Lama Thubten Phurbu is also associated with the North America Gelug Buddhist Association (NAGBA) and has worked with them to preserve and disseminate the Gelug tradition in America and around the world.

Venerable Lama Thubten Phurbu
Lama Thubten Phurbu, also known as Tsangyang Leshe Gyatso (仓央莱喜加措), was born in 1973 in the village of Geju (格俱村) which lies in Shanglaxiuxiang (上拉秀乡) in Yushu (玉树), Qinghai Province (青海) of the People’s Republic of China. In Tibetan, Qinghai is also known as Amdo.
Born into a nomadic family, the young child showed extraordinary intelligence. He studied various subjects at school including Chinese and Tibetan, and the elders in his community noticed that he was different from the other children.
From a young age, Tsangyang Leshe Gyatso had a marked lack of interest in mundane activities, and viewed them as a waste of time. His siblings left home one after another to pursue their respective careers, leaving him to care for the rest of the family and his ageing parents. However, the young Tsangyang Leshe Gyatso showed no fear and was able to focus on his studies by leading a very simple life.
He received his novice ordination vows from His Eminence Nianzhi Rinpoche and was given the ordination name Thubten Phurbu. He went on to become a member of Pancavidya Lianxi College at Longxi Monastery, where he studied the Five Buddhist Sciences (language, logic, medicine, arts and crafts, and the mind). He became adept in the Tibetan language, mastered the script, and acquired the skill of composition in both verse and prose. It was not only the Tibetan language that he mastered; he excelled in all subjects that he put his mind to.
Lama Thubten Phurbu then advanced to the monastery’s Tantric College and continued his studies in Tantra and Tantric practices, rituals and ritual instruments, vajra dances, the making of tormas, the drawing of sand mandalas and so forth. He also received various Tantric empowerments from Nianzhi Rinpoche such as those of Yamantaka, Guhyasamaja and Heruka Chakrasamvara, as well as various oral transmissions of the Gaden tradition.
Through his hard work and consistency, Lama Thubten Phurbu was later appointed to be the chant master (umze) of the Tantric College and the monastery’s caretaker (kunyer). He was also one of the Vajra Masters who could grant empowerments. Both Lama Thubten Phurbu and Nianzhi Rinpoche transmitted various empowerments to the public during the four years he spent there.
Lama Thubten Phurbu then embarked on a pilgrimage to U-Tsang for the first time with the help of his friends and relatives. He visited the three great Gelug monasteries — Gaden, Sera and Drepung — and also made offerings and prayers at the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa.
Later, Lama Thubten Phurbu received his full ordination or bhikshu vows from Lirang Ren Rinpoche Ngawang Phuntsok (礼郎仁仁波切·昂旺鹏措) and was given the name Ngawang Wangso (昂旺嗡叟). He entered the Lamrim College where he studied texts such as the Lamrim Chenmo, the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, Yamantaka Nispannakrama (Completion Stage), and the long Dorje Shugden kangsol (fulfilment ritual). As before, he also received oral transmissions for many other teachings.
In 1995, Lama Thubten Phurbu enrolled in the Debate College and continued his study of the Great Treaties with various masters including Lobsang Sidrub (罗松喜珠), Sonam Bajo (索囊巴骄) and Ngawang Dondrub (昂旺准殊). During this period, he made a trip to Kirti Monastery in Sichuan, Aba Province, also known as the Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. It was here that he studied Pramana (Valid Cognition) and other subjects under Lobsang Dondrub (罗松准珠) and Ngagek Lungrik (阿克龙热).
The study schedule at Kirti Monastery was punishing. Early each morning, as soon as he had freshened up and completed his prostrations, he would read and memorise the texts. On a daily basis, he would also recite out loud the texts which he had committed to memory to his teacher at dawn. He would then proceed to the main prayer hall for morning service without having breakfast.
Thereafter, Lama Thubten Phurbu would continue his day by debating with his classmates on the pavement or by the road just outside the monastery. As he lacked sponsorship and resources, he used a study table made from carton boxes and slept on a bed of stuffed old gunnysacks.
For four years, he studied intensely with very little sleep and would often skip meals and rest periods, prioritising his studies over his comfort. By the time he returned to Longxi Monastery, Lama Thubten Phurbu had become one of the best debaters among his peers, especially on the topic of Abhisamayalamkara (Ornament of Clear Realisation).
Since his ordination, Lama Thubten Phurbu has studied under 14 great masters and is skilled in both the Sutras and Tantras. He has received a series of teachings and oral transmissions from His Holiness Kangurwa Shangba Thubten Gelek Leshe Gyatso Chokyi Rinpoche (甘珠瓦桑巴土登格莱嘉措秋吉仁波切) including the Collected Works of Lama Tsongkhapa and His Two Spiritual Sons, the Collected Works of His Holiness Pabongka Rinpoche and the empowerments of Yamantaka, Cakrasamvara, and Vajrayogini.
He has also received various teachings, oral transmissions, initiations and empowerments from Khenpo Denma Lodro (堪布登玛罗曲), Namkha Gyachen Rinpoche (囊卡嘉衬仁波切), Sakya Riten Khenpo (萨嘉派乐登堪布) and Sonam Gyatso.
Lama Thubten Phurbu has also founded various Buddhist associations in different provinces. In 2003, he established the Manjushri Whispered Lineage Books Distribution Society (文殊耳传庄严印经会), which aims to preserve the many Sutras and commentaries that are no longer in print. In 2006, he also built the Liberation Bodhi Stupa (见解脱菩提宝塔).
These days, Lama Thubten Phurbu returns to his village every summer where he makes thousands of tsa tsas in the image of Lama Tsongkhapa, the Three Long Life Deities (Amitayus, White Tara, and Ushnishavijaya), Vajrasattva, and so on. These tsa tsas are made from clay that has been infused with traditional Tibetan medicines. When completed, they are then placed inside the local village shrine to bless the area and its residents.
During the winter months, he engages in various retreats such as those concentrating on the Vajrasattva practice, as well as fire pujas.
Although Lama Thubten Phurbu leads a simple life, he gathered his family and friends to fundraise for a 20-foot-tall thangka of His Eminence Nianzhi Rinpoche. After it was painted, the thangka was then blessed and offered to his guru.
In 2015, at the request of his students, Lama Thubten Phurbu began visiting various provinces in China and Tibet to spread Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings, to teach the Lam Rim as well as the Mind Transformation teachings, and to promote the lineage of Dorje Shugden. Some of the places where he spreads Dorje Shugden’s practice is at Xia Feng Temple in the Yu Zhu District of Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, and in ChongQing City (重庆市酉阳县玉柱社区霞峰寺), China.
Lama Thubten Phurbu spends most of his time and funds on building stupas, making statues, printing Dharma books, supporting the poor and needy, as well as other virtuous and beneficial works. As China begins to allow the propagation of Buddhist teachings, especially the tradition of Lama Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugden, Lama Thubten Phurbu has increasingly greater opportunities to continue disseminating these authentic and holy practices in China and Tibet, backed by growing interest and support from the government.
The Outspoken Lama
Lama Thubten Phurbu is highly respected and well-known for bringing Dorje Shugden’s practice to many people and for being outspoken about the benefits of this practice. He has spoken against the Central Tibetan Administration’s (CTA) ban on Dorje Shugden in Tibet and the harm instigated against Dorje Shugden practitioners.
Lama Thubten Phurbu has opposed the CTA’s claim that there is no religious freedom in Tibet, and has given many examples to the contrary, such as how one has full freedom to become ordained, to study Buddhism and to make donations to temples and monasteries without interference from the Chinese authorities.
He also explains how the Chinese government protects all five major lineages of Tibetan Buddhism without bias, and that in recent years, they have provided healthcare services to tens of thousands of monks who gathered for the Gaden Monlam Chenmo Festival. The same also happens at the Nyingma Monlam, Kagyu Monlam and Bönpo Monlam festivals as well. In addition, the government supports the monks with monthly stipends and retirement plans so that they can concentrate on their studies.
Lama Thubten Phurbu has also been invited to consecrate Dorje Shugden tenkhangs (Protector chapels), perform Dorje Shugden pujas, and give talks about Dorje Shugden in monasteries throughout Tibet. All this, along with his other beneficial works to preserve and spread the Dharma so that people can see a real transformation in their lives and progress on their spiritual paths, has pleased Dorje Shugden very much.
Dorje Shugden’s pleasure was demonstrated through an oracle, who spontaneously took trance during one of Lama Thubten Phurbu’s Dharma talks. He was one of three Dorje Shugden oracles currently living in Lhasa. Such occurrences are accepted throughout the Tibetan Buddhist tradition as a sign of the Dharma Protector being pleased with the works of the lineage holders and masters.
Travelling to the West
An influential Gelug Lama, Lama Thubten Phurbu is also invited to give teachings all over the world. He has been invited to teach in Italy, Switzerland and Nepal as more and more western Dharma practitioners recognise and support the growth of pure Dharma.
While he was in Italy, a group of devotees had the rare opportunity to offer a long life puja (tenshug) to both His Eminence Gangchen Rinpoche and Lama Thubten Phurbu, in order to request them to live long and continue their beneficial activities of spreading the Dharma. A wild boar greeted Gangchen Rinpoche immediately after the puja and this is believed to be an auspicious omen from the female Buddha Marici, also known as Oserchenma in Tibet.
Lama Thubten Phurbu has also given a series of Lam Rim teachings at Rabten Choeling in Switzerland. During this time, the members of the centre also had the opportunity to offer a long life puja to Lama Thubten Phurbu.
Visiting Monasteries in India
Lama Thubten Phurbu has also visited Shar Gaden Monastery in Mundgod, India. This monastery was established in 2008 as a result of the ban on the practice of Dorje Shugden. It is one of two monasteries in South India that are beacons of hope for Dorje Shugden practitioners amidst the segregation and suffering created by the ban.
The visit to Shar Gaden was an opportunity for Lama Thubten Phurbu to collaborate with fellow Shugden practitioners to improve the general welfare of the Tibetan refugee community and enhance their spiritual practice. The visit also highlights the strong connections that have been forged between Dorje Shugden practitioners all over the world.
Due to the perceived security risks arising from the unresolved Sino-Tibetan conflict, strict travel restrictions are usually imposed on Tibetans travelling from the Tibet Autonomous Region to India, and vice versa. However, Lama Thubten Phurbu has been able to travel freely without restrictions, which is a clear indication of the Chinese government’s confidence in him and his good standing with them.
While others have left for the exile community in Dharamsala for a supposedly better life, Lama Thubten Phurbu has proven his loyalty to Tibet by remaining in the region despite strenuous conditions. He continues to work hard for the benefit of the locals and has really achieved a lot for both the Dharma and the Tibetan people.
Unfortunately, with measures such as the Dorje Shugden ban still in effect, the Tibetans-in-exile cannot benefit from this ready bridge to overcome the Sino-Tibetan stand-off, even though individuals such as Lama Thubten Phurbu have been cultivating relationships with the Chinese government for decades.
In truth, while the CTA continues to segregate the Tibetans and does nothing to open meaningful dialogue with the Chinese authorities, Lama Thubten Phurbu and other Dorje Shugden lamas work to repair the damage. In fact, it is people like Lama Thubten Phurbu who strive to foster harmony amongst the Tibetans in the hope of spreading and preserving the sacred teachings of the Buddha, Lama Tsongkhapa, and the holy lineage of Dorje Shugden to benefit others.

Thank you for sharing with us the biography of Lama Thupten Phurbu. It is not easy for us to learn about Dorje Shugden lama in Tibet as the information is not widely available on the internet. It is great to know that many high lamas in Tibet are also Dorje Shugden practitioners.
Dorje Shugden is an emanation of Buddha Manjushri, as a Dharma protector, he has the responsibility to protect and assist the Dharma protector, especially those who are very sincere. High lamas such as Pabongkha Rinpoche, Trijang Rinpoche, Zong Rinpoche, Tsem Rinpoche, Lama Yeshe, etc., all of them relied on Dorje Shugden. As a result, they were able to benefit so many people. Therefore, it is safe for us to rely on Dorje Shugden.

Dear friends,
Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.
You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.
Enclosed are the prayers in English, Chinese and Tibetan.
May you be safe, protected and blessed.

Divination (‘mo’) Text by Dorje Shugden
This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.
The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

A Daily Request for Wealth, Peace and Protection
Composed by H.E. Tsem Rinpoche
In the heavens there are myriad manifestations of the divine. All those manifestations specifically show us different aspects of divinity in order to be of benefit to all living beings. All the rupakaya forms of the divine have compassion, skillful means and wisdom. We invoke upon them whether we are happy, sad, down, lost, fulfilled, confused, empty, and during the whole range of emotions we constantly experience due to an untrained mind.
Understanding our nature, Great Wisdom Being Dorje Shugden, therefore all the more so, please hold us close to your bosom as an only child to a parent.
Though the manifestations of the divine need no offerings and gifts from us, we offer you supreme Manjushri Dorje Shugden a libation of tea, incense and mantras, in order to ask you to bless us, to be a part of our lives, to abide in our dwellings and to give us signs, omens and portents of both good and bad. When the negative arises, quell them immediately. Please increase the positive for my weary and worn mind as I lay my hopes in you.
When difficulties, problems and confusion arise, we ask you, who is but the culmination of all that is powerful, holy and omniscient to bless myself, family, loved ones, environment and even my pets. May I see wisdom, find hope, and be at peace.
I request you, O Divine Bhagavān Dorje Shugden, who wears a round dome hat and the three robes of a saffroned bhikshu, who wields a sword of liberty, justice and wisdom and clutches a wish-fulfilling jewel, who rides on a supreme lion of subjugation of all that is negative, to fulfill my wishes. I understand my wishes may not be the best, so I surrender to your wisdom for the outcome though it may not be what I have in mind. Please bless myself and everyone that we may enter into the supreme city of liberation.
Great Bhagavān Dorje Shugden, I request you sincerely from my heart to be a part of my life, bless my home, and grant me wisdom, solace and comfort, that I might be of service to others without agenda, and that I may focus out onto others and not be fixated on myself, creating more problems for all that I hold dear.
Bless me to become kinder, wiser, more compassionate, tolerant and very forgiving to all those who hurt and love me. In order to become close to you, Dorje Shugden, we must surrender the banal. We must abandon fixed views, projections and rigidity. Lastly, in my final moment when I leave this plane of existence, only the positive actions I have done will matter as everything and everyone will be left behind. Let me realise this and act upon this now! At this crucial moment, please may I have a vision of yourself, the powerful and merciful Dorje Shugden, to take me to where I may course in the sky to continue my journey of spiritual waxing.
I offer you saffron-coloured tea and my faith to fulfill my prayers and gain siddhis. By reciting your mantra, may healing, peace, love, long life, protection and perfect view of sunyata arise.
Mantra of fulfillment, peace and wisdom:
OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA
(It is good to recite this mantra daily as much as you like or your timing allows.)
I dedicate this supreme heartfelt prayer to the all-knowing Celestial and Supreme Protector Dorje Shugden, that I may quickly become a being of light, compassion, love and enlightenment.
Please play the audio included here to follow along with the prayer.

Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.
Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-
1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-
– Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
– Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
– Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
– Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
– Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.
2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.
3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokitesvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.
4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.
5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.
6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.
7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama
Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.
After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.
The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.
His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.
Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.
Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.
The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

This elderly & innocent monk in India was brutally attacked, find out why. Shocking – https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/?p=163953
“If the Dalai Lama, if His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by Dorje Shugden, then we might as well not practice Buddhism anymore. If His Holiness the Dalai Lama can have his life shortened by a so-called evil spirit, any evil spirit, then can he be Avalokiteshvara? So on one hand you say, we say, I say, everybody says, he is Avalokiteshvara; on the other hand you’re saying that he can be harmed by an evil spirit… Which one is it? Can he be harmed by an evil spirit or is he Avalokiteshvara? Do you think Avalokiteshvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Tara all take refuge in something else to protect themselves from Dorje Shugden? How illogical is that? How illogical of people to say His Holiness the Dalai Lama can be harmed by an evil spirit, any evil spirit or “Dorje Shugden” evil spirit. How is that possible?” – Tsem Tulku Rinpoche

Will the CTA (Tibetan govt in exile) and their supporters in East and West say voodoo is evil and cannot be practiced too? Will they advise against Voodoo and say its a demon’s practice and people who practice are bad too? Truth be told, no one has the right to say anything about anyone’s religion. Listen to what this man says in the short snagged clip because he speaks well and with the truth.

Lama Thubten Phurbu of Kham, Tibet, who compiled the long Kangsol of Dorje Shugden, is truly an amazing Lama with incredible achievements and accomplishments. He had mastered the five sciences and continued his studies in Tantra and Tantric practices, rituals and ritual instruments. He rose to become the chant master (umze) of the Longxi Monastery’s Tantric College and the monastery’s caretaker and a great Vajra Master. He became adept in the Tibetan language and mastered the script and the skill of composition in both verse and prose.
A great lineage master of the Gelug and Tsongkhapa Lineage, he had entered the Lamrim College where he had studied texts such as the Lamrim Chenmo, the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, and the long Dorje Shugden kangsol (fulfilment ritual). He had also gone on a pilgrimage to the three great Tsongkhapa monasteries. After a four year intensive study and debate course at the Kirti Monastery , he became one of the greatest debaters among his peers.
Then in 2015,at the request of his students, Lama Thubten Phurbu began visiting various provinces in China and Tibet to spread Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings, to teach the Lam Rim as well as the Mind Transformation teachings, and to promote the lineage of Dorje Shugden.
Today, he is renowned as a great teacher and respected greatly for spreading the practice of Dorje Shugden and especially for his courage in speaking up about the benefits of the practice. He is fearless in speaking up and refuting , with very strong evidence, the claims of CTA that there is no religious freedom in Tibet, China. He fiercely works to preserve and promote the Gelug Lineag and Je Tsongkhapa’s teachings too.
It was Venerable Lama Thubten Phurbu Rinpoche who, together with Venerable Geshe Tenzin Paljor, planned the recent Milestone International Dorje Shugden Conference in Nepal. Together, they passionately guided and faciltated the talks and discussions with a view towards greater unity and harmony within the international Shugden community.
This excerpt of the Swiss Television documentary presented in 1988 is a painful reminder of the hypocrisy and the sad reality of the oppression, discrimination, and ostracisation of Dorje Shugden practitioners. For 20 years, Dorje Shugden practitioners have endured this and no one supported their fight as the Tibetan leadership in exile continues to undermine their effort by denying the existence of this ban, and silencing their voice by peer pressure, flooding the media and fooling the general public with accusations that Shugden practitioners are political tools supported by the Chinese government to create discord within the Tibetan community. Please listen to their plea and please share this video far and wide to end this injustice.

I read many good things about Lama Thubten Phurbu. Something of significant about this article is that Lam Thubten Phurbu has much freedoms to go around the world. The Chinese government is very sensitive to lamas and gurus who wish to bring buddhism to all over the world. Yet the degree of trust shown to Lama Thubten Phurbu, shows great trust by the Chinese government to Lama Thubten Phurbu and also he benefits people and the public.
Lama Thubten Phurbu is indeed incredible to have achieved so much since young. After so much of CTA’s propaganda accusing China of religious and cultural suppression, Lama Thubten Purbu certainly cleared the false accusations. Clearly the trust that China government has for Lama Thubten Phurbu shows his propitiation Dharma and religious activities to be without political agenda. Contrary to CTA’s claims, China do support religious growth, what more even to the extent of setting up funds for the monks’ retirement funds. It is also very clear that CTA is creating fear in their people to delay negotiations with China and to remain as refugee status for easy sponsorship monies.
As Lama Thubten Phurbu’s religious activities grows and spread, all the more red faced CTA would be to be proven wrong in their propaganda accusation. The Dalai Lama’s wish to return to Tibet could have been achieved if CTA were to stop their negative activities, reunite their people (by lifting the Dorje Shugden ban) and reach out to China through trusted and respected Masters like Lama Thubten Phurbu. Upon examination, Lama Thubten Phurbu as many Shugden Lamas are non-political nor sectarian as they propounded the Dharma as according to the lineage practices they received from their Gurus.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us the special Lama Thubten Phurbu and his incredible dharma activities and how practicing Protector Dorje Shugden is non-sectarian and can only help the Dharma to spread in benefit.
It is wonderful that the Chinese government has started to do much for the propagation of Buddhism inTibet. As lama Thubten Phurbu explained: –
“how the Chinese government protects all five major lineages of Tibetan Buddhism without bias, and that in recent years, they have provided healthcare services to tens of thousands of monks who gathered for the Gaden Monlam Chenmo Festival. The same also happens at the Nyingma Monlam, Kagyu Monlam and Bönpo Monlam festivals as well. In addition, the government supports the monks with monthly stipends and retirement plans so that they can concentrate on their studies.”
This is a bold and new move by a government that recognizes that people need a spiritual practice to be better people, which in turn will help the country advance. A country needs to invest in their citizens, positively.
Through these, lamas like Lama Thubten Purbu are better able to bring the teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa to benefit more people.
May Lama Thubten Phurbu have stable health and long life to continue his work to benefit sentient beings.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us the work of other great DS Lamas. If it was not because of the ban, he would have been to even more places to spread Dharma. It is very clear to see DS Lamas do not mix religion with politic. All they do is to give Dharma teachings, nothing else. May DS ban be lifted very soon so many people can learn pure Dharma from very qualified teachers.
As a matter of fact, it is said that people like Lama Thubten Phurbu who is striving hard to foster harmony among the Tibetans in the hope of spreading and preserving the sacred teachings of the Buddha, Lama Tsongkhapa and the holy lineage of Dorje Shugden to benefit others. Since his ordination, Thubten Phurbu, also known as Tsangyang Gyatso was said to have studied under 14 great masters and is skilled in both the Sutras and Tantras. He is a well-known and learned gelug Lama, who has many beneficial projects in Tibet and China, but occassionally travels to the West India and Nepal to give teachings on Lama Tsongkhapa’s precious lineage as well as Dorje Shugden’s practice too! At the request of his students, Lama Thubten Phurba began visiting various provinces in China and Tibet to spread Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings and to promote the lineage of Dorje Shugden there. It is said that Lama Thubten Phurbu spends most of his time and funds on building Stupas, making statues, printing dharma books, supporting the poor and needy as well as other virtuous and harmonious works. Such philantrophic and meaningful actions of Lama Thubten has greatly attracted and enhanced China”s respect and appreciation of Lama Thubten Phurbu’s good work and sincerity , which will be of a great benefit for all Tibetans as well as for the Dharma! As an influential gelug Lama, Lama Thubten Phurbu has also been invited to give teachings all over the World, such as Italy, Switzerland and Nepal, as more and more western Dharma practitioners recognize and support the growth of Dharma! Truly an incredible, highly respectful, influential, outspoken and sacrficing high Lama, Thubten Phurbu really is!
Lama Thubten Phurbu is a well-known and learned Gelug Lama from Kham, Tibet. He is a Dorje Shugden practitioner who travels occasionally to the West, India and Nepal to spread Tsongkhapa’s lineage and Dorje Shugden practice. He is also associated with the North America Gelug Buddhist Association to preserve the Gelug tradition in America as well as around the world.
Lama Thubten Phurbu has great opportunities to spread Lama Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugden practice in China and Tibet because China has freedom of religious. He has been promoting the benefits of Dorje Shugden’s practice and he spoke against the CTA ban on Dorje Shugden in Tibet. Besides, Chinese government has been giving much support on Tibetan Buddhism by giving protections to five major lineages of the Tibetan Buddhism without bias. For example, the Chinese government provides healthcare to monks who gathered for the Gaden Monlam Chenmo Festival and other School and also monthly stipends and retirement plans for monks.
Despite CTA ban on Dorje Shugden, Lama Thubten Phurbu visits to Shar Gaden Monastery has bring hopes and courage to fellow Dorje Shugden practitioners. They work together to improve general welfare of the Tibetan refugee community and their spiritual practice. Lama Thubten Phurbu hardwork in spreading the holy teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa and Dorje Shugden signifying to bring peace and harmony to the Tibetan refugees in India.
It is so heart warming to read these article of Lama Thubten Phurbu who is well known , respected Lama . It is also interesting to note that Lama Thubten Phurbu has done so much speaking up on the ban on Dorje Shugden and has contributed many beneficial projects in Tibet and China. He travels occasionally to the West, India and Nepal to give teachings. The Chinese has high regard and trust of Lama Thubten Phurbu to enable him to travel to and forth India which is a restricted zone for Tibetans. As he travelled to spread Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings, to teach the Lam Rim as well as the Mind Transformation teachings, and to promote the lineage of Dorje Shugden. Wonderful and respected Lama Thubten Phurbu has even compiled many prayers ,,,,,,Long (rgyas pa) Kangsol (sger bskang).
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing
Really an inspiring write up about Lama Thubten Phurbu who made so much sacrifices for his studies and practice to benefit others. I respect Lama Thubten Phurbu for his outspokeness to make things possible for Dorje Shugden practitioners to have religious freedom . Reminds me of my wonderful and caring guru,Tsem Rinpoche who is always making sacrifices to benefit people whom he doesn’t even know. Hope there would be more people who are always able to make sacrifices to benefit others. Thank you very much Rinpoche and blog team for sharing this very good article and blessed precious text of Lama Thubten Phurbu ??

People in this modern era can have the opportunity to know more about this encient sacred and powerful practice. And all this practice will be keeping here life after life. May more people can be connnected to Gelug lineage.
