Would you eat stem cell-grown bacon?
From: davidlai.me
I ask this question because scientists are on the brink of a breakthrough with the latest technology of replicating meat. In order to find a solution to the growing demand for food production and to counter global warming, Dutch scientists have developed a way to grow edible bacon in the lab with stem cells taken from pigs.
This lab-grown meat is said to be the consistency of scallops and at this early stage in the research, scientists have not dared to taste the meat yet. However, although the meat does not resemble or taste like the real deal yet, this new technology has tremendous potential to provide cheaper alternative to stave off world hunger, make slaughterhouses obsolete and curb global warming.
However, some health experts have expressed their concerns that consuming lab-processed meat could potentially reveal unknown health problems and deficiencies. There are other experts that have also expressed concerns of the adverse effects on the agricultural ecosystems with the reduction of our dependency on livestock and farm animals.
However, if this technology is perfected, scientists believe that they would be able to produce tastier meat that might actually be more nutritious than the real thing. Just imagine a hamburger that prevents heart attack instead of causing them. Therefore, scientists are optimistic as they think that the benefits of this technology far outweigh the risks. I definitely wouldn’t mind having this sort of meat because no animal had to die for my dinner. It is definitely the way to go for a guilt-free dining experience of the future!

The planet is suffering under the strain of pollution, deforestation, loss of arable land, unstable weather patterns, desertification and etc and a big contributor of that is due to livestock farming. With Livestock farming it really stresses the planet to the MAX. With increasing population the planet cannot simply endure the the rate of the growth of meat demand.

Well! i definitely will not like to eat the stem -cell grown meat! Thinking on , the true reasons why the scientist have to invent these meat it show that the meat-farm are real damage to the environment.
These meat let me think about the mock meat . Will our next generation consume these stem -cells meat ? Anyway, best if we can just be a vegetarian
this is a good idea, but until this technology is perfected, i will not eat meat because they kill animals that are needed to produce the meat. if this technology is perfected i might eat it if it is healthy, but as long as it saves lives i will be fine. thank you for sharing Rinpoche.
No, I’d rather not as it makes me squeamish. What exactly is it? Er, what if each “cell” grows into a pig in my stomach? I’d be infested with hogs, no thank you. Don’t need to, don’t have to, not unless it’s a famine situation and there’s no other choice to survive! There are enough options in the world to have to resort to this. Anyway hats off to the R&D scientists who try.
Thanks for the sharing. It would be a better alternative then meat derive from a living creature who need to be killed to obtain it.
At least we hope not to get any negative karma from consuming it.
Dear Rinpoche,
It is great that scientists are working hard to come out with such things such as stem cell grown bacon but for me… I would like the scientists not dare to try it yet till the day that it is globally approved by groups such as PETA that animals are not injured in the producing or experiments towards the producing of stem celled bacon.
Quite a wonder but for now I would stay away from such foods!
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing!

It’s good to know that scientists are finding alternatives for meat to prevent animals from going to slaughterhouses and curbing global warming. This new technology will benefit many meat lovers who can dine guilt free yet enjoy the food. However, it does not appeal to me as I have no craving for meat.
“Stemnivorous vegetarian” – a person who eats meat from stem cells and is vegetarian
I created this phrase 😀
It is nice to know that scientists are putting effort into finding alternatives for foods that usually require slaughter.. I would eat stem cell-grown bacon as long as no sentient being is harmed excessively. When this goes into the market, less animals will have to suffer for our bellies woot!
And yes! I would definitely eat stem cell meat which is not killed !
Please see this 😉 ! Scientists already made burger from stem cells meat:
