Tyurgen Kam Performs Throat Singing at the Casting of “Ukraine’s Got Talent-6” in Donetsk
Prior to gaining attention with his performance in Ukraine’s Got Talent contest, Tyurgen Kam had appeared on Russia Today, in a tv documentary “Shamans of Siberia”. With four albums under his belt, “Ahoi”, “Bear Path”, “Europe – Asia” and “Dreams of the Buddha“, Tyurgen won the Judges of the contest over with his rendition of the ancient art of Mongolian throat singing. As a practicing Shaman from Chelyabinsk, Russia, Tyurgen has a love for using ancient arts and instruments, such as Mongolian throat singing, Jew’s harp, Morin Khuur in his performances, which mixes the primal sounds of nature with modern music. Tyurgen is still actively producing new songs and performing on stage. Sometimes he would travel overseas, such as Thailand, to perform his unique music to a crowd of enthusiasts.
Mongolian Throat Singer Playing Morin Khuur
The ancient art of Mongolian throat singing has its roots in the nomadic shepherding culture of the grassland plains. The performer creates the layered distinctive sound by producing a primary pitch and layering it with one or more pitches over that. The layering sound had been akin to that of a didgeridoo, an Australian Aborigine wind instrument. Other than the individual talent, Mongolian throat singers relied on the location to enhance further the quality of the sounds, which carry far in the open plains of Mongolia. Serious singers had been known to search far and wide for the right plains, rivers or mountainsides to create the best conditions for throat singing.
Jew’s harp is also known by many names such as Guimbarde, Ozark harp, mouth harp, jaw harp or juice harp. It is classified as an idioglot and comes under the family of lamellophones. Jew’s harp consists of a frame with a flexible bamboo or metal tongue or reed. The tongue or reed is placed in the mouth, and the performer will pluck it with the finger to make a note. Each harp makes a single pitch and several overtones. Different sizes will make different pitches, and there is no standard pitch to be based upon. Lamellophones had been in use since ancient times across many countries, such as Cambodia, India, Austria, Mongolia, Turkey, and Turkic countries.

Now I know the way of lama chanting or singing is so called throat singing! How wonderful to know it is an ancient arts, it feels mystery and comes with some kind of healing energy every time when I listen to it.
Because it comes from ancient time, the way they perform are close with nature. I like the ideas of the throat singers relied on locations like open plains to have quality sounds. Hope to see them to sing along right plains, rivers or mountainsides.

This is so interesting, didn’t know anything about throat singing until i read this article. The singers are so talented. Layering the sound and have different pitches at the same time. Must not be easy to learn this type of singing and hope this type of singing will be maintained and not lost in time to come.
Beautiful voices and I just love it! If it’s not for this article, I will not have known about this and maybe some of you would like to know a little more about this here https://youtu.be/bY1qYRhqh04
They even performed this as a play and they found happiness in this. Something that connects them with land and sky, which is vast. Just like chanting mantras that resonates through our body. Indescribable feeling. Mongolia is most probably the only country practicing this although there are efforts to make it known to others. Maybe that’s also the reason why Rinpoche shared this as this practice came from Mongolia. Thank you Rinpoche for this.
I really enjoyed these two throat singers on these video clips. I find it quite amusing and laughed??. Really unique voice and very impressive too! ??????Thank you Rinpoche and blog team for sharing this light and entertaining videos!????
Wow….fantastic what a great music by Tyurgen Kam wowing the audiences with his Mongolian throat singing at Ukraine’s Got Talent Season 6. First time coming across this throat singing word in fact. What a way to sing. Tyurgen Kam had impressed the judges with his powerful throat singing. I do enjoyed it too even though I do not understand the behind the it. The ancient art of Mongolian throat singing is a type of singing in which the singer manipulates the resonances created as air travels from the lungs, past the vocal folds, and out of the lips to produce a melody. Throat-singing is a guttural style of singing or chanting, is one of the world’s oldest forms of music and was inscribed under UNESCO. It is been practiced by people in Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, Tuva and Siberia. It seem singers would travel far into the countryside looking for the right river, or go up to the steppes of the mountainside to create the proper environment to practice throat-singing. Listening to the video ,says all about a unique vocalization from three cultures .
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing.
