Shirley MacLaine: ‘I’m Not Interested in Fame at All’
Shirley MacLaine has been one of my favorite actresses. She’s highly intelligent and very outspoken. Very spiritual also. A nice combination. A combination I enjoy encountering. It’s so nice she lives in Arizona. I wonder if it’s Sedona, a very spiritual community. I would love to visit Sedona one day soon. Glad to see she is fine, active and really fine. I would love to send her a Tara statue and introduce her to Tara. Tara would really match her being and match her energy. I hope to have that opportunity one day.

Screen legend Shirley MacLaine continues to be a free spirit and force of nature as she enters her &…or the big questions in life.
Screen legend Shirley MacLaine continues to be a free spirit and force of nature as she enters her “third act” of life, as she says, and she’s still telling it like it is. In the most revealing book of her career, I’m Over All That: And Other Confessions,” the 76-year-old actress discusses everything from sex to politics to aging in Hollywood.
MacLaine talked to Parade.com about her new book and why she’s not holding back, whether discussing daily annoyances or the big questions in life.
On the surge of tabloid fame.
“That is such an aberrant behavior pattern, but I think some of the stars encourage it to tell you the truth. I remember thinking when I was in my twenties that I knew some of my buddies in the business would dress up to go to the market. Well, what do you expect? I’m not interested in fame at all.”
She does have sympathy for paparazzi-hounded actors.
“I don’t know how they do it. I feel sorry for the Jennifer Anistons of the world because it’s soul-searing to have your life recorded and perused. It really is inhuman.”
Leo, Reese, and More Stars Sound Off on Tabloid Fame
On the stigma that women in Hollywood can’t get along.
“Women being pitted each other another in Hollywood is an old tactic, but it’s not real at all. Women love working together. That’s my experience anyway.”
On her friend Elizabeth Taylor and how every man she ever introduced to her fell in love with her immediately.
“She wanted it to happen! She loved that interaction, she really did.”
On the vanity of male actors.
“I think male actors get confused by their own vanity. It’s really hard for them. They don’t like to seem like they care, but they desperately care that they’re beautiful.”
On the young actresses she thinks have true star power.
“I think Anne Hathaway has it. And definitely Natalie Portman.”
Her favorite films.
“Terms of Endearment and Steel Magnolias.”
On her passion for live performing.
“I love the silence. When you’ve got complete control over the audience and they’re silent, it’s so wonderful.”
On the drama of 2012.
“The 2012 end date represents a cosmic choice we must each make. It really might be the end of our karmic drama, so to speak. I think we’re in for some big changes, but I don’t think it’s the end of anything. It’s a chance for new beginnings.”
On her quiet life in New Mexico:
“I love the beauty. There are crystals around there and it amplifies the consciousness. I love that.”
On her love of writing.
“I love studying other people and what they’re doing. I love different aspects of human nature. That’s why I write. I’m very interested in how insane everybody is.”
On her next book.
“I don’t think I’m ever going to stop writing because I really love to sit down and say what’s on my mind. We’ll have to see what happens. It will have to be after 2012. It will be a 2012 post experience!”

Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for sharing this. This lady is famous yet humble. She is very bold and straightforward with her opinions and spirituality. I can see that the game did not control and corrupt her in anyway unlike other less fortunate stars. She is the boss of her life and she is in full control. She is very clear of what she wants and what her mind is doing. She is aware of her own mind.
She is such an inspiration to be able to control her life in such a way without being swept away by Maras such as fame and wealth.
Humbly,
Chris chong
In any sectors, we will find some people who will think and act differently from the main stream. MacLaine is a good example. She is exactly that type of person who dares to speak, act and think differently. This takes tremendous courage.
It is simply so easy for one to get lost in the Hollywood. Too much fame, indulgence and illusions, yet MacLaine can still stay grounded. For me, she has a very strong be-true-to-yourself spirit.
Anyway, at the end of our days, we cant take away fame.
An inspiring person for me indeed.
Shirley Maclaine seems like a remarkable person and very very grounded person despite she was a celebrity. I feel sometimes stars when they start to fade sometimes they fade in a bad manner probably due to them running out of merits they have used up during their course of their spectacular lives. I mean it almost like living like God, whatever relationship you want you can get, whatever things you want you can get and so forth, such a situation will get them to use up countless merits.
Those who are lasting in Hollywood, or anywhere else for that matter, always are the ones who tell it like it is. Not rudely but in a direct manner. Her’s isn’t an “I don’t give a s***” attitude but more “this is what I am, love it or leave it”…Ms MacLaine may be 76 but she’s a breath of fresh air amongst the younger stars out there who only want to please their audience so they can prolong their fame. Kind of like Rinpoche – people gravitate towards Rinpoche for his sincerity, and stick around for his honesty in always wanting the best for you.
I guess most of the “stars” would sometime in life got bored with all the stars chasing.
Look around us these days, everyone wants to be a star! from youtube style to whatever idol competition to even being the biggest losers.. i mean what has the media and the world is promoting to the kids?
It is all about money and fame! as the stars grew older… really, how much can you compete? Everything eventually will start fading away which most of them become lonely, bitter and insecure. But those who are smart will actually gained a lot of wisdom through experience and get out there and inspired people…
While we can, no matter where we are. We are the stars of our own. People are watching us. It is really up to us… which star we aspire to be…
I remember her very fondly in Terms of Endearment. I loved that movie so much and it made me cry buckets and buckets. My most favourite movie of hers are “Being There” with Peter Sellers and “Guarding Tess” with Nicholas Cage. I thought Being There was such a departure for both her and Peter Sellers at that time, especially when Peter was more famous for his Pink Panther comedies. It was such a beautiful and deep movie.
Shirley MacLaine is a real star who has been around for a long time. She has always struck me as someone who values acting as her craft and not someone who is “bought over” by the fame game. She has such a light hearted perspective, which always made her so refreshing to watch.
I guess, she is one of the few actresses (like Merly Streep) who can remain herself and yet evolve with the changing times. Something similar to the kind of spirituality that Rinpoche teaches us all. Spirituality is not about losing ourselves completely into some blind faith, but it is about becoming a better us, while remaining true to ourselves.
Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing this post with us.
Shirley MacLaine combines great active energy and tranquil abiding in her person.Whether she is enthralling her audience by holding them in enwrapped awe and silence or staying in peaceful quietness in her home in New Mexico, she shows that she’s a person who is in full control of herself and has found her inner peace.
Her spirituality, in the midst of so much glamor surrounding her as a film star, is amazing. Yet, it is a spirituality that will appeal to the world at large because she did not have to step out of it and go to a cave to attain it.
I love women like her. They don’t say very much, but whatever they say carries weight.
She doesn’t look like she has to worry about building a reputation either – her actions and words are in sync to gain the respectable reputation a 76 year old lady should have.
Shirley MacLaine is also one of my favourite actress and star. With her very smiling eyes and jovial personality she will definitely attract many people. She is 76 years old and has authored a book “I’m over all that” where she discusses sex, politics to aging in Hollywood. She is very found of writing and loves to learn about the nature of people. When she perform her shows life she prefers her audience to be silent and concentrate on her show one pointedly. One of the main qualities she has is she is very spiritual besides being intelligent.
Thanks! I enjoyed reading this posting!
