Ipoh Bans Shooting of Strays
Ipoh bans shooting of strays
By IVAN LOH
IPOH: The Ipoh City Council will implement a ban on the shooting of stray animals with immediate effect.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday after meeting council secretary Datuk Abdul Md Ariff yesterday, Petpositive president T. Anthony Siva Balan said the council had agreed to stop shooting strays and would use other methods to deal with them.
“The council will send its officers to their counterparts in Petaling Jaya next week to learn dog-catching methods,” said Anthony, who is also Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) local councillor.
“They are also studying the possibility of setting up an animal pound to keep animals caught on the streets,” he said.
He said the council would work closely with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in dealing with strays.
“A committee set up by the council will have meetings later to discuss neutering and spaying the animals,” he added.
Anthony also said a representative from the council would visit the 75-year-old owner of Spunk, the therapy dog which was killed by council dog catchers late last month, to apologise for the unfortunate incident.
“Spunk’s sacrifice was not in vain,” said Anthony.
“Pet lovers can finally sleep soundly, knowing that their pets are safe from being shot at,” he added.
On Oct 29, 10-year-old Spunk was shot dead after its owner left it unattended for a while to get toilet paper to clean after the animal.
The killing of the animal drew flak from numerous NGOs, who called for an immediate ban on dog shooting.
Earlier, several NGOs, including Petpositive, Noah’s Ark Ipoh and the Ipoh Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, jointly handed over a memorandum to ban animal shooting to Abdul Md Ariff.

Dear Rinpoche,
Such great news to know that new rules have been implemented so that any stray dogs or other people’s dogs left unattended for a while will not be shot.
This is especially good news because at the very least stray dogs wondering helplessly around any area will not be shot and instead be taken to a dog pound or etc.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing such great news!
Love

This is a very good thing to know. I don’t understand why people would even shoot stray in the first place, don’t people feel any mercy. But at least they have changed this. And they are now using different methods, i feel very happy that there will be less dogs dying now.
I’m happy to hear that. It shows that Malaysia does care. Animals deserve better! I’m very glad to know about this, it means no more animals will have to die under the suffering of gun shots. Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.
Love, beatrix.
It is very nice to read this news on the ban on the shooting of animals.
True that in Malaysia we always see strays around. This situation exists because of many reasons, such as the lack of neutering and spaying, and of course, in some circumstances this is due to those irresponsible owners who just chuck their dogs/cats out when they don’t want them anymore.
While I have not seen with my own eyes how council shoots those strays, but I believe the scene must be both chaotic and inhuman. Truly, I wont know what to do in those situations. I will feel both angry and helpless at the same time.
Is there a discrimination that we only see council shooting dogs but not cats? We may already have the answer.
Finally, the autorities in Malaysia too have good sense for animals.Well Done!!Stray dogs problem can be solve easyly when goverment sector and private sector co-operate to deduct 1cents from the employees salary, like a Epf every month in order to set up bigger shelter for strays dogs.I am sure it will regulate very good and the money will goes in automatically into the Shelter Account. That means the Shelter indirectly create more jobs awareness for unemployed people and same time the people learn to love the animals and they will pass it to the new Generations. What animals means.
For some reason I could only see about half of the post. Is this something on my end or was this on purpose as a teaser?
It is from your end. It is not a teaser.
Syabas to the Ipoh city council for agreeing to implement a ban on the above action with immediate effect. A big hearty thank you to Petpositive President, Mr.T.Anthony for his compassionate attitude in approaching the Ipoh city council to make this possible! The after-meeting proposed arrangements are also very kind humane moves to accommodate the delima. This will certainly create a peace of mind for all pet-lovers and a humane way to dispense off cruel, senseless killing of helpless animal lives. Setting up an animal pound to keep strays is a good idea, instead of heartlessly shooting them down. Neverthless, “spunk’s death” as a wonderful sacrifice has not been in vain. May spunk received devine blessing to take a good rebirth!
I am glad that Pet Positive President T. Anthony Siva Balan has successfully acquired the green light for the ban on shooting of strays from the Ipoh Ciy Council with immediate effect. And will find other ways to get rid of the strays loitering around. The funny thing is Kechara in Kuala Lumpur has been trying to take care of strays dogs and finding homes for them while in Ipoh the Government put down as much stray dogs as possible by shooting them.
I am happy and sad at the same time… posted to my friends on Facebook for awareness.
