Saffron still holds a high value as a spice used mainly for cooking . I think today it is getting very pricey due to the demand of using it as an alternative treatment for various health conditions and as an offering for prayers.
I love to add saffron in my cooking just to see the beauty of the colour and at times for my hot milk drink.

We were taught to add saffron to our water offering, because we want to offer the best to the Buddha and Deities; as saffron is a wonderful wat to add natural richness and color to the water we offer up. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this write up about the benefits of saffron, we should add saffron in our daily dietary whenever we can. I did a bit of “googling” about saffron and am amazed to learn that the flower that saffron is derived from is actually a beautiful purple flower called Saffron Crocus. Saffron has a long history of its usage and trade. It is highly sought after and prices vary according to the type and source of the flower. There was even a war sparked by saffron centuries ago.

Thank you Rinpoche for highlighting the medicinal benefits of saffron. In our house, saffron is purchased for offering to the Buddha. Will get more supply to try out some of the natural health remedy mentioned in the article.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this wonderful information about the multiple health benefits of saffron. May be i should start adding some saffron into my diet and also add into water for water offerings to buddhas.
Though saffron, a medicinal spice, is known to provide significant cognitive benefits to what our bodies need, it is also used, to be added into our “water offering” to make it more rich and beautiful. In buddhism, it is also emphasized that, “we should make offerings to the enlightened beings as though we would to a King visiting our home.” So therefore, Rinpoche has stated that he has been using saffron for decades in his offerings to the Buddhas daily. Many heartfelt thanks for the kind sharing, Rinpoche. Om mani padme hung.
Thank you Rinpoche for the sharing. In the past ,I only knew that Saffron is used in preparing food as a source of colouring agent and the pleasant aroma it gives out after cooking it.Later I found out that,It is important to prepare a strong dose of it with warm water to be given to mothers who had just delivered a newborn. They say that it promote the recovery of the new mother under confinement,as it would dissolve the clotting in the womb .
After reading this blog comment,It does make sense for the older generation to promote this potent spice to many generation to come.
It’s interesting to note that Saffron has so many uses ranging from anti-oxidant to skin-care, apart from its use in cooking.
I read that it takes about 75,00 saffron blossoms to produce a pount of saffron spice : no wonder it is a very expensive item.
Thank you for sharing this information. I love saffron. I once had saffron on in a lemon drink at What Tasty Food and it was amazing.
Wow! Saffron has so much health benefits and for some reason, saffron is highly prized in Buddhism too. Perhaps, the Buddha knew of its medicinal properties and used it to symbolize the medicinal qualities of the monk’s robes/ vows. The Buddha was often likened to a physician, the Dharma as medicine and the Sangha to be the nurses and supporting staff. This is how the Dharma is to be regarded so the Dharma would sink into our mindstreams.
Saffron can be use for medicine and also for some food recipe , it so much benefits. Thank you Rinpoche sharing this information, i can add in saffron for the water offering in next time 🙂
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing these infromation and also the FB link. There are really a lot of simple daily food remedies for what our bodies need. Very useful! Safron is not only used traditionally… I’m sure that it have been a very effective treatment and for maintenance of health as it is something that have been used for centuries.
Medically, Saffron is also used to treat symptoms of depression, PMS, menstrual cramps and Alzheimer which were all proved scientifically.
Good saffron though is really expensive. However it is not too costly since we only need to use a pinch of saffron in normal consumption.
Thank you for rinpoche and everyone sharing!

This is very informative.
saffron is a labour-intensive crop, which means that saffron commands a high price; each crocus produces just three swhich are hand-picked and then dried, and it takes thousands of stigmas to make just one ounce of the spice. Happily, the flavour is better if you use just a little – too much, and it tastes too bitter.
The main saffron-growing countries are India, Iran, Spain, Greece and Italy, although it was once grown in Saffron Walden, Essex, hence the town’s name.
One of the many amazing benefits of saffron is for treatment of acne and blemishes:
The antifungal content of saffron makes it effective for the treatment of acne, blemishes and blackheads.
Mix 5-6 basil leaves with 10-12 strands of saffron to make a fine paste.
Apply this on your face
Wash off with cold water after 10 to 15 minutes.
This will help to remove acne and pimples.
Basil leaves can clean the bacteria that cause acne and pimples. Apply saffron soaked milk on your face twice a day to help in clearing blemishes.

Thank you, Rinpoche, for the information. Saffron is also used as a beauty aid to whiten the skin. To make a wonderful beverage, you might want to try this: Add a few strands of saffron to hot milk. i have been buying Saffron of the Taj Mahal brand for years – and watching the price climb steadily to the dizzying figure now! However, the smell of good fresh saffron is so uplifting; and helps to calm my nerves 🙂 from the shock of its dizzy price :-O
Hi Benji, thank you for the information. I will add in saffron to hot milk for Rinpoche.
Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this information. Besides use mainly in various cuisines as a seasoning and colouring agent, Saffron has many other benefits besides what Rinpoche mentioned here. Saffron can also be used for asthma, whooping cough and to loosen phlegm. It is also used for sleep problem like insomnia, heartburn and dry skin. Some people apply saffron directly to the scalp for baldness and it is said to induce sweating as well.
Saffron is mostly cultivated and harvested by hand, thus due to the amount of labor involved it is considered one of the world’s most expensive spices.
