Powerful and Short Praise to Avalokitesvara (Chenrezig)

This is the famous praise to Avalokitesvara (Chenrezig) written by the realised Nun Palmo who attained Buddhahood and cured herself of leprosy through her austere practices based on Avalokitesvara and Nyung Nay (fasting retreat). This prayer is filled with great blessings. Below that is the long dharani (mantra) of Avalokitesvara which is good to do. Basically there are four things that happens for a person who practises this mantra constantly:
- At time of death, one will behold the Buddhas
- One will not take rebirth into three lower realms
- Prevent accidental death or premature death
- After death, will be reborn in Amitabha’s pureland

NAMO MAN-JU-SHRI-YE NAMO SU-SHRI-YE NAMO UT-TA-MA SHRI-YE SOHA
OM JIG TEN GON PO LA CHAG TSAL LO
I bow to the Protector of the world.
JIG TEN LA MA SRID PA SUM GYI TO PA PO
Everyone in the three world praises and celebrate the Lama.
LHA YI TSO WO DUD DANG TSHANG PAY TOD PA PO
Even the gods and Brahma celebrate and praise Lord Chenrezig
THUB PAY GYAL CHOG TOD PAY DRUB PAR DZAD PA PO
One who wishes to attain buddhahood praises the lord who delivers such accomplisment.
JIG TEN SUM GYI GON PO CHOG LA CHAG TSAL LO
I bow to the supreme protector of the three world.
DE SHEG PAG ME KU TE KU ZANG DZIN PA PO
Holder of a noble form body, filled with infinite tathagathas,
DE SHEG NANG WA THA YE U GYAN DZIN PA PO
You are crowned by Buddha Amitabha.
CHAG YE CHOG JIN YI DOG TRE KOM SEL WA PO
Your supremely bountiful right hand dispels the suffering of pretas;
CHAG YON SER GYI PAD MAY NAM PAR GYAN PA PO
Your left hand hold a golden lotus.
DRI ZHIM RAL PAY THRENG WA MAR SER KHYUG PA PO
Your sweetly scented red and yellow hair sparkles like necklaces.
ZHAL RAY GYE PA DA WA TA BUR DZE PA PO
The expanse of your face is lovely as full moon.
CHEN GYI PAD MA CHOG TU ZANG ZHING YANG PA PO
Like the sublimely supreme lotus, your eyes are beautifully wide.
KHA WA DUNG TAR NAM KAR DRI NGAD DAN PA PO
Your sweet-smelling form is like a snow-white conch shell.
DRI MED OD CHAG MU TIG TSHOM BU DZIN PA PO
You hold a mala of stainless, glowing pearls,
DZE PAY OD ZER KYA RENG MAR PO GYAN PA PO
And radiate stunning beams of light, red as dawn.
PAD MAY TSHO TAR CHAG NI NGAR WA JE PA PO
Your body is like a lake; from it, hands, like lotuses are perfectly arranged.
TON KAY TRIN GYI DOG DANG DEN ZHING ZHON PA PO
They are youthful and like autumn clouds, white and bright and clear.
RIN CHEN MANG PO PUNG PA NYI NI GYAN PA PO
Both shoulders are adorned with many precious jewels.
LO MAY CHOG TAR CHAG THIL ZHON ZHING JAM PA PO
Your youthful palms are soft like the most supreme leaves.
RI DOG PAG PAY NU MA YON PA KAB PA PO
Your left breast is covered with a tenasera skin.
NYEN CHA DU BU GEG CHING GYAN NAM CHANG WA PO
Precious earrings and other ornaments gracefully adorn you.
DRI MA MED PAY PAD MAY CHOG LA NAY PA PO
You dwell up on a supreme and unblemished lotus.
TE WAY NGO NI PAD MAY DAB TAR JAM PA PO
Your navel’s surface is as soft as lotus petal.
SER GYI KA RAG CHOG LA NOR BU TRE PA PO
Your belt is of the finest jewel-encrusted gold.
TA ZUR TRI PAY RE ZANG SHAM THAB DZIN PA PO
Your lower robe wraps your hips in the noblest cloth.
THUB PAY KHYEN CHOG TSHO CHEN PHA ROL CHIN PA PO
Gone to the other shore of the great ocean, you have supreme knowledge and capability.
CHOG NYE SOD NAM MANG PO NYE WAR SAG PA PO
You, who properly gathered so much virtue, received the supreme state of being.
TAG TU DE WAY JUNG NE GA NAD SEL WA PO
Dispeller of the misery of old age and illness, you are the permanent source of joy.
SUM THAR DZAD CHING KHA CHOD CHOD PA TON PA PO
You act to liberate beings from the three lower realms, and show and perform equally for space dwellers.
LU CHEN CHOG TE DUD PUNG THRUG LAY GYAL WA PO
Supreme among beings, you are victorious in battle over hosts of demons.
SER GYI KANG DUB DRA YI ZHAB YID ONG WA PO
Your feet tinkle with the pleasing sound of golden anklets;
TSHANG PAY NAY PA ZHI YI WEN PAR DZAD PA PO
And you create the four silences, which are the cause of Brahmahood.
NGANG PAY DRO DRA LANG CHEN DREG TAR SHEG PA PO
You walk with the grace of a swan and the dignity of an elephant.
TSHOG KUN NYE WAR SAG SHING TEN PA NYER WA PO
Provider of the doctrine, who has completely and properly accumulated,
O MAY TSHO DANG CHU YI TSHO LAY DROL WA PO
You liberate from the ocean of milk and the ocean of water.
GANG ZHIG TAG TU THO RANG LANG NAY GU PA YI
Whoever will rise with respect at dawn,
CHEN RE ZIG KYI WANG PO YID LA SEM JED CHING
Thinking in their mind of powerful Chenrezig,
TOD PAY CHOG DI DAG CHING SAL WAR TOD JED NA
To purely and clearly extol this supreme praise,
DE NI KYE PA AM NI BUD MED YIN KYANG RUNG
Whatever they are male or female,
JIG TEN DI AM MA ONG KYE WA THAM CHAD DU
In this life and all future lives,
JIG TEN JIG TEN LAY DE GO PA KUN DRUB SHOG
In this world and the world beyond, all their purposes will be accomplished.

Avalokiteshvara has many different manifestations. One of them is known as Chenrezig Gyalwa Gyatso. In this form, his practice belongs to the Highest Yoga Tantra classification through which one can gain enlightenment in a single lifetime. Avalokitesvara (Chenrezig) has so many mantras and dharanis attach to him/her. All of them bring benefit. Through Chenrezig’s great compassion for us in the Saha world we are helped so much by him. Through the kindess of our gurus and their skillful means we can encounter such practices like Nyung Nay, purify our karma and get real results from practices. Buddhas are kind, and the Guru’s are even kinder. 🙂
I first learned of the story Bhikshuni Lakshmi (Nun Palmo) from reading The Magical Play, the autobiography of Kyabje Trijang Dorje Chang. Hers was a unique and magical story. To be able to receive, learn and recite this praise to Avalokitesvara who liberates from the three lower realms is a blessing containing an ocean of blessings.
