Deep blue figure within fiery mass of light

Dear friends,

This is a very interesting account from a senior Dharma student. Mr. Keith Milton is a very sincere, serious practitioner of Dharma. He is from what I gather very devoted to his lamas, his practice and his commitments. He stays very low key as it should be for tantra and has been in wonderful contact with Pastor Seng Piow for years. Recently I was shared this story and I thought it was so beautiful. Many miracle or supernatural accounts have been witnessed around His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche as recounted by his numerous students. So I am not surprised but it never ceases to amaze me with this sharing here. Thank you Keith for this sharing.

Please enjoy.

Tsem Rinpoche

Dear Seng Piow,

I hope you are keeping well. I’ve been thinking about the wonderful accounts of Kyabje Zong Rinpoche’s activities and presence that Ven. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche has kindly  provided and I couldn’t recall if I had ever sent you a story I heard in the 1980s. So here it is.

A Dharma friend of mine told me this in the mid-1980s. I believe it refers to a visit to London by Kyabje Zong Rinpoche in the late 70s or early 80s. My friend, Elizabeth, was living in London and attending Dharma teachings. She heard that Rinpoche was giving a  Public Talk and she decided to go. Wanting some company she asked a friend of hers, a Zen Buddhist practitioner, if he would go with her. She knew he was rather closed-minded towards Tibetan Buddhism and hoped that this might change his opinion. Anyway, he agreed to go and so they made their way to the venue. Due to traffic they were a little late and Elizabeth worried about going in to the talk after it had started. So when they opened the doors she immediately slipped off her shoes and began prostrating towards Rinpoche, forgetting about her friend for the moment. She then heard a gasp behind her and the door sharply opening as her friend ran out !

Not sure what to do or if there was some emergency she grabbed her shoes (she was in her 60s then ) and quickly went out through the doors looking for her friend. She saw him walking very quickly away down the street. Running after him she called out to ask what the matter was. He turned and she saw that he was both pale and angry, breathing very hard and clenching his fists. He said that she should have warned him beforehand. Confused, Elizabeth asked him what had happened. He expressed both wonderment and alarm saying “You didn’t see it?”
Elizabeth said that she had seen nothing as she was prostrating. Her friend explained that as he went through the doors and looked towards the teaching platform all he could see was a fiery mass of light with a deep blue figure within it. Such was the power of this presence that he almost fainted and in fear he backed out of the doors and began running away. Elizabeth immediately thought that he might have had a vision of Rinpoche as Shri Heruka but she was at a loss as to how to explain this to a Zen Buddhist practitioner who was very emotional. Before she had the chance to say anything he said that he had to go, he wouldn’t dare go back. So Elizabeth had to return alone and spent ( she told me ) most of the Talk wishing that she could see even a slight distortion of wisdom fire around Rinpoche, and wondering how strange karma was that such a blessing should appear to someone who ( to all appearances ) was not ready for it.

Later we thought that the man would never forget the experience, and had received an amazing blessed imprint on his mindstream. A very profound teaching in a few seconds !

Best wishes,

Keith

Additional information to help you understand this wonderful story better:

Buddha Shakyamuni having reached full enlightenment was not bound by the physical, by time and by conventions. In order to benefit sentient beings of the ten directions, three realms and all mental aptitudes can manifest in myriad ways. Many other universes and existences have the Buddhas manifesting and they may not always manifest in the way we see them or how we think they should appear as that is our personally conventions. The Buddhas are beyond conventions, time and space.

On Mount Kailash, Buddha manifested as Heruka and Vajra Yogini with the 62 deities of their entourage. The purpose of Heruka’s practice is using primarily desire along with attachments and ignorance and transform those into the enlightened state of a Buddha. Instead of ‘shunning’ those qualities in us, we use them to ‘overcome’ themselves. In Heruka’s complex and complete meditations we use our sinews, joints, bones, wind and nerves which are inherently within us as basis for the meditation to gain higher attainments. Through purification, meditation, recitation, visualization and collection of merits we are able to change our projections, ignorance, desire and attachments to serve us and not harm us. This practice is within all four schools of Buddhism but heavily emphasized with Kagyu, Sakya and Gelug schools. Lama Tsongkapa himself highly recommended the practice of Heruka. Hence in Gaden, Drepung and Sera Monasteries as well as the two main tantric colleges of Gyuto and Gyumed, Heruka practice is taught, shared and heavily emphasized.

Heruka’s nature is Buddhahood. All of us have a innate and natural Heruka (Great Bliss) within us. Heruka’s nature is the innate Buddhahood. Although Shakyamuni manifested as Heruka Buddha with 12 arms and 4 faces dancing ecstastically, he is not asking us to look for the outer Heruka but the inner Heruka that is inherent in us. Therefore this path of Heruka if received from a qualified teacher and practiced diligently, can confer high realizations and enlightenment with 14 lifetimes for the ‘worst’s’ practitioner. But full enlightenment for the best practitioner within one lifetime. When someone practices Heruka well, they become ‘one’ with Heruka. That is not a merging of the Buddha Heruka with us and we dissolve into Him, but it is more that we have realized our Buddha nature using Heruka’s tantric meditational path. So when one becomes merged with Heruka, it is meaning one has gained high attainments or full enlightenment using Heruka’s path. Therefore masters like His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche who we say are ‘one with Heruka’ means his mind has realized its true Buddha nature and therefor he is Heruka already or a Buddha.  During the time of the Kaliyuga (now) where the five degenerations are strong due to karma, Heruka’s practice in condensed form which is Vajra Yogini will be extremely effective. Vajra Yogini’s meditation, mantra, path and methods are all derived from the Heruka tantra. Heruka’s tantra is long and extensive and perhaps difficult for many during the Kaliyuga. Therefore Vajra Yogini’s path will include all the main points and blessings of Heruka’s path but much shorter, easier and less time required.

The Five degenerations (nyig ma nga) increasing in the degenerate time (kaliyuga) are:
1. degeneration of time (tib.: du kyi nyig) – time of wars, peace does not last long; time of sicknesses with new diseases coming; the decline of quality of things, less nutritious food, famine; people are overwhelmed by spirit harms.
2. degeneration of sentient beings (tib.: sem cen gyi nyig ma) – refers to the decline in physical form, intellect, good health; beings are thick-skulled and difficult to subdue; the majority hold ideas that are morally wrong, many are intolerant to the point of hatred.
3. degeneration of lifespan (tib.: tshei nyig ma) – refers to the fact that the lifespan of beings declines from one hundred years all the way down to ten years.
4. degeneration of actions/views (tib.: le kyi nyig ma) – means that all sentient beings engage in the ten non-virtuous actions, people very easily believe in wrong philosophies and find it difficult to believe the right view.
5. degeneration of afflictions (tib.: nyon mong pe nyig ma) – indicates that the afflictions of ignorance, desire, anger, jealousy, pride and other delusions are becoming so strong that it is very difficult to abandon them.

Buddha Heruka or Chakrasamvara

According to His Eminence Kensur Jampa Yeshe Rinpoche, the three main types of Heruka lineages that are known to be very beneficial for people of the Kaliyuga age are:

  • Heruka Luipa’s 62-Deity tradition
  • Heruka Drilbupa 5 Deity tradition
  • Heruka Nakpopa 62 Deity Tradition

These three are very prevalent within our Gelug school of Buddhism.

Heruka Luipa 62 Deity tradition is practiced by Namygal Monastery of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Gyuto Tantric College, Gyume Tantric College and Gaden Shartse Monastery. Heruka and Vajra Yogini were the main practices of many great Mahasiddhas of India, Nepal and Tibet and of His Holiness Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche, His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche.

As I mentioned earlier, the condensed practice of Heruka is Vajra Yogini or her other name is Vajravarahi. Vajra Yogini means literally the ‘Diamond Female Meditator’. Diamond is indestructible likened to the state of full enlightenment. Vajra Yogini is the chief consort of Heruka and you can also say Heruka is the chief consort of Vajra Yogini.  She is the Female Buddha who is insight incarnate and she functions to destroy ignorance, which is our principal enemy. Ignorance is holding the view of an inherently existing or existent “I”. Her name is used to indicate her essence, which is insight that cognizes the inseparability of bliss and voidness. As Vajravarahi, she has a sow’s head jutting off the right side of her head. The sow is representative of ignorance and Vajravarahi means ‘Diamond Sow’ or the Lady who had overcome all ignorance and therefore not clinging to a non-existent “I”. Vajra Yogini or Vajravarahi are fully enlightened Buddhas. Meditation and practice of Vajra Yogini’s path can confer enlightenment within 14 lifetimes. On the zealous student you can ascend to Vajra Yogini’s Kechara paradise in this life during the bardo immediately after death. Devotion to Vajra Yogini is highly recommended for many beneficial reasons.

I was 18 years old when this was taken back in 1983 in Los Angeles, California. Here I am in this photo with my most precious root guru, His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. He has profoundly changed my life for the better forever. Not a day goes by I don’t think about him, love him, miss him and yearn for his presence and teachings.

I meditate on him in my heart every single day. He was everything that a high Tibetan lama is said to be and more. From the moment I heard his name before meeting him from a friend who had met him already, faith instantly arose in me. Instantly faith arose in me. I did 100 prostrations to his picture everyday until I met him. I wanted to make a spiritual karmic connection with him so that when I met him, I can receive many teachings and that is why I made the prostrations.

No other spiritual teacher although all of them were great has this sort of meteoric impact on me. It’s unexplainable. 30 plus years down the line, my faith, respect and trust in Kyabje Zong Rinpoche is unshakable. I will always follow and practice what he has taught me and given me. I will never abandon my teacher or any practice he has given me no matter what obstacles come my way.

No matter if my life is threatened, or I am disliked or segregated for following his instructions, I will never abandon any of his teachings. No other teacher will ever have me change my practice I have received from Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. May I meet Kyabje Zong Rinpoche in all my future lives too and come under his care. I forever bow to him and place the crown of my unworthy head to his feet. I will follow, meditate, trust and believe in my guru always.

Humbly,
Tsem Rinpoche

Melodies of the Ensa Ear-Whispered Chod Lineage

At the request of Venerable Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen in 1983 at Thubten Dhargye Ling in Los Angeles, USA, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche recited and taught the Ensa Ear-Whispered Chod practice from memory. These melodies are chanted according to prayers known as: Cutting through Self-grasping; Dedicating the Illusory Body as Ganachakra; and the Ganachakra Offering according to Chod practice. Zong Rinpoche chose to present the melodies of certain verses of these prayers and remarked that there may come a time when Chod melodies are taught according to this recording.

Please ‘enjoy’ these beautiful images of His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche and His Holiness Ling Rinpoche, the precious tutors of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. These masters shared a very special, close relationship; it was well-known that when in Trijang Rinpoche’s company, Ling Rinpoche was often seen to be laughing. After Trijang Rinpoche’s passing, Ling Rinpoche remarked many times how much he missed Trijang Rinpoche due to the unique and close relationship that they shared.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is in Dharamsala, which is broken into two parts. Upper Dharamsala is where the Dalai Lama’s palace is located with his audience room and main prayer hall. It is also the location of the Dialectics School, Gaden Shartse’s guesthouse, restaurants, tourist hotels and main tourist areas.

A short ride down takes you to the lower part of Dharamsala where the Tibetan government is located. It is the location of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Nechung monastery, the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, the Tibetan arts centre…it’s all in one area. And the reason why it’s split into upper and lower Dharamsala is because the area is mountainous.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives was established by the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government to preserve all the ancient texts – both secular and spiritual – of Tibet and in the process, translate them into various languages like English. This book, Overview of Buddhist Tantra, by Panchen Sonam Drakpa was one of the books translated into English. What’s very interesting is that the book very clearly says that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, one of the five main disciples of Lama Tsongkhapa. It also says that after that, he was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen.

So the book is basically saying that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, Panchen Sonam Drakpa and Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen – the three Drakpas – are of the same mindstream.

Now that’s very peculiar because if Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen’s previous life is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, the renowned composer of 45 volumes of Dharma texts, the abbot of three monasteries AND the 15th Gaden Tripa, the holder of Lama Tsongkhapa’s throne…if that’s the case, how can Panchen Sonam Drakpa take rebirth as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen and become an evil spirit and have a negative mind?

Prior to Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, he was Panchen Sonam Drakpa and before that, he was Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa. How can a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa reincarnate as the erudite master Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and then die and reincarnate as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen…& then Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, due to a bad and negative prayer, become the evil spirit Dorje Shugden? How is that possible? Logically, it’s not.

What’s incredible is that all of this was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives under the Dalai Lama’s guidance. They contradict themselves because on one hand, the Tibetan leaders say Dorje Shugden is an evil spirit. On the other hand they’re printing a book saying that Panchen Sonam Drakpa, whose later incarnation became Dorje Shugden, is of this illustrious mindstream.

So how can the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, which is under the auspices of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government, print the translation of a book composed by the previous incarnation of a so-called evil spirit? How can they then say in the book that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, and his next life was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen?

Prior to the Dorje Shugden ban and controversy, everyone in Tibet knew that Dorje Shugden is Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and that Panchen Sonam Drakpa is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen. The three Drakpas, they are one mindstream emanating again and again to benefit other beings.

And as we all know, Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen became Dorje Shugden so it totally doesn’t make sense to call him an evil spirit, then highlight all of his previous lives as erudite masters, and publish all of this information under their own library. So you can see the contradictions. You can read all of this for yourself in Overview of Buddhist Tantra, which was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives.

    OVERVIEW OF BUDDHIST TANTRA

GENERAL PRESENTATION OF THE CLASSES OF TANTRA,
CAPTIVATING THE MINDS OF THE FORTUNATE ONES

rgyud sde spyi’i rnam par bzhag pa
skal bzang gi yid ‘phrog ces bya ba bzhugs so

    BY
    PANCHEN SONAM DRAGPA
    (Pan-chen bSod-nams grags-pa, 1478-1554)

    O Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel! (Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal!)
In the vast expanse of Your bodhi-mind,
The mind that the Buddhas have lauded for as many as
    one hundred times,
You have developed “merit” shining like the sun.
Through Your skill in learning, debate and writing,
As illuminating as one hundred thousand sun rays,
You have developed in You a complete knowledge of
    the entire sutras and tantras,
Resembling a garden of flowers in full bloom.
    The power of Your speech is like the sun;
The fame of your name has reached the three realms of
    this world.
O Sonam Dragpa, the teacher of teachers!
I bow down at your feet.

In the vast garden of Your great teachings,
The intelligent young people gather for
The ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission,’
Just as they are attracted to
The one hundred thousand types of nectar
Dripping from a flower of one hundred petals.
May I be able to experience
The taste of the secret tantra!

Panchen Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the holder of sutra and Vajrayana teachings, was a master whose outstanding learning and spiritual accomplishments are well known by all the learned ones in Tibet. His first incarnation came in the form of one of the five prestigious disciples of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) and became known as Vinaya Holder (Dulzin) Dragpa Gyaltsen (Gragspa rgyal-mtshan). Then came Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the author of the present text. The next was Nagri Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsen (mNga’-ris sPrul-sku Grags-pa rgyal-mtshan). In this way, a line of his incarnations, each with the Dragpa (gragspa) surname, followed successively.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was born in the 14th century in Tsetang (rTsed-thang) in the Lhoka (Lho-kha) region of Central Tibet. He entered the great seat of learning, Sera Thekchenling (Se-ra theg-chen-gling) monastic university, where he became the personal disciple of spiritual master Donyo Dangden (Dhon-yod dang-ldan) and His Holiness the Second Dalai Lama Gedun Gyatso (dGe-‘dun rgya-mtsho). Under them, he studied the entire teachings of sutra, tantra and their commentaries, and became known for his outstanding learning. He also received from them the empowerments, reading transmissions, guides and instructions of the entire body of spiritual training. On becoming the fully blessed one, the Dalai Lama appointed him the abbot of the Loseling (Blo-gsalgling) college, one of the four colleges of Drepung (‘Bras-dpung)- the most prestigious monastic university in Tibet before 1959, with over 10,000 monks on its register. He continued to be the abbot of this college for the next six years; and after him the tenure for each of his successors in this position was fixed for a period of six years, a rule that is followed even today.

He was then appointed the head of the Gelugpa (dGe-lugs-pa) order, the throne holder of Gaden (dGa’-ldan), thus becoming the 15th regent of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-khapa), the second Buddha. In his eulogy to him, Khedrub Gelek Pelsang (mKhas-grub dGe-legs dpal- bzang) says:

O Lama, the second successor of the Unsubduable One,
The regent of the Lord of Dharma,
    You are the one who made the virtuous qualities thrive;
You are the one who ascended to the golden throne uplifted
    by the fearless lions.
    May Your success thrive forever!

He continued to be the throne holder for the next seven years, during which time he promoted the spread of Lord Tsongkhapa’s (Tsong-kha-pa) precious teachings, the Gelug (dGe-lugs) tradition, across the land in all directions. He also paid special attention to the practice of monastic rules and the learning and meditation of Buddhism in the monasteries such as Sera (Se-ra), Drepung (‘Bras-spungs), Kyomolung (sKyo-mo-lung), Phagmo Chode (Phag-mo chos-sde), Nyeding (Nye-sdings), Ödna (’Od-sna) and Chöde Rinchen (Chos-sde rin-chen) etc. and improved them to a great extent. He taught the Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso (bSod-nams rGya-mtsho) as the latter’s spiritual master. It was from him that the Dalai Lama received the name Sonam (bSod-nams).

His contributions in the literary field are enormous; and, indeed, they are the most valuable of all his contributions. Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) has rightly said:

    Of all one’s deeds,
The ‘deeds of speech’ are the most valuable.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was a person with an extraordinary talent for teaching, debate and writing. In his colophon to Bu mey chi don zab don sel wey dron mey (dBu ma’i spyi don zab don gsal ba’i sgron me), he wrote:

In the field of teaching, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would outdo them in this field, Arya Asanga and his
    brother transmigrated into another realm.

In the field of debate, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would find out the areas they had contradicted and
that I would examine them and put forth my arguments,
the logician Dignaga (Digh-naga) and Dharmakirti tactfully
    bypassed me.

In the field of writing, I am [next to none!] [In my eyes,]
Arya-sura was just good at spreading the works, which
are like ‘disputes~ between an insect and a field.’

I am the learned man. Peerless in the field of teaching,
    debate and writing!

For some this passage might sound utterly nonsensical, but the most learned master of our age, the talented teacher, logician and writer, the late tutor to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Yongdzin Trijang Dorjechang (Yongs-‘dzin Khri-byang rDorje-‘Chang), said: “Now, some people of our time, who consider themselves learned scholars, think that this is utter nonsense; but they are wrong.”

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) wrote over 45 volumes of books dealing with many different subjects, such as the commentaries on the sutras and tantras, the saddhana manuals of the tutelary deities, history, religious history and so forth. Among these, one that is very important for all who wish to learn and meditate on the path-of the practical aspect of Buddhism in general and that of Vajrayana in particular is the Leg shey gyu de chi nam par shagpa kelsang gi yi trod (Legs bshad rgyud sde spyi’i rnam par bzhag pa skal bzang gi yid ‘phrod). In this book, he has explained precisely how the four tantras differ from one another. He has also fully described the stages of the two spontaneous path practices of the Vajrayana tradition, dealing with the ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission’, thus interpreting without mistake the intention of Adhi-Buddha Vajradhara.

May the reprint of this text, which the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is publishing herewith, bring peace and happiness in this world!

Lama Yeshe was a very devoted student of His Holiness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. Lama Yeshe very much loved and respected Kyabje Zong Rinpoche and was the first lama to invite Kyabje Zong Rinpoche to the west. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche gave vast amount of empowerments, oral transmissions, teachings and sogtae of Dorje Shugden to many of Lama Yeshe’s senior students. Towards the end of Lama Yeshe’s fruitful life, he was in the hospital and physically shutting down. Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was giving teachings in Switzerland and was requested to fly in which Kyabje Zong Rinpoche most graciously did. Here in this picture is Kyabje Zong Rinpoche doing special prayers for his student Lama Yeshe. Lama Yeshe was already partially paralyzed, but true to a meditation master, his mind was extremely clear and bright. You can see Lama Yeshe leaning towards Kyabje Zong Rinpoche in deep respect and devotion. Lama Yeshe practiced all the lineages, yidams, protectors such as Dorje Shugden given to him till the end of his life. He never gave up on any of his practices as he has great devotion to Kyabje Zong Rinpoche and his other lamas. Lama Yeshe’s samaya with Kyabje Zong Rinpoche was so pure, intact and perfect till the end. A great inspiration.~Tsem Rinpoche

Wonderful story of Deep blue figure of Kyabje Zong Rinpoche. Rejoice to Elizabeth ‘s friend a Zen Buddhist practitioner, who saw a fiery mass of light with a deep blue figure within it.That is Kyabje Zong Rinpoche in his manifestation of Heruka. He was not ready for these but what he saw will definitelly had a blessed imprint on his mindstream.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the teachings of Heruka for us to understand much better of this wonderful story.

  12. Joy Kam on Oct 14, 2016 at 2:04 pm

Thank you for such a beautiful short yet profound write up on the Guru’s skillful means to bless someone even though they may not be ready. The profoundness of the Tantras specifically Heruka and Vajrayogini’s, which “prefect” for this era of desire and perverted views and it will only get worst. It is amazing how the Buddhas appear to different people for different reasons, and something we have yet to comprehend properly.

Someone who is not ready sees the blue light but runs away in fear… reminds me of some who received the Tantras but do not practice it or have ran away also. For them I do hope it is a blessing. It must be, otherwise doesn’t that cost the teacher’s life to be shorter? So many have taken tantric initiations with Kensure Rinpoche and even Geshe Kelsang of NKT whose sangha students gives initiation so frequently, they can’t all be ready as I have spoken to some and they do not even know they need to do tsog or have a minimum mantra to do daily. So definitely must be a blessing, otherwise all these teachers would have had a very short life. This just goes to show that enlightened beings do not necessary operate or deals with a problem that affects only this life, but their vision is way beyond. And the Guru(s) will always find a way to help the person again no matter what. Hence, up till this day, where there are some who has gone astray with hate in their hearts, will still be prayed for by Rinpoche, that in future, hopefully their karma will ripen again for them to practice.

  13. Pastor KH Ng on Aug 4, 2016 at 3:04 pm

    Amazing!

This Zen practitioner had the merit to see the the attained body of Zong Rinpoche, deep blue figure within fiery mass of light; exactly like what we see in a Heruka Chakrasamvara thangka.
Perhaps it is the training of the Zen Buddhism which emphasise the practice of meditation and intuition that gave him the view of a Buddha. Strange karma that he was very scared by that view; perhaps because of his fixed perception of things, especially his aversion to Tibetan Buddhism.
Anyhow, this is an amazing story that the ultimate truth is beyond our normal perceptions.

  14. Sofi on Aug 3, 2016 at 2:25 am

I truly rejoice for the man who saw Kyabje Zong Rinpoche in his manifestation of Heruka as “a fiery mass of light with a deep blue figure within it”. Although he does not understand or realise but he had such a powerful blessing that the imprint burnt into his mind will follow him until it ripens.
Oh dear, the list of Five Degeneration is very much present in today’s world and the deterioration continues strongly as we read more of how debased humans are becoming. It is scary to think of our people living in these conditions, always in fear and on guard against cruelty of others. May we all be blessed with the practises of powerful Heruka and beautiful Vajrayogini as their practises involve using our pre-existing desire along with attachments and ignorance and transform those into the enlightened state of a Buddha. Its exactly “Nothing changes but everything changes”.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing Mr. Keith Milton’s story and your teaching on Buddha Heruka and Vajrayogini. May we all gain the merits to one day receive these precious practise from our Guru one day.

Thanks Pastor Shin Tan for sending me this incredible story of Zong Rinpoche! I fold my hands every time I think of or hear about this illustrious master of Dharma. I do. Every time. Just like Tsem Rinpoche, I learned from him about Guru Devotion. That is my secret to why I have so many problems and downfalls but yet Tsem Rinpoche is always close by in my mind. He has taught me that Guru Devotion is the KEY to NEVER LOSING DHARMA. Even though I am very worldly in many ways, my devotion keeps me safe until I am more disciplined on my own.
Thanks again! I can’t wait to contribute to this blog or do some volunteer work for E-Div!
I believe that the man in this story was unshakeable in his Buddhist faith, which allowed Zong Rinpoche to be able to show the man his true, POWERFUL nature. The man had some ignorance regarding the Tibetan tradition, and he had the MERIT to be able to have that delusion removed by Zong Rinpoche. So even though he DID NOT APPRECIATE Tibetan Buddhism, he HAD MERIT from his Zen Buddhist practice which ALLOWED him to see Zong Rinpoche’s ‘True Nature’
That is my belief/analysis of the situation, and it IS open for debate please!

Visions of great master as other than human, have popped up all over all across Buddhist history. It should not have been a surprise with regards to Zong Rinpoche, as Zong Rinpoche was a superb debater, Geshe Lharampa and a master of Sutra and Tantra.

I do believe that some people can see energies very clearly. For this person to witness HH Zong Rinpoche’s energy form, HH must have allowed him to see it for very good reasons. A few reasons I can think of are:

    1) leave a karmic imprint of Enlightenment in his mind stream.
    2) make him realize his strong attachment to his self-cherishing mind. For him to have such a strong reaction to seeing something “strange”, it shows how big his self-cherishing mind is.
    3) to purify his negative karma.

Highly attained lamas are very humble and would not simply show their “energies” or “aura” arbitrarily. Regardless, this person was very lucky to have met Heruka in person.

  19. Stella Cheang on Feb 14, 2016 at 7:19 pm

This is an eye-opening blog post. I never thought that a normal being like us could see the Nirmanakaya form or Dharmakaya form of a Buddha. I rejoice for Mr Keith Milton’s friend, Elizabeth, who had the great fortune to witness Kyabje Zong Rinpoche in the form of Lord Heruka, which certainly had left an imprint in her mind for a very long time.

Heruka and Vajra Yogini with the 62 deities of their entourage was the manifestation of Buddha Shakyamuni, when He was on Mount Kailash. Through the complex practice of Heruka, Buddha uses desire along with attachments and ignorance and transform those into the enlightened state of a buddha to serve us and not harm us. This practice is widely practiced in all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism and recommended by Lama Tsongkapa himself.

Heruka’s practice and the condensed form of heruka’s practice, which is Vajra Yogini will be extremely effective in Kaliyuga time where the 5 degenerations are prevalent. The Five degenerations (nyig ma nga) during kaliyuga time are:
    1. Degeneration of time – time of wars, time of sicknesses with new diseases coming, the decline of quality of things and people are overwhelmed by spirit harms.
    2. Degeneration of sentient beings– refers to the decline in physical form / intellect / health, beings are stubborn, majority hold morally wrong ideas and many are intolerant to the point of hatred.
    3. Degeneration of lifespan – refers to the fact that the lifespan of beings declines from one hundred years all the way down to ten years.
    4. Degeneration of actions/views – means that all sentient beings engage in the ten non-virtuous actions, people very easily believe in wrong philosophies and find it difficult to believe the right view.
    5. Degeneration of afflictions – indicates that the afflictions of ignorance, desire, anger, jealousy, pride and other delusions are becoming so strong that it is very difficult to abandon them.

Since Heruka’s practice is so powerful and when practiced according to pure lingeage teaching, one can achieve full enlightenment in one lifetime; hence, the say “one becomes merged with Heruka”, it literally means one has gained attainments or full enlightenment using Heruka’s path. One example of someone being one with Keruka is none other than the Great Kyabje Zong Rinpoche.

Thank You very much, Rinpoche, for sharing with us the very scarce teaching on Heruka and Vojrayogini.

    Humbly, bowing down,
    Stella Cheang

n Tibetan culture, it is a popular and customary practice for families to invite monks to perform spiritual ceremonies such as Trusol rituals. The monks have had the opportunity to offer such ceremonies for individuals or their families. Such ceremonies purify the elements of the environment which helps those living or visiting there to experience good health, success and well-being. The sacred ritual of ‘bathing’ the Buddhas and consecration through which negativities, sicknesses and obstacles will be cleared. Where by filling those areas with positive energies and good vibes through this Trusol consecration puja. Water is an essential part of this puja and symbolises the cleansing of all negativities and impurities. Through this puja it also pacifies local deities and other unseen beings in the surrounding areas. We are indeed fortunate that Tsem Rinpoche has taught Kecharians this practice and it has benefited many.
Thank you Rinpoche with folded hands

Reading this post had me gain some knowledge of Shifter Werewolves. Any article regarding rare creatures or paranormal articles are of my interest since young. In European folklore, a werewolf is a man who turns into a wolf at night and devours animals, people, or corpses but returns to human form by day. They have the ability to transform from an ordinary human appearance to a partially-lupine form with pointed ears, mutton chops, claws and fangs, and a ridged brow . Wow… werewolf tends to be vicious and unable to control his blood thirst. Their underlying common origin can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European mythology. In many depictions, these bloodthirsty beasts are evil where they kill animals and innocent people. They are humans who transition into wolf-like creatures, after being placed under a curse. In folklore, most werewolves originate from being cursed or bitten by another werewolf. That’s what they do believe. According many enthusiasts, there’s many different type of werewolves such as Alpha wolves, Beta wolves , Deltas, Elders, some survive as loners while others move in packs. How true it is no one knows. I do believe their existing . Many interesting stories related to these wolves in the past history.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Beautiful Dorje Shugden at Malacca. One should pay a visit there, located at a busy tourist place. It was such an auspicious occasion that a grand Puja was held there. Dedicated students and volunteers were there getting the place ready for the grand puja. Well the Grand Dorje Shugden puja was conducted by very own Kechara puja team to commemorate the chapel’s 3rd anniversary. Many people attended the Puja that’s wonderful to receive the powerful Protector Dorje Shugden blessings. More people will make a connection and get to know Manjushri, the Buddha of Wisdom, in the form of a Dharma Protector. May Dorje Shugden’s practice flourish to benefit those tourists and locals.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Venerable Geshe Rabten Rinpoche is a highly realised meditation master known as a debater, scholar, and meditation master, was the first Tibetan Buddhist master to introduce the complete Vinaya-tradition. He had also introduce the study of the five major topics of Buddhism to the West. He became the ‘path breaker’ of the complete and complex teachings of Buddhism in the West. Many masters, who are famous in the West today, were Geshe’s students. enerable Geshe Rabten. Geshe Rabten wrote the beautiful and Manjushri’s prayer called Gangloma and gave a profound explanation. We are so fortunate to learn about this Manjushri’s sacred prayer. May all be blessed by the practice of Lord Manjushri and Geshe Rabten’s explanation.

The begging bowl or alms bowl is one of the simplest but most important objects in the daily lives of Theravada Buddhist monks. The alms bowl still stands as an emblem of how all Buddhas, as numerous as grains of sand in the Ganges, practiced to end their desire. All those who receive the alms bowl should focus their mind to act with self-control and self-respect. Almsgiving is a tradition of Theravada Buddhists, majority in Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Laos. In those early days of Buddhism, monks would take their bowls and go out begging for food. As today in Thailand one could see monks woke up before dawn every morning and carried his bowl through the roads or paths wherever he was staying. Local people would place food in the bowl as a donation, through the generosity of lay people. They accept whatever food is offered for them and eat whatever been given, serve as a blessing for the giver.
One bowl has held the food of a thousand families. A solitary monastic travels on his journey of a hundred thousand miles seeking liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Thank you H.E. Tsem Rinpoche for explaining the meaning of begging and gave us more reasons to be vegetarian . Create a awareness among us not killing animals to be one.

Ajahn Siripanyo, the son of billionaire Ananda Krishnan, chose to abandon his inheritance and become a Buddhist monk in pursuit of spirituality. A Thai-Malaysian monk born in London and educated in UK. He was ordained in Thailand and lived there, leaving behind a life of immense wealth and privilege. He did surprised many and his choice was unexpected. Initially as a temporary measure, but somehow later evolved into a permanent way of life. Ven. Ajahn Siripanyo is now the Abbot of hermitage Dtao Dam on the Thai-Burmese border in Saiyok National Park, Thailand.
He was in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia years back giving an enthralling Dhamma talk on the timeless teachings of Ajahn Chah.

The Tibetan diaspora began in 1959 after the People’s Liberation Army entered the country. Thousands of Tibetan and the Dalai Lama fled into exile to India. The Indian government led by Jawaharlal Nehru kind enough to offer land which was scattered throughout the country. The Tibetans as refugees on which the Tibetans would be able to reestablish themselves. After 60 years of protests, campaigns and fundraising, the Tibetan movement has not been fruitful, increase the living welfare condition and Tibetans continue to depend on the kindness of their host countries. Due to these many Tibetan in exile left India to elsewhere and other countries seeking a better future. In the last 60 years, the Tibetan leadership have not been successful in making progress with their political goals. Surprisingly the Tibetan Spiritual leader Dalai Lama said in an interview published letter that Europe has accepted “too many” refugees . While there is many protests and attempts to pressure Europe to accept more refugees.
Further more the unethical ban against Shugden making life more difficult for many Dorje Shugden practitioners . Because of the ban against Dorje Shugden the whole Tibetan Buddhist world is divided until now. May all be harmonious soon even recently .Dalai Lama had said we could practice Interesting read. Interesting read.

The Kalmyks are the only traditionally Buddhist people living within Europe. As Tibetan Buddhists, the Kalmyks regard the Dalai Lama as their spiritual leader. Kalmykia is a historical crossroads on the Silk Road. The Western Mongol Kalmyk tribes. The Kalmyks live primarily in the Republic of Kalmykia, a federal subject of Russia located in the southeast European part of Russia. The Kalmyks are the only inhabitants of Europe whose national religion is Buddhism. They embraced Buddhism in the early part of the 17th century and belong to the Tibetan Buddhist. Like other Mongols, the Kalmyk are very spiritual Tibetan Buddhists, but their Buddhism has a strong admixture of indigenous beliefs and shamanistic practices. Buddhism spread among Mongols during the time of the Mongol Empire. They have come a long way till now, with rich traditions in song, dance, music, arts and a powerful heritage ,strong convictions.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting information of the hidden Kalmykia society.

Thaipusam is a Tamil Hindu festival celebrated on the first full moon day of the Tamil month. The festival is celebrated to commemorate the victory of Hindu God Murugan over the demon Surapadman. The festival commemorates the triumph of good over evil by many devotees throughout Malaysia. For Hindus, Thaipusam is a day to cleanse oneself of sins and to repent for any transgressions in the past year.Devotees place a great deal of emphasis on the Vel. Silver, gold, lead, copper, and iron which is the five metals. It is said to be able to absorb all negative energy, spread positivity, and destroy all dangerous energies. Wearing yellow during Thaipusam as Lord Murugan’s favourite colour. Well Yellow is also associated with new beginnings, peace and happiness. On that day many devotees will be wearing yellow in color. Devotees will carry heavy ornate structures called kavadis while others have their tongues, cheeks and backs pierced with hooks and skewers. They then walk barefoot up 272 steps to the Batu Caves temple. Women devotees will carry the milk pots on that day. Thousands of locals and tourist from around the world of different faith will be there to witness this auspicious festival.

Dorje Shugden controversy began when the Dalai Lama made successive attempts to wrongly assert the nature of the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden to be a harmful spirit. The great lineage masters such as Kyabje Pabongka Rinpoche and Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche’s teachings are amongst the greatest dharma that forms the foundation of Gelugpa education. As confirmed that Dorje Shugden is an emanation of Manjushri. Dorje Shugden is an enlightened Dharma Protector who manifested about 400 years ago from a lineage of erudite masters. They cant be wrong . Dorje Shugden via the Panglung oracle had helped the Dalai Lama in his great escape out of Tibet. There are so many highly attained lamas who practices Dorje Shugden and their reincarnations have been coming back again and again. Even 5th Dalai Lama composed a prayer to Dorje Shugden and built a Protector chapel dedicated to Dorje Shugden as well. That’s Trode Khangsar in Central Lhasa which is still there. The ban of Dorje Shugden is unnecessary and illogical as the bigger purpose of Dorje Shugden,is the preservation of the Dharma. The Tibetan Leadership (CTA) has instituted this ban against Dorje Shugden for many years and its time to lift the ban. May more people read and understand the ban and the real reason behind this controversy.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David for sharing this post.

Troll is a being in Nordic folklore, described as trolls dwell in isolated areas of rocks, mountains, or caves, live together in small family units, and are rarely helpful to human beings. Trolling behaviors involve tactical aggression to incite emotional responses, which can adversely affect the target’s well-being. Troll represented aspects of life and nature that were beyond human control or understanding. They can be found all over Norway with mysterious rock formations and mountains with troll-like-shapes , sometimes possessing magic powers too. Reading this post had me get to know there’s other forest creatures that existed long ago. An eye opener reading it .

Dice divination, a fascinating and ancient method of fortune-telling, has been used by various cultures throughout history. Dice hold different meanings and symbolism in various religious traditions, representing chance, fate, and the connection between humans and the divine. Dice are commonly used as divination tools in modern witchcraft and are interpreted to seek insight and guidance from higher powers. Despite all the different rules and approaches, all forms of dice divination are basically the more same.
In Tibetan Buddhism there are a number of divination methods. Even within dice divination there are many forms, and these are associated with many different deities such as Manjushri, Palden Lhamo and Dorje Shugden. Dorje Shugden divination method is well known to be extremely accurate , very beneficial and effective.
Our Guru H E Tsem Rinpoche had received the entire transmission and commentary of the Dorje Shugden divination lineage from Dorje Shugden himself. One should maintain very good guru devotion and have clean samaya with our guru with ,have respect for the Dharma and have the deepest faith in the great and powerful enlightened protector Dorje Shugden to do the divination.Tsem Rinpoche has helped thousands of people through his divination methods in Malaysia. Interesting read , more to understand about it.

Visualizing deities while meditating or when we are performing a puja is one of the principal methods used in the Tibetan tradition. Deities are highly symbolic representations of awakened minds that have appeared to past masters in visions. Deities are represented in thangkas and paintings. As more and more people embrace the Tibetan Buddhist path with sincerity and dedication, they understand better and could visualize through the practice. It is not about appeasing a deity, but engaging in formal meditational practices to transform ourselves. The actual practice in Buddhism is to purify karma, accumulate merits by way of Buddha-deity practice, and to create the causes and conditions for spiritual realisations.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David for these great teachings.

Lama Thubten Phurbu a prominent Gelug lama born in a village in Shanglaxiuxiang, Qinghai. As a young child, he showed extraordinary intelligence. Lama Thubten Phurbu is at the forefront of spreading Je Tsongkhapa’s tradition and Dorje Shugden inside Tibet. Lama Thubten Phurbu is responsible for propagating this Dharma Protector’s practice to many. Well respected by many in Kham, Tibet and is a deeply respected local figure known for his work in the community and have done much more for the Tibetan people than the CTA have. Lama Thubten Phurbu’s great works have benefited many sentient beings in Tibet and China. He travels occasionally to the West, India and Nepal to give teachings on Lama Tsongkhapa’s precious lineage as well as Dorje Shugden’s practice. Visited many places spreading Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings, teaching the Lam Rim as well as the Mind Transformation teachings, and promoting the lineage of Dorje Shugden with the support from the Chinese government . The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
