Marshall’s Country Store in New Jersey
We were driving along from New Jersey to Pennsylvania yesterday (November 6, 2013) and this place along the road caught my eye. We stopped over to gaze at the amazing produce, natural food products, vegetable and fruits. The whole ambience of the store is old world in a good way and the staff and owners very friendly and helpful. I explained to them that the store was done with so much love, care and warmth. You can feel this as you walk in. For example, they had many types of delicious apples for sale and over each type of apple basket they would list the ‘flavour’, crispiness, sour/sweet and so on of that type of apple. They wanted to make sure you know and enjoy what you are buying. That is care. It was so detailed and all hand written too. Amazing. They had homemade pickles of all sorts, peanut butters, jams, preserved fruits/vegetables, cooked muffins, brownies, pies and so on. There are a lot of stuff. Good things.
Halloween is big for them the owner told me and they have numerous Halloween decorations decked out around the shop and behind. Veritable visual feast. You can see this is a business to these lovely people, but also it is their passion and pride. The owner was very warm and wanted to take me around their grounds and show me more, but I didn’t have time although I appreciated it very much.
The owners are Marianne and Nick. Then there was this lovely counter girl Holly that worked there also. I asked Holly permission to film the place and blog and she said a yes with a smile and right there and then I can feel the warmth. They were warm, welcoming and genuinely kind proprietors. Holly and I shared the fact we both like the actress Kathy Bates because I mentioned the place really looked like a movie set from Stephen King.
The whole field around it, with the pumpkins, the hay, country store just looked like the perfect setting for a Stephen King movie. Stephen King’s movies are usually set somewhere in middle America and simple small town people. Interesting people. I love it. Well I thought country stores like this were long gone where you sell your own wholesome products, but I was wrong. If you are ever in these parts, do visit Marshall’s Country Store!

P.S. Dear Holly,
I mentioned to you one of the movies that Kathy Bates was in that you had not seen. I couldn’t think of the name when we were speaking about it yesterday, but now I found the name for you: Dolores Claiborne
Please find this movie and watch it! Watch it when you have time and not busy. You really have to listen carefully and not miss a lot of subtle innuendos in the dialogue. It is intense, moving, touching and very powerful. I am sure you will enjoy it. 🙂
Here is a little clip:
Marshall’s Farm Market and Country Store
NOTE: The following has been extracted from their brochure:
Proudly serving the community since 1920
A visit to Marshall’s Farm Market is like stepping back in time. Old time values of hard work, friendliness, service and the finest quality are what you can expect.
The Marshall Family emigrated from Upstate New York and Patterson, New Jersey to Belvidere, New Jersey in the very early 1900’s. Once settled, they opened and operated a general store in Belvidere on Water Street. They had one son George, who was born in 1914.
The Marshall family purchased property on Route #46 in Delaware, NJ. Originally a gladiola farm, the family decided to make it into a roadside stand, selling various handmade lawn ornaments, picture frames and home grown produce.
When George’s parents passed away in the 1950’s, George continued on with the family business, focusing on fresh produce; much of which is still grown here today.
93 years and five generations later, the Marshall family still owns and operates Marshall’s Farm Market. George’s vision of selling home grown produce and quality items, and being a family operated business still continue to serve the community today.
From April until fall, we sell beautiful flowers for Easter, Mother’s day and other holidays. We have a large selection of jams, jellies, preserves and delicious smoked meats that many customers rave about! From May until the Fall, we offer a large selection of our own fresh produce such as water cress, strawberries, black raspberries, blueberries, corn, tomatoes and much more!
In the fall months, we have pumpkins and hayrides for children and adults. We also have fresh, local pressed cider and a favourite to many – our hot, fresh apple cider donuts.

Amazing, such a lovely shop. Marianne and Nick ……the owner has bought and decided to make it into a roadside stand. The family of 3 took lot of effort to maintain these amazing farm. They took time to do everything in order, with all the signage and labelling . They are selling homemade pickles of all sorts, from peanut butters, jams and so forth. They have preserved fruits fresh vegetables and fruits for sale.
They have numerous Halloween decorations too at the back of the shop.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.
Wow this is a very interesting store. I like the decoration both inside and outside. Feel so warm and the owner have put so much thoughts into it. I would like to homemade products as well as all the apples outside the store. Lovely place.
That looks like a very nice place and I am happy Rinpoche could enjoy himself there. It looks nice and i like the store is like a small nice store, i like how there is actually a nice small store for those things. I hope Rinpoche has a great time in America!
Such an adorable little shop, from the photos it shows that indeed a lot of care and love has been put into each and every corner of the shop. I can see why Rinpoche likes it, especially promoting good, fresh, organic and healthy products which taste good at the same time. Would have loved to visit the shop too. It also looks quite fun to have put all those Halloween decorations around the compound. Its quite amazing their shop has been running for 93 years and counting, everyday of the week. I wish them very much success to continue promoting fresh and organic products. I hope Rinpoche is enjoying his trip in the states.
What a charming little store! Home grown produce prepared with lots of love. Just by looking at the pictures I can already feel the warmth and friendliness of the proprietors that makes it so inviting. Dedication, passion and love in what you’re doing brings very different and obvious results than doing it just for the sake of doing it.
The store and environment are just like those that they showed at cinemas and TV series of those cowboy series scenes. The decor really looks fruity but depicts hard work, effort and love – looks clean, nice great and welcoming! The store owners were sure warm and friendly too, as described. Many thanks to Rinpoche for the sharing, hope you are having a grand time wherever you are!
How nice if we have this kind of stalls in Malaysia. So many varieties of fruits to choose from. The place looks really welcoming and warm and they are open 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year for 93 years and counting! How passionate are the owners in their work!
Thank you for the sharing Rinpoche. The country store really look very professionally set up with reminiscent of the past. With the style it was set up,they sure look user friendly.Very nice to see how well they use the wooden racking and display compared to our supermarket which use much plastic and metal gondolas. The owner of the Marshall Country Store truly shows his pride in setting up the place and good old country hospitality.
The people live around and nearby the Marshall’s country store in New Jersey are so fortunate, they can have access to all the natural healthy foods there and also live happily in the community like one big family. Thank you for sharing these amazing pictures.
Wow, everything in Marshall’s Country Store are fresh and neatly set-up. It’s really like going back to the old movies scene and truly amazing of what we can see here. I can feel the passion and patience manifested from the owners through their selling products at their stall with all the fresh apples, jams, peanut butter and all the good stuff which are fresh and clean. Thank you Rinpoche for taking your time to share this beautiful place and i really love to see it.
Very classic store that we probably see them in the cowboy movie. I love all the home make items that they especially the jam and the apple cider, I wish one of this kind of store will available in Malaysia. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing all these pictures.
This place is just so amazing, it is obvious that the owners of the place too a lot of effort to maintain the place and do up all the signage for each and every item with their hearts. They took time to do everything with so much thought. It is just great to see shops like this still exist.
I really hope that I would be able to make trips down to shops like this really soon. It is just unbelievable that this kind of things can still be found in today’s society.
this place looks nice and if it is as good as Rinpoche says then it must be pretty good, the store looks great and Rinpoche says the people are nice and you do not get a lot of nice people in stores anymore. i hope Rinpoche had a great time
This store is indeed filled with a lot of love. I could see the amount of effort put into the store in the pictures. I would love to go there and see how it really looks like! And i am sure that the foods and other goods there are fantastic! Thank you for sharing Rinpoche.
The description on this post remind me of a TV series I watch during my teen -“The Watson”. It bring back lots of memory of that era were life was simple, I guess this is probably the only program that everyone watch as it was the only program that aired! As compare to now when all of us was embracing the cyber world, so was our desire and attachment grows disproportionately.
The Marshall Family have a good concept and operate this family business “farm market” already 93 years and passed through five generations. I love the decoration of this shop, feel so comfortable and convenience. Fresh vegetables, fruits and homemade products are the first choice of all customers, this is really nice shop. Thank you Rinpoche for sharing.
Some parts of the US did not lose its charm. looks like you had a great time Rinpoche.
The place looks very refreshing and ‘welcoming’! They sell a lot of stuff, it would be so good if Malaysia has one… The apples look really really tasty! Hehe
I think one of the reasons that the market was operating for decades is because the owners/ people who work there are very friendly and their foods are fresh, I think that is what make them well-known. Thank You for sharing Rinpoche.
This place is very well done and very beautiful. I like how they actually seperate the various foodstuffs even down to their textures and flavor, so that you can know that you are getting exactly what you want. It shows that they really care about their customers.
Thanks Rinpoche for the sharing.
I never been to USA before and through Rinpoche’s sharing, i can know more about the unique side of USA.
I really envy that in USA they can get fresh apples very easily, but here we can only get apples coated with wax, which is very unhealthy.
Really thanks Rinpoche for the sharing.
Such lovely photos of the store. Makes me wanna buy anything and everything there. It all looks so fresh and home made. This store is 93 years old. If only we have something like this in our country….
Dear Rinpoche,
This is such a beautiful store! I can’t help but wanting to visit this store! It is very well decorated, homely, and friendly. The owners are really meticulous and put in a lot of love and attention to detail to ensure their customers are happy when they buy their fresh produce and other products. It is with this care for the customers that Marshall’s Farm Market and Country Store shines! It is their formula for success and why they are still around since 1920! Customers will definitely return to their store again and again.
I’ve lived in Knowlton (that little scenic town where Marshall’s is- 32 sq. miles of mostly farms and peaceful neighborhoods) for 23 years and I’ve frequented that farm stand about that long. Nick, Marianne and Holly are the best. And they have an adorable beagle, Lucy Lu, too. If you go back, make sure you try the Cider Donuts!
Dear Bethany,
I enjoyed reading your comments and I agree with you. The Knowlton area is very peaceful and scenic. I can see myself living in that area easily. I enjoyed driving through and stopping at some places. I love trees, greens and seclusion.
I will try their donuts next time! Thanks. TR
Just seeing the pictures here makes me think I am there at the stores trying to pick up those wonderful organic produce for it has always been my favourite place of these sorts to browse through and seek new things. Thank you for sharing with us Rinpoche.
I have known Marianne and Nick mostly all my life my family spent alot of time with them. Loved growing up there knoqing we would always go to Marshalls for our fruits , vegatables and beautiful flowers and the smiles. They are the greatest people you will meet they treat everybody in the area like family and always have. I have not been home in many years and this makes me so homesick for the things I miss and the people. To Marianne and Nick great job in keeping Marshalls open for everyone to come in and get the best in the area.
By just looking at the pictures of the store, one feel like going to shop there. I always dream to run a shop like this, by selling your own produce of jams, cookies, cake, bread, groceries, dry food and etc.
I sure cannot bring too much cash while shopping in this kind of shop, haha. How often we can see shop that have their price tag and name of the produce written by hand? That’s personal touch which this modern lacks of. In the era of globalisation, homemade products especially with personal touch are more and more sought after by many.
To have a shop just beside your farm is such a good idea and good way to show how “real” is your produce…
Wow, this is my kinda of farm store! Fresh produce on display, different types of squashes and I have never seen those corns before. Wondered if KFR will have this kind of store in future?
Bottled jam, pickles, home-made stuff, fruits and delicious natural food galore, all in abundance, all neatly arrange. Yummy!
Over and above all this are the ambience, the warmth of the people in this country and farm market, people who represent old time values like hardwork, friendliness, service to the finest quality. They reflect their passion and pride.
Dear Rinpoche, these pictures are too amazing to be real. The structure of the store is exactly like the one in the movies. I really wish that Malaysia have this kind of countryside and it’s would also be really amazing if Malaysia celebrate this kind of events. And I really hope that I can visit places like this when I have the chance to go to America.
There’s lots of places like this (if you know where to look/go) around where I live (Carroll County, Maryland). There’s also lots of urban/city/new-age places. One road will be paved and modern. Go down another road and it is still a dirt/gravel road with Peacocks sitting in people’s yards and chickens in the middle of the road, in your way. Quite a contrast! Thanks for sharing! #GoneCountry
I will go bonkus shopping in this place! Look at those fresh produce and especially the butternut and corn! OMG its Rinpoche’s favourite blue corn! and it’s FRESH! I like how it’s neatly presented with the rustic feel but so so organized. I wanna go there soon!
It’s actually like a movie set what You had said, rinpoche. Pretty cool stuff with freshness. Marshall’s store is nicely display and spacious. Can’t imagine it’s been passed down through 5 generations already, rather difficult these days. I love the Halloween decos out in the open, very close to nature 🙂
I wish, I wish for such a store like this in Malaysia! Looking at the rows of home made jam, pickles, peanut butter, etc. makes my mouth water, especially if they are from original recipes. Such dedication from the family that kept the business running for 5 generations.
It’s very nice. This place looks and feels like one you read in a story book but it is real and exist. The fruits are mouth watering. 🙂 The owner and works are really passionate about their job. One can feel they have put so much effort and care into their work. And the best part is they open 7 days a week 52 weeks a year!
This place is really like a well made set straight out of a movie set. It is unbelievable in its quaintness, rawness and realness. I was very happy to come across this as it truly brings back the sense of fresh seasonal produce as opposed to prepacked chemical and perservatives laden foodstuff of supermarket chains. The homemade honey roasted peanut butter is DIVINE!
