Sakya Lineage and Dorje Shugden (Free Download)
Since Dorje Shugden was introduced into the Sakya tradition, there have been many Sakya throne holders that practiced Dorje Shugden and proliferated the practice throughout the Sakya tradition.
Below is a series of thangkas first printed and sold over 20 years ago. They depict three of the founding fathers of the Sakya tradition: Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, Jetsun Sonam Tsemo and Jetsun Drakpa Gyeltsen. What is interesting to note is the inclusion of Dorje Shugden as a Protector, immediately below the depiction of Sonam Tsemo and taking up a central position in the thangka.
Also below is a thangka of the 32nd Sakya Trizin Wangdu Nyingpo, who is depicted with Dorje Shugden Tanag (Dorje Shugden on a black horse), as per the Sakya tradition. If Dorje Shugden was an unenlightened being, the Sakyas would not have painted him into a thangka of their lineage throneholder. Clearly Dorje Shugden Tanag’s practice bore some significance to the life and practices of the 32nd holder of the Sakya throne.

Dorje Shugden was enthroned first as a Dharma protector in Tibet over 400 years ago. Beautiful and rare thangkas which tells a thousand words depicting the founding fathers of the Sakya tradition which includes Dorje Shugden as a Protector. It has proven that many high lamas has been practicing Dorje Shugen’s practice centuries ago. Since Dorje Shugden practice arose, countless images of Dorje Shugden together with other Buddhas have been produced over the years.
We are fortunate able to see all these rare thangkas and downloading for free.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
This beautiful painting (thangka) is in Sakya Monastery in Tibet’s protector chapel. It is Dorje Shugden Tanag or Dorje Shugden riding on a black horse. This is the Sakya version of Dorje Shugden. Dorje Shugden is originally Sakya and still practiced in Sakya and came to Gelug and Kagyu practitioners later.
8 pictures of the Sakya Monastery to share, where Protector temple Mug Chung is located. This is the monastery where Dorje Shugden was enthroned first as a Dharma protector in Tibet over 400 years ago by the highest Sakya throneholders and masters. Since then when people are doing Dorje Shugden prayers and pujas, they invoke his holy wisdom presence from Mug Chung Protector Chapel in Sakya Monastery in Tibet.

Dear Rinpoche
Thank you for sharing these precious Thangka. From the Thangka, i have learned that Dorje Shugden is also protector for Sakya lineage. This is very important because many people claim that Dorje Shugden is sectarian. Which is wrong. How can that be, one of the previous life on Dorje Shugden or Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen is Sakya Pandita.
One thing is Dorje Shugden is on the horse in Sakya lineage while in Gelugpa i always see in snow lion. I wonder why Dorje Shugden mount is black horse in Sakya.
Once again, thank you Rinpoche for this great Thangka.
With Love
