Taming the Shrew– A Charity Night
Do your bit for charity AND have a great night out at the theatre with this season’s hottest, most colourful musical, Taming of the Shrew: A Bollywood Cabaret!
A special charity night, in aid of Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK), will be organised on July 3, and go towards supporting their impressive work of feeding the homeless. Proceeds will also contribute towards their setting up of a permanent building, where they’ll be able to provide food, shelter and aid to the homeless every day.
Established in 2006, KSK is a registered NGO whose volunteers go out every weekend, bringing vegetarian hot food and dry food to over 850 hungry men, women and children on the streets, regardless of race, culture or creed.
Its objective is to help the homeless get off the streets – through finding shelter homes or jobs that will bring dignity back to their shattered lives. To achieve this, KSK creates relationships with each individual, to find out the causes of each circumstance and his or her needs.
KSK has recently acquired a permanent building where the homeless can be given hot food daily, medical aid, job placement, etc. In the long term, KSK aims to reduce the flow of homeless living on the streets by providing a NURTURE CENTRE as a place of training and assistance to help make the homeless employable and for them to re-enter society.
Starring one of Malaysia’s most celebrated female comedians and personalities, Joanne Kam, there’s no doubt this production will be larger than life and a laugh a minute. You can be sure it’ll come with all of the ingredients for a smashing Bollywood production – a hero, a heroine, a long-suffering mother, and all the music, glitter and spice of glamourous India.
Join the pizzazz and colour of this hilarious musical and contribute to a fantastic cause at the same time. Tickets are selling out fast so grab yours now!

KSK ism coming up with another fund raising event. This time it is not a dinner function but a Comedy Show in Bollywood Cabaret style called TAMING OF THE SHREW. This event is held jointly by KSK and P.J. Live Arts Theatre. Although the name Bollywood Cabaret may sound Indian. The performers are all Malaysian Artists performing in Malaysian style. The performers comprise of celebrated personality Joanne Kam Poh Poh. This Charity Night was to raise funds for the renovation of KSK new building at Jalan Imbi, Kuala Lumpur. The place of the show was at PJ Live Art Jaya One. It was shown on 3rd July, 2010. Looks like KSK is the most active department in Kechara Organisation.
I caught the show last Saturday night – it was in aid of Kechara Soup Kitchen’s charity project. Joanne Kam did a wonderful job bringing on the show with an entire cast of talented personalities (and even more talented production team to back them up)! The one who stole the show in my book, was Vincent Chong with his commanding on-stage presence, versatility and vocal range. It is very unfortunate though that the sound system failed to do the performances any justice. That aside – compliments goes out to Pat Ibrahim for choreography, Reza Zainal Abidin for his directorial vision, Sunny + Joanne Kam for the fabulous costumes and Gavin Yap for spicing up Shakespeare’s original script! Thank you for a most enjoyable night!
After the performance, I took time to catch up with some old friends who were in the show… they were very thrilled that so many Kecharians came out to support the charity night. Joanne in particular was very happy but, a tad disappointed that Rinpoche could not make it as she was looking forward to seeing Rinpoche again. She mentioned that one of Vincent’s stage-persona was especially created with Rinpoche in mind, as she was sure Rinpoche would love watching that character in action! Also not forgetting… the song, “Enough is enough” was included in the show for Rinpoche too. Joanne mentioned that it was one of Rinpoche’s favourite songs.
This is a must watch musical comedy. It is vulgar, funny, hilarious, entertaining and mixture of Bollywood dance. It is definitely not suitable for children.
I loved the costumes and the mixture of modern music entwined with witty dialogue. Vince Chong had versatile voice. Joanne Kam, as Katharina was hilarious as ever with her dry wit. Aanantha, as Pertuchio looked every bit regal in his “prince” costume. Hortensio paraded his muscles on the stage shouting “I love you”. Everyone in the audience loved the cabaret.
Thank you KSK for bringing this wonderful comedy for us. What an excellent idea to promote a virtuous cause.
I attended this charity show for KSK. It was hilarious and fun-filled. KSK’s president Ruby Khong was a great host. She spoke to everyone and with such sincerity to each person.
The sound system was below average I must say but nonetheless it did not dampen the spirit of why everyone was there – in support of KSK’s cause of feeding the homeless and getting them off the streets. People were chatting among themselves and the ambience was warm and friendly. Of course, we Kecharians as usual had a good time being together.
In today’s society where we are SO busy, we often forget to focus out on matters other than ourselves. So, it is very spiritual that because of KSK people gather together for the same purpose of charity, even if it’s for a few hours.
KSK keep up the great work!
I went for the charity showing in aid of Kechara Soup Kitchen last Satruday and it was pretty good. The best moment was Lady Gaga’s song with the dancing and singing trees (you have to be there to know what i mean). Vince Chong was excellent and Joanne Kam was pretty good as Kate too. Joanne is actually an old friend and student of Rinpoche’s and it is great to see her supporting Kechara through her talent. I think that is the most important thing – to be loyal and to keep supporting our friends through whatever skills and methods that we can.
Just caught this show last night. Its a lot of fun. I was most impressed with the dancers in the play they were very animated and move beautifully on stage. The jokes are pretty contemporary, though at times the words were muffled. The bollywood theme shone through the costumes and via the dance sequences. They even managed to slip one of Lady Gaga’s song into one of their scenes. The backdrop was very nicely done. One can still catch them this Tuesday at PJLA.
Yesterday’s show was in support of Kechara Soup Kitchen, rain or shine KSK volunteers go out to the streets of KL to give food to the unfortunate people in KL. Do join them to meet those who have been invisible to us so far.
More and more individuals, corporations, media have been in support of KSK’s initiatives. It is wonderful to see the Performing Arts group joining. For those of you who have been to Joanne Kam’s show will certainly agree with Rinpoche that the show will be larger than life! Joanne is a great supporter of charitable works and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank her.
Many have joined in to support KSK and together, KSK is able to reach out more and help more people. Just join in one of the rounds with KSK out in the streets and you’ll know why more and more people are supporting KSK. Does KSK have enough help already? No! The more support and help KSK gets, the more KSK is able to reach out.
