Huffington Post: Shugden Acolytes Decry Ostracism Within Buddhist Ranks
Since it was launched in 2005, Huffington Post, or HuffPost as it is affectionately nicknamed, has developed a reputation for serious journalism that is easily digestible. Named for its founder Ariana Huffington, the online-only liberal publication offers news, satire, as well as opinion pieces.
Their original content, lauded for its fair and unbiased approach, covers politics, business, entertainment, the environment, technology, lifestyle, women’s interests and comedy. With its award-winning material spanning the breadth of human interest and experience, in 2012, Huffington Post became the first commercially-run digital media enterprise in the United States to win a Pulitzer Prize.
That Huffington Post would cover the Dorje Shugden issue therefore, was only a matter of time. On 14 November 2017, they did just that, publishing an extensive and balanced piece on the segregation and discrimination against Dorje Shugden practitioners which I have reproduced below for you.
The Huffington Post article spoke about the sufferings that Dorje Shugden practitioners have had to endure for the last 20 years since the ban was first forcibly imposed in 1996. It covered the hypocrisy of the ban, the history and origins of Dorje Shugden practice, and cited credible sources as evidence of a ban.
Coverage was also given to prominent parties on both sides of the divide: on one side is His Holiness the Dalai Lama who imposed the ban, and on the other side are Dorje Shugden advocates such as His Eminence Geshe Kelsang Gyatso and myself who are resisting the immense pressure and discrimination to give up the practice that our gurus passed down to us.
I had no idea that this article was being written. I was not contacted, not asked for an interview or asked for any comments, and then it was published and my students alerted me to it. So it was a very, very pleasant and encouraging surprise to read such balanced coverage from such a reputable news website.
In fact, the most pleasant surprise is the fact that for the first time in nearly a decade, a mainstream media agency did not insist upon and uphold the false accusation that Dorje Shugden practitioners have some kind of connection with China. The Huffington Post article did not engage in confirmation bias, and they did not search for evidence to confirm this false accusation, which has no basis in fact. A lot of room was instead given to the truth, which is that Dorje Shugden practitioners have no connection with China. We do not fight against the ban to please China but for our religious freedoms, to keep the commitments we have received from our teachers.
In the 21st century, is it too much to ask to be able to practice without being vilified, humiliated, discriminated against, segregated, spat upon, and verbally abused and physically attacked? Huffington Post clearly thinks that it is not too much to ask for this freedom.
For too long, the public relations machine of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA or Tibetan leadership) has dictated how Dorje Shugden practitioners should be viewed and treated. For a long time, we have not been in control of how people view us, not that it matters but such a view creates a lot of unnecessary division, disharmony and disunity. It is definitely time that this changes and so I really hope that there will be more of such coverage like Huffington Post’s in the future, to provide a different narrative in the lives of Dorje Shugden practitioners.
I would like to thank Huffington Post for this piece which was encouraging to read. Huffington post has provided a voice for those who have suffered in silence for decades now and deserve to be heard. Dorje Shugden practitioners everywhere should read, spread and share this news.

Shugden Acolytes Decry Ostracism Within Buddhist Ranks
Martin Desai, Contributor | Journalist and financial investigator | 11/14/2017 12:45 pm ET
The 14th Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, has for decades travelled the globe with a message of peace, love and compassion that has won him countless followers and admirers, made him one of the most recognised and respected religious leaders on the planet and earned him the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize.
“Love, kindness, compassion and tolerance are qualities common to all the great religions,” he wrote on his Facebook page in October.
He has brought his message to Christian, Muslim and Jewish leaders, including Catholic Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, and recently spoke on behalf of the Rohingya Muslims as they suffer fierce persecution in their largely Buddhist Myanmar home, sometimes at the hands of Buddhist monks.
But the Dalai Lama’s tolerance does not appear to extend to devotees of Dorje Shugden, a controversial Buddhist deity to whom the Dalai Lama himself has admitted that he once used to offer prayers before declaring it to be a malign spirit. Such appears to be his aversion to Shugden practitioners that he has publicly asked them not to attend spiritual gatherings where he is present.
He has since 1976 affirmed on various occasions that the practice of paying devotion to Dorje Shugden shortens the life of the Dalai Lama, encourages sectarianism among Buddhists and represents a “danger to the cause of Tibet”. Through such comments, Tibet’s de facto spiritual leader effectively issued a prohibition against the practice, leading to ostracism of its practitioners by the broader Tibetan Buddhist community.
Some Shugden practitioners say this is akin to the Pope threatening excommunication for those who promote devotion to the Virgin Mary or Saint Francis. Such high-handed action would meet with fierce resistance both from individuals and from orders such as the Franciscans and the Marists. All would no doubt still consider themselves practising Catholics despite their apparent disobedience to a figure who, in Catholic doctrine, is God’s representative on earth.
A Question of Emphasis
The Dorje Shugden deity is considered by some to be one of several protectors of the “Geluk”, or “yellow hat” school of Tibetan Buddhism to which the Dalai Lamas belong and whose adherents are called “Gelukpas”. Critics say worship of the deity fosters divisions among the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism, all of which share the same fundamental philosophy, and whose differences lie mainly in the emphasis they place on different Buddhist scriptures.
“The hub of the dispute is contrasting views on sectarianism and the correct path for Yellow Hat Buddhism,”[1] wrote M.A. Aldrich in a December 2016 article in The Diplomat. “The Shugden followers insist upon an aggressive purge of heterodox forms of Tibetan Buddhism while the Dalai Lama has called for non-sectarian cooperation among all branches of Tibet’s religions.”
Shugden practitioners have worshipped among “Yellow Hat” Buddhists for some 350 years. If they have pursued an “aggressive purge” of other forms of Buddhism, as their accusers say, how is it that all four main schools of Buddhism generally flourished over such an extended period?
Moreover, given that Shugden devotion was an accepted practice for most of this period, what has changed since the Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 following a failed uprising against Chinese Rule?
“The Dalai Lama believes that aggressive sectarianism threatens Tibetan unity,” wrote Aldrich. “He has decreed that while the followers of Dorje Shugden may continue to worship the deity, his own followers should not permit devotees of Shugden to be initiated into the Kalachakra.”[2] The Kalachakra is a complex system of philosophy and meditation in Tantric Buddhism and exclusion from it is seen by many as a heavy penalty.
While the Dalai Lama has said his statements do not amount to a ban on the practice, the Central Tibetan Authority – the Tibetan government in exile in India – taking its lead from the spiritual leader – has made a number of moves to ostracise Shugden practitioners. A 1996 CTA resolution includes a clause that says: “if individual citizens propitiate Shugden, it will harm the common interest of Tibet, the life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and strengthen the spirits that are against the religion.”
Other branches of the exiled government quickly fell into line following this resolution. For example, a 1996 directive from the CTA’s department of health said
“if there is anyone who worships Dorje Shugden, they should repent the past and stop worshipping. They must submit a declaration that they will not worship in the future.”
Demonizing Worshippers
Jamyang Norbu, a Tibetan political activist who favours the independence of the region rather than greater autonomy under the Chinese government, says that while the Dalai Lama has every right to object to Shugden practices on theological grounds, Buddhists should be free in their devotional practices.
“The trouble is that the Tibetan government has been inducted to implement the Dalai Lama’s proscription of Shugden worship,”[3] wrote Norbu. “The Tibetan government claims it has not issued any orders or appeals to people to harass or fight Shugden worshippers. Yet it has produced and distributed literature and videos demonizing Shugden worshippers.”
Norbu is however highly critical of those vocal Shugden activists who have picketed several of the Dalai Lama’s public appearances, attempting to drown out his words, chanting abuse while making no effort to engage into dialogue. He has said, nonetheless, that more effort could be made to reach an understanding with those Shugden acolytes who continue to accept the Dalai Lama as their spiritual leader.
One such is Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, the Malaysian based ‘spiritual advisor to Kechara’ Buddhist Temple and Shugden practitioner, who earlier this year said he was “ecstatic” about what he understood to be a perceived softening of the Dalai Lama’s stance vis-à-vis Shugden practitioners.
A number of Shugden centres, including Kechara, say they are not at all active in the autonomy debate, nor have they any interest in overtures from China.
Tsem Tulku Rinpoche says he has for years resisted the scapegoating of the Shugden religious practice, seeking a peaceful end to a conflict which has already weakened the beleaguered community of Tibetan refugees and their Tibetan government in exile. Moreover, supporters say, the exclusion of Shugden practitioners is not compliant with the Tibetan constitution, nor with Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which embodies the concept of religious freedom.
Another prominent Shugden exponent to come under pressure is Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, spiritual leader of the New Kadampa Tradition. Supporters maintain these two leaders have worked tirelessly spread of the Geluk tradition worldwide. But while the New Kadampa Tradition has protested the Dalai Lama vociferously, Tsem Tulku’s Kechara followers have sought to avoid this conflict.
Nonetheless, the vilification of their practice continues. In late 2016, an official letter from the Tashi Dargyeling Monastery – as translated on a Shugden-leaning website – appeared to encourage measures against Shugden practitioners which bear all the hallmarks of religious persecution. Those who continue to worship the deity, or simply maintain relationships with practitioners, are told that the monks of the monastery will not perform prayers in their homes or funeral rights for members of their household – somewhat equivalent to being excommunicated from the Catholic Church.
Earlier in 2016, a Monastic University in the Tibetan exile community said it had introduced an identity badge system for its monks to indicate that they were not “Dolgyal propitiating monks”. Dolgyal is a derogatory term used for Shugden devotees. Monks who practiced devotion to Dorje Shugden were not welcome at the monastic university, it was understood.
More alarming still, there have also been widespread reports of beatings, vandalism and death threats aimed at practitioners, many of whom say they have been forced to the margins of their own communities, or even to leave them altogether.
A Chinese Angle
“There’s a lot of passion around this (issue) from Shugden practitioners, and the Chinese have fostered this Shugden worship as a way to split Tibetans,” said Kelley Currie, a senior State Department advisor on Asia and Tibet from 2007 to 2009, told Reuters in a December 2015 report.[4]
Currie has previously worked for the International Campaign for Tibet, an advocacy group promoting human rights for Tibetans.
In recent years, Dorje Shugden practitioners have been increasingly denounced as stooges of China who support Beijing rule in Tibet. They are accused of allowing China to exploit divisions among Tibetan Buddhists, or worse, accepting Chinese backing to foment discord among the exiled Tibetan community.
Their most virulent opponents have launched a series of attacks via social media, including a large number of heavily-worded insults and threats on Twitter, Facebook and elsewhere, couched in an occasionally violent language rarely associated with Buddhism. Shugden proponents who discuss their religious practices online say they risk a co-ordinated deluge of often ad hominem attacks.
The timeline of events also indicates that it was the edicts and pronouncements against the Shugden practice which created the discord within the Buddhist ranks in the first place. If Shugden acolytes were allowed to continue their worship practices unmolested by other factions within the Buddhist community, as they have done freely for 350 years, there would arguably be no schism to exploit.
In effect it appears it was only after the Dalai Lama spoke against the practice that the Chinese government made its first tentative approaches to Shugden practitioners, possibly sensing an opportunity to exploit the rift and weaken the push for Tibetan autonomy.
Even so, China isn’t involved in the demonstrations, said Sonam Rinchen, a U.S. based Tibetan national, as quoted in the Reuters piece. “I am sure they are pleased, but we do not protest to please China,” he said. “We are interested in getting our religious freedom back.”[5]

Addendum
Central Tibetan Administration’s Website
Below is a screenshot of Tibet.net, which is the Tibetan leadership’s website. In it, they have a section with “information” about Dorje Shugden which is designed to promote hatred, negativity and direct vulgarities towards Shugden practitioners. What kind of democratic leadership has a section like this on their site targeting a religious group? Imagine the uproar there would be if the American or Canadian, or any other democratic government had sections like this on their site for the public!
His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Website
This is a screenshot of DalaiLama.com which is the official website of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. When this section exists on His Holiness’ website, it actually emboldens Tibetans to discriminate against and segregate Shugden practitioners. This section is basically the Dalai Lama’s ‘endorsement’ of such behaviour; when anti-Shugden individuals see this, they think it is okay to segregate against the practice “because the Dalai Lama said so”. I don’t think the Dalai Lama would agree with this but the webmaster and shadow writers behind his website should not put this type of anti-Dorje Shugden section which subscribes to discrimination against a group because of religion. In the 21st century, this is not fitting of a great spiritual leader like His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Do not discriminate tolerate; is the way to go.
If the Dorje Shugden ban is just advice and not a ban, then why is a section like this necessary on any website?
Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile’s Resolution Stating Government Employees Should Not Rely on Dorje Shugden
In 1996, the Tibetan leadership passed a resolution stating that all departments (and ergo their employees) should not rely on Dorje Shugden (point 8). The resolution also stated that individuals who do engage in its worship will harm the Dalai Lama’s life and the so-called Tibetan cause. That being the case, how will anyone within the Tibetan settlements and government be able to openly engage in Dorje Shugden practice after that, if their worship has been widely labelled as anti-Dalai Lama, anti-CTA and treasonous? To openly practice after that will leave them open to criticism, vulgarities, harassment and discrimination, as Dorje Shugden practitioners have been for the last 20 years. So they will be left with three options: to give up the practice (which many will not do), to practice secretly, or to give up their jobs.
Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile’s Resolution Naming Dorje Shugden Practitioners as Criminals in History
This is a screenshot of tibet.net, the Central Tibetan Administration’s official website, which shows the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile’s unanimous resolution dated 17 March 2014 naming Dorje Shugden practitioners as criminals in history (point 3, paragraph 2).
VIDEO: Dalai Lama bans Dorje Shugden practice
and expels monks
His Holiness the Dalai Lama was recorded in Drepung Monastery in 2008 clearly stating that those who refused to give up their Dorje Shugden practice should be expelled from the monasteries. His Holiness even said that if people found it difficult to fulfill this instruction, that they should say that the Dalai Lama told them to expel Dorje Shugden practitioners.
My question is this: if giving up Dorje Shugden practice is just advice, and it is up to us who we wish to rely on, then why are there such heavy repercussions for people who choose to keep the practice? As a result of His Holiness saying this, thousands of Shugden monks were expelled from the monasteries, and were forced to set up their own monasteries where they would be able to continue their Dorje Shugden practice.
VIDEO: Gaden Monastery Attacked
Since the inception of the Dorje Shugden ban 20 years ago, the CTA (Central Tibetan Administration) continues to organize a hateful campaign against Dorje Shugden practitioners. In doing so, the Tibetan leadership has gone against the very core teachings of His Holiness the Dalai Lama on compassion and tolerance and thereby, misled the world over the nature of their activities. The Tibetan leadership pursues huge sponsorship and financial aid from the West in order to run its operations but they actually channel these funds towards campaigns that suppresses religious freedom within the Tibetan communities through various means to instigate violent suppression against Dorje Shugden practitioners.
This video footage shows clearly how Dorje Shugden practitioners have lived their lives in fear for the last 20 years due to the ban on Dorje Shugden. Although the Tibetan leadership and supporters have continued to use various violent and underhanded means to segregate and discriminate Dorje Shugden practitioners, the practitioners themselves have not fought back. Instead, they continue to uphold their peaceful reliance on their Dorje Shugden lineage lamas and especially the practices and teachings they have received in relations to the protector deity. The main part of the video was filmed in 2000 and it shows 3,000 lay and ordained Tibetans heading towards Gaden Shartse Monastery in South India in order to riot against a group of Dorje Shugden practitioners.

VIDEO: France 24 reports on the Dorje Shugden issue
France 24 is a reputable news network based in France, known for their objective reporting style. They covered the Dorje Shugden issue extensively, surely a reflection of the seriousness of the issue for them to devote so much airtime to it. In their video, France 24 captured on film the discrimination against a Dorje Shugden monk.
VIDEO: Al Jazeera reports on the Dorje Shugden issue
Based in the Middle East, Al Jazeera was formed in response to the heavy influence of Western culture on the media. They are known to cover controversial topics that other news agencies may be reluctant to cover, and provide hard-hitting, objective coverage of current affairs.
Evidence of the Ban
Over the years, my students have collected evidence of the ban against Dorje Shugden. Personally, I find it quite disappointing and sad that they have been able to collect so much evidence because it just goes to show how widespread and pervasive this ban has become. As you can see below, notices banning Dorje Shugden practitioners can be found just about anywhere in the Tibetan settlements. Whether a Dorje Shugden person is trying to access healthcare or enter a restaurant, or try to buy something from a shop, they are banned everywhere and refused service. How is this just ‘advice’ when the repercussions of practising Dorje Shugden are so violent inside the Tibetan communities and settlements?

Dear friends,
Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.
You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.
Enclosed are the prayers in English, Chinese and Tibetan.
May you be safe, protected and blessed.

Divination (‘mo’) Text by Dorje Shugden
This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.
The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

For the first time available, Dorje Shugden and his entourage of 32 asssistants of his mandala.
Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.
Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-
1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-
– Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
– Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
– Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
– Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
– Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.
2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.
3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokitesvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.
4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.
5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.
6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.
7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.
These sacred images are available on *Vajrasecrets. They are made of high quality alloy and are one of a kind. They are based on the lineage of His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche’s monastery, Tashilhunpo in Shigatse, Tibet. In fact, the iconography of these statues are based on detailed photographs taken by H. E. Tsem Rinpoche during a trip to Tashilhunpo’s protector chapel. These are based exactly as the 10th Panchen Lama’s personal collection.

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama
Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.
After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.
The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.
His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.
Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.
Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.
The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

This elderly & innocent monk in India was brutally attacked, find out why. Shocking – https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/?p=163953
“If the Dalai Lama, if His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by Dorje Shugden, then we might as well not practice Buddhism anymore. If His Holiness the Dalai Lama can have his life shortened by a so-called evil spirit, any evil spirit, then can he be Avalokiteshvara? So on one hand you say, we say, I say, everybody says, he is Avalokiteshvara; on the other hand you’re saying that he can be harmed by an evil spirit… Which one is it? Can he be harmed by an evil spirit or is he Avalokiteshvara? Do you think Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Tara all take refuge in something else to protect themselves from Dorje Shugden? How illogical is that? How illogical of people to say His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by an evil spirit, any evil spirit or “Dorje Shugden” evil spirit. How is that possible?” – Tsem Tulku Rinpoche

This video condensed and made simple the history of the Dorje Shugden ban and the sufferings Dorje Shugden people experienced and continue to experience for 20 years. The video also laid out and reveal the truth and facts that Dorje Shugden was the Protector who advised His Holiness the Dalai Lama to flee to India and hence His Holiness’ life is saved. There is no religious freedom for the Dorje Shugden people worldwide because of the Dorje Shugden ban executed by the Central Tibetan Administration. We are, until today being discriminated and persecuted for simply practising our choice of religion and this is the truth.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gis2vaURT40
Thanks for Rinpoche ‘s sharing. Really good news the Huffington Post would cover the Dorje Shugden issue . On 14 November 2017, they have published an extensive and balanced piece on the segregation and discrimination against Dorje Shugden practitioners.
It let people to know the truth and be awareness the suffering of the Dorje Shugden practitioners. May such awareness can be continued and discrimination can be ceased as soon as possible.
In this video, a nice couple is being targeted and attacked just because they are pagan faith. They are Wiccan and the nice lady is a practising elemental witch, but they are being perceived to be bad people and hurting children, although none of that is true and they are being attacked for their faith. This is also another example of what Dorje Shugden people go through especially in Dharamsala, India because the Tibetan Leadership has put a notice on their official site stating that Shugden practitioners are bad and demon worshippers which is completely untrue. Hence, daily Shugden practitioners are being persecuted and if you are not there in Dharamsala, you get online abuse like what H.E. Tsem Rinpoche receives daily as well as myself and other Kecharians who are openly practising what our Guru gave us.
Is this kind of discrimination and violence acceptable in this day and age when there is religious freedom? Why are these people allowed to do this crime? Why is the Tibetan Leadership acting like a dictatorship and attacking others of a different faith? They do it indirectly and encourage this hatred because they do nothing, say nothing and have a page talking against Shugden on their official website. That is a clear indication there is a ban and discrimination against Shugden people.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516798075.mp4
In this video is a police officer being discriminated for his Wiccan religion and he is going to sue the state because he was told it was mandatory for him to attend a Christian gathering. There is supposed to be freedom of religion, so why is it okay for a group of people to force other people to join, pray and believe their religion? And what gives them the authority to tell people what to believe or not to believe in? This is a dictatorship type of leadership, not a democratic one at all. And this is exactly the same question I would like to ask the Tibetan Leadership and those who come on our social media wall to abuse us and call us names and vulgarities because we practice Dorje Shugden. Watch what the guy says in the video.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516798026.mp4
I’ve just attached a video here on a lady reading about “the Persecution of Women in Witchcraft”. It is stated that in the early 16th century there was a mass execution of witchcraft. In the year 1515 in Geneva Switzerland, they burned 500 witches at the stake. In 1526, 1000 witches in Italy were executed. In 1571 witch hunt spreads across France. In total it is estimated from 1500 – 1600, there were 50 – 80,000 suspected witches executed.
Religious persecution in any way is wrong, look at how many lives were taken because people decide to discriminate on others and persecute them just because they do not follow your belief system. This is exactly what Dorje Shugden practitioners are facing today as well when the Tibetan leadership keeps on harping and silently encouraging their people to discriminate and ostracised Shugden practitioners which we can see from all the above online abuse. Is this okay in this 21st century, is this what H.H. the Dalai Lama advocates – religious tolerance? I think not.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516797992.mp4
Everyone has rights to practise what they like. Those who practise witchcraft has their rights to practise but they are not allowed to voice out their concerns, fearing to be treated differently just like most Dorje Shugden people.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516798931.mp4
Taken away the rights to purchase items for witchcraft is the same as burning the witch for practising their religion. It is just a manifestation of different types of witch hunt and banning the sale of certain items is the same as stopping them from practising a certain ritual that is the same as taking their rights away. This scenario is the same as what Dorje Shugden people face also.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516798088.mp4
This is another proof of discrimination that is similar to Dorje Shugden people. The witchcraft people do not get to purchase their religious practise items online because there is no law that protects their rights on what they can purchase and what not they cannot.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516797979.mp4
Despite the founding fathers’ effort to give Americans religious freedom, the Wiccans and Pagans are denied their right, such as to have Chaplains to perform ceremonies, receiving books and materials and so on in prison. It is not fair and this is the kind of discrimination Dorje Shugden practitioners faces. Tibetans in exile are supposed to be ruled under democracy, but they are denied their rights of religious freedom. This is not fair.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516797960.mp4
This is another example of religious discrimination. Wicca was accused to be related to Satan, which is not true. Wiccans are being rejected from being able to participate in the governmental system as they are not a member of the mainstream Judeo-Christian religion.Similarly, Dorje Shugden is accused to be a demon/ evil spirit, and that Shugden practitioners are not allowed to participate in the system – they cannot work in governmental jobs, they are denied travel documents, they are not denied medical treatment, and the members of the public are advised to not be associated with them.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516797909.mp4
This video shows how Christians in Nigeria face enormous persecution, similar to what Dorje Shugden people are facing.Just like what Bishop Mike Moses said in the video, they are being persecuted “in your own country, your own community”, and that’s worse than being persecuted by others.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516797726.mp4
Pagan man talks about freedom of religion choices
Religious freedom should be applicable to all including Pagan practitioners and atheists
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516796937.mp4
This man’s dilemma is similar to what Dorje Shugden practitioners are experiencing. Even if the Dalai Lama has discouraged Dorje Shugden practice, those who choose to retain their practice should still have the right to do so without being penalized, without being discriminated, abused, attacked and harassed day in day out. Religious Freedom is every human’s right and should be respected, when the Tibetan Leadership stay silent when Shugden practitioners are being attacked, it is clear they condone it. So how can Tibetan Leadership claim to be democratic when they are not and how can they point the finger and blame others for human rights abuse when they do so themselves with their very own people? Illogical, injustice and unacceptable in this day and age!
Oklahoma Pagan suffer Discrimination
A lady witch suffers discrimination after being found out that she is a witch.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516796905.mp4
This is similar to what Dorje Shugden practitioners are experiencing in Tibetan settlements. Once they are found out that they are a Dorje Shugden practitioner, they would be a target for discrimination (e.g., denied service in the public places), some even target attacked. And if you are not in Dharamsala, you will be targeted and attacked online with vulgarities and all kinds of derogatory slurs.
Messianic Jews Persecuted
In 2005, a large number of protestors crashed the Messianic Jews Christmas eve celebration and told them to go back to Gaza.
https://video.tsemtulku.com/chat-videos/chat-1516796866.mp4
Any form of discrimination is wrong and should be discouraged and stopped. How can we discriminate people base on their religion, just because we dislike their religion? This is pure prejudice and hatred, so how can this be considered good and right for those executing such persecution? And this is exactly the same mentality the Tibetan Leadership has and encourage their people to attack Shugden practitioners. This is the kind of hatred that cause division, war, and suffering. How can one religion claim to be better than the other in the name of “God”? How can this be considered compassion?
What a very clearly explained and well written article by Martin Desai. One can see the thought and detailed research done for this article and for someone to come up with such a clear conclusion and publish it in a well known journalistist post, is something that all Dorge Shudgen practictioners will all rejoice about. To highlight this unfair and unjust treatment will create the much needed attention to address this matter and work towards the lifting of the ban. Thank you Huffington Post , and thank you Rinpoche for sharing this with us.
Thank you Huffington Post for highlighting of the sufferings that Dorje Shugden practitioners for the past 20 years. To us and many other practitioners, all around the world ,it’s a joyful and great news. The discrimination and segregation of Shugden ‘s suffering and pain finally reveal by a recognised media agency the first time since a decade. With these great news been mentioned about the truth facts of the ban , the history of Dorje Shugden and so forth. It such a relief and happy reading it.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing these great news and thank you to Martin Desai for covering the Dorje Shugden issues . May more people aware of the situation and may H.H Dalai Lama please lift the ban
Thank you to Huffington Post for covering the issue of Dorje Shugden and recognising the advocacy of H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for a peaceful end to the conflict. Well written and unbiased. Finally, we have an international media putting this into limelight and hope more media will follow the footstep.
The 14th Dalai Lama always preaches about compassion, kindness, love and tolerance but this is not reflecting in his actions towards Dorje Shugden practitioners. The ban is causing disharmony, hatred, anger and segregation. How could the Dalai Lama who is respected figure and even awarded the Nobel Peace Prize could do such a thing and especially when he is regarded as the emanation of Avalokiteshvara. From young, my understanding of Buddhism is that its fundamental goals are peace, compassion, kindness and equality. Unfortunately, we are not seeing these traits in the actions of the Dalai Lama, his followers and CTA towards Dorje Shugden practitioners.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the news. May the ban be lifted soon _/\_
The article by Huffington Post is very well written, researched and offers a balanced view of the whole situation. I am also very heartened by the fact that Martin took the initiative to publish this post.
The segregations, ostracism, schism, discrimination, physical violence, and outright denial of basic medical care denied to Shugden practitioners are all highlighted in the article. I believe that the CTA will have no grounds or avenues to disprove these being committed on Shugden practitioners.
It is good and timely to have such posts coming out and done in a very professional manner. May more such articles appear across more media channels and this will certainly bring the issue at hand to the international level and eventually to allow the invocation of the UN Human Rights Declaration to religious freedom and bring a permanent end to this needless and senseless ban.
Thank you Rinpoche and Kechara for sharing.
May the ban be lifted immediately.

Huffington Post developed a serious reputation for Journalism that is easily digestible.
The Founder is Ariana Huffintong – covering politics, business, entertainment, lifestlye technology, and women interest and comedy. Huffington Post gained the title of the first commercially-run digital media enterprise in U.S. to win a Pulitzep Prize. It was said by our Guru, Tsem Rinpoche that Huffington Post would publish an issue on the Dorje Shugden matter on 14th November 2017, regarding “The Segregation and Discrimination against Dorje Shugden practitioners.” Rinpoche further added that “it is now definetely time for the Huffington Post to provide the powerful “voice” to relieve all Dorje Shugden practitioners of their terrible silent sufferings for the past 20 long years! Let us all pray hard and hope that Huffington Post will be able to provide a much more enlightened coverage on the Dorje Shugden issue and delima to ease the long sufferings of all Dorje Shugden practitioners! May there be love. kindness, understanding and compassion towards all Dorje Shugden sufferers!!! Huffington Post deserves a very grateful and deep-hearted thanks indeed from all Dorje Shugden worshippers. Om Mani Padme Hung.
Thank You Rinpoche and Huffington Post to bring the segregation and discrimination of Dorje Shugden practice to the world and out on the table unbiasedly. It was heartache for me to understand how they treat or abuse Dorje Shugden practitioners in India. I could not believe it and accept it personally, how can a Buddhist, which always promoting love and compassion, kindness and tolerance, harm another Buddhist (who did not do any harm to others or even harmless). It is entirely out of my understanding about Buddhism, it made Buddhism strange to me if I have not met my Lama.
All these torture and abuse has to stop now, it has done enough harm to a lot of harmless innocent Dorje Shugden practitioners. May I know what is wrong with them who practice Dorje Shugden praying? Did they harm anybody? If yes, please kindly provide the proof and accuse them in court as criminal. Dorje Shugden practice does not teach anybody to harm the innocent people like what CTA has done to others.
We are here not to harm anyone but we just want to have our freedom back to pursue our practice in peace. A lot of innocent people has been harmed and hurted due to this false accusation, we need to stop it and it is worth to bring it to public attention.
With this article by Huffington Post, it has given much needed and important publicity on the controversial issue of Dorje Shugden which has been ban by H.H Dalai Lama since 1996. The ban has segregated Tibetans into basically two groups. Since then many have suffered due to different opinions where some Tibetans simply wish to continue to practice Dorje Shugden which have been an enlighten Dharma Protector of the school of Gelug for the last 400 years.
Many friends, families, Masters and students were separated.
To those who chose not to abandon the practice, they are not allowed to attend schools, clinics and denied services by restaurants, shops and hotels which are run by CTA or anti-Shugden people.
Adhering to the Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which read “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion ; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in the community with others and in the public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.”
No democratic government will support and encourage discrimination based on their beliefs and religion.
Thank you, Huffington Post again and I look forward to reading more articles covering the truth of Dorje Shugden.
Many have made derogatory comments and false accusations against H.E. Tsem Rinpoche and thank you Rinpoche for the courage and perseverance by not giving up this authentic lineage.
The Huffington Post is a news media I like because of its respect for the truth. In these degenerate times where politics and hypocrisy lead to a lot of human suffering, we need a voice that represents the truth. The international community deserves to know the real state of affairs regarding the Shugden issue. We need knowledgeable and humane reporting based on the truth. Thank you for highlighting the ban imposed by H.H. the Dalai Lama and the CTA, and the plight of Shugden practitioners since the beginning of the ban in 1996.
Martin Desai has done his research well and published the truth and unbiased fact about the Dorje Shugden issue. May this article open the eyes of those anti Dorje Shugden. May the world also see what kind of government CTA is, to discriminate and segregate his own Tibetan people. CTA should be taking care of the welfare of their people. May the ban be lifted ASAP for all the Dorje Shugden practitioners to practice freely and peacefully.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the great news and thank you to Martin Desai for covering the Dorje Shugden issues unbiasedly.
The unbiased written views by Huffington Post is a breath of fresh air around this unprecedented issue on Dorje Shugden which many practitioners continued to suffer under the pretext of an “unwritten” ban. All we are asking HH Dalai Lama and the CTA is to take down all publicly written anti-Shugden online pages on their Official websites to abide by their Constitution rights to religious freedom. That is all! And why is that so hard to do unless HHDL and the CTA have differing agenda that they wish to continue to pursue like spreading dharma and planting dharma seeds into all beings on earth via this controversial issue.
A Big THANK YOU to you, Huffpost !
Thank you for your fair and balanced news about Shugden issue. More than 20 years already, shugden practitioner suffered from insult, bully ,discrimination, Psychological tortureand, unfair treated like house destroyed from others, their kids can’t go to school for studying, can’t enter hospital when sick, public their all shugden practitionals photo etc….just because they practice “Dorje Shugden”.
I stay i Malaysia, but at India and Tibet, i can imagine and understand that how suffer of them when my family members if they treated like that.
Hope that these issue will reach to more peoples and Dorje Shugden ban will lifted soon, give all the Dorje Shugden practitioner a fair , harmony, peace environment to future their practice to benefit others.
Thanks again, Huffpost ???

Huffpost is a media with a heart. Its article is without fear, prejudice and favour. It is great to see this article about Shugden ostracism appearing on a prominent news media without any bias. News of Shugden conflict often appeared lopsided
and did not reflect its true state of conflict since the day they were oppressed and suppressed 20 years ago.
I hope that many more media will follow the footstep of Huffpost to do the justice of the conflict and expose the tyranny of the Central Tibetan Administraton against Shugden practitioners. CTA should be exposed of violating the democratic principle for freedom of religion and casting an apartheid on her people in this 21st century which is inhumane. CTA shoud be exposed of its hypocrisy so that the ban on Dorje Shugden be stopped immediately to end the pain and suffering of Shugden practitioners within and across the borders.
Thank you Martin Desal for contributing this great article. With much gratitude and appreciation.
The facts are clear and finally such a renowned online newspaper has written about what is happening to the Dorje Shugden practitioners within Tibetan Buddhism. More people will become aware about the sufferings and light is shown onto the people who declared, and still uphold the ban within the Tibetan community. Not alone has Tibet lost his country but it is deeply divided because of the tragic ban which separates families, friends and even Gurus and their students.
I hope that by becoming more and more public, the injustice that Dorje Shugden practitioners have to face daily will make everyone who knows about democracy, point their finger at the Tibetan Government in Exile, CTA and expose what they have done and still are doing to their very own people only because of their religious choice!
Thank you Rinpoche for the tenacity to not give up and continue to expose the wrongdoings of the Tibetan Government in Exile, CTA.
Thank you Huffington Post for published an unbiased article of Dorje Shugden issue that has been around for decades. Kudos to the author, Martin Desai. This report not only just gives an overview of the issue but has covers quite extensive important and relevant points for fairly explained the situation on all sides without being biased to any.
The Dorje Shugden ban is not only affected the Tibetan but many Dorje Shugden practitioners around the world. The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) claims to be democratic but they published in their constitution that Dorje Shugden practitioners are not allowed to work in the government and have a website just to talk negatively about Dorje Shugden. Huffington Post correctly points out that before the controversy and ban, Shugden was already a wide spread practice, but it did not create disharmony at all. The evidence and proof show that Tibetan Leadership created the disharmony and segregation among their own peoples. Now the world will know and discover that what kind of leadership Dharamsala are really like and not to be fooled by them. You can read more here :Why Accepting Dorje Shugden Is Good for Tibetan Democracy: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/do rje-shugden/why-accepting-dorje-shugden-is-good-for-tibetan-democracy.html
Here again, I thank to Huffington Post for publishing this fair article.
Dorje Shugden issue, whether polically or spiritually, lately has caught more and more attention from the world. Dorje Shugden practioners all over the world has been suffered from discrimination, forced to give up the practice that given by their gurus.
Due to the blind faith of the people to HHDL, people turned Dorje Shugden practioners into devils. The Buddhist practice of compassion does not apply to DS people. No body check the truth, no body listen to their voice, no body care and speak up until H.E. the 25th Tsem Tulku Rinpoche say something about it. Today Rinpoche’s voice being heard and taken seriously because every word Rinpoche said is the truth according to sutra and nothing made up.
Why are DS people even being accused as Chinese spy? People chose to just follow what HHDL said becaus they regarded him as Guanyin and Quanyin never wrong. Well, I don’t know about Tibetan and the Buddhist in the world, but I definitely won’t be able to relate Guanyin vs discrimination and lie.
Thank you Martin Desai and The Huffington Post for an objective and excellent write-up on this important matter.
It is refreshing to see good journalism, particularly when it comes to breaking new ground on matters which have been seemingly analyzed “objectively” by the third force in democracies, in this case for the last 20 or so years.
It is also heartening for this believer and realizer of Buddhist philosophy that at the end of the day, just like in scientific theory, logic and the truth of matter will prevail.
I would like to share some links which show the extent to which the CTA has run this illogical campaign to split the Tibetans into those who support His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and those who don’t, who are then duly labelled Chinese Dogs.
1. The Tibetan Parliament In Exile, which claims to be a democracy, in 2014 passed a resolution to recognise Dorje Shugden “followers” and others – “whose (who) have caused grave harm to the faith and polity of Tibet under the Chinese government’s ploy and in violation of the law of Karma” – “as criminals in history”.
http://tibet.net/…/tibetan-parliament-passes…/
2. The leader of the Tibetan Parliament In Exile Lobsang Sangay launching a documentary film and book on “Dolgyal” (malicious spirit) to “Counter False Narrative of Dolgyal (malicious spirit) Groups”. This medieval and easily refuted campaign of misinformation was financed by the taxpayers and worldwide donors to the “democratic” CTA.

Thank You Huffington Post for speaking up
and recognizing the truth about Tsem Rinpoche.
Rejoice! And a wonderful news to all practitioners of Dorje Shugden! ?????? The time has come to release the ban! And it’s enough for the 20 years of silent suffering since His Holiness the Dalai Lama imposed a ban on the practice of Dorje Shugden.
CTA, you are a Big Liar! How can you abuse the religion and the practioners of Dorje Shugden? (Whom has a linage proven) You are using human right to against religion freedom and political to get money for your own purposes.
It’s 21st century now, religious discrimination is still existing? By then, the religious freedom should be granted and it’s a personal choice!
I beg you HHDL, please lift the ban against Dorje Shugden now! And creating hormany and peace for the practioners!!! ???
Thank you Martin Desai for writing the article. ????
It’s rejoicing where somehow some glimmering light shine to us. Million thanks to Huffington Post for producing unbiased article on Dorje Shugden controversy to acknowledge all.
For so many, many years, Tibetans in exile suffer much of humiliations, segregation due to practice of Dorje Shugden. No one were allowed to voice out for freedom as they will reconsider against Dalai Lama if words spoken upon the Tibetan government. CTA have gone far beyond power ruling. The ban of Dorje Shugden caused agitation to many Tibetans to leave as refugees at other countries. Even non-Tibetans DS practitioners like us being criticized, humiliated and been named as Chinese spies, dog, pig, sheep whatever.
Actually, religion is freedom choice, religion is one person spiritual path and religion shouldn’t be in politics. Religion is sentiment practice for all worshippers In their faith and should be respected. Heart broken to see CTA mistreated and separate such sacred practice with faithful worshippers.
Thank you to Rinpoche and all writters for sharing this wonderful news! ?
This is a great article posted by Huffington Post! It’s very beautifully written. The statement that Martin Desai mentioned are based on facts. He didn’t side anybody in this situation. He stated it clearly the ban was started by H.H Dalai Lama, CTA enforced it by discriminating Shugden practitioners. These are not rumors, these are truth and facts that CTA really did that. This definitely is a big slap on CTA’s face and a big hit on the Tibetan’s forehead to wake them up and see clearly, the Dorje Shugden issue is not simply a small issue. It involved all the Tibetan Buddhism practitioners around the world. It affects all the Tibetan, the Tibetan families. In fact, now, it even let the non Tibetan Buddhism practitioners see clearly what is happening. I hope more and more of the writings and article like this come out on various media, social media, and sources of information. May Dorje Shugden ban be lifted very very soon. ??
??????
Great to hear this.
May the ban be lifted asap.
May practitioner and non practitioner unite.
May there be peace.
May there be democracy.
May there be freedom of religion.
May there be no discrimination.
May the dharma florish.
May there be love , kindness and compassion towards the practitioner.
May the truth reveal.
May more people aware of the situation.
May there be more voices.
Thanks to the writer, Martin Desai.
Thank you.
In today’s world, religious freedom should be granted to everyone, because a religious belief is something very personal and it is for the wellbeing of that person, so if the government does not allow their citizen to have the freedom to practice what they believe, then how can they get fair treatment from the government from other aspect? Moreover, a government should not interfere one’s religious belief, because politics and religious should not mix.
I like how Huffington wrote this article, they are not writing on either side, it is very unbiased and given very fair point of view.
“The timeline of events also indicates that it was the edicts and pronouncements against the Shugden practice which created the discord within the Buddhist ranks in the first place. If Shugden acolytes were allowed to continue their worship practices unmolested by other factions within the Buddhist community, as they have done freely for 350 years, there would arguably be no schism to exploit.”
As per mentioned above, It is already very clear that CTA is splitting the Tibetan apart and not Dorje Shugden (DS), but they just put all the blame to DS practitioners and even taking drastic actions towards them. People out there has wisdom, they can see the situation and analyse by themselves, is it really as what CTA said practicing DS will tear Tibetans apart or DS is just a scapegoat to the hidden agenda of CTA?
Thank you Huffington for writing this article, it is a light shed to the DS practitioners who has been suppressed for so many years, I hope more and more people can see the game played by CTA and do not trust them anymore, and to lift the ban so the practitioners can practice Dorje Shugden in peace.
Thank you, Huffington Post! ?
Thank you, Martin Desai! ?
Thank you for being open minded & providing us an unbiased information that you’ve done with well researches.
People are in real sufferings because of the BAN of the Dorje Shugden practice. The BAN is irrational & illogical. There is no positive outcome but negative ones…
In this modern era, I don’t think it’s too much to ask for religion freedom, harmony and respect. There is no reason for us to create more problems for ourselves. At the end of the day, each of us just wish to have happiness.
Many including me happy to see this piece of news report published on HuffPost, reason for this is one of the balanced news report on Dorje Shugden issue. The Dorje Shugden ban, issues related and caused by the ban has never been covered as complete as this by a news and opinion website. Many reports have not been present both sides of the story and bias. The unfair and bias treatment of news report which affecting public opinion is actually reflected in what have experienced by Dorje Shugden people around the world. Dorje Shugden people have long been being ostracised, segregated and discriminated online (Read more on online abuse received by Dorje Shugden people: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/dorje-shugden/will-the-dalai-lama-agree-with-this.html) and offline.
The journalist have done throughout research on the issue, this can reflect on facts and information presented which offered insights on the Dorje Shugden issue, including some great teachers and important pillars behind the fighting of the ban to be lifted – H.E. Tsem Rinpoche and Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.
Thank you for this balanced piece by the journalist Martin Desai, and the platform provided by HuffPost. Thank you for playing the media and journalist’s role in very important role in creating awareness on various issues, and keep the society informed; especially in building a more liberal global society.
Great article by Huffington for such a fair and factual reporting. This is the most accurate report on the situation of the Dorje Shugden ban ever written by mainstream media. The unjust ban has been going on for too long, and despite the absurdity of it, Tsem Rinpoche has always been fighting the ban in a very level-headed and polite ways possible. The Tibetan leadership is the only “government” to have banned a particular religion officially and put up the order to ban the religion of their websites, and to execute the order throughout the fabric of the society, and it is supposed to be a “Buddhist” administration where tolerance and acceptance is the main core of the practice, what an irony. So this Huffington report has most accurately and fairly explained the situation on all sides without being biased to any. Kudos. The ban needs to end right now, the suffering has been going on unnecessarily for too long.
Many thanks to Huffington Post, Dorje Shugden’s issue gets a fair and balanced coverage from this unbiased world class news website.
The HuffPost is ranked the most powerful blog in the world by The Observer, a British newspaper which is the world’s oldest Sunday newspaper that takes social liberal or social democratic line on the most issues. When such a reputable and unbiased news media would publish Dorje Shugden’s issue, it sends the message that there are unfair, injustice and violations of human rights matter that the world should look into.
For 20 years the Dorje Shugden practitioners are suffering because CTA imposed Dorje Shugden’s ban that causes segregation and discrimination. If CTA is truly democratic which they claimed themselves is, they should have practice democracy all the way, and would not demonize a deity and highly advice against Dorje Shugden practice. A government who does not grant human rights, how democratic it can be?
Huffington Post has cited credible source as evidence of the Dorje Shugden’s ban. Most importantly it gives truth that Dorje Shugden practitioners have no connection with China. Dorje Shugden practitioners do not fight the ban to please China but for the religious freedom to fulfill their spiritual practice commitments. This publishing has given a voice for those who are suffered in silence for decades.
More coverage like Huffington Post’s is very much needed in the future. The sufferings lives of innocent Dorje Shugden practitioners should be known and spread to many.
I don’t really think much of the Tibetans who follow their lame government. We seen just how much the average Tibetan suffers under their current leadership and top that Dorje Shugden issue somuch suffering. How long Tibetans and Dhorje Shugen practitioner must suffe, such leaders who care only for themselves and who cheats to benefit themselves leaving the Tibetans and using Dharma. We hope international media bring this matter into their hand and help.
Finally. A good unbiased post that stood up for the injustice that was done and still being done to Dorje Shugden practictioners. The discrimination and segregation of Shugden followers had caused so much of suffering and pain and in total violation of basic human rights. Shugden followers are being denied acess to governmental jobs, healthcare, education and even as simple as service in a restuarant. The world needs to know the truth. Thank you Huffpost for this brilliantly written article and kudos to the writer, Martin Desai. Thank you.
This is the greatest news by far for the year. Finally, we have one of mainstream media network Huffington Post coverage on the Dorje Shugden issue as they lay out the truth about the ban & false accusation of Dorje Shugden practitioners receiving funds & working together with China to further weaken the Tibetan cause. The media fair & unbiased approach is certainly has tremendous positive effect to gather support worldwide in an effort to end the suffering of Dorje Shugden practitioners by lifting the ban & regain the right of religious freedom. I would like to thank Tsem Tulku Rinpoche for his unwavering passion & effort to end the suffering of Dorje Shugden practitioners despite of such great difficulties & challenges against the Dalai Lama & CTA. This is what I believe a true Buddhist should do, that is to spread love & compassion to all.
May all you wishes be fulfilled Rinpoche.
Injustice to anyone should be highlighted consistently in public so that the perpetrators stop their inhumane activities.
Rinpoche is now featured in Huffington Post US Edition, for speaking up on the injustice of religious persecution enforced by the Central Tibetan Administration. Many Tibetans are ostracized and are forbidden to attend school, buy food and receive medical attention because of their religious practice.
Rinpoche is not allowed to return to his monastery, just like his friends in the monastery. He is harrassed and threatened online daily for standing firm on his religious practice. Wild rumours are spread to defame him and his Buddhist practice. It’s crazy how others want to damage him no matter how much he contributes to the communities around the world.
Fortunately, many Tibetans who are victims of this injustice have expressed their gratitude towards Rinpoche for speaking up publicly and creating a lot of pressure on the perpetrators to stop their cruelty.
Spiritual practice is about developing kindness and having a state of mind that is spontaneously selfless. We hope that through our peaceful methods of exposing the injustice, international authorities would put pressure on Central Tibetan Administration to end religious apartheid.
Great to see that journalist from the other countries are aware of the sufferings of Dorje Shugden practitioners. Hence the article was written and published by Huffington Post. The article written by them was based on the information they gathered and was nicely presented without taking sights to anyone but to highlight the problems and the sufferings that the Tibetan people have to go through. So, may this and many more article like this be written and publish for others to be aware of and may this bank be lifted very soon. _/\_
The Dorje Shugden issue is one that affects so many people around the world, not only the Tibetan community. Since Tibetan Buddhism has spread all over the world, so has the practice of Dorje Shugden. As such there are many practitioners from diverse backgrounds, all over the world. But what they have in common is their Buddhist practice, and the devotion they feel towards Dorje Shugden.
This article covers the major points surrounding the situation and does so in an unbiased and fair manner. This is something that has been lacking up until this point. Tensions have been high on both sides, but as His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche has always taught, we must think about the situation and act in a logical manner. We can only progress when there is dialogue between both sides, to analyse the situation using logic.
There is no doubt that Dorje Shugden practitioners have been ostracised from not only Tibetan communities but Tibetan Buddhist communities all over the world. Here, HuffPost presents an article that is clear to understand and gives an overview of the situation. I hope there are many more such articles in the future, so that people can come to a logical conclusion about the issue themselves.
This is an unbiased piece that gives a clear and easy to understand overview of the Dorje Shugden controversy. It is a “as a matter fact” piece that should be accepted easily by the general public.
It has been a 20 year struggle for the Dorje Shugden practitioners since His Holiness the Dalai Lama imposed a ban on the practice. Families, friends, relatives, couples, etc. were separated due to it. There were many innocent people who were hurt, abandoned and killed because of it. This intended result is totally against the concept of compassion, kindness and equality His Holiness represents.
Many assumed that all Dorje Shugden practitioners do not like His Holiness and they all demonstrated in his teachings for the last 20 years or so with the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT) founded by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. It has been pointed out distinctively in this article that it is not the case.
His Eminence the 25th Tsem Rinpoche has always fought the unlawful ban by peaceful and powerful means – writing and education. His Eminence preaches patience and kindness that reflect on his approach in the face of hate speech, threats, etc. He also taught his students to do the same.
His Eminence’s approach seems to be more effective as people are being educated on the controversy and many turned their minds because of that.
Thank you Huffington Post for publishing an unbiased article addressing the Dorje Shugden issue that has been around for decades. It is very rare to find reports like this due to the nature of this controversy, many do not pay attention to it. But nonetheless, the sufferings of Dorje Shugden practitioners is real, the discrimination and ostracism against Dorje Shugden practitioners is real! Therefore it is important to have a good and unbiased news platform to talk about the issue, it is potent to let people outside of the circle know that religious discrimination still exists in the 21st century, and it is destroying the lives of many people.
No humans on earth should have to suffer unfair treatments due to the religion they choose to believe in. Can you image if the US government were to say that Buddhists are not allowed to work in the parliament? Do you think people will accept that? Of course not! The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) claims to be democratic but obviously for all the things they have done up to this day, they are nothing close to democracy. It is written in their constitution that Dorje Shugden practitioners are not allowed to work in the government. How nonsensical is that? Not only that, it is known within the community that Dorje Shugden pracitioners are not allowed to enter most of the restaurants and shops, Dorje Shugden practitioners are refused treatment at hospitals and clinics run by the government. There are proofs to prove all that because it’s written clearly on a sign outside of these premises.
More people must know of the CTA’s evil and undemocratic rulling, people must not be fooled by their lies. Discriminating someone based on one’s religion is not something to be tolerated. Thank You Huffington Post for speaking the truth.
Thank you Huffington Post for being among the first news media to publish a balanced, fair and unbiased report on the Dorje Shugden controversy. Huffington Post presents all the aspects and issues that are at the heart of the controversy. It shows how illogical it is for the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government to ban and segregate the Shugden practitioners.
How apt it is for Huffington Post to pick the analogy of the Pope threatening to
excommunicate, from the Church, Catholics who promote the Virgin Mary. By using this
analogy, it convincingly shows how absurd and grossly unjust this segregating and
ostracising of Shugden practitioners is ,as it amounts to taking away their basic
human rights to freedom of worship.
Another sharp comment made is about the issue of unity. The Dalai Lama and Tibetan
Government had accused Shugden practitioners of causing disunity and creating
sectarianism. The Post correctly points out that before the controversy and ban,
Shugden was already a wide spread practice, but it did not create disharmony at all.
Subsequently,The Post points out that with the ban and negative talk and action
of the Tibetan Leadership, in demonizing Dorje Shugden worship, there is now greater disharmony.
Thank you Huffington Post for recognizing the truth about Tsem Rinpoche – that he respects the Dalai Lama, even though he is firm in his belief in Shugden. He also tirelessly works for a peaceful solution to this conflict.
Thanks Rinpoche and the blog team sharing this unbiased article by Huffington Post.
Indeed, I feel very grateful for this article in neutral stand on Dorje Shugden issue. I think now only the Central Tibetan Authority on this earth agrees on this ban and didn’t see any problems. There are ways too many evidence and points on this blog showing the modern world doesn’t need this meaningless ban.
The only spiritual reason I can think of is Dalai Lama is indeed promoting Dorje Shugden through this “defamation” so China will pick it up.
“In effect it appears it was only after the Dalai Lama spoke against the practice that the Chinese government made its first tentative approaches to Shugden practitioners, possibly sensing an opportunity to exploit the rift and weaken the push for Tibetan autonomy.”
If we think along this line, I would say Dalai Lama is really very skilful to bring Dharma to the world by scarifying his own reputation and the unity of Tibet community. This also shows that not only Dorje Shugden is an enlighten being to help us, but also an important protector in this era.
21 years is enough for the ban, time to lift the ban and let Dorje Shugden roars.
Thank you.
This article feels like it’s been a long time coming. I can understand why no one else has covered it in this way before: why would anyone want to risk alienating Tibet-supporting liberals by talking about how the affable, charming, spiritual Dalai Lama is enforcing a ban on religious freedoms? Who would believe such a thing?
So for years, the mainstream media has resisted giving fair and balanced coverage to the Dorje Shugden issue. It was just easier to go along with the Tibetan leadership’s false accusations – that there is no ban, that Dorje Shugden practitioners are (falsely) connected with China, that Dorje Shugden practitioners are (falsely) out to harm the Dalai Lama.
Why write a different narrative when it doesn’t benefit them, I’m sure many editors must’ve thought.
So for The Huffington Post and Martin Desai to provide coverage that is actually objective (and not just pretending to be while laced with poisonous subtext about how Dorje Shugden practitioners are evil) is for Shugden practitioners a refreshing, welcome and encouraging change. As I commented on the actual HuffPost article, it gives us some hope that there will one day be an end to the 20-year nightmare as more people realize what kind of leadership Dharamsala are really like.
I’m really looking forward to more coverage like this, and hope that The Huffington Post’s article is just the start of more to come.

It has been long that HHDL had been given the limelight by western governments and mainstream media to be used as western propaganda against communist ideology particularly toward China who had shown signs of economic supremacy. Never had a report being made pertaining the dark-side of HHDL who speak differently to the western journalist and total opposite while addressing his own people back home in Dharamsala on same issue.
This one article by Hoffington post was the most neutral, easy digest compilations of past and current Shugden issues that caused millions of Tibetan and their associates to suffer unnecessary. Very good summary for third neutral party, fence sitter, curiositist…etc. to learn and understand the rift in Tibetan Buddhism, the reasoning and basis from both sides making their claims and judgment for themselves.
This is a great day indeed, the first thought i had when I first saw Martin’s update on Facebook was, this is it, it’s at the tipping point, the tree of struggle is flowering and soon it will bear fruit.
After all the long anxieties, doubts and anguishes as the result of the DorjeShugden issue, finally The Huffington Post had given a fair and balanced study and interest to this related matter.
A simple and straightforward writeup with unbiased views comes with supporting evidences from this journalist cum contributor Martin Desai has given a chance for the reviewing and reassessment on all the prolonged claims which eventually shed light to the tug of war.
As HHDL has been conferred the honour of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize which he wrote in his Facebook page “Love, kindness, compassion and tolerance are the qualities common to all the great religions”.
Why has this message being brought and addressed to Christian, Muslim……and also Rohingas Muslim and not to his fellow nation, the Shugden practitioners, which are being discriminated, vandalized, death threats or even denied in accessing to all public facilities i.e. schools, hospitals..etc?
Are the CTA or HHDL adhering to the Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which read “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion ; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief , and freedom, either alone or in the community with others and in the public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.”
A big thank you to Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, Geshe Kelsang Gyatso and all the great Dorje Shugden’s Lama who had been working tirelessly; giving voice to the voiceless and hope to the beleaguered.
This article on Huffington Post for sheds light onto this whole Dorje Shugden controversy. It was a huge shock to me when I first heard and got to know how His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in a way, allows the discrimination and segregation based on one’s belief to happen. It is 21st century and such religious persecution like prohibiting Dorje Shugden followers from entering Tibetan hospitals/clinics, attending Tibetan schools, being a part in the Tibetan communities and many more. I went to the Tibetan communities before in India, the segregation and discrimination are REAL and the Dorje Shugden followers are too scared to even voice out their feelings. Those who voice out and go against the Tibetan government in exile, their names, and personal details including home address were posted up onto posters and they also went onto the hit-list posted by the government on their official website. Also on the government website Tibet.net, (http://tibet.net/important-issues/dolgyal-shugden/) they have a specially designed section to just talk negatively about a deity, which is Dorje Shugden. H.E. Tsem Rinpoche, the founder of Kechara Organization in Malaysia, a prominent Dorje Shugden Lama is also constantly under attacks on the internet, just because He voice against the Dorje Shugden ban. How democracy this government could be? All I see is theocracy, hiding of what they have done to ostracize Dorje Shugden followers, and pretending to be a democracy and modern government.
Rejoice!!!!! What a great news! Thank you very much Rinpoche, writers and blog team for working so hard to build awareness of the unjust ban on Dorje Shugden practice. A big thank you to Huffington Post for producing a unbias article based on research. Many of the Dorje Shugden people and lamas, were hurt, threatened, abused on social media, and denied services, sometimes basic services like health care and education. 20 years is too long to perpetuate this ban.May the ban against Dorje Shugden be lifted soon so that many can have freedom to do this great Dharma Protector practice. Thank you once again to Rinpoche and the team for working tirelessly to raise the issue and let the world know. ?????
The atrocities faced by Dorje Shugden practitioners who were discriminated for their personal religious beliefs are now being noticed by the international media. This will definitely help to stop the bullying and for the ban to be removed asap !! It is absolutely illogical and baseless to have this ban on the Dorje Shugden practice !! It’s crucial that the ban be removed to reduce further damage to the reputations of those who instated it. They are starting to look bad in the eyes of the world !!
Thank you HuffPost for a well written “middle way” article.
Thank you Rinpoche for holding on steadfast to the Dorje Shugden practice which have benefited many beings. With folded hands.
What a great article on the Dorje Shugden issue! Kudos to the author. In his article, he sounds unbiased and writes a great and concise overview of a Tibetan issue that is complex and steeped in Tibetan religious culture and dogma.
Although pretty short, it covers quite extensive important and relevant points. This gives a great introductory explanation of the width and breadth of a huge issue. I particularly like the fact that the writer did proper research so the information is sound and for once, it does justice to Shugden practitioners when some articles recently had been largely one-sided.
I look forward to reading more articles covering a broader spectrum of interests within the Dorje Shugdem issue. This will bring greater coverage of the truth of the Dorje Shugden
What a great news! Thank you Rinpoche for working so hard to build awareness of the unjust ban on Dorje Shugden practice. I am happy that a well-rounded article about the Shugden issue is featured in the Huffington Post, and therefore more and more people will be aware of the issue.
I respect Rinpoche’s perseverance to continue the Dorje Shugden practice although it has not been easy. Despite repeated explanation that Rinpoche practiced Dorje Shugden because it is the practice that Rinpoche received from H.H. Zong Rinpoche, many people who are influenced by the opponents of Shugden practice had made many derogatory comments and false accusations against Rinpoche. However, Rinpoche responded to them in a courteous manner and at the same time continue the effort to develop awareness regarding this obvious religious discrimination. Now we can see the fruit of Rinpoche’s effort with the publication of this article in the Huffington Post.
I sincerely hope that the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration will end this unjust ban against Dorje Shugden practice and restore harmony among the practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism around the world.
Valentina
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this heartwarming news. Is good to see that an renown publication agency acknowledge that there is a ban , there is a unfair treatment for Dorje Shugden practitioner especially the Tibetan community in India they are the one that suffer the most , like what the article has mention it again the Dalai Lama principal of always emphasise on peace and harmony how can he contradict with what he said where is the peace and harmony among the Tibetan community with the ban it create disharmony and discrimination among the Tibetan community , I hereby urged His Holiness to lift the ban so that everyone can freely practice what they want, we need religion freedom.
Best NEWS ever. Literally.
Bravo to Huffington post for publishing and presenting real facts of what is truly happening within the Tibetan Buddhist communities; not only in Tibet and India but apparent around the world. It is refreshing to finally read an unbiased article on the Shugden issue by a trustworthy, international source.
The public need to know the truth as Shugden practitioners have been shunned like plague and hunted like witches. I hope this piece of article will shed some light to those in doubt and relief to those who have suffered for so many years. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this good news.
In this article, we can see that the author had done a thorough research and follow-up on Dorje Shugden issue that many may not be aware of, even bringing out a question that worth pondering on: Is Dorje Shugden issue a religious or a political issue?
If it is a religious issue, why don’t they get it resolved by religious means? H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama is a highly attained buddhist master. Why should him bring this issue to the political platform if it only involves a so-called worldly spirit? If a highly attained monk whom Tibetans believe to be the emanation of Avalokiteshvara could do nothing to subdue a worldly spirit, does it mean that a worldly spirit is more powerful than the buddha?
To read more about the logic behind it, please refer to these article:
https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/why-cant-the-dalai-lama-bind-dorje-shugden.html
https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/great-lamas-masters/dorje-shugden-people-do-not-go-to-the-three-lower-realms.html
If it is a pure religious issue, why involve politics? Why the Central Tibetan Administration that supposed to be a democratic goverment and which supposed to bring justice and care to their people, instead of doing so, they did the opposite by taking lead in ostracising their own Tibetan people, promoting religious persecution and even encouraging violence against Dorje Shugden practitioners? Will this help in bringing the unity among Tibetans?
Why Accepting Dorje Shugden Is Good for Tibetan Democracy: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/dorje-shugden/why-accepting-dorje-shugden-is-good-for-tibetan-democracy.html
In order to achieve world peace, it’s important that we respect basic human rights, elimate discrimination, reduce all forms of violence, protect fundamental freedoms such as religious freedom, and combating the suppression of minorities. In this context, the media plays an important role in bringing the undercovered news to the public.
Here again, I thank the Huffington Post for publishing this article, and I hope to read more articles of this kind in future.
A big thank you to Huffington Post for producing a non bias article based on research. It is with utmost importance that this article reach many who do not know about this controversy and also to the anti Shugden people who are causing much problems for Shugden practitioners.
Many are discriminated for practicing Dorje Shugden which is very unnecessary. Everyone have the right to practice what they want. The CTA as a political party does not have the right to invade one’s rights nor do they as a government can tell their people who they can pray to. What I find disturbing is that it not only affecting the Tibetans but all those who are practicing Dorje Shugden. How can that be? We are not even Tibetans. But we are called names that are derogatory and people are spreading lies about Dorje Shugden practitioners being Chinese spies.
Our Guru have to endure so much humiliation because of what He practice.
May this post shed light for those who suffered and still suffering from Dorje Shugden’s unjust ban.
For 20 years! 20 years! Dorje Shugden’s practitioners have to endure the pain result from the Central Tibetan Administration’s (CTA) political game. Separate from families, being ban from going to school and even to get basic treatment from hospital. Due to the famous name of H.H Dalai Lama and the CTA always show the “poor me” drama to the world, the world can only see what the CTA wanted to show. But, the real victim, the Dorje Shugden’s practitioners, the exile within exile have been silent by the CTA. No one will dare to report on the ban of Dorje Shugden. Sadly, this include the western media which are bias towards H.H Dalai Lama. Thus, for 20 years, the tortured that Dorje Shugden’s practitioner going through, the insult, the harassment has not known to the World. If you not believe in me, just post something about Dorje Shugden in Twitter and facebook, immediately, you will get insult, harassment from those people who say there are the Dalai Lama’s followers.
I sincerely thanks to Huffington Post who are not bowed down to any power, any stress have speak the truth about Dorje Shugden.
Thank you

This a timely media coverage from a reputable media publication. The discrimination against Dorje Shugden practitioners has been going for far too long. Foreigners are lead to believe that everything is well and fine, Tibetans themselves voluntarily given up the practice; the truth is Tibetans and practitioners are strongly discouraged, else they would face with consequences. Is this the so called religious freedom that follow the democratic principles?
Even non-Tibetan practitioners are faced with negative stigma because of the perceived ‘bad’, ‘negative’, ‘spirit’ that associated from the ban. Outside of Tibetan refugees settlements, Dorje Shugden practitioners are specifically excluded from joining public teachings given by Dharma center that supports Dalai Lama. Is such exclusion acceptable when such teachings are open to other worshippers, non-believers, and sinners?
Posts like this gives a new breathe to our voices and are always welcomed i am sure! Thank you Huffpost for highlighting this issue and also gave balanced view on the unnecessary ban. I felt the article was fairly written and it helps to make people understand the real situation happening in India under CTA rule. Discriminations, segregations, (even killings!) both online or physical are at large within the Tibetan community. The classic proff will be on Rinpoche’s facebook and twitter accounts. Rinpoche receive death threats, online abuse and slurs what not hurled at Him daily. People might think it is ok as this doesn’t hurt them but we all of us Shugdenpas felt it a lot especially Rinpoche and other Lamas who came out to speak out for Dorje Shugden.
The reasoning behind the ban is very illogical and warrants everybody’s attention especially when what ensues are discrimination and segregation actions were made to those who still holding onto Dorje Shugden loyally. Don’t even mention about the Chinese spy part, where it seems everyone associated with Dorje Shugden will automatically be associated as spies from and paid by China.
It’s heartwarming to see this post and i hope there will be more of such posts the world will know about this existing torture Dorje Shugden practitioners are taking on and there could be an end to this ban. Practising Dorje Shugden is not harmful and especially to Dalai Lama’s health (living into HH’s 80s), High Lamas who practised Dorje Shugden still come back as human life after life (despite claimed otherwise by CTA) and this practise is so so popular in Tibetan Buddhism (also claimed otherwise by CTA).
I am sure, just like every other Shugdenpas in the world would want to see one day HH Dalai Lama would come out to speak about the ban and maybe have an audience with Tsem Rinpoche to speak about the ban and find “The Middle Way” solution to this long standing issue as many more out there are still suffering from this unnecessary ban! May the ban on Dorje Shugden practice be lifted soon and everyone have religious freedom.
Thank you once again HuffPost for highlighting this issue!
Thank you so much Huffington Post for writing such a good unbiased report and for once allowing the truth to be heard. Thank you Martin Desai for being a true reporter and producing a fair side of the Shugden controversy story with facts and quotes. Unlike Reuters who were very one-sided and made many lost their respect for them, Huffington has done the opposite – respect and gratitude because honest journalism is almost nil today. They are almost always “bought” by the big boys.
I hope that from this news, the world would come to understand the Dorje Shugden issue and injustice of the Tibetan exile leadership, and hopefully, someone will say something or do something to stop this hypocrisy in them and allow their good people to practice what they want without any form of discrimination. That is just not the correct conduct for a democratic leadership/nation but also the correct conduct for Buddhist, which the Tibetan leadership is supposed to be in both aspects. So, let’s hope this news shed light to end the conflict, disharmony, persecution and disunity of Tibetan and Buddhist all around the world.
Yes it is sad that His Holiness goes around preaching and promoting religious tolerance, compassion and love yet he can clearly ask all Shugden practitioners to attend any of his teachings, be it general teachings, not initiations. Yes, why the disgust with Shugden people so much so suddenly? Who whispered to His Holiness’s ears to make him feel this way all so suddenly, like overnight he such turned. And without any proper evidence or proof, so many things have been twisted.
To be honest if it was not for H.E. Tsem Rinpoche’s advice to us Malaysian students, if we read, see the videos on the persecution etc., it would turn me off to Buddhism and lose all respect to His Holiness. Seriously I would not even respect the Dalai Lama. The only reason why I, or most Malaysian Kecharians I believe, respect H.H. the Dalai Lama is actually because of Tsem Rinpoche. It was because what Rinpoche explained to us and told us that Dalai Lama is an enlightened being, Chenrezig incarnation on earth and that we must never disrespect or criticise such a highly attained being. And that what His Holiness is doing with this ban on Dorje Shugden must be of a greater purpose that we, with our very limited wisdom and ordinary views, cannot comprehend at the moment, never the less we should never criticise. These we the very same words of advice by H.H. Trijang Rinpoche in his book Music Delighting the Ocean of Protectors predicting this ban was going to happen before it happens: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/dorje-shugden/music-delighting-the-ocean-of-protectors-a-definitive-guide-to-dorje-shugden-by-trijang-rinpoche.html
The text explains that great beings such as H.H. the Dalai Lama, H.H. the Panchen Lama and Dorje Shugden may manifest what seems like conflict with each other. In reality, they are actually working together for the benefit of sentient beings. This shows that the enlightened activities of these great masters and the Dharmapala are actually pervasive and universal. So in light of this understanding, hence this is why although we disagree and do not support the ban, we respectfully request His Holiness to please remove it and to please STOP the corrupted leaders of Tibetan Administration – Central Tibetan Administration CTA because soon all the ugliness will eventually come to the surface.
Thank you again Huffington Post for bringing light to this issue back to mainstream media so the world understands better what is really going on. And why should anyone discriminate Shugden practitioners just because of our faith? Why should any democratic government or nation do that and allow that and publish and create brochures and materials against another religion? This is the two-face Tibetan leadership that must be exposed and stopped because on the one hand they are killing their own people and on the other, they pretend to be practising compassion to ask for free money from other governments and people all around the world. So those who donate to CTA’s works which they claim is for a “charitable cause”… well, printing materials and making websites against another person’s religion is NOT “charity” and the people need to be aware of this.
Huffington Post is a prestigious commercially run digital news media whose track record of informing the world of what is factual and true to its stand as a voice of justice to humanity issues had gained recognition and won in 2012 the American Pulitzer Prize.
Such an award is highly respected and as such for Huffington Post to write on the Shugden issue of discrimination and abuse by the CTA and stopping the practice of Dorje Shugden by the Dalai Lama on a very factual and neutral basis presenting facts of the matter deserves world recognition that it is not a hearsay but the truth.
Accusations with highest degree of falsity against Dorje Shugden High Lamas like H.E the 25th Tsem Rinpoche and Geshe Kelsang Gyatso are now exposed from a neutral source of information by Huffington Post.
Tsem Rinpoche has always held the Dalai Lama with great reverence and love and has always followed and taught the Doctrrine of Je Tsongkapa the founder of the Geluk tradition. Never had he ever made vulgar nor rude remarks on the Dalai Lama. Tsem Rinpoche had always talked about the Dorje Shugden issue with respect for the Buddhist tenets of love and compassion. Most of all Tsem Rinpoche always explains the situation with perfect logical analysis for the sake of right minded people and not through blind faith. Leaving the choice of Dorje Shugden practice to the right minded and sharp people.
I rejoice that such a neutral article is written by Huffington Post and that all misinformation about Dorje Shugden be now erased from the minds of non believers and reinforce the faith of believers.
It is great to see that Huffington Post has a unbiased and fair post on Dorje Shugden’s issue. This really helps more people to understand the discrimination, vulgarity and vandalism, death treats etc that are still targeting at the Dorje Shugden practitioners.
Another thing that HuffPost mentioned is very true ie Dorje Shugden practitioners are always be accused to be linked with China. In reality, there is no proof that we are taking money from China and most of us practice Dorje Shugden just because it is a practice given by our Guru.
Hope more media will be like HuffPost to publish unbiased articles on the Shugden issue and let many more aware of what is happening.
Sincerely pray that the ban on Dorje Shugden can be lifted soonest and everyone can practice it peacefully and harmony. May the sufferings of Dorje Shugden practitioners be relief soonest.
The write-up of Huffpost is the true reflection of the issue of Dorje Shugden’s practitioner, and is happening for 20 years, and it is now that we have a Huffpost a reputable journalism given a true voice of the truth. Hope to have more journalism and associates that will come up with more of this supporting articles for peace and religious freedom
The Sakyas were the main practitioners of Dorje Shugden before the torch was passed on to the Gelug order during Je Pabongka’s time and neither the Sakyas or Gelug persecuted or destroyed other traditions.
The ban is truly undemocratic with almost zero participation of Dorje Shugden in the civil service or parliament, being purged previously. Central Tibetan Administration(CTA) should not tell the whole world they are a democractic community, of which they are not. Its shameful for CTA to perform discrimination and segregation it in the backyard of the largest democracy in the world, India.
Many of the Dorje Shugden people and lamas, were hurt, threatened, abused on social media, and denied services, sometimes basic services like health care and education. 20 years is too long to perpetuate this ban.
What the author wrote is really spot on, that prior to the Dorje Shugden ban, China was not interested in the Dorje Shugden issue, so I would not be wrong to say the Dorje Shugden ban is the catalyst and trigger to undermine Tibetan cause. Dorje Shugden people only want their rights protected and the freedom to rely on Dorje Shugden without stigma, and doing so proliferate Je Tsongkhapa’s teachings all over.
What Huffpost wrote is quite fair. Most of the information are well known among the Tibetans in Exile and it is very easily verified. There are claims that Dorje Shugden practitioners are Chinese spies to topple the Tibetan leadership, but there is no proofs. May be there are some who took money from China government, but many of us do not benefit from China, and we practice because the practice is given by our Guru.
What is important is to have a dialogue between the two sides to clear up the issue. All is needed from HH Dalai Lama is to say that everyone is free to practice and if He advise His people not to discriminate, then the problem can almost be resolved overnight, because HH Dalai Lama has got tremendous influences to His people. The suppression of Dorje Shugden practitioners bring absolutely no benefit to the HH Dalai Lama, Tibetans, Tibetan unity as well as Dorje Shugden practitioners.
Every country or nation has their freedom of choice. Every government will show respect for their people differences believes in order to unite their people. This is being practice to create harmony and peace for their people.
The baseless Dorje Shugden ban had causes so much suffering among the Tibetan. Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) instead of improving the welfare of their people that has been refugee for close to 60 years and looking for ways to have a peace dialogue with China for their people to return are much enthusiate to divide, discriminate their own people. A side of this unjust ban what is more important for the Tibetan leadership to act for the benefit of their people? To further separate the Tibetan and make their situation more weak and worst?
I really appreciate this unbiased article from Huffington Post that show the truth of the ban. The world need to know how Tibetan leadership treated their people by taking away their religious freedom and human rights. It has been a long suffering for Dorje Shugden communities and the ban should stop now.
Thank you Rinpoche sharing this article from Huffington Post. Dorje Shugden ban is getting more people’s attention in the world now. This is a good time for everyone to think, find out more and understand the truth about this issue. This is no longer about the issue of religious but it is more to the fundamental human rights on their freedom and religious that bring much impact in their life.
Basically, everyone may wish to have their life is improving and getting better. But, it seems that this is not applied to the Tibetan people. The Tibetan people especially Dorje Shugden practitioners have suffered and facing a lot of difficulties, segregation and discrimination for the past 20 years. This situation is getting worse when Sera Jey Monastery introduced an identity badge system to for its monks to indicate that they were not Dorje Shugden practitioner. From that, we can understand those who are practiced Dorje Shugden were not welcome at the monastic university. This is another kind of discrimination happening now in Tibet.
I humbly wish that those who are given Dorje Shugden practice by your guru, please continue to have strong faith in your guru and Dorje Shugden. For those who have misunderstand or do not know about Dorje Shugden, please think and understand that our concern now is not only about the religious but the importance of fundamental human rights for people.
The truth cannot be hid. The injustice done to the Dorje Shugden practitioners finally drew attention from the international media. I hope more and more people can open up their mind to listen to both side of the stories before judging Dorje Shugden practitioners. These baseless accusations have separated many families, friends, teacher-students relationship. The ban has not done any good to the Tibetans in exile, it created tension, conflicts, separation, disharmony. It is already a suffering for Tibetans in exile not being able to go back to their motherland, why make them suffer more by imposing this very unnecessary ban.
Great piece by Huffington Post and great effort by the writer to uncover some of the oft-murky truths that the Tibetan leadership would prefer remain hidden.
I’m really pleased to know that publications like Huffpost are finally turning their attention to this long standing issue that has plagued tibetan buddhist communities for over 20 years. Unbiased reporting like this is exactly what the downtrodden community needs to put some international pressure on the Tibetan authorities to once and for all stop the discrimination and segregation against Shugden acolytes that belongs in the Dark Ages.
Finally the international media is taking note of the controversy that has been happening in the Tibetan community for years and that their fight has now gained some mileage. The article comes in a neutral point of view where they do not take sides. They are just stating the facts which happened and the unfair judgement made by the CTA. They made comparison with the Catholic Church where the Pope could not ban the people from worshipping Virgin Mary or St. Francis which makes sense.
This is about the freedom of people to practice any religion they wishes to and does not go against the law or harm anyone. Everyone, including Tibetans, does have the freedom according to the United Nations Charter of basic human rights.
It is uncommon to read unbiased articles about Dorje Shugden issue, more so on international mainstream media. Many international mainstream media shy away from the issue because it is controversial, it involves a 400 years old deity practice that “outsider” finds hard to verify and it deeply intertwines in the entangled Tibetan-China political relationship. Therefore, I rejoice for the job well done by the Huffington Post for carrying this unbiased, well researched and factual article; it is very refreshing and encouraging for all Shugdenpas, for a change.
Shugden practice is being accused of threatening the unity of all the Buddhism sects in Tibet. The Huffington Post rightly points out that for the past four centuries, Dorje Shugden was propitiated alongside all these main Buddhism schools without any signs of aggressive purge, as claimed by the HHDL people post 1976.
The only difference between the Shugden practice and the rest of the Tibetan Buddhism practice is almost close to zero. It is really a matter of emphasis. Yet, the ban initiated by HHDL, in all his wisdom, have been fervently actualised by the CTA over the years. Resulting in the ostracisation of the entire Shugden community, and followed by many abuse, beating and threats that ensued on a day-to-day basis. Is it not the exact aggressive purge that threatens the unity of the Buddhism community?
The deity is being demonised further with no basis. And the community is accused of being Chinese spy. Interestingly, the Chinese angle became an opportune played well by the Beijing after they learnt of this fall out and exploit the discord against their arch rival, HHDL. Will HHDL and his think-tank finally admit that it is better to lift the ban so that the Chinese can stop using it to widen the divide?
There is another key issue not being pressed on in this article, which I believe it is out of respect to HHDL. This article did not question why HHDL, a 1989 Nobel Peace Prize Laurette, is not hesitant to show no mercy to his own people practicing Dorje Shugden; which is to go against what he championed for the rest of the world.
Thank you, Rinpoche and the team for this wonderful and uplifting sharing!
There is very encouraging to see Huffington post to give the very fair comments towards the ban. Very important that all the efforts to speak out is not wasted. There are always people notice about it and they do know about it how the Shugden practioners being threatened and discriminated
I do hope more people can help to voice out as the voice of number is the strength to lift the ban. I do hope His Holiness Dalai Lama will not keep quiet further but consider the request to lift the ban immediately.
Thank you Tsem Rinpoche and the team work tirelessly to raise the issue let the world know. Thank you Geshe Kelsang Gyaltso and Kadampa group protested vociferously.
Finally, an objective and refreshing perspective on the Dorje Shugden issue by a reputable and multiple award-winning online news portal like Huffington Post. One particular vital point that the writer mentioned is “the exclusion of Shugden practitioners is not compliant with the Tibetan constitution, nor with Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which embodies the concept of religious freedom.”
Spiritual matters aside, the above alone shows how CTA has failed its citizens. The fact that it openly declares itself to be a democratic government and yet has a section on its official website that explicitly excludes a segment of its citizens due to religious believes, proves what kind CTA will be IF it ever regains their own homeland.
CTA would do better if it unites all its citizens to fight for their country. They could take a page out of Malaysian history to learn how Tuanku Abdul Rahman and his comrades who were from different race and religion, stood united as one voice and managed to gain independence from the British rule.
It is truly encouraging indeed to have unbias and objective reporting about the Tibetan leadership’s ban on the Dorje Shugden practice. For the longest time, unfortunately, majority of the mainstream reporting about this issue has been with rose-tinted glasses, quite heavily favourable towards the H.H. the Dalai Lama and putting aside the difficulties and sufferings of the discriminated Dorje Shugden practitioners.
Kudos also to Huffington Post for not neglecting to touch on issues which has lesser air time. With so much more recent issues and controversies at play, it is commendable that Huffington Post stands true about reporting against discrimination and unfair oppression regardless of how “hot” or “sensationalised” the issue is at the material time. After all, the pain and suffering caused by such unwarranted discriminatory practice is still the reality that is on-going and ought to be addressed even if it is not “de rigueur” or “breaking news”.
In addition, it is apparent from the piece by Huffington post that they have explored the issues factually and rationally in their analysis of the situation. It boldly highlights the discrepancies of the Tibetan leadership’s claims, primarily, the fallacy of Tibetan government denying there is a ban when evidence are aplenty of discrimination and restrictions from them pertaining to Dorje Shugden worship. Then again, only the Tibetan leadership can, in the face of their official parliamentary resolutions condemning Shugden practitioners, dedicated section and hit lists at official government websites to criminalise the Shugden believers, government-funded literature and videos criminalising Shugden worshippers, not to mention actual ostracization and even violence to Shugden practitioners etc, still misleadingly claim there is no ban.
Parking aside the absurdity of the Tibetan leadership’s premise that all Dorje Shugden people automatically are Chinese spies or conspired with China against Tibet, this article also saw the same strong point raised by H.E. the 25th Tsem Rinpoche much earlier, that by removing the Dorje Shugden ban, then (regardless of the truth/existence of such Chinese spies or Chinese links) the opportunity for China to use this against Tibet is eliminated. Hence, all the more reason for the Tibetan leadership to lift its own ban against Dorje Shugden practice.
Thank you Rinpoche and his team for tirelessly and fearlessly speaking up on the Dorje Shugden ban which led to many being made aware of such injustice and even culminated to more exposure, including this reporting by Huffington Post on this issue. May the ban against Dorje Shugden be lifted soon so that many can avail themselves to this great Dharma Protector practice.
It is a GREAT NEWS! ??? Thank you Rinpche for sharing this wonderful news with us. ???
The Huffington Post has cover the Dorje Shugden issue in a very fair and unbiased manner. It’s let everyone in the world know about this issue. At the same time, it also stated how Dorje Shugden people current situation that they are being threaten and discriminated from the Tibetan community.
Finally, there is a media from neutral and liberal side to provide a fair view of the Dorje Shugden issue. Thank you to Huffington Post for this piece of good article which really a voice from thousands of Dorje Shugden practitioners who have suffered in silences for a long time. I hope this will create the worldwide awareness for reviewing the truth.
With great love, kindness, compassion and tolerance, may Dalai Lama lift the ban against Dorje Shugden practitioners. This is the only way that the Tibetan people can be united to live in peace and harmony. ???
Thank you Rinpoche for reproducing and sharing the Huffington Post article that clearly covers the true facts of the sufferings and discrimination endured by many Dorje Shugden’s practitioners due to the ban of Dorje Shugden practice, which was officially started since 20 years ago.
This is a very good news to all of us as the hidden truth is uncovered and being shared accurately through Huffington Post, which is a renowned press media in US and worldwide. Besides, this article will bring out the attention of other non-Buddhists to understand this issue better and hopefully there will be more voices coming out from other peaceful delegates to give more reasonable opinions and suggestions on how to resolve this issue that has caused many Dorje Shugden’s practitioners and lineage masters to continuously suffer by being discriminated, verbally or physically abused, attacked and negatively being sidelined.
Starting from today onwards, may the ban of Dorje Shugden’s practice will be lifted in quicker pace through peaceful dialogues among Buddhist leaders from Tibet, India, China, US, Europe and other countries in order to end the unresolved conflicts, restore the harmony within the Tibetan community and unite all the Buddhists in one big family.
Humbly with folded hands,
kin hoe
A fair article by Huffington Post that addresses a lot of accusations and questions on both sides of the divide. It brought the point that really struck me was that China was allowed to exploit a situation created by the pronouncement of the ban/discrimination and not the other way round. Note the quote from the article: –
So, one should step back and look at the facts with a clear and open mind, as is th case here.
Thank you, Huffington Post for an objective article.
Finally, an unbias extensive coverage of the Dorje Shugden issue in Western press, the Huffington Post no less.
For many years, West activists supported by their heavily prejudiced published articles, have accused Dorje Shugden practitioners of being Chinese spies and the cause of disharmony among Tibetans in exile. These are lies spread by the Central Tibetan Authority in their campaigns against DS practitioners to cover up their own inability to resolve the Tibetan issue with China.
The fact is, Dorje Shugden practitioners especially among the exile community in India are being discriminated and denied their right to the services and facilities provided for Tibetans such as schools, hospitals etc.
Great Dorje Shugden masters who worked hard to spread Dharma and benefit many like our Lama H.E. Tsem Rinpoche and also H.E. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso are being marginalised and subject to cyber bullying just for practising their faith openly.
This is a new dawn for a peaceful solution to the Tibetans’ unity and the harmony of all Buddhists.
The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) have greatly influenced the followers of HH The 14th Dalai Lama (HHDL) in making false allegations that Dorje Shugden people are Chinese paid spies. If they really are so, show proof and use necessary legal means to bring them to justice. But why blame ALL the Dorje Shugden people? Just being seen and photographed with some other people at a gathering/event does not mean that those seen are traitors or paid spies.
Everyone in the free world has their right to worship or practice any religion they want, that is religious freedom. No one has the right to call another religion bad or evil, and to support the negative actions to ‘advise’ others to stop their religious beliefs – this is shown in the video here in which HHDL clearly said so. What ‘advice’ is this when it was put into negative action by the CTA? If Dorje Shugden is an evil spirit (whom he is not) then those who believe so can just stop practising. Go your merry way and let the others who want to do the practice live in peace. The CTA should not incite unrest among Tibetans and cause divisions among them. What type of government does this? Unless they wanted to divert away the attention of their people in some scandals within the CTA. Could it be about money, sex, I’m just saying.
I hope everyone who is against Dorje Shugden practitioners really mean it when you do your completion dedication to all sentient beings, including Dorje Shugden people. If not, where is the love, kindness, compassion taught by HHDL?
Thank you Huffington Post for a good and fair article.
