Elvira and Aunty Virus
When I was kid growing up in the US, I LOVED horror movies. I still love horror movies to relax. Elvira was a Horror movie hostess. She would introduce the movies every week and also spew little commentaries in between the commercial breaks. She livened up the sometimes low budget B-grade horror movies with her silly joke and sidekicks. Elvira was pretty popular for a while.
This video shows Elvira doing her show when her Aunty Virus crashes the show and how Elvira tries to get rid of Aunty Virus ‘ruining’ her show… hehehehe
Elvira was good clean fun and on Halloween she would guest star in alot of shows, etc…

“And watch those hands, I only look like I’m up for grabs!!!” says Aunty Virus. She sure is funny!!!hahaha
You gotta listen up for all of Aunty Virus’ jokes…they are so not funny that they end up funny… hehe… Aunty Virus just invaded Elvira’s show without letting her know and Elvira is trying to ‘politely’ get rid of Aunty Virus… funny. Many of Elvira’s videos are on the YouTube. I love YouTube… what a great service it provides… THANK YOU YOUTUBE!!

Elvira is an American actress, writer singer and a horror movie hostess. She is best known for her portrayal of the horror hostess character Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. VERY entertaining, its funny, and just nice to watch.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing …. Very funny and stimulating.
Elvira is very funny. Rinpoche has a great sense of humor! Unfortunately, I have not been fortunate enough to grow up watching Elvira as she is out of my time but I can still remember watching her cameos in the Simpsons.
Hope Rinpoche has a great night!
Dear Rinpoche, I don’t get Aunty Virus’s jokes because the English words that she uses are very deep, all I know is that they are acting as vampires and telling jokes. But when Elvira tell jokes, she always looked at the camera, I don’t know were she suppose to looked at the cameras or not it really confuses me. I hope I could understand the jokes
Humour is just one of Rinpoche’s many skillful ways of delivering the Dharma to our level. Let us not mistake that as the Guru’s level of teaching or think that the Guru can only teach us in this way.
Rinpoche has a knack and uncanny ability to teach according to the audience’s needs and ability to understand or absorb.
What David wrote is true, Rinpoche will use humour in a very skillful manner to even highlight our darkest demon or issue. And then guiding us gently to face it.
However if we are ready and can take Rinpoche’s guidance directly, then Rinpoche will tell us straight with no fluff, padded cushions and tied with a ribbon so to speak. So, it is really up to us, on whether we are ready to hear the truth and face it.
Ok, now what does all that have to do with Elvira? HAHA – She cracks us up in a good way. May be, if nothing else, but to remind us not to take life too seriously. Everything passes us by so quickly and nothing stays the same. How our world has changed since the days of Elvira!
Terima Kasih Rinpoche!
“And watch those hands, I only look like I’m up for grabs!!!”
Things are never what they seem to be and neither are they not…
First impressions often are the last ones when humans evaluate each other base on faulty thinking and tainted view or with an agenda..
Looks like it’s back to what Rinpoche said on imprints and how often we fail to recognise it but hope is not all lost yet as long as we open ourselves to repentance and reformation.
It’s a long road and it can be dreary too but now that we have met with Rinpoche and Kechara, that long road now is lit up with neon lights and fun is part of the journey too…
Humour is actually an essential element in Rinpoche’s delivery of the Dharma. I think many people would have noticed that Rinpoche’s Dharma talks are littered with a humourous account, laughter and lots of verbal caricature of certain close students. Sometimes the humour reflects the Dharma theme of the talk and sometimes it does not.
RInpoche already said that he would often joke about certain student to highlight a particular quality in them that otherwise would have been difficult to relay to the student. Humour is also used to capture the attention of the audience after a particularly technical discourse. It is through the skillful means of the teacher to use humour as a tool and method to teach the Dharma.
Where does anger stem from? Unhappiness, which precedes anger. The opponent to anger is patience. The source is internal, not external, though external conditions can spark it. So how do we keep from blowing up? Keep a happy mind. It is hard to get angry when your mind is happy all the time. This is what I learnt from our last Shantideva class conducted by Mr. Ngeow, not that I realise this teaching, but I am reminded that being happy or unhappy does not change the situation, so what’s the point of dwelling on unhappy thoughts?
I recall an “Advice from Atisha’s Heart: If the things you desire do not come it is due to karma created long ago, therefore keep a happy and relaxed mind.”
I like that Tsem Rinpoche likes to share lots of humour with students. Elvira & Aunty Virus, Joan Rivers and Lucille Ball. What have all that got to do with dharma you say? What’s a monk doing talking about these worldly things? He’s teaching us to laugh, be happy and relax. Anything that can help deflect our negative action even for a while. You can’t be happy and angry at the same time. Wow, I see the link. To me that’s dharma. That looks like a Mahasiddha action.
Terima Kasih Rinpoche!
Yup Elvira is another funny bone and good humor is indeed essential to life lol. It is rare to find a Rinpoche who can share with us these ‘mundane’ stuff and especially something that can brighten up one’s day. I wish my country had more entertainers and not just a small cluster as compared to the US…gawd I realised we need to get less hung up about ourselves and lighten up…
Part of a Bodhisattva’s work I guess 🙂
Thank you Rinpoche!
Rinpoche, Elvira sure is funny! You sure have a good sense of what is funny and witty. Who would have thought a Rinpoche would watch Elvira? Thank you so much for sharing so much in your blog – the humour, wit and Dharma through your own works and students. It is very inspirational.
