Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) Goes National!
About 6 months ago, Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) opened a soup kitchen-cum-office off Jalan Imbi. Having a soup kitchen in the heart of KL gave them a permanent place from which to feed the homeless every week.
Currently, 1,200 homeless people regularly come to get hot food, medical assistance, do their laundry, apply for job placements and shelter from Monday-Saturday.
Led by Dato’ Ruby Khong, KSK have also expanded to the outer limits of KL city. They are able to reach the urban poor living in squatter houses via their mobile soup kitchen! Yes they drive there to give food and light medical care.
Now, they have extended even further! Five hours north of Kuala Lumpur is Pulau Penang, or Penang Island. Dato’ Ruby Khong’s older sister, Patsy Gooi, is another of my long-time students, and is currently the manager of Kechara Paradise Penang. She and her volunteeers also distribute food to the homeless of Penang every Monday and Wednesday.
There are currently about 8 regular volunteers serving around 400 packets of food every week in Penang! This is quite a lot of food as the island is not very big. They are now in the process of establishing a proper soup kitchen in Penang, and the renovation should be done within 4 weeks! Then they will have a permanent place in Penang to serve hot food daily. So a Kechara Soup Kitchen with a permanent Place is opening up in Penang very soon.
Do take a look at the photos below… these are of the place before renovation. You can see that it’s in quite a messy state, but in a month’s time it will be a sanctuary for many of Penang’s homeless and urban poor.
It’s wonderful Kechara’s noble works is now reaching out more and more…I love this type of expansion that directly benefits….It is beautiful that somehow doesn’t go to sleep hungry because we cared…..

A metal door frame at the entrance
This grill has not been used for quite a while..
There’s a lot of rubble everywhere
Soon to be filled with debris… out with the old, in with the new!
A very nice and bright open space
Nice big windows for light and air to come through
This place has really neat partitioning. It has a very open concept which is good for soup kitchens… it can accommodate more people
Signboard soon to be replaced with Kechara Soup Kitchen hehe

Kechara Soup Kitchen(KSK), a registered NGO which has 6months ago acquired a permanant place to feed the hungry homeless poor to the tune of 1,200people. It also provide medical assistance, laundry service and job placements and shelter, monday through saturday in the central city of KL. KSK has now spread its wing to Penang, where renovation works have been done to provide a proper soup kitchen to serve hot daily food for Penang’s homeless poor. KSK, led by our tireless kecharian big sister, Dato Ruby Khong through her sister Patsy Gooi, continues to actively provide and expand Kechara’s noble and phillantropic works toreach out nationally to more people outside KL, in line with our Kechara’s goal. It is said,”Generate great compassion and you become a friend to all, a companion to other altruistic Beings, a cherished child of the Enlightened.” COMPASSION CONQUERS ALL, SO SAID THE TITLE OF OUR GURU’S BOOK!
Way to go KSK Penang!!! Can’t wait for the Penang centre to open. THanks for your hardwork and guidance, Patsy! More and more people will benefit from the opening of this new centre.
definitely a thumbs up for KSK. now this is compassion without boundaries, doing such a great deed and feat to benefit more ppl who need our caring, and also a boost of moral support!!
Great Job, Patsy and Dato Ruby. I am so happy for you.

Thats very happy news to hear Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) is starting a KSK base in Penang. And this will be the 2nd KSK in Malaysia. This Department is to take care and feed the homeless. Dato’ Ruby’s elder sister Patsy is following the idea of KSK in Kuala Lumpur when she saw that KL KSK can do very well with only delivering a few packets of food initially and now has even own a building not only providing food but also searching for jobs for the jobless while in the meantime feeding them until they can have a job be on their own. KSK recently has also acquired a 2nd mobile van to enable KSK to go to the outskirts to distribute food. What has started with a few packets of food initially has extended to feeding a few hunred people. When the KSK in Penang start. It will be a 2nd similar KSK in Penang.
