Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Starship…
Dear friends,
When I was in the US, I had a huge wide taste in music from classics, to rock, pop and wide range of groups/solo singers I like. Of course my all time top favorite is Madonna, but I like many others. I picked some of the songs I like to share with you. I thought during the day/whenever, when you need a break, it would be nice and convenient for you to just come here and listen. I want you to enjoy.
My brand of dharma is not tight and conventional. I like people to be themselves, have some ‘attachments’ for now and just enjoy also. But that does not mean I don’t want or expect serious dharma, it’s just I understand that in this day and age there are all types of people and we shouldn’t change who they are but help them to be better at what they are. Acceptance and respect is the key.
I enjoyed the movie PRACTICAL MAGIC with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman very much. Watch it… It was shot in Washington state and I love the pacific Northwest very much. The story is genuine, warm, magical and also touching. I’ve watched it many times. It has some supernatural in it which I like very much. I do recommend it to you. There were two songs in it that really touched me and I have posted it here. They are Crystal by Stevie Nicks and If You Ever Did Believe by Stevie Nicks/Sheryl Crow. I love Stevie Nick’s voice, her movements when she performs and her dress style. It’s very relaxed, gypsy, hippyish, and creative. She evokes an era that I like but was way too young too appreciate at that time, which is the 70’s. A time when youth were aware and interested in important social issues. Who used their lives for betterment of social issues they believed in…I enjoy Stevie’s voice and her songs very much. Of course she is from Fleetwood Mac which I totally like. I love their Rumours album. I have posted some of their songs here such as Landslide, The Chain, and Sara. Very nice.
I wasn’t really into Tom Petty, but on this song with Stevie (Stop Dragging My Heart Around) his voice is clear, tenor and just a pleasure to listen to. Stevie and Tom Petty are a great duo for sure. Stevie Nicks’ voice evoks a time long passed and can only be relieved in my memory and these songs accompany the memory very well…
Whether you know these artists or they are past your time is not the point, good music is timeless.
I really like Jefferson Starship. The lead male lead vocal is FANTASTIC. I LIKE HIS SUPER TENOR VOICE. When I was in high school, I sang tenor in choir and enjoyed that. For a play in High School, I sang the song from broadway called ONE and passed the audition with flying colors. I rehearsed with a friend who played piano and I sang. Fun. We did our own music… all that stopped because I had to leave home at 16 for good…
I really like Robert Plant’s supersonic voice of Led Zeppelin. I posted Stairway To Heaven here because it starts out soft and relaxed (as relaxed as Robert Plant can be) and then towards the end he just screams…I love it. I love this type of powerful high pitched tenor voice that just comes from nowhere and is super strong. I love tenors.
Well I love the group Heart also with Anne and Nancy Wilson. Their songs Magic Man, Dogs & Butterfly and others I will post another time, but they have fantastic voices. They are sisters. Their music is fantastic to me.
Anyway listen to the two Jefferson Starship songs I posted here and enjoy. Notice the male lead’s voice… wow!!!! Amazing vocal range. I love people with this type of range.
Enjoy your day with the music I’ve posted up.

Do you always trust your first initial feeling
Special knowledge holds truth bears believing
I turned around
And the water was closing all around
Like a glove
Like the love that had finally, finally found me
Then I knew
In the crystalline knowledge of you
Drove me thru the mountains
Thru the crystal-like clear water fountain
Drove me like a magnet
To the seaHow the faces of love have changed turning the pages
And I have changed oh, but you…you remain ageless
I turned around
And the water was closing all around
Like a glove
Like the love that had finally, finally found me
Then I knew
In the crystalline knowledge of you
Drove me thru the mountains
Thru the crystal-like clear water fountain
Drove me like a magnet
To the sea

I took my love and I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
The Landslide brought it downOh mirror in the sky, what is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changing ocean tides
Can I handle the seasons of my life?Mmm mmm I don’t know
Mmm mmmWell I’ve been ‘fraid of changing ‘cause I
Built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older, I’m getting older tooSoo (Interlude)
I’ve been ‘fraid of changing ‘cause I
I built my life around you
But time makes you bolder, children get older
I’m getting older too
I’m getting older too
Soo take this love, take it down
Ohh if you climb a mountain and you turn around
If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down, down
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills,
Well maybe, the landslide will bring it down
Well well the landslide with bring it down

You’ve left me now
and it’s seasoned my soul
And with every step you take,
I watch another part of you go…I continue to build a wall…
You were so strong,
I fell to my knees…
And I don’t think I can handle this at all…One more night
I’d like to lie and hold you
Yes and feel…
To make you smile,
I’d like to be there for you–
Have you forgotten me?And the days go by
Doing nothing about them…
How much time
will I have to spend? My mind won’t rest
and I don’t sleep
Not even in my dreams…If you ever did believe,
for my sake…
If you ever did believe….And the days go by
Doing nothing about them…
How much time
will I have to spend?ooo….ooo…..ooo…
Ooo baby don’t leave me
ooo..ooo…ooo…ooo
I’m down on my knees…
ooo..ooo…ooo…ooo
begging you please…
ooo…ooo…ooo…ooo
baby don’t leave me….
Did you ever believe?

Wait a minute baby…
Stay with me awhile
Said you’d give me light
But you never told be about the fireDrowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
And now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter anymore
When you build your house
Call me homeAnd he was just like a great dark wing
Within the wings of a storm
I think I had met my match, he was singing
And undoing the laces
Undoing the lacesDrowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
And now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter anymore
When you build your house
Call me homeHold on
The night is coming and the starling flew for days
I’d stay home at night all the time
I’d go anywhere, anywhere
Ask me and I’m there because I careSara, you’re the poet in my heart
Never change, never stop
And now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter what for
When you build your house
I’ll come byDrowning in the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
And now it’s gone
It doesn’t matter anymore
When you build your house
Call me homeAll I ever wanted
Was to know that you were dreaming
(There’s a heartbeat
And it never really died)

Walk softly through the desert sands
Careful where you tread
Underfoot are the visions lost
Sleeping not yet deadHang on – Winds starting to howl
Hang on – The beast is on the prowl
Hang on – Can you hear the
strange cry
Winds of change are blowing byMountains crumble and cities fall
Don’t come to an end
Just lie scattered on the
desert floor
Waiting for the windChorus
You got your life planned carefully
But you left out one detail
The hidden hand deals just one round
And the winds of change prevailChorus
Walk softly through the desert sand
Old dreams lead the way
Nothing new in the sands of time
Just changes every dayHang on – It’s starting again
Hang on – There’s no shelter from
the wind
Hang on – Like a fire from the sky

Another super tenor I like so much. I didn’t like them much when I was in the states, but later in my 30’s I started to appreciate them alot. What a haunting song. Reminds me of when I was at the airport in L.A. leaving America for good to go India. I looked to the west and cried….. If a movie is done of my life, I would love this song to be playing at the part when I left US for India for ordination. Tsem Rinpoche
There’s a lady who’s sure all that glitters is gold
And she’s buying the stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she’s buying the stairway to heaven. There’s a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
‘Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.
In a tree by the brook, there’s a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder. There’s a feeling I get when I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving.
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees,
And the voices of those who stand looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder. And it’s whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter. If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow, don’t be alarmed now,
It’s just a spring clean for the May queen.
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There’s still time to change the road you’re on.
And it makes me wonder.Your head is humming and it won’t go, in case you don’t know,
The piper’s calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind. And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll. And she’s buying the stairway to heaven

Some of these beautiful and timeless classic songs which I heard during my teen days. Love Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” then and now.It is a song that I never get bored no matter how many times I listen to it. And the timeless appeal of Stevie Nicks !!”Of all the elite bands of the Seventies, they are the only one touring with the same lineup in 1975.”
Thank you Rinpoche, the beautiful lyrics of these songs recall fond memories.
I like Jefferson Starship’s “Winds of Change” so much, their voice are very powerful. Rinpoche introduced to me and explain about their history which made this song even more meaningful.
I seldom listen to pop, rock or band but more on classical, even if I do I listen to Chinese pop song than Western songs. Rinpoche always make us to try something new (nothing bad), expose to more new things that I myself will not go and find out. Rinpoche always want us to don’t scare of trying, we never try we never know.
As how Milarepa spread dharma through songs (http://blog.tsemtulku.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/2010/10/milarepas-cave.html), Rinpoche has also used songs of varieties to spread dharma to beings like us who are “attached” to beautiful sound through the lyrics embedded in the songs.

I like to share this song, “Everybody Hurts” by The Corrs.

Enjoy. 🙂
Oops typed too fast – TALKING HEADS – the rock band.
And while at this must not forget Blondie! The Pretenders as well!
I love many of them! Starship – “We Built This City” and “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” – are songs so good to play and sing. Stevie Nicks too, Fleetwood Mac – Dreams, her vocals are just so unique!
There just something about music, lyrics and vocals how they reach out to us in many ways and give us companionship through good and bad times. I am brought back to the 80’s to the songs my older brothers played and introduced me to lots of music from pop to rock, heavy metal, especially slow rock. Nothing like Styx ( Love Dennis deYoung -Desert Moon), The Police, David Bowie, plus so many others …and Queen especially Queen! love Queen! Well we are always singing at home- what do your do when you cant beat them? Join them!
And Stairway To Heaven – who can ever forget that! Plus “Black Dog”, “Rock and Roll” . Other hot favorites Cats Stevens – “Year of the Cat” , Peter Gabriel – “Sledge Hammer” “Talking Heads” the list goes on.
And yes, listening to them – instrumental music, jazz, acid jazz, R & B etc ( Ah- The Average White Band is Good) at times just inspirational, contemplative and joy. And singing them – good for de-stressing – that’s why we hang out quite a bit in Kechara Care!
Thank you for posting and sharing Rinpoche.
Our song list / repertoire will increase with everyone’s sharing and suggestion of good songs.
Let the music play!
The only band I know here is Led Zeppelin and I never fancy their songs or their style of music except for Stairway to Heaven. I practically grew up and grew old with this song. I still have the CD in my car! Even after all these years, I still love this song.
My mum love Starship so much… she named me after one of their songs… haha…
Dear Rinpoche,
It is rare to find wonderful lead singer whom will intrigue us thruout the decades..I am a Zeppelin fan and have been listening to their songs since my college years..Stairway to Heaven is indeed a classic tribute to the dawn of the rock era! Another wonderful song to listen from LedZep is D’yer M’ker..which is a little different genre from the classic LedZep style with powerful Plant’s voice and Jimmy Page’s heavy riff. Other songs that rock thru the era incl Immigrant Song, When the Levee Breaks, and Kashmir. Wish the Led Zep could do a reunion album..but of coz minus the memorable percussion rhythm of John Bonham (RIP)- one of greatest drummer in rock history!
Dear Rinpoche,
If you’d allow me to be a little unconventional for a moment…you rock! Such a fantastic and varied taste in music, and of course Led Zeppelin are just a joy. The drummer in my band is obsessed with Led Zeppelin and he suggested doing a cover of the song “Dazed and Confused” to which I replied, “If I could sing like Robert Plant, I’d hardly be in an unsigned band!” Still, I had to admire his audacity!
Sometimes I think it’s good just to relax and enjoy some music or light reading or writing etc. Of course, Dharma practice is vital, but we all have extremely heavy attachments and perhaps – so long as it doesn’t harm anyone – a little indulgence now and then is healthy for people like me who still have a very long way to go in terms of spiritual development. I suppose it’s similar to the fitness instructors who advocate placing your healthy diet aside and eating whatever you like for one day every so often.
Thank you for sharing this post. With the greatest of respect to all spiritual teachers, it’s not often you come across one with such good taste in music.
May I humbly offer you a song by an artist called Richard Ashcroft, which I think you’ll enjoy. He puts a lot of soul into his music and personally, I rate him up there with the likes of John Lennon, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan in terms of his song-writing.
Please enjoy. I hope you are well,
With kindest regards,
Sandy

When I’m low, and I’m weak, and I’m lost
I don’t know who I can trust
Paranoia, the destroyer, comes knocking on my door
You know the pain drifts to days, turns to nights
But it slowly will subside
And when it does, I take a step, I take a breath
And wonder what I’ll find
Can you hear what I’m saying?
Got my mind meditating on love, love
Feel what I’m saying
Got my mind meditating on love, love
(The human condition)
(The human condition)
Too much blood, too much hate, turn off the set
There’s got to be something more
When Mohammed, Allah, Buddha, Jesus Christ
Are knocking down my door
I’m agnostic getting God, but man
She takes a female form
There’s no time, no space, no law
We’re out here on our own
Can you hear what I’m saying?
Got my mind meditating on love, love
Feel what I’m saying
Got my mind meditating on love, love
[Check the meaning]
[The human condition]
[Check the feeling]
[The human condition]
Guess it’s life, doing it’s thing
Making you cry, making you think
Yeah life, dealing it’s hand
Making you cry and you don’t understand
Life, doing it’s thing
Making you cry now, making you think of
Pain, doing it’s thing
Making you cry yeah, making you sing
Don’t say it, don’t say it’s too late
Don’t, don’t say it’s too late (It’s never too late, it’s never too late)
Don’t, don’t say it’s too late (It’s never too late)
Don’t, don’t say it’s too late
The human condition, the big decisions
The human condition, the big decisions
I’m like a fish with legs, I fell from the tree
I made a rocket (check the meaning), I made a wheel
I made a rocket (check the feeling), I swam the ocean (check the meaning)
I saw the moon (say a prayer), I seen the universe (and beyond)
I see you (check the feeling), I see me (check the meaning)
That’s my reality
And while the city sleeps we go walking
It’s a beautiful world
And when the city sleeps we go walking
We find a hole in the sky and then we start talking
And then we say “Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ
Buy us some time, buy us some time”
Hear what I’m saying
Can you hear what I’m saying?
Can you hear what I’m saying?
Can you hear what I’m saying?
It’s gonna be alright
Dear Tsem Tulku Rinpoche !!!
Thank you for these postings. I don’t know all of these songs – I will discover some of them now – but I am also very sensitive to how much “pop culture” has to offer if one listens to it … and puts it into perspective. Many insights came to me in my youth while listening to these songs … and lots of them helped me and inspired me on the way in one way or another. And indeed, there is something about “Stairway to Heaven” … not only the lyrics and the song as a whole … but the guitar intro has something magic. How interesting that it’s probably one of the first things that any guitar player learns, and even still today …
Life is really filled with so many sources of inspiration. As it is said in Indian thought, the world is Maya. But I happen to think that this Maya and her beauty can take us both ways … to Samsara or to Nirvana, depending on how we approach it.
Thank you for your good inspirations through so many different channels !!!
A lot of good inspirations and of good energies for your Dharma work !!!
