Tsem Rinpoche parenting
September 27, 2012
(By Pastor Loh Seng Piow)
His Eminence Tsem Rinpoche may be a monk, but He can handle and nurture kids much better than many parents.
Watch this video of how Tsem Rinpoche dealt with a kid who “misbehaved” by throwing tantrum because he could not win a game…
Rinpoche knows how to be firm, serious, loving, caring, cajoling and playful at the right time to nurture a kid to become a better person…this is a great example of Dharma in real life shown to us by a great Teacher who embodies Dharma in Him…

I have always heard Rinpoche said dharma was the highest knowledge one can attain, with dharma one can tame the minds of sentient beings and bring them to the buddha dharma. So a Buddha is able to deal will all kinds of personalities and characters and bring them to liberation.
Rinpoche is indeed the Great Father for everyone no matter how old we are, Rinpoche always guide us by action as a reminder to us how we got to be with everyone surrounding us.
May Lord Manjushri lessen down our ignorance as soon possible hence we able to collect more Merits to keep follow Rinpoche path to be a better person towards generate Bodhichitta to all sentient beings.
Dear All
I just watched this video… although this video is very caring and loving. I feel uncomfortable what is written that Tsem Rinpoche parents better than most parents. This is not a very fair comment… do you know every parent? As a mother I feel this comment is negative. I am a frequent visitor to this website and respect Tsem Rinpoche’s work. Sometimes we do need to be careful how we use our words. I hope this email has been helpful.
Love & Peace

I totally agree that Rinpoche is a very caring person. He always buy figurines, toys, books and etc. And he also always bring me and my sister out for activities. I really should have listened and followed to what Rinpoche has said and treasure those moments. Last time, all I only wanted was to have fun 24/7 but now….. I regret about everything that I should have done in the past. But just by regretting about the past won’t do any much better. Do what I have to do for the coming future.
Rinpoche is indeed an extraordinary, radiant, fascinating and exceptional Buddhist monk and teacher, who has traversed continents to fulfil a lifelong commitment to the world. Evidently, Rinpoche has had gone through the exceptional experiences, love, losses, joy and tragedies of a being, but who turned every painful moment of his life into positivity and light. Today, he seems to be showing us how to be kind, inspiritionally strong, yet forgiving and tenacious, in the fulfilment of living a happy and joyful life. Let it be done on kids, adults or animal beings, it awakens in us the kindness and love, teaching us to protect every living thing on this earth! Om mani padme hung.
Absolutely adorable, how Rinpoche is explaining this kid to get rid of anger. I think that being a Monk does not refer to this issue. because an angry child is easyly offended by his parents. but from someone with such huge compassion, love and understandig as it is for Rinpoche, the anger just meltet away. what I like to say is, being a monk or not, if you have the qualities of a Buddha. it just works. and as I see in Rinpoches videos is, that he always finds the right methods. huge fan. thashi delek
Wonderful!! As a father to two teenagers, I must say that I should have learned from Rinpoche this approach in educating children. Fantastic!!
All parents out there – please share this video out to other parents.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing!
It was touching to view the video how Tsem Rinpoche handle the child patiently, with care and love.sometime I easy short temper and angry at my children..I need to llearn how to use proper methods to communicate with children instead with angry actions. Tq for sharing.
Rinpoche is a very caring person, capable of teaching children from very young. Rinpoche is very patient with kids when reinforcing what their parents teach them and instilling the holy Dharma. Rinpoche is capable of humbling himself to talking to a child for the sake of the future of the child. I remember after that day, Jason started to behave extremely well (with some mischievous mishaps but no one can be perfect 😀 ).
HAAHHA. I remember when this happened 🙂 i was there as well and i remember Jason having this talk with Rinpoche.
I think that Jason was actually very lucky to be able to have this talk with Rinpoche. Rinpoche’s talk with him gave him so much guidance. I remember when Jason came out of the kitchen after talking to Rinpoche so well behaved and peaceful. I think Rinpoche would make a great parent haha.
I would also like to say that we can all use this as an example of the kindness of our guru. I mean, Rinpoche did not need to go and talk to Jason. He really didn’t need to. We call could have just carried on with the game without him. But no, Rinpoche insisted to get Jason back in the game so he could have fun and win prizes. This is the kindness of Rinpoche.
Lastly, i would like to say that i know Jason very well. And i was truly surprised that after his talk with Rinpoche is was so well behaved. I had never seen anyone talk to Jason like that. And i have never seen Jason listen to closely to someone like that. Normally Jason doesn’t even maintain eye contact when you talk to him. But with Rinpoche it was just totally different.
Thank you for sharing.
Rinpoche is always patient and loving to children.
Those children are very lucky to have met Rinpoche at a young age. So did i. I always remember how patient he was and how funny he was just to communicate with me and my brother. A highly respected lama and guru like him didn’t need to do that for us. But he did.
He never force the Dharma onto us, but guide us and taught us in unique fun ways that were easy to absorb.
It is so true to say that children growing up with Dharma will enable them to be wiser, more mature and patient adults.

when wil the day come for me to meet my Lord Guru ? and to hear his sweet voice speaking to me and giving me teachings ? when will that day come ? I am longinh for that day oh Lord My Guru dev .
Rinpoche uses his love, compassion and skillful mean to teach different type of person with different needs.
Rinpoche would make a good parent haha. And i remember when this happened. I was so surprised how easily Rinpoche could talk to jason, and how good jason was behaving after his talk with Rinpoche. So cool.
Dear Rinpoche, we had a lots of fun on that day. I remembered that Julien won the game and he gets to be the first one to pick the prize because he’s the winner. And Julien gave his own prize to his youngest brother, Jason. Over the years, Rinpoche have taught me a lot of things about Dharma but I disappointed Rinpoche because I didn’t do my blog posts. Rinpoche is a very good Lama. I must stop playing with phone so that I can concentrate on my works.
Rinpoche really has a way with kids as well as adults… basically just about anyone. This is because Rinpoche truly genuinely cares that he knows each and everyone’s psyche and Rinpoche would adapt to speak to that person’s level.
Jason like many other spoil child in today’s society is not a bad child, he just needs to be directed correctly and be nurtured the right way. He is so blessed to be able to hang out with a living Buddha, and when you see how Rinpoche teaches and spends time correcting yet loving him, you can see his mind becomes more and more soft and his true gentleness comes out. Any child who gets a chance to be near Rinpoche is bless. Hence this is the many other reasons why Rinpoche wishes for KFR/KV to be up. So that children can come up to KFR and spend some quality time with nature, experience life by connecting with nature. They will also learn how to do simple meditations, they will also sweat, plant, pluck veggies and basically enjoy being outdoors and appreciate the earth we live in while having fun 😉 I hope to bring my niece there too one fine day. Kechara Villa is truly a space for inner growth not just outer.
Rinpoche is with his skillful mean can teach different mentality people, even as a kid. Rinpoche like kid very much always give them a lot care and love and playing with them at the same time teach them dharma when they are young. When they are growing up,they will be spiritual and kind person.
Rinpoche really loves and knows kids, he can make them laugh so easily, i love him! ever since that day my little brother has got a little better. I am so happy for my little brother, Jason
Rinpoche is such a caring person, I love him! Rinpoche really knows and loves kids and he can make them laugh so easily. i am so happy for my little brother, Jason.
This video really warm my heart to see the unconditional love, gentleness and care of Rinpoche for the kid, irrespective who they are. When Rinpoche was at their age, Rinpoche does not have the love and care from his own mother nor foster mother. He had painful childhood and he understands how kids feel. Rinpoche has shown us the way to love and care for our children in skillful ways.
Though it was only a 5 mins video, it was such a heartwarming 5 mins, watching how gentle, loving yet firm Rinpoche was with the little boy. Such unconditional love Rinpoche has for all of us , that as a parent for his child.
Just like how Rinpoche can advise husbands and wives he can also tackle kids. And Rinpoche makes it so easy for the people to follow his advice. A supreme mahasiddha that is what Lama is.
Thanks Seng Piow for this great sharing.
I totally agree with you that Rinpoche in handling and nurturing kids is even better than most parents.
Rinpoche nurturing is coming from a great compasionate heart, care and love. Rinpoche teaching little Jason to be more considerate and to show love to his friends. Let go angersome and show care. Rinpoche has shown me the way to communicate to childrens in oreder for them to received it.
How lucky for Jason metting Rinpoche at this very young age and getting advices from the living buddha.
Rejoice for him.
Children always have a special place in Rinpoche’s heart. Rejoice to see the kids are so close to Rinpoche.
Thank you Rinpoche for using all ways to show us how to handle kids especially when they throw tantrum. This is what all of us as a parent should learn – firm, loving, & fun!
This was exactly what I needed since I go through dealing with my son’s ‘naughtiness’ daily. Unfortunately I always lose it and feel bad after that for scolding him.
Thank you Rinpoche for the simple yet profound example.
I was honored to witness how much fun AND learning the kids got to experience over the weekend at Haven. The kind attendants to Rinpoche prepared a nutritious breakfast for the little visitors, so besides lots of fun playing together, the children eat healthily.
In addition to playing, the children learnt to contribute to the household. The tidy up the kitchen with Uncle Andrew and Auntie Moh Mei. They also went to KFR to celebrate Moon cake Festival and clean up to the end.
I believe the children got to experience work that is fun. I cannot wait for KFR to open and more kids will get the chance to experience dharma at an early age!
Thank you Rinpoche for your patience, care and love for these intelligent kids who are full of great potential.

Dear Mavis,
We are very lucky that we have Manjushri Kids Class at Kechara every Sunday. Manjushri is the Buddha of Wisdom. The kids classes cater for all ages and teach them the values that Rinpoche has kindly given us. Perhaps you would like to bring your son to the Kids Class so that he can also meet other children who are brought up on the Dharma. Your son is still young and a parent’s greatest gift is to give our kids a good foundation.
Have you been to Kechara before?
Best wishes
Sharon
Rinpoche’s love and care is with no limit, is so touching. thank you Seng Piow for recording and shares with us.
If you like it, then you must watch the complete version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDUfgTwZuDg&feature=plcp, which includes the Earring Games.
You will like it, you will get inspired by it.
For me, Rinpoche not only is my spiritual teacher but also like my father on spiritual path.Every time when I was unhappy, I will talk to Rinpoche and make request in front Rinpoche throne. After that,I feel much better and gain inner peace.I believe in Rinpoche and his great blessing that can healing us.
I am speechless Hecelus. Not many young people like you have so much faith in a Spiritual Guide. When I first met Rinpoche, some 17 years ago, Rinpoche told me that whenever I am unhappy, I should speak to Mother Tara or any Buddhas. Rinpoche said there is no point in talking to friends as there are of same level of ‘attainments’ only as me. But if you speak to a Buddha, he can help you. And you are doing exactly that.
Parenting is about unconditional love and skill! Most of us unconditionally ove our kids but do not have the right skills to guide them.
Rinpoche had shown us the way to guide little kids to change their perspective!!
haha cute Jason! Frankly, I don’t think this happen to Jason alone, even adults can get upset when see someone else win or get something, but Rinpoche teaches adults in another way, like Rinpoche teaches us 8 verses of mind transformation.
Rinpoche really shows a very good example for parents or adults to teach/guide the children. Rinpoche speaks and explain the reasons to Jason. Jason will understand and he did at last! Adults might think that kids know nothing, but kids are smart.
Parenting is tough work as it is. More so in our present age with computers, smart phones and Facebook. How do we keep up with the kids who are quicker, smarter and young?
Rinpoche has taught us we can use differing methods that can work on children, which many parents are not able to. Most of the time, we used the ‘wrong’ way. I like this video alot. It taught me something on parenting the right way.
Most parents have love and patience when it comes to parenting, but Rinpoche has the Skills that most of us do not possess. To be able to reason it out to a kid who has misbehaved and to make him realize he should not only think about himself is not what all parents can do. I certainly learnt from this short clip and it humbles me to think that Rinpoche actually makes time to patiently explain matters to this kid. Thank you Rinpoche for showing the way.
Although Rinpoche is a monk but Rinpoche really know how to take care of children! The short, nice and full of wisdom conversation between Rinpoche and the little boy was so cute, but it is really full of meaningful!
