Shocking: Look what happened in Los Angeles!
Dear friends,
From the age of 15 to around 22 or 23 I used to live in Los Angeles (L.A.). I arrived there alone from New Jersey and had to work many jobs to sustain myself. That was back in the 80’s. Los Angeles was a big scary city for a young kid like me and I was totally on my own. Struggling to make enough money even though I worked three part-time jobs was extremely difficult to say the least. I had huge fits of paranoia about losing my job and becoming homeless. I know what it is like to be homeless as I had hitchhiked to Los Angeles from New Jersey. I barely scraped by to buy enough food. That was then.
I was sent this video of downtown Los Angeles and I cannot believe how much it has changed. The amount of poverty and homelessness is much more than I can ever remember from when I was living there. This contrasts so much with the glittery movie industry of Hollywood and the palatial houses of Beverly Hills.
Skid Row is a sprawling tent city in the heart of downtown Los Angeles where you will find thousands of people sleeping on the streets, suffering from many different types of diseases, with no toilets, no food and no clean water. The sanitation there is nearly non-existent and that is shocking. Dena Takruri from AJ+ goes to ground zero of L.A.’s homelessness crisis to show the dire and shocking conditions residents live under and what they endure. I just cannot believe this is America and in one of the most famous cities in the world. America is really not doing well and it will not recover anytime soon. Surveys show that one in every four children live below the poverty line in the United States. What you see on the outside sure isn’t what it is on the inside.
Please take a look at the eight minute video for educational purposes. Not only will you feel compassion for all these people but you will feel grateful for what you yourself have.
Sincerely,
Tsem Rinpoche

Shocking to see the number of homeless people across Los Angeles County. Skid Row, is an area of Downtown Los Angeles could not believe after watching the video, there are so many homeless people in thousands every corner on both sides of the streets . Sad to look at their living conditions , no proper hygiene , and so forth. Skid row areas are frequented by individuals by poverty or through drug addiction. It seem that Skid Row contains one of the largest stable populations of homeless people in the United States. Many homeless suffer from mental illness, stress disorder and other deadly diseases as well. The homeless population is increasing every day , they are struggling to stay alive. Women are living in fear of sexual and physical violence. Hope the authority could do more to help and relocate them. The Charlie incident has indeed brought attention to the nation. It’s a major homeless crisis. Dena Takruri did a good job highlighted the situation of the homeless.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing with us this video about the increasing rate of homeless in Los Angeles which is believed to be glamorous land. Who knew that the City of Angels will have such a high rate of homeless people. It certainly does not match with the sparkly image that the city has.
In the video, a lady was being interviewed for her experience when she was homeless and living in an area that is known to be concentrated with homeless people. She raised a good point that the city is not doing enough for the homeless people. There are not enough public toilets to cater to the growing amount of people who are living on the street.
She also raised awareness about how the homeless are not being treated respectfully as a human being just because they are in a misfortuned place. If the people are willing to understand what the homeless are going through and why they end up there, they would have more compassion for them and will be more considerate when dealing with them. They are human beings after all. People should treat one and another with kindness regardless of any conditions because we never know what is the other person is going through.
