Searching For the Yeti
The spiritual people of the Himalayan country of Nepal have always had a strong belief in the existence of the Yeti (or the Abominable Snowman). Just like the people of Tibet, those who live in the mountainous regions of Nepal have often reported sightings of the Yeti. It is not something to believe or not believe but a part of life in that part of the world. I myself have met monks and people from Tibet who have seen the Yeti and it was no big deal to them. But they did feel frightened to see them.
This belief is not something new, but can be seen in the country’s history and mythology. It was ingrained in their culture and it still is… so such sightings and reports must have been genuine as the locals would not have gained fame or fortune by telling others that they saw a Yeti.
These days, the Yeti has become of commercial value to Nepal… so much so that hotels, restaurants and even their airlines carry the name ‘YETI’. Nepal is the only country, besides the United States, to have such a big interest in the Yeti, and is famous for it. Every year, thousands of people visit Nepal to climb the Himalayas not only for sport, but also with the hope that they may be the lucky ones to catch a glimpse of this mythical creature.
This video about a young man biking through the Himalayas in search of the Yeti reminded me of what the Lamas told me about my past life – that Yetis used to visit my previous life in meditation caves, and would help me send letters to other meditators. Do watch.

There is an area near Lumbini, Nepal, they have sightings of Yeti for hundreds of years. So they have signages in the area with Yeti artwork to highlight this. Interesting. TR
Curious about the legendary Yeti? Not sure what to believe? Here is an article that explores a range of sources, from folktales to newspaper reports, detailing sightings and encounters with the elusive creature, who has been a part of the very fabric of various Himalayan communities for thousands of years. Read about religious beliefs, myths, fables and stories by scholars and travellers alike, and realise that there is more to the Yeti than you previously thought.

This is a real awesome documentary on bigfoot. One of the best – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cp5eV9nIEjk&feature=youtu.be
In 1967, Bob Gimlin and Roger Patterson stumbled across an incredible sight whilst out in Bluff Creek, in the California wilderness. At a creek which had been freshly washed-out by recent floods, they witnessed a female Bigfoot swiftly traverse the rugged landscape. Since their filmed encounter with the Bigfoot, who has since been nicknamed Patty, many have disputed the authenticity of their recording but no one has been able to successfully prove that it is a fake.

The people of Himalayans readily acknowledge the existence of Yeti even though the world out there is still skeptical and searching for more evidence. This largely has to do with the traditional belief among the Himalayans where they probably experienced during their childhood; darkness of the pine forest, the footprints, the terror when the creature began to howl, and tales of a beast that stalked the upper reaches of the mountains. I certainly hope that oe day Yeti will no longer be a creature on the cryptozoology list but a proven animal.
Although there is no solid evidence pointing to the existence of the yeti, I do believe there is something out there. There are stories of yeti, Sasquatch, big foot, mountain man etc around the globe, that it cannot be the imagination of a few people or group of people that cooked up a hoax.
Especially for those living in the high mountains, where it is relatively unexplored, it is a sort of common knowledge that these creatures exist.
So, if we were to take it a step further, can we say that these creatures are from a different realm or dimension. After, science has not fully explored all there is to know about earth. They are still exploring, and experimenting and documenting.
Just as the oceans are fully mapped, so the high mountains are not fully explored. Until, all surface of the earth has been explored and whether space can fold upon itself and thus creating another dimension has been explored and exhausted, I would like to think that these creatures exist.
This video, I must say, has the added advantage over other videos of the search for yeti or Sasquatch is that the cameraman is very good and has captured the majesty of the Himalayan mountains.
Such a cool advert by Commencal to advertise how cool their bikes are and how cool it is to search the elusive Yeti.
Why do we find the idea that there is something like Yeti living among us so appealing? What were we going to do when we find one or catch one? I fear that we do find them or catch them we would only be adding another being to our long history of animal abuse. For their sake, I hope man will never catch a Yeti.
What we know about the world’s landscape, the places that have been inhabited by man is only a small percentage. There are still many parts of the world that is left unexplored in depth. Yeti is not the only mysterious creatures unknown to man. I guess the difference is that Yeti do venture into our world and cross our path in many witnesses account.
In cultures like Tibet and Nepal, Yeti is not even a mystery. It is common knowledge. I wonder though what realm does the Yeti belongs to in the Buddhist context? Is it just another animal in the animal realm or is there something more spiritual and mystical about its existence hence they continue to elude us.
Nepal is one of the places where Yeti encounters have been reported due to the large numbers of adventurous mountaineers roaming areas where no or little human reside while trekking to Mount Everest.
In 1951, British mountain climber Eric Shipton came across the tracks that would become the most famous Yeti footprints ever found and photographed. The picture was published in The Times Special Supplement (see pic 1). Shipton’s footprints were not the only one discovered by climbers among the Himalayas. Sir Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, on their record ascent to the top of Mount Everest in 1953, also found giant foot prints on the way up.
There is also an interesting piece of what is said to be the scalp of a Yeti, kept as a sacred relic in a locked box in Khumjung Gonpa (monastery) at Khumjung, on the plateau above Namche Bazaar.
Despite numerous expeditions to track down the Yeti, evidence for the “Abominable Snowman” (the name given to the beast by a journalist Henry Newman for the The Statesman in Calcutta in 1921) has not been convincing. Several expeditions have been organized to track down the Yeti, but none have found more than footprints and questionable artifacts. Even genetic tests on alleged Yeti body parts have so far failed to provide evidence to support the existence of Yeti.
However, in a recent study by geneticist Bryan Sykes from Oxford University, Yeti hairs collected from Ladakh and Bhutan were found to contain DNA with remarkable similarities to a prehistoric polar bear that became extinct 40,000 years ago from the Pleistocene period. Hopefully this will lead to a breakthrough.
Dear Rinpoche,
The video was enjoyable to watch, with the mountain biker and techno music, and it captured beautiful scenes of the Himalayas as well as the villages and monasteries. 🙂 I especially loved the shot at the time 5:30. That shot, to me, really captured the magnificence of the mountains. 🙂
Though they did not find the Yeti, at least they saw the beautiful landscapes. So, I think it’s still a win. 😀
Nepal is where most of the high profile yeti encounters have taken place.. thanks mainly to the large numbers of intrepid mountaineers, roaming far beyond regions of human habitation on the approach route to Mount Everest and Himalayas. when was young I used to hear about yeti all the time.. for sure they are still wondering around..
Dear Rinpoche,
This journey seems endless to me and yet he determined to find one as he continues on his journey with his bike. Will he ever catches one?I doubt so but nonetheless, I believe their existence on this planet. Thank you Rinpoche.
Even up until now, no one has really captured one for this. But the good thing is, it’s better to preserve in this way. Hunting them down leads Yeti to fear and anxiety. Hatred will arise due to that because most of the time, hunting is equivalent to killing.
