Our goal
Kindness is the way to clarity. Clarity leads to calmness. Calmness opens the
door to wisdom. Wisdom transforms our habits. Our habits transform into eventual attainments. Attainments allow us freedom. Freedom allows us freedom for others.
That is the goal of the sacred Buddha who has no rival in all of existence.
That is the goal of us Buddhists. That is your goal. That is our goal. That is
the only goal.

Thank you Rinpoche for this teachings.
Ultimate objective of practising Buddhism is for us to gain freedom (enlightenment ) . Buddha has laid the guides and methods for us to progress in this spiritual path. However, it will not be material if we only know the theory but do not practise it. We should therefore transform our mind and change our actions via body, speech and mind in order to achieve ultimate freedom.
What an amazing awesome truth about life and everything in just two sentences! I cannot expressed how lucky, grateful I am feeling everyday to be so fortunate and lucky to be able to come across Rinpoche and hence Dharma teachings. The truth is all that freedom we think we have… that so called promise of “happiness” in samsara is all really just lies and while we hold on to it, chase after it, and even finally getting it, we are still not happy. Gaining no peace of mind we start the vicious cycle all over again. How tragic we are…
I remembered Rinpoche once quoted and said “we are like thirsty ghosts, drinking salt water and so never quenching our thirst”. When you think about it, it is true, we are never really satisfied with what we’ve got, and we always want more… and this is the suffering of samsara. I hope to leave it completely one day soon!
Simple and clear analogy on gaining ultimate freedom and happiness. Guess it has to start with ourselves and be example to many. When other sees the changes, there are many out there are seeking the same too. Be kind and compassionate towards others.
Kindness is the goal of every Buddhist. Through kindness we see things with open heart without our conception. We do not judge hence we see things clearly. When we know about the truth and understand why, we will calm down and think of a good solution that’s when wisdom comes. Wisdom bring us attainment. Happiness comes from freedom.
Calmness leads to clear logic and overcome delusional thoughts and harm. It averts anger and attachment and overcomes negative actions as wisdom arises.
Kindness is the expression of wisdom.Kindness is what touches people ultimately. If we can touch people’s heart, we win them over body and soul.
Control through violence and anger is only temporary. When people get enough of it, they will rebel and reject.
Kindness transforms people because we show them the example and result that every one wishes for.
Rinpoche said to me once, personally, “When you’re old, wouldn’t you like to be one of those beautiful old women practitioners, who engage in retreat and who people flock to, to come for blessings and advice.” Well of course I do. There couldn’t be a nicer thing to look forward to as we grow into a time of our lives that is often regarded as merely a time for retiring from the world.
This has been a helpful anchor – when I’m feeling moody, jumping up and down in a rage or feeling tired, I think of the old woman I’d like to be when I grow old – the goal. And that tiny Jiminy Cricket voice in my head reminds me, “You don’t just become that kind old woman if you’re an angry young bitch now.” That helps. It calms me down in a moment.
Just as this quote from Rinpoche says, it all starts from a moment of kindness, which then leads to clarity and everything else. If I’m going to be that kind old lady 30 years from now, I better start being her now.
Have just read this beautiful verse from Rinpoche again and am reminded of the Dalai Lama’s words, when he said that “my religion is kindness”. A few weeks ago Rinpoche gave a wonderful teaching which explained that we may well have many weaknesses and negative qualities, but we do also have strengths and positive qualities. If we just focused on ONE good quality and made that grow, that would cause other positive qualities to develop alongside it; it would also eventually counter and even eliminate our negative qualities. All it starts with is ONE good thought, ONE positive quality.
So we take that one single quality of kindness, that is spoken about here, then it would cause a plethora of other goodies to manifest, for in being truly kind, we have to also be patient, understanding, giving, tolerant, never give up, focused etc etc So that one quality of kindness, when truly practiced, opens to everything else.
Actually that makes a lot sense. Most of the time we quietly focus on the negative qualities of others and therefore develop a habit of always focussing on flaws, even ours and over time we become withdrawn. Whatever we focus on and nurture, no matter how small, will eventually grow. You cannot develop kindness without also developing wisdom, patience and forgiveness along the way.
非常喜欢这意义深长的语录。
我个人认为,凡事一切以善为动机及出发,在往目标前进的过程中没有五毒的污染,那肯定是成功了一半。
Very beautiful quote. All these attributes we want to cultivate depend on one another, and with more wisdom and clarity we can even be much much more compassionate in an effective manner! These reinforce one another.
Thank you Rinpoche, this is so profound. It will serve as guidelines and reminder for my practice. thank you.
A simple yet profound formula to achieving the ultimate goal. Thank you Rinpoche for giving us the equation and showing us the methods to the solution.
So simple, clear and meaningful. If half the human race can follow this path, the world will be a much better place. If all can do it, then everything will be perfect! Om Mani Peme Hung…….
Thank You Rinpoche for this simple and straight forward quote, it really the sums up everything that Lord Buddha teaches us, and the goal we are to achieve. This is simple to understand and yet the message in the meaning very profound for everyone.
Thank you Rinpoche. It is a great motivation to me.
I like this verse, it sums up the purpose of life, of Buddhists and of all true spiritualists. Who doesn’t want to have kindness, clarity and insight? This is indeed a lovely quote. Thank you rinpoche
Yes Rinpoche, the path to freedom begin with the single step of kindness. Being kind works in a very strange way from my experience. It expand your heart and free the thoughts from selfishness and in turn we achieve a moment of bliss. Being mean is self imprisonment as it narrow our thought to focus on just ourselves. Once the heart expanded by being kind, many paths that was once obscure will slowly open up and there could be endless opportunities of goodness waiting to happen. Thanks again for the short but effective teaching.
Still working to perfect on the first step. :p
I know you can do it! Way to go, Andrew.
We love wisdom. We love to know the way to get wisdom.
Yes, so simple but yet I cannot reach this goal. My obsatcles: my ego, my arrogance, my unacceptance of what I perceived wrong, my righteousness. Wow the list can go on and on, however, with this profound teaching from Rinpoche, I have acquired some level of awareness and from here with discipline and self control, may I achieve my goal of freedom from my self imprisonment.
Thank you, kind Guru
Very practical ways to achieve the goal of the sacred Buddha,i must always keep this in mind all the time.
Personally i like this very much “Kindness is the way to clarity. Clarity leads to calmness. Calmness opens the door to wisdom. Wisdom transforms our habits. ”
Kindness is the best gift for ourselves and others. We feel good if we don’t hang on any anger and we forgive. Then we practice to have a stable mind that makes us stay calm no matter anything happens. When we stay calm, we are not distracted by delusions or any other negative thoughts that based on emotions.
Thanks Karen for explaining it to me. My small and polluted mind cannot fathom the profound meaning in the only goal worthwhile to pursue for all of us.
Dear Rinpoche,
I will internalize this! So simple yet profound. Kindness=>Clarity=>Calmness=>Wisdom=>Transformed Habits=>Attainments> Our Freedom=> Freedom for Others = Our Goals.
To start with, be kind always!
With folded hands!
Thanks Rinpoche for the simple yet very meaningful and important goal-achieving steps for us.
I like this QUOTE VERY MUCH, a good reminder of reaching goal, the only goal
What a beautiful quote! Thank you, Rinpoche!
