The Key
Do you have a habit that is hard to kick?
Are you addicted to something unhealthy?
Do you make others suffer because of it?
Do you hide it and avoid apologizing for the pain you’ve caused?
Do you deny, but continue your addiction?
Do you hurt others, yourself and your potential?
Choices are continue as you are because this life is for abusing. Or get serious help and continuously so that you stop abusing.
You owe so much to others whether you like it or not. How many have been so kind to you? How many have you’ve been genuinely kind to?
Change never happens overnight. Bad habits do not happen overnight either. Both takes effort. Effort is the same.
So applying the effort to the right direction consistently is the key. Use this key to unlock the pain and get freedom now!

What Tsem Rinpoche has quoted here is actually opens the mind. Our mental control our behaviour and the regular practice automatically becomes a habits. And most people adopt their habits, they focus on the behaviour by routine. This process can be for good, bad or misconduct. It might not be fast and isn’t always easy. Most importantly it needs a lot of time and effort.
The good habits usually generate for the own beneficial but for the bad habits it’s to harm one. Here is where karma is generated for misconduct and merit goes for the good intention or deeds. A powerful message is delivered but most are not aware of this process.
Nothing too late to practise for the benefit of being good and to have life full of happiness and peaceful. These message was clear but it makes the key unique and easy to understand, it’s makes one aware and responsible for their behaviours and habits.
I believe that bad habits form over time, hence, if we want to stop these bad habits it will also need time. Definitely when we cut down on doing these habits of ours we will feel a little lost or even be angry because we are being stopped from doing something that is so familiar to us. But, I believe that if we change all our bad habits, we will be a better person. Hence, we will be able to accept greater things in life.
I like going through Rinpoche’s old posts to find hidden gems.. This is one of it.. so profound and makes us wake up.
Any sort of addiction isn’t good. Addiction is just another attachment that keeps us here is Samsara..
Thank you for the teaching, Rinpoche. This is good to contemplate on daily.
We, in pursuit of a life of spirituality need serious help; i.e to create a method on how to control the undisiplined mind in order to lead ourselves away from suffering to happiness. If we can develope a correct understanding of our mind’s characteristic nature, control is said to follow naturally. Then we will be able to release our emotional ignorance more easier and eliminate the sufferings we caused to others and ourselves too. Of course “change never happens overnight, so is bad habit either. Both takes effort.Effort is the same,” so said our Guru. That is why it is important that we must investigate our mind and apply the correct effort in the right direction consistently, and find the right key to unlock the pain and get freedom now!
Dear Rinponche.
I have been reading alot of your writings here in your blog and indeed your words have been like the only friend i have left in my shamefull life. I have no courage to tell even to a close friend of mine who was the one who inroduced your blog to me and have spoken alot about you and the teachings to me. I am a christian by root but my faith towards it doesn’t give me any sense of peace and serenity. It’s too realistic and it’s all nothing but history. Weird but it doesn’t get me. The thing that i am now stuck in is a habit that i have tried so hard to get off from. Drugs.
I wouldn’t want to talk this further here..but i just needed to leave a note of “thank you” for this little light of hope that ur words started to light up a spark which was something that my soul longs to hear or read ..i pray that it will continue to spark up..hoping that it’ll turn into a fire of enlightenment of strenght.
Thank you again.
Love,

What Rinpoche has quoted is right. Every inch of the bad quotes are so easy to follow. But hard to get rid of. The opposite of these quotes are so hard to absorb and practice. I would think the key to rid of these bad habituations that Rinpoche has mentioned you need to make an effort and will power. Effort also is one of the six paramittas. It can help you and that will be the key to the transformation and development of oneself. Yes it very hard to practice virtuous habits. Sometimes I wonder why is our human mind and body has to have negative habits covering our good qualities.
Effort is like creating the cause or to take the action to get the results that we want to receive. Effort also requires time to invest in or make some sacrifices to. It involves giving up something in the meantime to achieve the results we want in the near future. How true are the teachings in the Lamrin!
The Lamrin promises certain results if we take certain actions in the right direction with the right motivation.
I was a skeptic initially but over time and effort, I can see how dharma teachings can be used in our daily lives to enrich us.
We are so fortunate here in Kechara to have all the 13 departments and supportive environment to help nurture us as we learn and practice dharma due to the kindness of our Lama, HE Tsem Rinpoche.
If we do it consistently, we will somehow get the results that we want.
The thing with bad habits is that the longer you take to break it, the harder it becomes. At the end we require a humongous effort which not many of us will have.
May I take a quote from the 27 verses “if shadows of negativity are not dispelled immediately, these strange insubstantial absences of light gain immense potency with every new action, until even those who understand the dangers of negation will not have enough power to choose the way of Clear light. ”
It’s a joke that we think we can break the bad habit “later” when we can’t do it now. It’s a joke that we think we can break the bad habit 10 years down the road, after a reinforcement of that bad habit for another 10 years. It’s a bigger joke to think we can break the bad habit in our future lives after reinforcing it for another lifetime. If not now when ? perhaps never ? It’s a scary thought.
Dear Rinpoche, Is smoking consider addiction to something unhealthy? If so, is it wise to get Kecharian to give up smoking for the betterment of the health.
Yes it is unhealthy..wonderful to not smoke.
