal. In Tibet, in terms of rank, only the Panchen Lama is qualified to rule in the Dalai Lama’s absence. The Panchen Lamas are also traditionally very close to the Dalai Lamas, and have been chiefly responsible for recognising and enthroning the Dalai Lamas’ reincarnations.

So, the Dalai Lama’s praise of the 10th Panchen Lama is significant because the 10th Panchen Lama was a devoted Dorje Shugden practitioner and composed an incredible Dorje Shugden kangsol known as Melodious Sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities. In this prayer, the 10th Panchen Lama referred to Dorje Shugden as the protector of Manjunatha’s (Lama Tsongkhapa) lineage and it is said that upon completing the composition, the 10th Panchen Lama witnessed signs confirming Dorje Shugden to be a great defender of the Buddhadharma.

The question is, why would the Dalai Lama refer to a well-known Dorje Shugden practitioner like the 10th Panchen Lama as an “extraordinary spiritual figure” unless it is a subtle way of saying that Dorje Shugden is not really bad and anti-Dharma as some people have claimed? If it is true that Dorje Shugden is the malevolent and unholy spirit of an oath-breaker then surely:

  1. The 10th Panchen Lama would not be deserving of such high praise from the Dalai Lama. How can an “extraordinary spiritual figure” be simultaneously capable of worshipping and propagating the practice of a so-called spirit? Someone who worships a spirit would not logically be praised as “spiritual”.
  2. The 10th Panchen Lama, as a so-called demon worshipper for relying on Dorje Shugden, would have broken his vows if he was really relying on a spirit. Having broken his vows, he would not have reincarnated into a 11th Panchen Lama. So if Dorje Shugden really was a spirit and negative, then the Dalai Lama should not even have recognised Gedhun Chokyi Nyima, let alone endorse Gyaincain Norbu now.

As you can see, there are many reasons for why His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s latest statement in December is so significant. I have shared my views on all these topics before but now it is interesting that His Holiness is slowly but surely manifesting views that are contrary to his earlier views on Dorje Shugden when he skilfully implemented a ban on the practice. In the same way, His Holiness also appears to be reversing his stance on the Chinese-recognised Panchen Lama. In the last 20 years or so since the Dalai Lama denounced both Dorje Shugden and the Chinese-recognised Panchen Lama, China has grown and with its coming of age into power, revived both the Dorje Shugden and Panchen Lama lineages. It is safe to say that both lineages are growing today largely due to the skilful and controversial actions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. As I mentioned before, great adepts and Bodhisattvas are known to perform deeds for reasons we cannot currently see. His Holiness Trijang Dorje Chang gave a major clue when he wrote in his seminal Dorje Shugden work, Music Delighting the Ocean of Protectors that Chenrezig and Manjushri will work together in an illusive play to spread the Buddhadharma and now it appears that this is precisely what is happening.

On the 30th death anniversary of the 10th Panchen Choekyi , Dalai Lama has mentioned about the late 10th Panchen Rinpoche who was an extraordinary spiritual figure who has worked tirelessly for the benefits of all sentient beings. While addressing the developments concerning his reincarnation, the Dalai Lama said there were instances in Tibetan Buddhist tradition where a reincarnate lama had more than one reincarnation is possible. That’s great news.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this detailed article and explanation on the Panchen Lama issue and the Dorje Shugden ban.

I rejoice that His Holiness the Dalai Lama makes it clear, about how enlightened beings can manifest into myriad forms to suit the work they need to do and the timing of it. The Dalai Lama is not inconsistent or he had slipped previously when he mentions that the mind incarnation of Panchen Lama recognized by the Chinese is the correct Mind incarnation. The Dalai Lama chose this time but probably this was the right time to recognize the correct Mind incarnation of the Panchen Lama.

The Dalai Lama could have kept silent about the Panchen Lama, if he was determined to just help the Tibetans. By recognizing the Chinese Panchen Lama as the official one, benefits all sentient beings and not just Tibetan people, so whilst the Dalai lama may be seen as short changing the Tibetans, we have to understand Chenrezig always work to benefit all sentient beings and not just one or two groups of people from a particular orientation or race.

Lately HH the 14th Dalai Lama has been toning his words China. Particularly we canx see on the incident of 11th Panchen Lama where now HH the 14th Dalai Lama is saying there is possible of multiple incarnation & referring the China enthroned as the official Panchen Lama. The Panchen issue has been hot for a long time but now His Holiness is changing his attitude and trying to be more diplomatic and wanting to be in the good book of China. Obviously we know this strategy of His Holiness is to return to Tibet. Wonder how Tibetan feels when initially they accused the Chinese adopted the Panchen Lama but now His Holiness saying that it’s no surprise for Panchen Lama to have multiple incarnation. If this was mention at the beginning of the recognition, I believe it will create less issue.

H.H. Dalai Lama is very compassion, wisdom and skilful. It is very true that with the “help’ from H.H Dalai Lama, the Panchen Lama lineage is actually well preserved by the Chinese government. If without the “scarify” from H.H Dalai Lama, Tibetan Buddhist will never florist in the west and now east.
Sometimes, thing happened not as what we see straight forward. Especially when Bodhisattva helps. It is not what we imagine the things happened exactly what we want, but, truly it manifest to benefits us in the big pictures.
By announcing Panchen Lama of China is the right person on throne, it mean so much which only I understand when I read this article. Very in dept article.

Thank you, Rinpoche for giving us such a detailed explanation on the Panchen Lama issue and the Dorje Shugden ban. It’s heartwarming that both Panchen lamas are being recognized by the current Dalai Lama. Both Panchen Lamas are very compassionate, and both are an incarnation of Dhyani Buddha Amitābha. From our side, it’s illogical for us to think that enlightened & attained beings can’t emanate in a multitude of forms simultaneously.

  6. Wai Meng Wan on Mar 23, 2019 at 11:06 am

This is very interesting what the Dalai Lama is now saying, that the Chinese backed Panchen Lama is indeed the true Mind incarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama and he is quoting Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo and also the 9th Panchen Lama, that these lama comes back as more than one incarnation.

If we remember correctly, the Communist states under the USSR, and many people living under autocratic regimes they usually relied on reading in between the lines to get to the heart of the matter. So it would not be right to box the Dalai Lama into just what he says literally.

The same can be said of what the Dalai Lama has said about the Dorje Shugden issue. remember the 5th Dalai Lama wrote praises and prayers to Dorje Shugden, the 5th was one of the most powerful Dalai Lamas of all time. The 5th Dalai Lama is of the same mind stream as the 14th Dalai Lama, many incarnations ago the 5th Dalai Lama saw the true nature of Dorje Shugden, as enlightened so it cannot be a few centuries later, and enlightened protector has regreessed to being a spirit.

Thank you, Rinpoche and the blog team on sharing with us this article. It is very logical and well researched and I am able to learn on how holy beings work with each other to benefit sentient beings. It is mind-blowing to know how well these holy beings can plan and strategize their actions so far into the future bringing maximum oceanwide benefits.

The actions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama has been erratic and unpredictable recently and he often changes his stance on issues which are totally contradictory of what he said previously. Many people start to have negative thoughts and doubts about His Holiness because of this.

We must have faith in His Holiness the Dalai Lama as he is Buddha of Compassion, Chenrezig. Whatever actions he performs will only bring benefit in the long run. One must think deep and far to be able to see the true intention of His Holiness. Nevertheless, we should not lose faith in His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Because of his actions, the Chinese Panchen Lama is able to spread BuddhaDharma effectively in China without problems. This is the skillful means of the Buddhas.

Interesting news as HH 14th Dalai Lama in the commemoration of the 30th death anniversary of the 10th Panchen Lama, spoke that there are instances in Tibetan Buddhist tradition where a reincarnate lama can took more than one manifestation. It is possible that there can be more than one emanations on the reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Rinpoche. Gedhun Chokyi Nyima, who was recognised by HH 14 th Dalai Lama and Gyaincain Norbu, who was recognised by China , HH dalai Lama said that both are legitimate incarnations of HH 10th Panchen Lama. Interesting information and this is the second time H H Dalai Lama spoke of his view. The 10th Panchen Lama is considered to be one of the most revered religious leaders in entire Tibet.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

First in April 2018 and then on December 28, 2018 the Dalai Lama has stated that there are two 11th Panchen Lamas’.
    Why??
Is he publicly surrendering to both the Chinese Government and his “Cancer”?
Is he so desperate to return and DIE AND REINCARNATE in Tibet that he is publicly accepting the Chinese gov’t’s 11th Panchen Lama in return for them allowing him to return (die) in Tibet?
If the answer is “NO” then why is his doing all of this for?
Why after all these many many years publicly stating there was only one 11th Panchen Lama and that the other is fake does he now publicly change his mind.
If the answer is “YES” and he is dying of CANCER then it explains his actions in April and then December of 2018.
If the answer is “YES” then the Dalai Lama is turning his back on the CTA and all the Tibetans who followed him to India since 1959.
Thank you Rinpoche for this most excellent article.
I pray that you live long and continue to spread the teaching of King Dorje Shugden.

Thank you Rinpoche for giving us such a logical and detailed explanation on the 2 Panchen Lamas and the Dorje Shugden ban issue. His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche has said before that in future, Dorje Shugden and the Dalai Lama might seem to be against each other but we should not lose faith in either of them. With the explanation from Rinpoche, this statement is much clearer now.

It is right that we cannot view the actions of an enlightened being with our ordinary view because what they are doing is not ordinary and the method used might not be conventional or easily understood by normal people like us. It is just like when we are 3 years old, we cannot understand why our mother doesn’t allow us to eat so much candy. But one thing for sure, what the enlightened beings do is always to benefit others.

The Dalai Lama is very compassionate and he is really humble. He is humble because fame and reputation to him are not important, he purposely manifests mistakes to promote Dorje Shugden. Even though he might lose his credibility but he doesn’t care. Many people say bad and nasty things about him but it also doesn’t affect him. He has only one goal which is to benefit others. He is such a Bodhisattva!

You may know about the two 11th Panchen Lama’s but did you know that there is a third Panchen Lama.

That correct there are three “Living” Panchen Lama’s.

We have the Dalai Lama’s 11th Panchen Lama.

We have the Chinese backed 11th Panchen Lama.

Finally we have the Dalai Lama’s 10th Panchen Lama, Panchen Otrul Rinpoche.

The Venerable Panchen Otrul (emanation) Rinpoche is still alive.

You may or may not know that there were two official 10th Panchen Lama’s.

Just like we now have two 11th Panchen Lama’s there were at one time two 10th Panchen Lama’s.

The question is when the 10th Panchen Otrul Rinpoche dies will his reincarnation be the third 11th Panchen Lama?

Here is a link to Panchen Otrul Rinpoche’s website.

    http://www.jampaling.org/about-us/rinpoche/

Could the CTA use the 10th Panchen Otrul Rinpoche to “Recognize and Enthrone” their chose for the 15th Dalai Lama thus by passing the Chinese government’s 11th Panchen Lama???

n their theoretical model, rudeness has this impact on our ability to think because it engenders negative sadness, anger. Researchers have found that common negative behaviours can spread easily and have significant consequences. The best way to avoid rude people is to meet their acts of rudeness with kindness. Exposure to neurotoxins in society is not new. Children today are raised in an environment that is much different from those days. Nowadays they are exposed to behaviours, profane language, hostilities and stress from which we adults, raised a generation ago. Studies have shown that children exposed to serious psychological trauma during childhood are at risk of suffering increased psychiatric disorders. Interesting read.
    Thank you Rinpoche.

Revisit this blog again . Reading comments in this blog Rich people have substantial assets and income, providing a sense of security and freedom from financial worries. Owning high-end cars, designer clothing and everything they want with their money. Rich people often have more time for leisure, hobbies, and travel, allowing them to pursue interests and experiences. They may live in large, luxurious homes and have or apartments, often in desirable locations and having personalized services. The fundamental difference in mindset between the rich and the poor is, the rich have understood a very simple principle money makes money. Rich people see money as an opportunity, while poor people see it as something to be earned. Poor people work hard for their money. It is the heart that makes a man rich. He is rich according to what he is, not according to what he has. Not he who has much is rich, but he who gives much. The primary difference between rich people and poor people is how they handle their wealth. My thought been rich in this world it is not what we take up, but what we give up, that makes us rich.
    Thank you for sharing Rinpoche.

Found this old post …disturbing. Having a name especially a Bar linked to Buddha to be disrespectful towards Buddhism. After much controversy the owner had it removed. The Buddha Bar located in Sabah by a young owner which opened without much thought had many people complaining. Later was forced to have its controversial name changed to ‘Peacock Garden’ and had apologised for the controversial name. As a devout Buddhist, the name ‘Buddha Bar’ which serves alcohol, is disrespectful to the revered Buddha.

Siberia, considered the heartland of shamanism inhabited by many different ethnic groups, and many of its peoples observe shamanistic. Many of the indigenous communities reclaiming their traditional spiritual and healing practices . Interesting. Siberian shamanism is often called Tengerism, involves various rituals, including drumming, chanting, trance states, and offerings to nature spirits and ancestors. This religious practice has deep roots in Siberia and Central Asia in recent years with roots in the Turkic and Mongolic cultures. Many who have been live in a remote part of Russia, have preserved their shamanic traditions due to their isolation. Many customs of Tengrism are still been practiced where they emphasizes a deep respect for nature and its various spirits, including those of the earth, water, and mountains. They do believe in the continued existence of souls and the importance of honouring their ancestors.
Thank you Rinpoche sharing this ancient religion.

Everyone of us has an unforgettable different experience, a different destination and itineraries. The journey to Shar Gaden Monastery back in 2019, making offerings to the sangha , by the Kecharians hold special moments and memories. They were on behalf of His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche and Kechara in making an offering to all 650 monks of the monastery. On this fruitful trip the Kecharians had the honour to catch a glimpse of the normally-covered holy statue of Dorje Shugden . Awesome this holy statue of Dorje Shugden was handmade by HH Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and HH Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. The team was also granted an audience with H E Domo Geshe Chocktrul Rinpoche. Having the opportunity to make offerings to the monks was indeed meritorious. Rejoice to them. Looking at those beautiful pictures paints a thousands words. Thank you Rinpoche and team for this sharing. Merely looking at it is a blessing especially the Holy Statue of Dorje Shugden.

Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly. We can’t let our failures define us. Defeat is not the worst of failures. Not to have tried is the true failure. Success is never permanent, and failure is never final. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness .Sometimes just reminding ourselves of the temporality of failure enables us to forge ahead and stay focus looking forward . Failure isn’t something many of us can handle gracefully. And even though we know it’s a common human condition, figuring out how to stay motivated in the face of failure .
Thank you Rinpoche for this profound teachings.

Finally HH Dalai Lama said we can practice Dorje Shugden. After all these years of deep frustration felt by the Tibetan people. They who lack religious freedom been denied and been exploited in all sectors of society. More than 60 years the Tibetan leadership has cause the sufferings of those in exile who had propitiate Dorje Shugden. Dalai Lama did reiterated although he recommended not worshipping Dorje Shugden as it is a personal choice and freedom. Interesting read.

Working in a private hospital before ,having witnessed many personal tragedies faced by the living and dying patients. Many of these poor people faced their death with fear, with misery and pain before departing this world. With the images of all these in my mind, on occasion feeling sad and grieve at times when those we have cared .But nonetheless we should recognise certain truths. All of us are going to leave this world at one time and leaving those we love. In the teaching of the Buddha, all of us will pass away eventually as a part in the natural process of birth, old-age and death and that we should always keep in mind the impermanence of life. Along the journey of life, we are reminded of our own inevitable ends in waiting and everything is a blip of transience and impermanent. Be responsible, good and positive for ourselves and towards others. This leads to calmness, happiness and an outlook which contributes to a calm and controlled mind at the time of death. We have to remind ourselves the importance of rebirth and taking time to prepare for their own demise before its too late.To cultivate the good karma, our good actions are an excellent way prepare for our death. Having lead a responsible and compassionate life and have no regrets when death approaches enables us to surrender without a struggle. The life that we all cherish and wish to hold on. We are doomed to the endless cycles of life and death, we should learn and practices Dharma teachings .We are given a chance in life and choice to determine our future, to determine where we will go for rebirth. Spend our time on earth wisely before its too late.
Thank you Rinpoche for this great sharing.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is considered the incarnation of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and therefore he is an enlightened being. H H Dalai Lama has strongly discouraged the practice of Dorje Shugden worship within Tibetan Buddhism. Dorje Shugden is a prominent deity in the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. Many highly attained Lamas have been relying on this Powerful Protector for centuries and even Dalai lama previously do propitiate Dorje Shugden . It cannot be wrong and its wrong to view it as a form of “spirit worship”. All his previous 9 reincarnations practiced with devotion, all of the Dalai Lamas teachers practiced Dorje Shugdan as well . The Tibetan community is torn over this issue and this has been the cause of much suffering and unnecessary prejudice. Dalai Lama is without doubt an enlightened being that surely cannot be tricked by a spirit. Dalai Lama did composed a praise to Dorje Shugden while at Dungkar Monastery . Interesting article , may more people read this and to understand better regarding this controversy. In 2020, the Dalai Lama made a Uturn by saying we can practice Dorje Shugden . Thats’ wonderful and relief for many practitioners.

Butön Rinchen Drup, 11th Abbot of Shalu Monastery, was a 14th-century Sakya master and Tibetan Buddhist leader. Butön Rinchen Drup a Tibetan great scholar and translator, known for systematizing the Tibetan Buddhist canon containing the Indian scriptures based on the spoken words of the Buddha. He also compiled the Tangyur collection that contains the Indian and Tibetan commentaries of these teachings. He wrote a famous text, the History of Buddhism in India and Tibet, which many Tibetan scholars utilize in their study till today. He remains to this day as one of the most important Tibetan historians and Buddhist writers in the history of Buddhism and Tibet. He was not merely a capable administrator but he is remembered to this very day as a prodigious scholar and writer and is Tibet’s most celebrated historian. After his death he strongly influenced the development of esoteric studies and psychic training in Tibet for centuries. Interesting biography of a great scholar.

nspiring a Tibetan Parliament representing the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, spoke bravely for the need to stop discriminating against Dorje Shugden practitioners. Tenpa Yarphel, a Tibetan MP speaking confidently for the sake of Tibetan unity. Tibetans in exile have also been particularly divided over the issue of the two Karmapas and the very damaging Dorje Shugden conflict. For someone who dare to speak for the sake of peace with the intention of moving forward to a better future. Tenpa Yarphel spoke up against the continuing discrimination of people based on their beliefs. For over more than 20 years those Tibetans especially those Dorje Shugden practitioners suffered from the lack of employment opportunities to discrimination. A wise decision of Tenpa Yarphel speaking up the truth of the Tibetan sufferings. They are not allowed in Tibetan hospitals, or apply jobs in the Tibetan civil service or even entering shop or hotels and so on. Tenpa Yarphel’s statement, paints a thousand words of reality. A big hand applaud to this brave man .

Losar is the Tibetan New Year, a festival that marks the beginning of the year on the Tibetan calendar. It is celebrated among the Tibetan community all over the world recently. Losar marks the beginning of the Tibetan calendar year a time for family gatherings, religious ceremonies, and feasting because of its long history and rich cultural traditions. The celebrations will last for 15 days whereby the first three days being the most important day for them and widely celebrated festival on the Tibetan calendar. During theTibetan New Year, Panglung Oracles are known to enter a trance state, of the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. This practice is considered a significant part of the Losar celebrations within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, providing guidance and blessings to those seeking their wisdom. People often consult the Panglung oracles to receive predictions, advice, and blessings for the coming year. Dorje Shugden will also give teachings while in trance of an oracle.
Reading this old blog again where back in 2022, the Great Protector Dorje Shugden gave an inportant message to everyone of us. We should take it seriously practising good virtues, such as prostrating ,making offerings and practise the holy Dharma. Everyone should always be kind-hearted and doing our best to cultivate loving-kindness, compassion and bodhicitta.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this precious advices.

Pemayangtse Monastery is a Buddhist monastery in Sikkim, India that is part of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. It is one of the oldest and most famous monasteries in Sikkim. It is home to Dorje Shugden, a spirit in Tibetan tradition. The monastery is one of the oldest and most famous in Sikkim. Pemayangtse Monastery in Sikkim, founded by Lhatsun Namkha Jigme of the Nyingma tradition. One of the earliest modern academic references to Dorje Shugden. Stunning sculptures, paintings and ancient scrolls can be found in the Monastery. Interesting story behind this monastery,as described by Lieutenant Colonel Laurence Austine Waddell a British explorer, collector and author. Through the years of travelling in India, Sikkim and areas on the borders of Nepal and Tibet, after doing research on Tibetan Buddhist religious practices he made a stunning discovery. He discovered that Dorje Shugden existence in the Nyingma monastery as written in his book, which confirmed that Dorje Shugden been worshipped in the Nyingma as well . Not only worshipped in the Gelug lineage but held prominence in the Nyingma tradition too. Interesting read.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story. What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer

Hence, happy to see many families gathered together to usher the Lunar New Year at Kechara Penang and also appreciation for the guests that came from afar for this joyous occasion. By Jacinta
