Kadurugoda purana Viharaya
From TheBuddhism.Net
Historical Kadurugoda Purana Vihara dates back to Gauthama Buddha’s time. Buddha statues, coloured tiles and coins dating back to 1st Parakumba, Malla, Leelawathi and Buwenakabahu’s time has been excavated from the site.
Gauthama Buddha, when He visited Sri Lanka to solve the fight between the two brothers Chulodara & Mahodara, relaxed in this place since this was the coolest area in the Jaffna peninsula. During the 16th century, Jaffna was ruled by a very cruel king named Sangili.
Because of him, Sixty Arahanths from Punkuduthivu island was going to India and on their way, stayed here. A mushroom curry served to them by the villagers had poisoned all of them and they had died on the spot. Their ashes were buried and 60 dagabos were built on the site. Today, 56 has been found from excavations.

Kadurugoda Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple situated in Chunnakam, , Sri Lanka. The temple is one of the few Buddhist temples remaining in Jaffna
This is a very interesting collection of ancient brick mounds of varied sizes and designs. These ancient brick mounds seem to be the oldest around 2,000 years old. There are folklores and legends which reveal some stories related to this Kadurugoda Vihara. It seem that because of a cruel king named Sangili., Sixty Arahanths died and were buried there and considered to be memorials for the dead . This temple has been declared as an archaeological site in Sri Lanka now.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.
Sad to hear about the arhats, bad karma for the villager who killed the arhats, though the arhats also had the karma to die in such a manner it is unfortunate.
