The Tree
My natural mother had many personal paranormal experiences.
When I visited her whilst she was living in Philadelphia, she re-told the story of how an old man would appear from a particular window every time she attempted to sleep.
When large areas of land are cleared and trees are cut down, ‘whatever’ or ‘whomever’ was previously living there may get angered, upset and/or highly disturbed. Like anyone else in distress, the old man would come to my natural mother to express his concerns when the land surrounding her home was being cleared.
He had a particular hand gesture, a particular outfit and a particular facial expression… Watch the video to learn one possible way to stop disturbances or unwanted visitations into your home.

Spirits have no definitive form and just like humans, some may be benevolent and some malicious. They are trapped by their negative karma, hence they exist as spirits for thousands of years. Only when their karma is exhausted can they then take a new rebirth into another existence. A malicious spirit can attach itself to us, causing interferences or harm, such as accidents, negative dreams and in some severe cases, even death.
Dorje Shugden’s practice, especially in the form of Trakze, is efficacious for overcoming negative and harmful energies. This practice also offers protection from negative speech, negative mantras, spells or charms, sudden deaths and fatal accidents. To learn more, please click here.

Mother nature has always done good to us. They have provided shelter for the living things and non living, any kind of disturbance to nature will shake its equilibrium.
It is pivotal, to take good care of those who lives at trees as they too have feelings. One need to respect the feelings whomever that is living in trees, since this ensures everyone to live happily without any disturbance.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.
There are alot of spirits out there and they due to karma- anger, fear, delusions.
Is very important to practise and be prepare for death.
Ground like trees.
Trees has a lot of wisdom, it nurtures and deeply heals me. It teaches me the importance of staying grounded to be strong, like seeing the roots of the trees, you realizes how it hold us steady even strong winds come. They are connected to mother earth, all the trees are root together into the earth, every life are connecting to each other. I love trees very much, my mom is a tree hugger and I am like her now hehe.
It sadden me whenever I see a tree cutting down. My grandfather loves tree too, he used to protect a big tree in front of his house, because grand mom wanted to cut the tree down. How many years we spent to have a old tree? Please do not cut them down easily. The cutting down of trees mean we are destroy connection, we can selective removal of certain parts of the tree, do pruning but not cutting down.
Every where there is spirits or unseen beings . Even old tress do have spirits too. Heard of it those days but for one to see it daily is scary. I am sure Rinpoche’s mother had goose bumps seeing the old man spirit. Luckily not a harmful spirit. Tree spirit is a nature deity related to a tree and are present in many cultures. As many of us do believed that if we cut down a tree with a spirit dwelling in it, is not so good. We are disturbing them. To avoid any misfortune we have prayers to appease the tree spirits, asking their permission to do so…..clearing obstacles or any ugly incident happenings.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this .
Those days I always heard that old trees are haunted but do not understand much. But as I started reading Buddhism books I came to understand that trees and surrounding forest do have spirits guardian. We do not destroyed the environment ,clearing digging and so forth without doing prayers to inform them of the disturbance. Rinpoche’s natural mother has experienced some sleep disturbance when her house surrounding has been cleared. The family priest gave a slight image of a Buddha facing the tree . All goes well after that that old man never appeared again. Wow having a image of Namgyalma is very beneficial . Namgyalma is a deity for long life, destroyed obstacles and purification. It is said to be very powerful protects us from unwanted visitors or unseen beings.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing your own experience ….a story told by Rinpoche’s mother.
Dear Rinpoche, it’s lucky that the old man spirit that RInpoche’s mother encounter is not evil or harmful. But Rinpoche’s mother must have really been terrified because for a normal person they will get frightened when they see a spirit visiting them every single day and some might even go crazy . I’m even having goosebumps right now. Lol
Dear Rinpoche, if I am the old man, I will be angry too because no one likes strangers to tear down my house or doing construction around my house. No sentient beings like that because if will be very annoying and they couldn’t rest. I wish that no sentient being will lose their properties or habitats. Thank you for reading
This is an interesting paranormal story. As a child I lived very close to the forest and we were always taught to respect nature especially very old trees. I didn’t quite understand why but this story explains it well. There was this one old tree that we were warned never to go near. One day during a very heavy storm, the tree was struck by lighting and literally split in half.
I wonder why it is spirits come when we are in that “in-between” stage of sleep, or is it that when we are in a particular state of mind/consciousness that we can see them. There is so much we don’t know about beings around us.
I didn’t know Namgyalma is also efficacious for repelling obstacles and disturbances. The very image of the Buddha was enough to deter the disturbance. Does anyone know why?
I really like this story! not only we get to listen some really spooky interesting paranormic story, we also get to learn about Namgyalma! Double bonus!
Thankyou Rinpoche!
It has been said that the significance of trees are that, they are deeply rooted into the earth, which signify their connection with the “underworld”. Tree spirits are therefore said to be connected to the actual physical trees with their bodies. Trees are said to be great energy converters too and they can be used to transmute our negative energy to help heal us. The cutting down of trees may destroy the abodes of many tree spirits, drive them away from their natural homes and greatly anger them, therby causing retariation. It is advised that before any action is taken certain offerings should be made first to appease the tree spirits, to clear away obstacles or any “unwanted visitations, mishaps or disturbances” occuring later on!
The background in the video is very beautiful. The teaching by Rinpoche is very powerful. In the past, I only knew that Namgyalma is a Buddha related to long life and now I know that she can also help in spirit matters.
Dear Rinpoche, Thank you for sharing this video with us and for a brief explanation of Namgyalma and the benefit of placing a Buddha’s photo/image to prevent visitation. The is a very useful advise which I can share with others to stop disturbances or unwanted visitations.
Basically I only know that Namgyalma is for long life and purification. Very powerful in the sense that increase your life-span, purify your obscurations and free yourself from diseases.
Interesting to know that it’s also for stopping disturbance from unwanted guest.
I have heard a lot from friends of this kind of disturbances. Some of them able to stop it and some not. Really depend on your karma too whether you are able to meet someone that able to help.
Thanks Rinpoche for your post and this give me ae great knowledge of another Buddha’s quality that I’m able to share with others.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing. This reminds me of a very old oak tree at the bottom of the garden in a house we once lived. We lived there for about 3 years and I have only ventured down there maybe 3 times. The first time I felt hairs on end! I remembered red sap used to flow from the bark! Only after we have moved out, did I find out that a spirit resides there.
There are many beings who share our physical world apart from humans and animals. Some people can see these beings but most can’t see them. I don’t have reason why some people are more inclined or in tune that they can detect such beings. Just because something cannot be measured empirically.
Also in quantum physics they have this new theory that given the same factors and they do experiments, the results of the experiments are not the same, apparently the people who do the experiments under the same conditions it differs from person to person. Hence this is quite close to reality when people have different karmas, they can affect the results of the same action. I think its called Observer effect (physics). I first came across this when reading the Dalai Lama’s teaching which was made into a book called ‘The Meaning of Life’.
Dear Rinpoche,
I really liked your video about the effectiveness of Buddha images etc as if placed in the home where disturbances are felt. I personally experienced strange whispering (it sounded like more than 1 person talking but I could not understand the language)coming from the corner of my room when I was in the in between sleep and awake state one day when I was lying in bed. I tried to get up to see where the sound came from and I could not move at all. It was at that point that I realized that this was a supernatural event. My room also always felt like there was a strange presence there, Sometimes when I lie in bed, I see strange shadows on the wall. This may be because because my home was left empty for 5-7 years before we moved in and its located in an area with alot of trees.. I invited lama Tsongkapa home and I did not experience that strange noise or not being able to move again. Once when I recited Praises to Tara, my picture flew from the book shelf it was on to my bed, as if someone had thrown the picture.
However, the real change in the atmosphere came to my home when I attended a puja by Ganden monks where they made a figure of me dough and I had to bring a worn t shirt and some coins, I can’t remember the name of the puja, but it was an obstacle clearing puja. After the puja, the heavy feeling in my room lifted completely, and I fell that the whole house feels normal and light.
Dear RInpoche, i had the experienced of the time in between sleeping and awake that will dreamt something weird like what your natural mother experiences. Is that the time where we are not in conscious? Or there is other explanation?
Thanks Rinpoche for sharing 🙂
very interesting story from Rinpoche, now we know what to do any of our friends and relative having this kind of disturbances. i personally like Namgyalma alot, because of her form and also the benefit that one can benefit from propitiating and chantra her Mantra. Thank you Rinpoche for this story.
I liked the setting of the story! Well, I recently moved to a new town in a different country, and I have been having so many vivid dreams, too many and quite strange. Your video made me think of something. Last Sunday I went to visit a small castle near the woods in the middle of a park. The night after, I dreamed of this small castle as if swollowed by tall trees and of woman- like- doll I was screaming at: You are dead! you are dead! You are dead! No, I am not, no, i am not, No , I am not- she was answering Then 2 days after this dream, someone told me that 20 years ago during a concert held in the park of the castle a huge tree fell down killing 14 people…I was wondering if there is a connection…
