The Stairs
Sometime in 1994 or 1995, I and four monks stayed in a shop lot in Grik, Perak. We were there for about two to three weeks. I shared a room with one monk and the rest slept in the other room.
Throughout our stay in this shop lot, we kept hearing footsteps walking up the stairs. These footsteps were not random, but deliberate and even rhythmic. It was as if someone who wore very hard wooden shoes was walking. And the sound came closer or became louder – as if it was approaching the room I was sleeping in. Even the other monk sharing the room with me heard these strange footsteps.
Later I learnt that the monks in the other room also heard these footsteps. One monk in particular had an even eerier experience. Watch the video to find more.

Addendum
Spirits have no definitive form and just like humans, some may be benevolent and some malicious. They are trapped by their negative karma, hence they exist as spirits for thousands of years. Only when their karma is exhausted can they then take a new rebirth into another existence. A malicious spirit can attach itself to us, causing interferences or harm, such as accidents, negative dreams and in some severe cases, even death.
Dorje Shugden’s practice, especially in the form of Trakze, is efficacious for overcoming negative and harmful energies. This practice also offers protection from negative speech, negative mantras, spells or charms, sudden deaths and fatal accidents. To learn more, please click here.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.
There are alot unexplainable things and experience out there and all these exist concurrently . Most of the time, they need help as they are stuck in the situation for sometime but for wrathful type is dangerous and can cause distrubances.
Hearing footsteps middle of the night will definitely scare those people sleeping. Staying in old hotels seem to happen as I have heard stories of noises, footsteps or people talking and so on. Weird happenings too which I have experienced where the room supposed to be a non-smoking room, but middle of the night someone been smoking in room. I am lucky to have Dorje Shugden pendant protection and reciting of mantras helps me. There must be spirits or unseen roaming or stuck there too long. At such case we have to respect them ,make offerings or to appease them. Now we have Dorje Shugden’s practice, especially in the form of Trakze, which we can do prayers and dedicate to them. This practice also offers protection as well from negative speech, negative mantras, spells or charms, sudden deaths and fatal accidents.
Thank you Rinpoche for this sharing .
That was scaryyyy!
I still ? at the part about the other monk refusing to go check out the noise. Very informative 🙂
I do enjoyed watching scary adventures and paranormal videos even though scary at times. Hearing footsteps walking up the stairs middle of the night will definitely scared anyone. In fact I heard many old hotels or even new hotels ,quests has experienced many weird happenings at night like footsteps , knocking at doors and so forth. What Rinpoche and the rest experienced was so scary when there are nobody else. What ever it was must be some unseen beings staying there long time ago. Unseen beings do exist after all we have to respect them in a way ,make offerings or to appease them.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing your experienced story with us.
Dear Rinpoche, I love these paranormal stories. Especially the ones from Rinpoche’s blog and Ghost Adventures. Although I will be scared sometimes when I watch these videos but I’m still very interested in watching the videos. Ghost Adventures have really good paranormal videos and they are super daring, if I were one of the crew member I would have fainted countless of times or died. LOL
Dear Rinpoche, I love Rinpoche’s paranormal articles on this blog. The articles are really interesting, entertaining and scary(sometimes). I love all of the article in this Tsem Rinpoche’s Paranormal Zone especially when Rinpoche is hosting and except for the aliens one. No offense Rinpoche, but I don’t really have much interest in them. I hope Rinpoche will post more articles about paranormal activities.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this spookie story. If i counter the samething can I chant the Setrap mantra?
This is a nice story. Kinda spooky … hehe. I can imagine if I am sleeping and I heard footsteps coming to my door, i would curled up and maybe jump outside the window..hehe.. It is a nice story from Rinpoche, and we also learn about the land deity, so it makes us more aware about the surrounding. These deities and spirits do exist, so since they are here before us, we should show some respect and make offering. They too like us come in different personalities, it is like being nice to a friend. So we shouldn’t mock the spirits, make noise and make them angry.
Thank you, Rinpoche, for sharing this interesting and spookie encounter with us again!
Dear Rinpoche,
Many locals believe that the local land deity or what they referred to as ‘Datuk Kong’ actually wear wooden clogs or ‘terompah’ in Malays; a commonly worn cheap footwear by the local folks.
When my hometown house (a 3-storey shop lot) in Kelantan was being built in the 70s, the workers who stayed overnight at our unfinished house told us the stories how they heard the footsteps on the staircase exactly like how u described. One of the workers actually saw a white figure walked through the door towards them. Needless to say, they ran away immediately. Later we were advised to set up a land deity ‘house’ to make offerings and to appease ‘him’.
Though we didn’t prepare the ‘house’ for land deity, our neighbour did. We have a Kuan Yin altar instead. I guess the Kuan Yin bless our house.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this story 🙂

Thank you Rinpoche for the story. I always believe that we have to respects all beings, no matter where you are. Especially in the woods!!
Fantastic, Rinpoche! I also just watched the Burning Eyes story. I’ve always been fascinated by the supernatural, haunted places, and the mysterious ever since I was a child. I was constantly telling my mother about all my crazy dreams. Anyway, I’m thrilled to see Rinpoche’s Paranormal Zone up and running!
This is a must watch video. It was interesting to learn more about ghosts from this video.
My roommates had similar experience when we were staying in the hostel. They heard knocks on the door, but it was not normal – I don’t know how to explain this; it was strong
knocks but it was not hitting the surface of the door, but a force that hit and ‘went inside’ the door to hit and knock it.
I guess many people have these paranormal experience but don’t know what to do. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing the “solutions” when people encounter these beings.
heheheheheheehe Dear Rinpoche,I swear to you this happened to me a long time ago in Germany, but it was not outside the hotel,it was in my own room when the lights were off,so I had to turn on the lights and I were not able to sleep all night.
Wonderful! I found this sharing to be very frightening.. the way Rinpoche explains the rhytmic sounds of the steps, it´s something about that steady rhytm that makes it so eerie.. Thank you for sharing Rinpoche.
If I were the monk in the toilet, either I would faint from beeing too terrified and unconsciously had one of my leg stuck into the toilet bowl, or I would be very very very devoted to Lord Setrap as I would be chanting Lord Setrap’s mantra all night long until the very next day. Either way, I would not leave the toilet until the sun shine into the toilet.
Dear Rinpoche, thank you for sharing. I have goosebump when watching the video at night. Haha.
interesting encounter and sharing from Rinpoche, and i wonder what happen to the video at minute 15:41 and 15:4? it went blank.
Thank you very much. The story and explanation gives a clearer perspective than what we usually hear about “ghosts”, and relates it to Buddhism.
thank you
Dear Rinpoche,
Thanks for the sharing. Is there any method to reduce electrical items damage when it’s “interfering” with a certain ‘energy’? Each time A visitor staying at my house, there will be some minor electrical items damage. It starts with bulb..am ok. But now, damage came to hood and ionizer… sob sob…very costly! No one will believe me about the “energy” fell that I had.
Hi I had this problem in an old place I used to live …………….. you may be on a fult line X
