Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen is perhaps one of the more notable previous lives of Dorje Shugden. In this incarnation, he is said to have made the promise to arise as a Dharma Protector to protect the precious teachings of his teacher Lama Tsongkhapa, thus laying the foundation for Dorje Shugden to manifest later, in another incarnation.

Duldzin, which is an abbreviation of Dulwa Zinpa, literally means “Vinaya Holder” in Tibetan. This is actually a title bestowed upon him in recognition of his pure monkhood and incredible knowledge and understanding of the Vinaya texts — scriptures that contain teachings by Lord Buddha on monastic discipline.

Later, he became the heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa Lobsang Drakpa (1357-1419) who founded the Gelug order of Tibetan Buddhism, along with another disciple, Gyaltsab Dharma Rinchen (1364-1432). Yet, despite Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen being such a close disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa, very little is known about his life.

Life and Times

In 1374, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen was born in Drangyul in the central province of Ü, Tibet. He was a follower of the strict Kadampa monastic tradition; even his teacher, Lama Tsongkhapa praised him for his steadfast adherence to monastic discipline. In fact, many considered him equal to Lama Tsongkhapa in terms of attainments.

He is regarded by some followers of the Gelug order as part of the original Je Yab Se Sum, a term denoting Lama Tsongkhapa and his two heart sons. This is because Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen was initially appointed as the first successor to Lama Tsongkhapa’s throne, the seat of the Gaden Tripas. However, he turned it down, preferring to uphold his teacher’s lineage in a different manner.

The throne of the Gaden Tripa was then offered to Gyaltsab Je instead. Thereafter, Khedrub Gelek Pelzang (1385-1438) was appointed as the second Gaden Tripa and he eventually displaced Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen as one of Lama Tsongkhapa’s two heart sons.

Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen received his monastic ordination from the great Drigung Choje and he studied under Drigung Kutok Nyernyipa. Then at Draktsen, he went on to study the Vinaya extensively along with the complete works of Buton Rinchen Drub (1290-1364). He met a number of teachers with the aim of receiving various teachings but when he met Lama Tsongkhapa, great faith spontaneously arose in his mind and he remained by this master’s side from that moment onward. He received many teachings, primarily on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment and entered deep retreats until he gained high levels of realisation.

After receiving initiations into the practices of the deities of the four classes of Tantra, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen entered into retreat and received visions of these deities within their respective mandalas.

It is said that Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, being a pure monk, kept his vows well, just as how one would guard his eyes. In addition, his main practice was Bodhicitta and thus, he became a great treasury of scriptural knowledge on both Sutra and Tantra as well as an ocean of realised qualities.

Previous Lives of Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen

There are three authentic sources which provide the same details with regards to the stories of the previous lives of Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen. These three sources are:

  1. The great abbot Karmavajra who had a pure vision of Vajrapani,
  2. Lama Umapa who had a pure vision of Manjushri, and
  3. Togden Jampel Gyatso who also had a vision of Manjushri

In the distant past, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen was born as a Brahmin boy by the name of Gopang Chapa, and in that lifetime, he placed a delicious food offering into the alms bowl of a Pratyekabuddha who was an emanation of the Buddha ‘Dispeller of Mistaken Faith.’ While making the offering, he prayed that in all future lifetimes, he would be able to uphold the sacred Dharma of all the Buddhas and that he would be able to disseminate the teachings to many beings in remote lands and establish them on the path to enlightenment.

Through the power of this noble aspiration, the Brahmin boy took rebirth as kings in remote lands who upheld the Dharma for six lifetimes, spreading the Doctrine to innumerable beings. Later, he took rebirth for many lifetimes as fully ordained monks who were erudite scholars and who propagated the holy Dharma in order to be of utmost benefit to sentient beings.

Maitreya Buddha

Thereafter, he took rebirth in the Heaven of the Thirty-three as the celestial being by the name of Shiway Tog or “Pinnacle of Peace.” In this incarnation, he was able to work for the benefit of many devas. Later, he took rebirth as a prince of the devas by the name of Shiway Nyingpo, “Peaceful Essence,” the heart disciple of the regent Maitreya, and he greatly benefited beings of this realm with the skilful deeds of a Bodhisattva. From there on, he took rebirth within the incarnation line of Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen.

It has been prophesied that, ultimately, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen will one day manifest complete enlightenment and become known as the Tathagata Jampay Wangpo, “Lord of Love.” This is what the Lord of Secrets, Vajrapani, proclaimed to the great abbot, Karmavajra, in a pure vision that the latter had. In Lama Umapa’s vision, Manjushri made the same claim. Togden Jampel Gyatso also received the same prediction in a pure vision of Manjushri after he made extensive requests.

Building Gaden Monastery

Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen was devoted to Lama Tsongkhapa, firmly believing that the Guru is the root of all good qualities and realisations. Thus, he always sought to delight Lama Tsongkhapa and would follow all his advice and instructions without breaking any commitments.

As time passed, a pressing need arose for a monastery to be established, as Lama Tsongkhapa was advancing in years and the effort of travelling around Tibet to give teachings was taking its toll on this great master. A physical monastery would provide a permanent place of residence, and a venue for teachings and discourses. These were the circumstances that led to the founding of Gaden Monastery in Lhasa.

The devoted disciple Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen took on the immense task of constructing the monastery in accordance with his Guru’s instructions and he did so diligently. He braved all hardships like a yogi who had abandoned all comfort in order to construct his meditation hut. He began by examining the site. Then, he requested formal permission from the Sangha to begin construction. Once the Sangha had granted permission, he was appointed as the head builder.

Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen took responsibility for the entire construction, from the excavation of the earth to laying the foundations of the monastery to putting the finishing touches on the temple such as the placement of the representations of the Three Jewels on the main altar. Upon completion of the monastery, he invited Lama Tsongkhapa to inspect the temple and to perform the consecration rites. Everything was done in accordance with the Vinaya. Thus, Gaden Monastery was established based on pure guru devotion and adherence to monastic discipline.

Making the Promise

It was observed on multiple occasions that during the teaching sessions of Lama Tsongkhapa at Gaden Monastery, a white dove would circle the hall, flying above the Sangha. Gyaltsab Dharma Rinchen and Khedrub Gelek Pelzang knew the bird was in actuality an emanation of the Dharma Protector Nechung but said nothing. Nechung would also appear as a boy dressed in white. One day, he came before Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen and said, “You must give me a helper!”

Later, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen became the Elder of the Sangha and he would sit at the front during Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings. As the teachings were going on, Nechung would continue to manifest in the same manner. Finally, Duldzin approached Nechung and told him, “It won’t do for you to keep coming here and disturbing my Lama when he is giving teachings!” The boy then replied,

“I am here to look for an uncommon protector of Lama Tsongkhapa’s special lineage of Nagarjuna’s view. As I have sworn to Guru Rinpoche to be a protector of Buddhism in general, I cannot fulfil that role. So, can you arise as an uncommon protector of your Lama’s teachings?”

“I’ll give you whatever help you need!” Duldzin replied. When he said that, the boy said, “This is my purpose! It is your help that I have been waiting for! Now, among all of Je Rinpoche’s disciples, you have agreed to help.” After saying that, the boy disappeared. That was how Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen came to make the promise to arise as an uncommon Dharma Protector. He would go on to fulfil his promise in another lifetime and arise as Dorje Shugden, the uncommon protector of Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings. For this reason, the central deity in Dorje Shugden’s mandala is known as Duldzin Dorje Shugden.

From left to right: Panchen Sonam Drakpa, Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen and Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen. After Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen made the promise to arise as an uncommon Dharma Protector, he would go on to fulfil this promise in his future incarnation as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, who arose as the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. Other Great Deeds

Following the instructions of Lama Tsongkhapa, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen founded Tsunmo Tsel Monastery, which literally means “Queen’s Garden”, on the site of the Gyamadar Palace, Jampa Migyur Ling in Urutoi, where the Great Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo was born and where the queen’s retinue usually resided in the royal garden. Under his care, the Sangha community in the monastery grew to over 800 monks.

Duldzin2

Tsunmo Tsel, the monastery founded by Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen in 1420 in central Tibet

According to historical records, he was also the founder of Meldro Chakar Monastery. He sometimes resided at other monasteries and retreats in order to impart precious teachings and initiations. Once he travelled to the famous Tsel Gungtang Monastery where he gave eloquent teachings on the Lamrim and advice on the Vinaya. He also imparted heartfelt advice and teachings to the monastic community of Tsel Gungtang to maintain pure monastic discipline and uphold the spirit of the great Mahayana tradition. Thus, the entire monastic community became greatly devoted to Lama Tsongkhapa‘s tradition.

When Lama Tsongkhapa finally entered clear light, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen did not become his Guru’s successor although he was requested to do so. Instead, Gyaltsab Je (Gyaltsab Dharma Rinchen) was enthroned as the Gaden Tripa, the representative of Lama Tsongkhapa on earth. In order to preserve the precious remains of his Guru, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen had them enshrined in a sandalwood container. Then he placed this in a vase (bhumpa) made from pure beaten silver. He took charge of the funerary arrangements, made extensive offerings at the temple and so forth, completing all the necessary rituals.

Death and Legacy

At the age of sixty-three, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen made his final journey to Tsunmo Tsel Monastery. Not long after, he passed away. He is said to have taken rebirth in Tushita, by the side of Lama Tsongkhapa. Among Duldzin’s legacies are the great disciples he produced and the monasteries he built. His disciples included all of the most important Gelug lamas of his day including Jamyang Choje Tashi Pelden (1379-1449), the founder of Drepung Monastery.

Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen was himself a great scholar, yogi and master of Sutra and Tantra. In order to preserve the precious teachings of the Buddha, he composed a number of important works on the Vinaya such as The Great Precepts of Vinaya, Advice for Novices and The Ritual for the Three Bases.

In addition, he composed sadhanas for mandala rituals and commentaries, consecration rites, outer offerings for Cakrasamvara, a manual for making offerings to front-generated Akshobya Guhyasamaja in reliance upon a heaped mandala, Gandhapa Five-Deity Sadhana, Accomplishment of Mahacakra Vajrapani, Mandala Ritual for Luipa Cakrasamvara, Sadhana of Red and Black Yamantaka, Mandala Rituals of Vajradhatu Ishvari, Ritual of Kunrig Vairochana, Commentary on Purifying Lower Realms, and Ritual Practice in the Three Families of Kriya Tantra. His written works were quite extensive especially in terms of Tantra. Amongst all these texts, he was particularly well known for his writings on Kunrig Vairochana, which is based on the Sarvadurgatiparisodhanatantra.

Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen’s best known legacy is the construction of Gaden Monastery, a 600-year-old monastic institution which continues to exist to this day. The monastery continues to produce great scholars, yogis and masters in accordance with the stainless tradition of Lama Tsongkhapa.

Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche’s Account of the Opening of Duldzin’s Stupa

The following account is extracted from His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche’s autobiography, The Illusory Play. It gives a firsthand description of the experience Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche had when he witnessed the opening of Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen’s funerary stupa. The account reveals the remarkable preservation of Duldzin’s sacred remains and the unmistaken fragrance emanating from them, which signified his pure monkhood.

“That evening we went through the pass and then, passing through Lhari Go, Kongpo, Gyamda, and so forth. When we arrived at Ozer Gyang we were met and escorted by representatives of Ganden Dokang Kangtsän and Samling Mitsän. Dokang Kangtsän had prepared for us to stay at Tsunmo Tsel Monastery, and we spent a day there.

We made offerings there before the stupa of Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen. It was long known that the stupa with Duldzin Rinpoche’s reliquary body was at Tsunmo Tsel Monastery, and, in the meantime, because it was necessary to make some repairs to the place where it was being kept, Ganden Lhopa Gyalse Tulku and Dokang Geshe Chodrag of the monastery administration brought me to perform argha–water–puja.

When we broke the stupa open, among the holy objects placed inside, there was a wooden box where inside was the entire holy body with no decay and it had grown quite a bit of hair! It was wrapped in two namjar (monk’s robes), an old and a new one. There was an antique bowl in front of the body that seemed to have been filled with fruit. The fragrant scent of pure morality spread throughout a large area, confirming what I had heard from Geshe Chodrag while at the monastery.”

It is very good to read about one of the greats of our tradition, Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen. Duldzin Drakpa Gyeltsen was not after position or fame, and perhaps his role was not to become the Gaden Tripa, but to arise as the protector Dorje Shugden to preserve the Gaden tradition and benefit many sentient beings.

Mantras are sacred verbalized words that invoke the protection and blessings of the deity to whom the mantra is ascribed. Mantras are also the manifestations of Buddhas in the form of ‘sounds’, hence the various mantras of Dorje Shugden contain the essence of the Protector.

    OM BENZA WIKI BITANA SOHA

Dorje Shugden’s mantra for peace 平和咒语

Reincarnation Lineage Prayer of the Incarnate Master Dragpa Gyaltsan

This prayer also, to the incarnate master Dragpa Gyaltsan through his reincarnations, has been spoken for the benefit of all migratory beings by the Vajra Shugden who protects the holy Dharma, at the sacred abode Choling in response to requests from many devout monks and nuns and householders. Gedun Choejor was the scribe. May this serve as cause for all migratory beings swiftly attaining in one lifespan the state of Vajradhara.

    May there be auspiciousness!

Lord Manjushri, the sole father of all kindhearted Victors,
Lord Tsongkhapa, whose renown fills this world,
Lord Yamantaka who has arisen to subdue the intractable:
Bless us supplicants with common and uncommon attainments!

Lord Sambhota, the best of scholars,
Loden Sherab, the savant in all classics,
    Lords Naropa and Khyungpo Naljor:
Bless us supplicants with common and uncommon attainments!

    Ralo Dorjedrag and master Khutoen,
Masters Sakya Shri and Choeku Woezer,
And to the Omniscient Lord Buton:
Bless us supplicants with common and uncommon attainments!

    The all-pervading Tsarchen, and Sonam Dragpa;
    Sonam Yeshe, prominent among saviors of beings;
Sonam Geleg, in whom merit and virtues shone like the sun:
Bless us supplicants with common and uncommon attainments!

Dragpa Gyaltsan, the master leading nyig-dhue1 beings to liberation,
Whose very name, just hearing, frees from the lower migrations,
Who leads to liberation any who supplicates single-mindedly:
To this protector of teachings and beings of three worlds we pray.

Ngawang Jinpa the emanation in saffron robes, and
Ngawang Tenzin, upholder of the victory banner of the teaching,
And Jetsun Losang Geleg, the great master:
Bless us supplicants with common and uncommon attainments!

Losang Tenzin, the victory banner of Dharma who comes
As kings, ministers and monks for beings and dharma’s sake,
In successions endless as ripple in water:
To such past and future emanations we pray.

By the truth power of the Three Jewels,
By the enlightened actions of oceanic dharmapalas
Such as the Four-faced Lord and the Dorje Shugden,
May all beings live well and in happiness.

As you embody all Three Roots2,
For us all migratory beings here, in the future, and in bardho3,
In all happy and bad times we have none but you:
Hold us, without separation, with parental love.

When in future you enact the enlightened deeds,
As attaining Enlightenment as Buddha Rabsal among others,
May we and all other beings connected with us,
Be the first to taste the nectar of your vast and profound words.

May we, and all sentient beings, in all lifetimes,
Come into contact with the Second Buddha’s teachings,
May we all take on the going forth, and take
All sentient beings across the ocean of samsara.

Reincarnation Lineage Prayer of Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsan

This praise to the reincarnation lineage of the supreme incarnation Dragpa Gyaltsan has been composed by the monk Losang Choekyi Gyaltsan (The 4th Panchen Lama) at the prayer hall of Tashi Lhunpo on account of fervent requests from Legpa Gyaltsan and many other attendants of the master.

    May there be auspiciousness!

    The one whose renown permeates the world;
The great being holding aloft the banner,
Of the Second Buddha, happiness and wellbeing’s source:
At that great master’s feet we pray.

At the feet of the World Teacher with the ten powers,
You invoked the power of truth with pure superior intent,
Causing flowers to fall like rains.
We pray at the feet of that great master.

    The Guide of all migratory beings both man and god;
    The treasury of all knowledge and attainments in dharma;
The great hero who strove for the supreme liberation:
We pray at the feet of Choekyi Jhangchub.

The one whose greatness, on account of pure prayer,
    Was like that of a second Buddha;
And was supreme Guide to fortunate ones of India and Tibet:
We pray at the feet of that great being.

In the sky of the great bliss of Dharmakaya,
The radiant orb of the three bodies of the Buddha is full circle,
Radiating a million rays of enlightened activities: We pray at the feet
Of that opener of a million lotuses of benefit and wellbeing.

We pray at the feet of Master Buton, the unrivalled
Amongst all those who are scholars and realized ones,
In upholding and spreading the Buddha’s teaching,
By example in teaching and practice.

With an intellect superbly trained from the past,
Your mind joyously bloomed in all profound paths.
With single-minded effort you attained supreme realization.
We pray at the feet of that supreme and realized master.

From the vast lotus gardens of phuntsog* merit,
Myriad lotuses, with hundreds of petals, of learning and practice, bloom.
The fragrant scents of good name and deed dispel the ancient sicknesses
Of migrant beings: At the feet of that master we pray.

By the wish-granting jewel of merit and wisdom,
You became a crown jewel of both man and gods,
Its hundred rays of good deed dispelling the dark ignorance
Of all migrant beings: At your feet we pray.

The vast celestial mansion of virtuous accumulation of merits,
Overflows with jewels of the good path of the three trainings.
We pray at the feet, of its dweller─a guide of all beings─
Attired in the magnificence of enlightened deeds.

In holding aloft the victory banner
Of the sutra and tantra teachings of the Second Buddha:
In this you are unrivalled in all three worlds.
We pray at the feet of this noble tutor.

The source of renown and wellbeing and happiness,
Is the Buddha’s teachings. May the chief of all who uphold this banner
Live for long for the sake of innumerable beings to be tamed!
May his phuntsog* enlightened deeds spread to the ten directions!

By the merit of praising in this manner, may we never be
Separated from the protection of noble spiritual mentors!
Progressing swiftly in the supreme vehicle’s path,
May we swiftly attain the state of the three kayas!

I’ve enjoyed reading about Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, who was a previous incarnation of the “Great King” Protector Dorje Shugden. The promise he made to rise as a Dharma Protector to protect Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings “specifically Nargajuna’s Middle view” which Tsongkhapa taught so perfectly, is inspiring and shows how deeply committed he was to helping sentient beings in the future. He was a great master of sutra and tantra and kept his vows strongly. He was also very humble and turned down the opportunity to be Tsongkahaps successor as the Ganden Tripa. His ” best known legacy is the construction of Gaden Monastery, a 600-year-old monastic institution which continues to exist to this day. The monastery continues to produce great scholars, yogis and masters in accordance with the stainless tradition of Lama Tsongkhapa.”
His next incarnation would be the legendary scholar Panchen Sonem Drakpa where he continued to help many beings.

    Dear friends,

Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.

You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.

Enclosed are the prayers in English, Chinese and Tibetan.

May you be safe, protected and blessed.

“The 4th Zhabdrung Rinpoche of Bhutan and Dorje Shugden” blog post which was published June 8, 2018 already has exactly at the moment 152,744 views!! Over 150k views!!! Amazing!! The views will keep growing as time elapses of course.

This indicates many Bhutanse and Buddhists around the world will now know that Dorje Shugden is connected to Bhutan and their Kagyu Lineage. Dorje Shugden was promoted by the highest lama of Bhutan namely the 4th Zhabdrung Rinpoche himself. So Dorje Shugden will help and protect anyone and is not sectarian as they accuse him to be. People in the Kagyu school of Buddhism also practised Dorje Shugden and Dorje Shugden assisted them lovingly. Dorje Shugden being an emanation of Manjushri will help anyone who calls upon him regardless of their background and religion.

Good job to our writers, researchers, editors, technical team, supporting team and Kechara people who promoted this blog post on social media. Now more will come to understand how pervasive Dorje Shugden is in all the lineages of Tibetan Buddhism although the Tibetan leadership in-exile tries to hide this truth. Thank you everyone for promoting Dorje Shugden to benefit many. We were all very harmonious before the unethical ban against Dorje Shugden practitioners. Since the inception of the ban in 1996, there has been no benefits and instead so much disharmony among Tibetan Buddhists around the world. Many hundreds have spoken up about this point where we want harmony back. There should never be a ban against any spiritual practice.

His Eminence Kyabje Dagom Rinpoche’s incarnation is in Lhasa visiting. He is visiting the 350-year-old Trode Khangsar chapel dedicated to Dorje Shugden. He is paying homage to the powerful statue of Dorje Shugden housed in this sacred chapel. Both the chapel and statue of Dorje Shugden were commissioned by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama. The Great 5th Dalai Lama also composed a prayer to be recited daily to Dorje Shugden.

Dagom Rinpoche’s previous lives were great masters, scholars and practitioners of Dorje Shugden. Now this new incarnation of Dagom Rinpoche is offering gold on the face of Dorje Shugden in homage and worship to this very sacred statue of Dorje Shugden housed in Lhasa for the last 350 years. This is a very traditional Tibetan method of paying homage to holy images, which is by offering gold with prayers.

The Tibetan leadership wrongly says if you practise Dorje Shugden you will take rebirth into the three lower realms. Hundreds of lamas from the Sakya, Kagyu and Gelugpa schools of Buddhism have practised Dorje Shugden and their incarnations returned. Many of the incarnations are recognised by His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself. So this shows if you practise Dorje Shugden, only benefits come and no harm will come. The very fact Dagom Rinpoche’s incarnation is back, is clear evidence that Dorje Shugden’s practice is beneficial.

May Dagom Rinpoche’s current incarnation live a very long life.

Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen is one of the more famous previous incarnations of Dorje Shugden. He is one of the heart disciples of Lama Tsongkhapa, the second Buddha. When Lama Tsongkhapa enter into clear light, Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen was the disciple that was chosen to take over Lama Tsongkhapa’s throne. However, he refused to ascend to the throne because he wanted to pursue another path to spread his Guru’s teachings.

We can conclude that his attainments must be among the best of all Lama Tsongkhapa’s students for the sangha to appoint him to take over Lama Tsongkhapa’s throne. He was also the disciple who built Gaden monastery according to Vinaya.

It is also during this lifetime that Dulzin Drakpa Gyaltsen promised to arise an uncommon protector to protect the special teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa. Nechung manifested as a white dove circulating Lama Tsongkhapa when he was giving teachings. Dulzin with his clairvoyance knows that it was Nechung and he asked Nechung why is he disturbing his lama while he is giving teachings. Nechung replied that he seeks the help of a protector to protect the special teachings of Lama Tsongkhapa. Dulzin replied saying that he promised to help. This is the promise that subsequently escalated into the events that lead to the rise of Dorje Shugden.

Divination (‘mo’) Text by Dorje Shugden

This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.

The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen was an important Gelugpa great scholar, yogi and master of Sutra and Tantra. He was an important disciple of Je Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school. Dulzin Drakpa Gyaltsen has benefited so many people in the past by reborn again and again. He has made a promise to arise as a Dharma Protector to protect the precious teachings of his teacher Lama Tsongkhapa. He was devoted to Lama Tsongkhapa, following all his advice and instructions without breaking any commitments. Interesting read . He has devoted his whole life to benefits many people through his teachings and building monasteries.
Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David for this interesting sharing of a GREAT Lama.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is in Dharamsala, which is broken into two parts. Upper Dharamsala is where the Dalai Lama’s palace is located with his audience room and main prayer hall. It is also the location of the Dialectics School, Gaden Shartse’s guesthouse, restaurants, tourist hotels and main tourist areas.

A short ride down takes you to the lower part of Dharamsala where the Tibetan government is located. It is the location of the Tibetan Parliament in Exile, Nechung monastery, the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, the Tibetan arts centre…it’s all in one area. And the reason why it’s split into upper and lower Dharamsala is because the area is mountainous.

The Library of Tibetan Works and Archives was established by the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government to preserve all the ancient texts – both secular and spiritual – of Tibet and in the process, translate them into various languages like English. This book, Overview of Buddhist Tantra, by Panchen Sonam Drakpa was one of the books translated into English. What’s very interesting is that the book very clearly says that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, one of the five main disciples of Lama Tsongkhapa. It also says that after that, he was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen.

So the book is basically saying that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, Panchen Sonam Drakpa and Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen – the three Drakpas – are of the same mindstream.

Now that’s very peculiar because if Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen’s previous life is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, the renowned composer of 45 volumes of Dharma texts, the abbot of three monasteries AND the 15th Gaden Tripa, the holder of Lama Tsongkhapa’s throne…if that’s the case, how can Panchen Sonam Drakpa take rebirth as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen and become an evil spirit and have a negative mind?

Prior to Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, he was Panchen Sonam Drakpa and before that, he was Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa. How can a heart disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa reincarnate as the erudite master Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and then die and reincarnate as Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen…and then Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, due to a bad and negative prayer, become the evil spirit Dorje Shugden? How is that possible? Logically, it’s not.

What’s incredible is that all of this was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives under the Dalai Lama’s guidance. They contradict themselves because on one hand, the Tibetan leaders say Dorje Shugden is an evil spirit. On the other hand they’re printing a book saying that Panchen Sonam Drakpa, whose later incarnation became Dorje Shugden, is of this illustrious mindstream.

So how can the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, which is under the auspices of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government, print the translation of a book composed by the previous incarnation of a so-called evil spirit? How can they then say in the book that Panchen Sonam Drakpa’s previous life is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen, and his next life was Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen?

Prior to the Dorje Shugden ban and controversy, everyone in Tibet knew that Dorje Shugden is Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen, that Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen is Panchen Sonam Drakpa, and that Panchen Sonam Drakpa is Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen. The three Drakpas, they are one mindstream emanating again and again to benefit other beings.

And as we all know, Tulku Drakpa Gyaltsen became Dorje Shugden so it totally doesn’t make sense to call him an evil spirit, then highlight all of his previous lives as erudite masters, and publish all of this information under their own library. So you can see the contradictions. You can read all of this for yourself in Overview of Buddhist Tantra, which was printed by the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives.

GENERAL PRESENTATION OF THE CLASSES OF TANTRA,
CAPTIVATING THE MINDS OF THE FORTUNATE ONES

    BY
    PANCHEN SONAM DRAGPA
    (Pan-chen bSod-nams grags-pa, 1478-1554)

    O Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel! (Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal!)
In the vast expanse of Your bodhi-mind,
The mind that the Buddhas have lauded for as many as
    one hundred times,
You have developed “merit” shining like the sun.
Through Your skill in learning, debate and writing,
As illuminating as one hundred thousand sun rays,
You have developed in You a complete knowledge of
    the entire sutras and tantras,
Resembling a garden of flowers in full bloom.
    The power of Your speech is like the sun;
The fame of your name has reached the three realms of
    this world.
O Sonam Dragpa, the teacher of teachers!
I bow down at your feet.

In the vast garden of Your great teachings,
The intelligent young people gather for
The ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission,’
Just as they are attracted to
The one hundred thousand types of nectar
Dripping from a flower of one hundred petals.
May I be able to experience
The taste of the secret tantra!

Panchen Choje Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen Chos-rje bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the holder of sutra and Vajrayana teachings, was a master whose outstanding learning and spiritual accomplishments are well known by all the learned ones in Tibet. His first incarnation came in the form of one of the five prestigious disciples of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) and became known as Vinaya Holder (Dulzin) Dragpa Gyaltsen (Gragspa rgyal-mtshan). Then came Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal), the author of the present text. The next was Nagri Tulku Dragpa Gyaltsen (mNga’-ris sPrul-sku Grags-pa rgyal-mtshan). In this way, a line of his incarnations, each with the Dragpa (gragspa) surname, followed successively.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was born in the 14th century in Tsetang (rTsed-thang) in the Lhoka (Lho-kha) region of Central Tibet. He entered the great seat of learning, Sera Thekchenling (Se-ra theg-chen-gling) monastic university, where he became the personal disciple of spiritual master Donyo Dangden (Dhon-yod dang-ldan) and His Holiness the Second Dalai Lama Gedun Gyatso (dGe-‘dun rgya-mtsho). Under them, he studied the entire teachings of sutra, tantra and their commentaries, and became known for his outstanding learning. He also received from them the empowerments, reading transmissions, guides and instructions of the entire body of spiritual training. On becoming the fully blessed one, the Dalai Lama appointed him the abbot of the Loseling (Blo-gsalgling) college, one of the four colleges of Drepung (‘Bras-dpung)- the most prestigious monastic university in Tibet before 1959, with over 10,000 monks on its register. He continued to be the abbot of this college for the next six years; and after him the tenure for each of his successors in this position was fixed for a period of six years, a rule that is followed even today.

He was then appointed the head of the Gelugpa (dGe-lugs-pa) order, the throne holder of Gaden (dGa’-ldan), thus becoming the 15th regent of Lord Tsongkhapa (Tsong-khapa), the second Buddha. In his eulogy to him, Khedrub Gelek Pelsang (mKhas-grub dGe-legs dpal- bzang) says:

O Lama, the second successor of the Unsubduable One,
The regent of the Lord of Dharma,
    You are the one who made the virtuous qualities thrive;
You are the one who ascended to the golden throne uplifted
    by the fearless lions.
    May Your success thrive forever!

He continued to be the throne holder for the next seven years, during which time he promoted the spread of Lord Tsongkhapa’s (Tsong-kha-pa) precious teachings, the Gelug (dGe-lugs) tradition, across the land in all directions. He also paid special attention to the practice of monastic rules and the learning and meditation of Buddhism in the monasteries such as Sera (Se-ra), Drepung (‘Bras-spungs), Kyomolung (sKyo-mo-lung), Phagmo Chode (Phag-mo chos-sde), Nyeding (Nye-sdings), Ödna (’Od-sna) and Chöde Rinchen (Chos-sde rin-chen) etc. and improved them to a great extent. He taught the Third Dalai Lama Sonam Gyatso (bSod-nams rGya-mtsho) as the latter’s spiritual master. It was from him that the Dalai Lama received the name Sonam (bSod-nams).

His contributions in the literary field are enormous; and, indeed, they are the most valuable of all his contributions. Tsongkhapa (Tsong-kha-pa) has rightly said:

    Of all one’s deeds,
The ‘deeds of speech’ are the most valuable.

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) was a person with an extraordinary talent for teaching, debate and writing. In his colophon to Bu mey chi don zab don sel wey dron mey (dBu ma’i spyi don zab don gsal ba’i sgron me), he wrote:

In the field of teaching, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would outdo them in this field, Arya Asanga and his
    brother transmigrated into another realm.

In the field of debate, I am [next to none!] Knowing that
I would find out the areas they had contradicted and
that I would examine them and put forth my arguments,
the logician Dignaga (Digh-naga) and Dharmakirti tactfully
    bypassed me.

In the field of writing, I am [next to none!] [In my eyes,]
Arya-sura was just good at spreading the works, which
are like ‘disputes~ between an insect and a field.’

I am the learned man. Peerless in the field of teaching,
    debate and writing!

For some this passage might sound utterly nonsensical, but the most learned master of our age, the talented teacher, logician and writer, the late tutor to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Yongdzin Trijang Dorjechang (Yongs-‘dzin Khri-byang rDorje-‘Chang), said: “Now, some people of our time, who consider themselves learned scholars, think that this is utter nonsense; but they are wrong.”

Panchen Sonam Dragpa Pel (Panchen bSod-nams grags-pa-dpal) wrote over 45 volumes of books dealing with many different subjects, such as the commentaries on the sutras and tantras, the saddhana manuals of the tutelary deities, history, religious history and so forth. Among these, one that is very important for all who wish to learn and meditate on the path-of the practical aspect of Buddhism in general and that of Vajrayana in particular is the Leg shey gyu de chi nam par shagpa kelsang gi yi trod (Legs bshad rgyud sde spyi’i rnam par bzhag pa skal bzang gi yid ‘phrod). In this book, he has explained precisely how the four tantras differ from one another. He has also fully described the stages of the two spontaneous path practices of the Vajrayana tradition, dealing with the ‘six ultimates’ and the ‘four modes of transmission’, thus interpreting without mistake the intention of Adhi-Buddha Vajradhara.

May the reprint of this text, which the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives is publishing herewith, bring peace and happiness in this world!

Another interesting and great insight of Dulzin Drakpa Gyaltsen’s line of incarnation and lineages ,who is none other than Manjushri .That was how Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen came to make the promise to arise as an uncommon Dharma Protector. He would go on to fulfil his promise in another lifetime and arise as Dorje Shugden, the uncommon protector of Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings. For this reason, the central deity in Dorje Shugden’s mandala is known as Duldzin Dorje Shugden. Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen was devoted to Lama Tsongkhapa, firmly believing that the Guru is the root of all good qualities and realisations. Thus, he always sought to delight Lama Tsongkhapa and would follow all his advice and instructions without breaking any commitments.Thank you Rinpoche and Pastor David for this great write up about Duldzin Dorje Shugden .???

What a remarkable account by H.H. Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche about the sacred remains of Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen. It says that:

“The fragrant scent of pure morality spread throughout a large area, confirming what I had heard from Geshe Chodrag while at the monastery.”~ H.H. Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche

There was unmistaken fragrance emanating from the remains, which signified his pure monkhood. It’s an encouragement for us that we should hold our vows and practice Dharma purely, just like what Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen has shown. It’s not a fairytale or to cajole us into practicing Dharma but this is the truth and the unmistaken evidence of it. Not only in Tibetan Buddhist schools, in some of Mahayana texts as well, it is said that for those who has held their vows purely, we could even smell a pleasant fragrance from their body. Here’s one of the examples from a Thais monk: https://bit.ly/2Fw8RHX .

Besides, His Holiness also mentioned that Geshe Chodrag said the same thing. I’m sure there were more to testify this if we were to investigate it further. On top of that, this account is written by His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche Himself, a High Lama in Gelug tradition, a junior tutor to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the account itself is not too distant past although Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen has passed away at 1437.

Thank you Pastor David for this. Here’s another article about Duldzin Drakpa Gyaltsen written by Pastor Jean Ai earlier : https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/becoming-dulzin-drakpa-gyaltsen.html.

Wangze is one of Dorje Shugden’s emanations and is the most powerful deity to propitiate in order to assist us when we are facing difficult situations with difficult people and positive influence on others. H H the Dalai Lama is considered as the incarnation of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, therefore is a highly realized and attained being. Dalai Lama has been worshipping Dorje Shugden for decades, consulted his oracles, and even composed prayers for Dorje Shugden. Until 1966 suddenly, Dalai Lama imposed the ban on Dorje Shugden , saying Dorje Shugden is not good. Many incarnation have been returning again and again. Dorje Shugden’s practice does not send us to the three lower realms. Prayers composed by H.H the 14th Dalai Lama at Dungkar Monastery of Domo Geshe Rinpoche tells all and had proven it. Dalai Lama can not be wrong for some one who has the clairvoyance to see whether Dorje Shugden is good or evil. Even the 5th Dalai Lama composed prayers, and also made a statue of Dorje Shugden.
Reading this over and over as it good to know and understand better. May more people get to read this truth.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.

Since those days in school , I have heard of these Bermuda Triangle. Will get exicted hearing interesting stories of the mysteries of these area. The Bermuda Triangle, also known as the Devil’s Triangle, is a region between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico in the North Atlantic Ocean. Over the past several centuries, more than 50 ships and 20 planes have disappeared in the area. Recording to some researchers that a parallel universe exists in the Bermuda Triangle region, causing a time or space warp that sucks the objects around it into a parallel universe. Interesting. The Bermuda Triangle, known for its mysterious disappearances. In recent years there have been several incidents in the Bermuda Triangle that have captured media attention. Interesting, ships and airplanes that seemed to have disappeared without a trace which has earned it the name ‘Devil’s Triangle. Since then nothing extraordinary has happened in the last 60 years. Some had mentioned that there are large deep ocean craters on the sea floor of the Bermuda Triangle. Could it be possible no one knows but there’s also others theory as well. Scientists still cannot solved these mysteries disappearance, were there the existing of aliens or something else.
Thank you Rinpoche and Cindy Hew for this great sharing.

Visiting Dorje Shugden’s grotto in Kechara Forest Retreat is a must see place . A beautiful hugh statue of Dorje Shugden was installed ,Rinpoche also placed hundreds of Holy mantra stones, around Dorje Shugden grotto, for everyone to do circumambulation around Dorje Shugden. So as visitors could able to do candles offerings as well. We Malaysians are so fortunate to learn about Dorje Shugden if not beacause of Tsem Rinpoche. Dorje Shugden has tremendous power to help us helps us in whatever way we need in our resources and in our spiritual journey. He is an emanation of an enlightened being and that he manifested in a worldly form. As an emanation of Manjushri, Dorje Shugden has the ability to open our minds to universal wisdom. There’s so many benefits when we rely on Dorje Shugden sincerely. A wish-fulfilling Shrine that will help everyone regardless of race and religion.
    Thank you Rinpoche .

Interesting blog .Chinese folklore features a rich variety of ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural creatures. According to traditional beliefs a ghost is the spirit form of a person who has died. Ghosts are typically malevolent and will cause harm to the living if provoked. Many Chinese folk beliefs about ghosts have been adopted into the mythologies. But centuries of physics research have found nothing like this exists, which is why physicists say ghosts can’t exist. And so far, there is no proof that any part of a person can continue on after death. Ghosts or spirits do exist in this world. There’s several myths still widely circulated even there’s a decrease in rituals and rites. Chinese communities all over the world use a variety of methods to protect themselves from ghosts, or whatever. Spirits and ghost are everywhere even day time its only we can’t see. As long as they are not disturbed ,its alright. Doing prayers and dedicated to them is the best choice. In Buddhism when we takes refuge in the Buddha, practises the Dharma and supports the Sangha, we are protected from many different types of spirit. Tibetan Buddhism is one of the most powerful to counter all forms of ghostly and spirit disturbances.
Thank you Rinpoche for this interesting blog.

It was H E Kyabje Gangchen Rinpoche that first recognised our Guru Kyabje Tsem Rinpoche as a tulku back in 1987. Lama Gangchen Tulku Rinpoche was an important Tibetan Italian lama of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. He was the last generation of lamas from the ‘old Tibet’. At a young age he was recognised as the reincarnation of the lama healer Kachen Sapen. He was a direct disciple of the greatest lamas of the Gelugpa school of the twentieth century, such as Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang, Kyabje Zong Rinpoche, who taught him Tibetan medicine, healing methods and astrology. He worked tirelessly as a spiritual teacher and healer. He travelled tremendously throughout India, Nepal, Sikkim, Europe and finally settled in Italy. Lama Gangchen has travelled extensively ,providing healing and gave teachings worldwide. He has also led many pilgrimages to some of the most important holy places of different religious and spiritual denominations in the world. He founded numerous centres all over the world. Kyabje Gangchen Rinpoche has worked tirelessly for many decades to promote world peace and had received many awards and recognitions for his work. Lama Gangchen will remain in the hearts of all those who met him as a teacher of great love and profound wisdom.
Years back our Guru Kyabje Tsem Rinpoche did sent students to Kyabje Gangchen Rinpoche ’s centre in Albagnano, Italy with many offerings and updating projects of Kechara as well.

nteresting read of how a common nomad boy became an Oracle Lama. Reading the biography of a selfless Dorje Shugden Oracle Lama again had me understand more. Venerable Choyang Kuten Lama became a renowned oracle, who had contributed greatly in Tibet’s history. Choyang Kuten Lama was a respected oracle for a manifestation of enlightened Dharma Protectors Dorje Shugden, and was told he would be very beneficial to beings in the future. During the Chinese invasion he remained in Tibet although the situation was tense, helping countless people escape safely to India. As the situation worsened in Tibet in 1959 Kuten Lama escaped life not only as an oracle, but also contributing in various ways. Giving the Tibetan community lengthy advice and even Dharma teachings. He also served his countrymen in difficult times in Tibet and in refugee camps in India regardless of the tradition or school of Tibetan Buddhism. He raised funds for monks’ quarters in many monasteries including Gaden, Drepung as well as other Nyingma and Sakya monasteries.

He is much revered for his contributions to Buddhist learning and for his reforms of Mongolian Buddhism. He was best known for his intricate and elegant Buddhist sculptures. Viewed as one of Mongolia’s most prominent historical figures, celebrated for propagating Tibetan Buddhism throughout Mongolia to this day.

Due to the Dorje Shugden controversy many practitioners are still oppressed due to their choice of religion. Yet there are complaisant, and obliging people too who barely understand the situation, poorly informed of the issue and behave in a way they knew what’s going on regarding the ban on Dorje Shugden. There are many good bits of wisdom and worthy words in this article. Well-intentioned people make mistakes, lots of them. Mistakes must be expected and being held accountable for. Oppression will still exist no matter how compassionate sharing with others. If we are willing to risk making mistakes we can still do something. We must constantly try to find out ways to use our privilege to push forward the voice of the oppressed. Do not allow ourselves to be immobilized by lack of knowledge.
Thank you Rinpoche and Sarah for this sharing.

The Unknown

The Known and unknown are both feared,
Known is being comfortable and stagnant,
The unknown may be growth and opportunities,
One shall never know if one fears the unknown more than the known.
Who says the unknown would be worse than the known?
But then again, the unknown is sometimes worse than the known. In the end nothing is known unless we endeavour,
So go pursue all the way with the unknown,
because all unknown with familiarity becomes the known.
~Tsem Rinpoche

Find one of the most beautiful temples in the world in Nara, Japan. It is the 1,267 year old Todai-ji temple that houses a 15 meter Buddha Vairocana statue who is a cosmic and timeless Buddha. Emperor Shomu who sponsored this beautiful temple eventually abdicated and ordained as a Buddhist monk. Very interesting history and story. One of the places everyone should visit- https://bit.ly/2VgsHhK

What the meat industry figured out is that you don't need healthy animals to make a profit.
Sick animals are more profitable... farms calculate how close to death they can keep animals without killing them. That's the business model. How quickly they can be made to grow, how tightly they can be packed, how much or how little can they eat, how sick they can get without dying... We live in a world in which it's conventional to treat an animal like a block of wood. ~ Jonathan Safran Foer
