James Jameson Bought a Slave to Watch Her Be Eaten by Cannibals
BY JOSH HRALA | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2015
James Jameson, heir to the Jameson Irish Whiskey company, once bought a 10-year-old slave girl for six handkerchiefs because he wanted to sketch the event as cannibals killed, mutilated, and finally, ate her.
According to a report from The New York Times, Jameson had a fascination with cannibalism and wanted to experience the act firsthand.
Jameson was on a trip in Africa in 1890 when an opportunity to fulfill his sick fantasy presented itself because he and his translator happened upon a cannibalistic tribe. Jameson consulted the tribe’s chiefs who told him if he wanted to witness the event, he’d have to buy a slave girl to be killed.
Jameson returned a few minutes later with a 10-year-old girl he bought from a nearby slave trader for six handkerchiefs. The translator then approached the chiefs and said, “This is a present from a white man who desires to see her eaten.”
According to an eye witness report of the scene, the cannibals tied the girl to a tree and stabbed her twice in the belly. The natives then cut pieces off of her body as Jameson sat sketching in his notebook. Jameson and his translator then made their way to chief’s hut where Jameson finished his sketches in watercolor.
In the end, Jameson had six complete watercolors of the cannibal feast. According to a witness, “there were six of them, all neatly done. The first sketch was of the girl as she was led to the tree. The second showed her stabbed, with the blood gushing from the wounds. The third showed her dissected. The fourth, fifth and sixth showed the men carrying the various parts of the body.”
It is unclear if Jameson was ever convicted of any crime involving the incident. However, it does sort of make the new Jameson commercials, such as the one where a likeness of Jameson saves a girl and a barrel of whiskey from a hawk, look a lot more suspicious.
(Correction: This post’s subhead has been changed to reflect that James Jameson was the heir, not the founder, of the Jameson Irish Whiskey company.)

Ooh dear could not imagine a well known man …James Jameson heir to the whiskey empire did such a cruel act. Well he might have his reason to do but I am sure the horrific incident will haunt him foe life. He was the grandson of the man whose signature appears on the whiskey bottles. Heartfelt reading what he did, bought an 11-year-old girl for the price of six handkerchiefs and gave her to a local chief where cannibalism existed at that time in Africa. He witnessed the most horribly sickening sight of the girl being dismembered piece by pieces , cooked and eaten without a particle remained, while he sketched the whole process. This is the most horrific, shocking story I came across.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sad sharing.
Shocking to read……how could someone so cruel to have someone killed so the sake of one’s own benefit. That poor slave girl was yet a human. Jameson will never be forgiven for his action. What goes around will comes around. Could not imagine such a rich man having this cruel and sickening fascination with cannibalism. Killing an animal is already bad enough to witness it and more over it’s a living beings . Worst and shocking story , I came across.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
This is so sick. How can a human see another human killed and being eaten for entertainment? And they whole horror scene just so James can draw it into a painting. This is insane. It is a human life and James just treat the little girl as if she was only an item. Don’t understand why they are cannibals exist in the world.
It always amazes me that someone could be so cold hearted to hurt or harm another human being what more to eat them. The cannibalistic tribe eat human flesh due to their ancestral practice whereby during war with each other, they eat the enemy as they believed that the enemy’s life force will add to their own giving them greater strength/power.
However what James Jameson did was cold heartedly bought a young slave to be given to the Chief of the cannibalistic tribe, as if buying a possession and giving it away without any regards to human life at all. It really shows how life was so cheap then to be bought with six handkerchiefs and taken away just as easily. I wonder if James convinced himself that he is just researcher who is interested to document the subject and not the sick minded person that he is.
The cannibals themselves aren’t any better too, especially when there is no longer any greater significance than just pleasure consumption. To them, human is just another form of animal, to be consumed as meat. I guess that was the way of life then in Africa as the slave girl seem to accept and understood her fate to be eaten.
What is shocking to me is that this person considered the little slave he bought, was less than goods you buy at a convenient store. He probably considered the little slave less than the spittle at the corner of one’s mouth.
I think he probably has really not so good karma and many wrong views that brought him to act out this particular act. Om benza wiki vitrana soha, may his future lives he discover true paths and true doctrines.
I get shock with this articles about cannibalism. This James Jameson only think about own benefit (fascination on cannibalism and want experience in firsthand )and sacrifice a 10year old girl.
I can realize that how important of dharma for us to be compassion and benefit to every sentient beings.Jameson’s action is really created a bad karma to himself. This also can be applied to kill animals and serve it as our foods. We shall change our daily meals to vege meals.
Thanks Rimpoche for sharing this article which can inspire many people to become vegetarian.(myself not vegetarian yet but I’m eating much less meat compared with previous time).
With folded hands,
Jason
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this.
I think many of us still have a ‘little child’ in us who is ‘curious’ of what will happen when we do this or that. Our ‘little children’ likes to experiment and try out things. It is just that different people have different limits on how far they can go to try things out, to satisfy their curiosity. Some people can reach the extend of sacrificing lives in their quest to find the answers to their questions. I do not know..probably is our conscience that dictates how deep we are willing to delve to find out things..
Hi Boon,
While I agree with you about the curiosity and the extent people can go to find the answers to their questions, I think people’s horror with this whole thing is more to do with the exploitation of a race that was perceived to be inferior, and the fact this incident seems to have been forgotten by history.
I could be wrong but I really doubt James Jameson would have done the same thing to a white person. Meaning he pays for cannibals to eat a slave because he can and because they are lower than him, rather than because he’s genuinely curious in the act for any kind of research, anthropological or scientific purposes. It seems nothing was produced by this event that as significant enough to make an impact in science.
Thank you,
Pastor Jean Ai
Thanks Pastor for your feedback,
I agree with you. Human has the tendencies to satisfy their curiosity probably not for science but for personally satisfaction. The fact is that they often used ‘specimens’ that they view as lower than them. They view their ‘specimens’ as ‘things’ that do not feel anything or they sometimes want to see pain and emotion when they ‘experiment’ with with specimens.
Thank you,
Boon
This is greatly upsetting on so many levels. Firstly this just goes to show on a surface level how people thought during during this period. A lot of people still thought of other cultures as backward, barbaric and the like. This to me is an example how someone just wanted to show this to the world.
The second shows the sadistic attitude of Mr James Jameson. I mean he bought the slave girl for the sole purpose of having her killed so he could draw the horrific scene. This is something very twisted,as the account does not mention if he had any remorse at all.
Thirdly, is the act itself. Most people around the world these days would think this an extremely negative act, but only because it was carried out by a human. If the same thing was done by an animal, most people would just claim that it was nature. In fact they are right, it IS nature, but the nature of Samsara. To be bound by karma and delusions, and be in situations where if one is not conscious of this, one perpetuates this suffering again and again. A very horrifying story indeed.
This is absolutely horrifying, but I agree with what Stella had written, if we find this disturbing, then what about the animals we consume on a daily basis? They were once sentient beings too, why is our ‘double-standard way’ of looking at things so strong that it only applies to our fellow human beings? Can’t we see that we’ve turned extremely selfish to the point that we are blinded by our ignorance, we should respect every single sentient being as we are all equal.
This is the worst story i ever read. How on earth human being could do this 🙁 . _()_
If we find the behavior of James Jameson and the cannibal tribe gross and disturbing, then we should find consuming meat equally gross and disturbing. There is no difference, to me, between the 10 year old girl and the cow, or the pig, the chicken, or the lamb that are being butchered, dissected and eaten on a daily basis, on a massive scale. Yes, we can all argue until no end that there is difference between a human girl and a cow / pig / chicken / lamb. But if we look at them from the point of view of their ability to feel suffering, then, we are all the same. Animals are not born to be the defacto food on our plate. As human, we can choose our food; it can be vegetable, meat, or in the case of this article, another human being. Since we can choose to not eat another human being, why is it so difficult to stop eating another sentient being (i.e. animal)?
The bottom line is, all animals, like human, can feel pain; some of them are more sensitive than human due to their physical construe.
Thank you Rinpoche for this article.
Humbly, bowing down,
Stella Cheang
Dear Stella,
I like how you compare this single act of condoning cannibalism to a much worse atrocity, which is the mass slaughter of farm animals for our dinner plate. I think human beings as a whole, are cold and unwilling to see that animals suffer in the process of getting to our dinner plate.
The funny thing is that people know at the back of their minds how much animals suffer but would rather deny this fact and pretend that today’s technology would afford a painless death for animals. However, when made to watch videos of how animals are really slaughtered, they cannot stomach it and they cannot finish watching the whole video.
As we continue to pretend that such sufferings don’t exist, we continue to perpetuate the exploitation of animals and the cold and callous part of human nature. It doesn’t end here, in fact, people eventually extend this exploitation and violence towards each other as well. That’s the scary part and it shows how important it is to develop compassion for others.
Thank you Pastor David.
