Mary Poppins star feared death after apparently falling asleep on his surfboard but friendly sea creatures pushed him to shore.
On screen, Dick Van Dyke has been rescued from untimely death by flying cars and magical nannies. Off screen, the veteran star of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins had to rely on the help of a pod of porpoises after apparently dozing off aboard his surfboard. “I’m not kidding,” he said afterwards.
Van Dyke’s ordeal began during an ill-fated trip to his local beach. “I woke up out of sight of land,” the 84-year-old actor told reporters. “I started paddling with the swells and I started seeing fins swimming around me and I thought ‘I’m dead!’”
Van Dyke was wrong. “They turned out to be porpoises,” he said. “And they pushed me all the way to shore.” The porpoises were unavailable for comment.
Van Dyke made his screen debut on the Phil Silvers Show before bagging his own TV sitcom in 1961. His film credits include Bye Bye Birdie, Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Dick Tracy, while his TV drama Diagnosis: Murder ran from 1993 to 2001. In recent years he has appeared on screen in Night at the Museum and its 2009 sequel

Awesome post of porpoises rescued Dick Van Dyke an American actor, comedian, writer, and singer. Well no one could imagine a school of porpoises could do that. During an ill-fated trip, surfing the actor fall asleep and later realised he was surrounding by fins . In the neat of time those porpoises pushed him all the way to shore. Wow…. Happy ending.
It proven that animals do have feelings, they are men best friends. Do give them love, care and never harm them. They are loyal and can feel gratitude, are better off than a lot of humans.
Hard to accept but it’s true. Animals can detect distress and offer help when needed. In this case, it’s weird but I think porpoises are intelligent animals and they know that he needed help.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this.
Dick Van Dyke has claimed dolphins rescued him during a boating accident after he found himself adrift at sea on a surfboard.Amazing.
A lesson to learn for those who read this post.
It show that animals can be compassionate as human and do have feelings too. We should then be loving, caring and kind to all animals .Never abused or hurt them.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this beautiful post.
Lol @ ”The porpoises were unavailable for comment.” But well done to the porpoises.
This is so heart warming, even animals can be so compassionate to humans. And isn’t it very ungrateful and cruel of humans to ‘repay’ back their kindness by killing them? They are such friendly and kind creatures, why kill something that does not threaten or harm us?
Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.
Love, beatrix.
See? Animals are amazing. And they are so kind and caring to humans. I don’t think that this dolphin even knew who this man was. Its so cool how the dolphin still had no clue who the person was and yet, it still saved his life by pushing him to shore, what an intelligent creature.
People should show the same kindess back to dolphins.
This is amazing. Richard Wayne Van Dyke was saved by a very cute porpoise when he fallen asleep while surfing. The wild porpoise doesn’t know anything about Richard and it still save Richard because of its compassion to all beings. There is so many animals being killed by humans for their meat, and they saved humans and getting nothing back is this fair to them? If you want to pay back their kindness, be a vegetarian! Thank you for reading
It must have been such a helpless feeling when Dick woke up knowing that he had drifted so far away from the land seeing fins swimming around.
These little creatures, however, were clever. They perhaps have sensed that someone was above the surfboard and were intelligent enough to know what to do.
Dolphins are intelligent animals. How nice will that be that humans can stop harming these sea creatures and let them live in their world happily and safely.
I don’t always agree with your posts, but this was dead on, way to go!
Just for break to relax can sometimes cost you your life. Like Dick Van Dyke the actor. Being an actor who had been working very hard they need relaxation. Most people would like to lie drifting afloat in the sea. Dick Van Dyke 84 years old was resting on a floating surfboard when he fell asleep not knowing that the surfboard has floated faraway from the shore. When Dick woke up he got a shock of his life, He panicked but with good karma he has, was that he was saved from untimely death by someone. It was the porpoises who saved him and they were pushing him on his surfboard to safety back to shore. In past lives he must have saved these sea creatures lives.
It is stated that kharma is certain, positive karma will certainly bring positive result of some form of happiness-Negative karma will bring negative result of some form of sufferings. Karma generated by virtuous minds of love, compassion, patience and generosity will only bring happiness and never be a source of suffering. Therefore, in Dick Van Dyke episode on how he was rescued by a pod of porpoises pushing him back all the way to the shore when he was drifted off-shore out to the open sea in his sleep on his surf-board, could berelated to his good karma generated in his past lives. Good virtuous actions done are never lost until ripen into its propiate result which definetly bring good rewards. This may take lifetimes to occur until such time as circumstances are gathered for it to ripen into its effect, as written in the Vinaya Sutra:- “Actions will not be wasted even with the passing of a hundred aeons. When the right causes and circumstances meet, the fruits of embodied beings will ripen”.
Animals can be so kind to human beings. We must be kind to them too!
