Hambo Lama Itygelov’s body after 75 years
This is rare archive footage of Lama Itigilov being exhumed 75 years after he died. When they opened the box, they could smell divine fragrances. A strong aroma of juniper. His head was clearly outlined. The skin on his head was normal. Lama Itigilov was famous for his charity work in World War I. The State recognised Lama Itigilov’s efforts with multiple awards.
On June 15, 1927, Lama Itigilov went into a deep trance, chanting hymns until he simply stopped.
Rada Zhalsaraeva, a historian, said: “He consciously immersed himself into a state where all the processes of the body run at a tremendously slow pace. For us 75 years have passed, while for him it may only seem like seventy five minutes, or even less.”
Lama Itigilov was still in a meditative pose when his body was uncovered. Buddhist monks took Lama Itigilov to Ivongolsky Datsan (temple) where they watch over him to this day.
Local residents are not allowed to look at him except for eight special days of worship each year. Tourists are not allowed to the Datsan (temple) either.
Scientist are puzzled by Lama Itigilov’s preservation. Doctor Alexey Azheyev said: “There is no vacuum there, so the body is supposed to decay. But the immune system somehow maintains the balance. I check the body less frequent now. There are no changes whatsoever.”
A biological examination of Lama Itigilov showed that his hair and nails have lifelike characteristics.
After these discoveries, science found itself at a dead end. Professor Leonid Yangutov said, “Everything suggested that Itigilov is a living person. To understand this phenomenon, an autopsy is required but we can’t because the body is sacred.”
In January 2005, the head of Russia’s Buddhists banned any medical research on Lama Itigilov’s body.

Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing the incredible video with us. This is another evidence of how Dharma can help us when we pass away and the effectiveness of practice Dharma wholeheartedly. It is amazing that the scalp of Lama Itigilov looks exactly like the scalp of a living person after his death 75years ago.
The monk who participated the exhume process told us in the video that he smell fragrances emitted from the box that contained the body. This is amazing because normal human body will emit foul odour within days after death especially when the decomposition process kicks in.
This means that Lama Itigilov has very pure Vinaya and hence there is fragrance emitted from his body when he passes away. This what happened to many high lamas. In some cases, their hair and nails kept growing even after their death. The body of Lama Tsongkhapa has been witnessed to perform these miracles.
What an attained Lama! Still sitting in mediation posture and his body being warm and soft. He perspires but doesn’t lose weight for so long. Thank you very much Rinpoche and blog team for sharing this very interesting article and video clip ???
It is so amazing to learn of a lifelike Buddhist master, Hambo Lama Itygelov, after 75 years since the time he simply “stop living.” Even science found itself at a dead end because all results pointed towards Lama Itigilov as a living person which is impossible by our current knowledge. This goes to show that unexplained phenomena are usually capped by our limited knowledge and wisdom. Thank you for this sharing.
The mystery of Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov, a mummy whose body defies time has amazed the world. Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov was a Buryat Buddhist lama of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. According to his last will and testament he requested to be buried as he was at the time of his death, sitting in lotus posture Only that he asked to be exhumed after 30 years Later. His body was exhumed and examined by Buddhist monks, discovered surprisingly that there is no signs of decay of his body after so many years. Interesting read.
Thank you Rinpoche this sharing.
